Chapter 5: The Woman Who Came Back

Nia drove three blocks before she had to pull over.

Her hands were shaking so badly that the steering wheel vibrated beneath her palms. She parked outside a closed pharmacy, switched off the engine, and sat in the darkness while the streetlights painted pale yellow stripes across the windshield.

Vanessa.

The name kept repeating in her head.

Marcus had never mentioned a fiancée.

Not once.

He had told her stories about his childhood, his college years, his father's death, and the first apartment he rented after graduation. He had even told her about the woman who broke his heart in high school.

But he had never told her that he had been engaged to someone else.

Nia unlocked her phone and opened the message thread.

Vanessa didn't book that room to catch Marcus with Darius. She booked it because she believed Marcus was going to meet her.

She typed a reply.

Who are you?

This time, the response took nearly a minute.

My name is Tasha. I know you saw me at dinner.

Nia sat up straight.

Tasha.

The young woman who had sat beside Evelyn, twisting her napkin while everybody else pretended not to know anything.

Nia typed again.

Why are you doing this over text?

Because Marcus will talk over me if I say it in front of him. And because I've spent years watching people decide that keeping his secrets is more important than telling you the truth.

Nia looked at the clock on her dashboard.

8:47 p.m.

She called Tasha.

The call rang four times before someone answered.

“Hello?”” Tasha said.

“It's Nia.””

“I know.””

“Then start talking.””

Tasha exhaled shakily.

“Are you somewhere safe?””

Nia almost laughed.

“That's a strange question to ask after you spent an entire dinner watching my marriage fall apart.””

“I know. I'm sorry.””

“Don't apologize. Explain.””

There was a pause.

Then Tasha said, “Vanessa is my older sister.””

Nia closed her eyes.

Of course.

Another family connection. Another person who had known exactly where the bodies were buried.

“You sat at that table knowing your sister had been engaged to my husband.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn't think I deserved to know?””

“I did. I wanted to tell you. But I was scared.””

“Of Marcus?””

“Of what he would do to my family.””

Nia stared through the windshield at a man carrying groceries across the street.

“What does that mean?””

Tasha's voice dropped.

“Marcus helped my mother when she was sick. He paid some of her medical bills. He helped my sister get a job through one of his friends. For years, my family felt like we owed him.””

“So everybody's loyalty came with a price.””

“No. That's not fair.””

“Isn't it?””

Tasha went quiet.

Nia regretted the sharpness of her words almost immediately, but she was too exhausted to soften them.

“Tell me about Vanessa,” she said.

Tasha took a breath.

“My sister and Marcus grew up together. Their families were close. When they got engaged, everyone treated it like a dream come true.””

“Except Marcus.””

“Except Marcus.””

“Did Vanessa know he had feelings for Darius?””

“Yes. She found out before the engagement.””

Nia's grip tightened around the phone.

“Then why did she agree to marry him?””

“Because Marcus told her he was confused. He said he loved her, too. He said he needed time to understand himself.””

Nia stared at the dashboard.

The words sounded painfully familiar.

“What happened?””

“Vanessa believed she could give him a life where he wouldn't have to be afraid. She thought if she loved him enough, he would eventually feel safe enough to be honest.””

Nia let out a slow breath.

“And he couldn't.””

“No.””

“How did the engagement end?””

Tasha hesitated.

“He called her the night before he proposed to you.””

Nia sat perfectly still.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

“I wasn't there for the whole conversation. But I heard Vanessa crying in her bedroom afterward. She said Marcus had told her he couldn't marry her.””

“Because he loved Darius?””

“Because he didn't know who he was willing to disappoint more.””

Nia pressed her forehead against the steering wheel.

The cruelty of it was almost too much to comprehend. Marcus hadn't simply been confused. He had repeatedly asked other people to carry the consequences of his indecision while he waited for life to make the choice for him.

“And the hotel?”” Nia asked.

“Vanessa said Marcus called her fourteen months after your wedding. He told her he wanted to apologize. He said he had finally understood what he had done to her.””

Nia's stomach tightened.

“He met Darius that night.””

“That's what Marcus told everyone. But Vanessa said he asked her to meet him first.””

“First?””

“Yes. She thought he wanted to talk about the engagement. She went to the hotel because she thought he might finally tell her why he had chosen someone else.””

Nia closed her eyes.

“And then?””

Tasha's voice became quieter.

“She waited for almost an hour. Marcus never came.””

Nia opened her eyes.

“Never?””

“Never.””

“Then how did Darius end up there?””

“I don't know. Vanessa said she saw his car outside the hotel when she left. She thought Marcus had been with him the whole time.””

Nia felt the story twisting into something darker.

“Did Vanessa confront Marcus?””

“Yes. The next day.””

“And what did he say?””

“He told her she was imagining things. He said he had never agreed to meet her.””

Nia stared at her phone.

“But he did.””

“I think so.””

“You think so?””

“Vanessa has the messages. Marcus told her he wanted to meet. He gave her the hotel name.””

Nia's breathing grew shallow.

“Where is your sister now?””

Tasha hesitated.

“She moved to Charlotte two years ago.””

“Does she know about tonight?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't she contact me herself?””

“Because she thought you would hate her.””

Nia laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“She's right about one thing. I don't know what I feel about anybody anymore.””

Tasha didn't answer.

Then she said, “There's something else.””

Nia shut her eyes.

“Of course there is.””

“Vanessa didn't just have a hotel reservation. She had a copy of a document Marcus asked her to sign.””

“What document?””

“A statement saying she had ended their engagement because she was seeing somebody else.””

Nia straightened.

“What?””

“He wanted her to sign something saying the breakup was her decision and that she had been unfaithful. He said it would stop people from asking questions about why he suddenly wanted to marry you.””

Nia's mouth went dry.

“Did she sign it?””

“No. She refused.””

“Why would he ask her to do that?””

“Because he wanted to control the story.””

For several seconds, Nia couldn't speak.

Then she whispered, “He wanted to make her the villain.””

“Yes.””

“And if she refused, people would ask why he broke up with her.””

“Yes.””

Nia looked back toward the road.

The world outside seemed ordinary. Cars passed. A distant dog barked. Someone laughed outside a restaurant.

Meanwhile, the life she thought she knew was coming apart in layers.

“Can you send me those messages?”” she asked.

“I can ask Vanessa.””

“Ask her now.””

“I will.””

“And Tasha?””

“Yes?””

“Why did you wait until tonight?””

Tasha's breath trembled.

“Because I heard Marcus tell Grandma that he was going to choose you in front of the family. I thought if he said it publicly, he might finally mean it.””

Nia swallowed.

“And when Darius stood up?””

“I knew it was over.””

Nia looked at the empty passenger seat.

“Thank you for telling me.””

“I don't expect you to forgive me.””

“Good. Because I don't know whether I can.””

They ended the call.

Nia remained parked for another ten minutes, trying to decide where to go. Her best friend lived across town, but she couldn't bear the thought of explaining everything out loud.

Eventually, she drove to a small hotel near the interstate and booked a room under her own name.

At the front desk, the clerk smiled politely.

“Just one night?””

Nia looked at the key card in her hand.

“One night for now.””

In the room, she kicked off her shoes and sat on the edge of the bed. Her phone buzzed.

A message from Tasha.

Vanessa said she'll talk to you tomorrow. She wants you to see something in person.

Then another message arrived from an unknown number.

I'm sorry you found out this way. I never wanted you to be hurt.

Nia recognized the writing style immediately.

Marcus.

She stared at the message for several seconds before typing.

You never wanted me hurt, but you kept choosing actions that hurt me.

His reply came quickly.

I know.

No, you know that I'm angry. You don't know what you took from me.

There was a pause.

Then Marcus sent a photograph.

It showed an old photograph of him and Vanessa standing in front of a church, both dressed formally. Vanessa was smiling. Marcus looked directly at the camera, his arm around her waist.

On the back, someone had written a date.

The date was one week before Marcus met Nia for the first time.

A final message followed.

There's something Vanessa never told Tasha. Something that explains why she kept coming back into my life.

Nia sat up.

What?

Marcus started typing.

Stopped.

Started again.

Then his message appeared.

Vanessa was pregnant when I ended our engagement.

Nia's phone slipped from her hand and landed on the bed.

She stared at the screen, unable to move.

The room seemed to shrink around her.

Marcus had never mentioned a child.

Not a pregnancy. Not a loss. Not even the possibility of becoming a father before he married her.

Nia picked up the phone with trembling fingers.

What happened to the baby?

This time, Marcus didn't answer.

Instead, her phone rang.

Vanessa Reed.

Nia stared at the name, her heart pounding against her ribs.

She accepted the call.

“Hello?””

A woman breathed shakily on the other end.

Then she spoke.

“My name is Vanessa. And before you decide that Marcus is the only person who lied to you, there's something you need to know about me.””

Nia gripped the edge of the mattress.

“What?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“I didn't lose the baby, Nia.””

Nia stopped breathing.

May you like

Vanessa continued in a whisper.

“I had a son.””
