Chapter 8: The Meeting at Meridian
At 7:12 p.m., Ethan received confirmation that the security vendor had preserved the original server image.
At 7:19, his attorney confirmed that the hospital recording had been forwarded to the appropriate investigators.
At 7:31, Richard received a call from his foundation's independent administrator.
The administrator had discovered another discrepancy.
A payment of $185,000 had been issued to a legal trust established five years earlier. The trust's beneficiary was listed as Margaret Ellis, but the transfer instructions had been updated after her death.
The new beneficiary was Daniel Mercer.
Richard read the report twice.
“Every time we find an answer, another person appears,” he said.
Ethan stood beside the office window, reviewing the messages from Olivia and Daniel.
“That's because we've been looking at the transactions one at a time. Someone has been moving money through several accounts and using the restaurant to bring people together.””
“Do you think Daniel is behind it?””
“I think Daniel knows more than he's told us.””
Richard folded the report.
“And Olivia?””
“I don't know.””
Richard looked at him.
“You trusted her.””
“I still want to know why she left with Marcus. That doesn't mean I'm going to ignore the evidence.””
At 7:40, Ethan's attorney called to confirm that an investigator would meet them at a nearby office before they went anywhere. The investigator advised them not to enter the Meridian Building without coordination, especially after receiving a message directing Ethan there alone.
They agreed.
At 7:52, Ethan and Richard arrived at the meeting point.
A woman named Detective Lena Brooks met them in a small conference room. She wore a dark blazer, carried a slim laptop, and spoke with the measured precision of someone who had spent years separating facts from stories.
She reviewed the threatening messages, the compromised security system, and the recovered hospital footage.
Then she asked Ethan a question that caught him off guard.
“Did your mother ever mention the name Margaret Ellis?””
“No.””
“Thomas Hale?””
“No.””
“Did she work for a financial institution or a charitable organization?””
“She worked at a community health center.””
Detective Brooks made a note.
“Did she ever tell you she had been involved in a legal settlement?””
“No.””
The detective closed her notebook.
“Then we need to establish whether her signature on that agreement is authentic. Until we do, we shouldn't treat the document as evidence of her involvement.””
Richard leaned forward.
“What about the trust?””
“That requires a separate financial review. A name on a beneficiary record doesn't establish who controlled the account or who received the money.””
Ethan appreciated her caution.
It was the first time all day someone had looked at the growing pile of documents without immediately trying to turn it into a complete explanation.
The detective studied the location Olivia had sent.
“We won't have you enter the building alone. We'll coordinate with the local team and determine whether the meeting can be monitored safely. If either of you receives another message, don't respond without telling us.””
At 8:03, Daniel Mercer called.
Ethan put the phone on speaker.
“Where are you?”” Daniel asked.
“Somewhere public.””
“You were supposed to come alone.””
“I don't follow instructions from anonymous numbers.””
Daniel exhaled sharply.
“Then you're going to lose the only chance you have to understand what happened to your mother.””
Ethan glanced at Detective Brooks.
“Tell me something only someone involved in this could know.””
A pause.
Then Daniel said, “Your mother didn't sign that settlement agreement.””
Ethan went still.
“How do you know?””
“Because I was the one who prepared the original file.””
Detective Brooks leaned toward the phone.
“Mr. Mercer, this is Detective Brooks. We need you to explain your involvement in the financial transactions and the documents you've mentioned.””
Daniel's voice changed immediately.
“I didn't steal the money.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“I know what you asked. I also know that if I walk into a police station without protection, Marcus Reed will make sure I'm the person who takes the blame.””
“Where are you now?”” the detective asked.
“Near the Meridian Building.””
“Stay where you are. Do not approach anyone carrying documents or electronic devices. Officers will contact you.””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said, “There's a black SUV parked outside the loading entrance. The driver has been following me since yesterday.””
The call ended.
Detective Brooks immediately relayed the information to the local team.
Richard stood.
“I'm going to call my attorney.””
“Do that,” the detective replied.
“But don't contact Marcus.””
Richard sat back down.
At 8:16, the local team confirmed that an SUV was parked near the Meridian Building. Its registration was linked to a vehicle rental company, and the driver had left the vehicle unattended.
Daniel was nowhere to be found.
At 8:22, Olivia sent another message.
*Marcus knows about the meeting. He has the original settlement agreement.*
A second message followed.
*He says he will trade it for immunity.*
Detective Brooks read the messages.
“Did Olivia say where Marcus is?””
“No,” Ethan replied.
“Ask her whether she's safe.””
Ethan typed the question.
The response took nearly a minute.
*I'm safe for now. Marcus thinks I still believe him.*
Then:
*The agreement names the person who received the original trust funds. It's not Vanessa.*
Ethan's heart beat faster.
“Who is it?”” he typed.
No answer came.
At 8:34, Daniel called again.
This time, his voice sounded strained.
“I need to meet you.””
“Where?””
“There's a diner on Peachtree. Twenty-four-hour place. I'll send the address.””
Detective Brooks interrupted.
“Mr. Mercer, we can arrange a safe meeting. Do not move until we confirm the location.””
Daniel ignored her.
“Ethan, listen to me. The original agreement was never meant to stay with Marcus. It was supposed to be delivered to the custodian named in the document.””
“Who was the custodian?””
Daniel took a shaky breath.
“Your mother.””
Ethan felt Richard's hand close around his shoulder.
“Elaine Brooks?”” Ethan asked.
“Yes.””
“But the agreement says she signed it.””
“She didn't. Her name was added later.””
“By whom?””
“Marcus.””
Detective Brooks signaled for Daniel to continue.
Daniel's voice dropped.
“Five years ago, Marcus discovered that someone had been moving money out of the foundation. Margaret Ellis knew about it. She had copies of the original records, and she was trying to get them to the authorities.””
“Why was my mother involved?””
“Because Margaret trusted her.””
Ethan stared at the phone.
“What did my mother have to do with any of this?””
“She helped Margaret establish a secure record of the transactions. She wasn't part of the financial operation. She was supposed to hold a copy of the evidence in case anything happened to Margaret.””
Richard's face tightened.
“And the hospital recording?””
Daniel paused.
“Margaret made it before she died. She knew Vanessa had started working with Marcus. She wanted someone outside the family to know what was happening.””
Ethan swallowed.
“Who killed Margaret?””
“I don't know.””
“Did she die in the highway accident?””
“No.””
The answer came so quickly that Ethan felt his entire body tense.
“Then what happened?””
Daniel's voice faltered.
“She died in the hospital. The accident was a cover story.””
Detective Brooks straightened.
“Mr. Mercer, that is a serious allegation. Do you have evidence?””
“I have a copy of the original medical record and the settlement agreement.””
“Where are they?””
“Marcus has the agreement. I have the medical record.””
“Then we need you to preserve it and meet with investigators.””
Daniel went quiet.
Finally, he said, “I will. But I need Ethan to understand something first.””
Ethan leaned closer.
“Tell me.””
“Vanessa didn't start the transfers. She discovered them.””
Richard let out a disbelieving breath.
Daniel continued.
“Five years ago, Vanessa found out that her father might still be alive. She confronted Marcus because he had handled some of the financial paperwork for her family. He told her that Margaret had stolen money from the foundation and that Thomas had disappeared to avoid prosecution.””
“And she believed him?”” Ethan asked.
“She was young. She was frightened. She had spent her whole life believing her father was dead. Marcus showed her documents that seemed to prove it.””
“Then why did she keep meeting you?””
“Because I had access to the original financial records. She wanted to find out whether Marcus had lied.””
Ethan remembered the lounge footage.
“Your relationship with her was real.””
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
“Yes.””
Richard looked away.
Daniel continued, his voice rough.
“But the first time she met me, it was to ask about the transfers. We got close over time. I know what it looked like on that footage. I'm not going to pretend it wasn't an affair.””
“Did she use Richard's company card to pay you?””
“No. Not directly. The charges were processed through a merchant account Marcus controlled. He used the restaurant reservations to make the transfers look like legitimate hospitality expenses.””
Richard clenched his jaw.
“Why would Vanessa allow that?””
“Because Marcus told her the money was being returned to the foundation. He said he needed her cooperation to expose the people who had stolen it.””
“Did you believe him?”” Ethan asked.
“I believed him at first.””
“And now?””
“Now I know he was using all of us.””
A car horn sounded in the background.
Daniel's breathing quickened.
“Someone's here.””
Detective Brooks immediately instructed him to move to a public area and stay on the line.
Then the call dropped.
For several seconds, the room remained silent.
Richard turned toward the detective.
“Can you locate him?””
“We're trying.””
Ethan looked at the messages from Olivia.
Marcus had the original agreement.
Daniel had the medical record.
Vanessa had discovered the transfers.
And Elaine Brooks had apparently been entrusted with evidence she had never told her son about.
The story was beginning to take shape, but its most important pieces remained missing.
At 8:49, Detective Brooks received an update.
Daniel had been located two blocks from the diner. He was unharmed, and officers were escorting him to a secure interview location.
Ethan exhaled slowly.
Then his phone rang.
Vanessa.
He hesitated before answering.
“What do you want?””
Her voice sounded exhausted.
“I need to tell you the truth.””
“You've had several opportunities.””
“I know.””
“Then tell it to the investigators.””
“I will. But there's something you need to hear first.””
Ethan looked at Detective Brooks, who nodded for him to continue.
“Go ahead.””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“Your mother didn't just hold the records for Margaret. She helped her hide the original account.””
Ethan felt Richard stiffen beside him.
“Why?””
“Because Margaret discovered that someone was using her identity to move money through the foundation. She was afraid that if she went to the authorities, the person responsible would destroy the evidence and frame her.””
“Who was responsible?””
Vanessa went silent.
Then she whispered, “My father.””
Richard's face changed.
“Thomas Hale?””
“Yes.””
Ethan leaned toward the phone.
“But Daniel said Marcus was responsible.””
“Marcus handled the transactions. My father arranged them. He used the foundation to hide money from people who trusted him, and when Margaret found out, he made her disappear.””
“Did you see him after the accident?””
“No.””
“Did you know he was alive?””
“I suspected it. Then Marcus showed me documents proving that he had died. I believed him until I found a letter in Margaret's belongings.””
“What did the letter say?””
“That my father was alive and that he had used a new identity.””
Ethan looked at Richard.
“Why didn't you tell him?””
“Because I thought he was protecting my father.””
Richard's face tightened.
“I was protecting you.””
Vanessa heard him.
“Richard?””
He took the phone from Ethan.
“You told me your father was dead.””
“I thought he was.””
“You knew about the account.””
“I knew there was an account. I didn't know about the transfers until Daniel showed me the records.””
“You used my company card.””
“Marcus told me it was the only way to access the account without alerting my father.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“And the kiss?””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“That was real. I won't lie about that.””
Richard's jaw clenched.
“I appreciate the honesty. It's four months too late.””
“I know.””
For a moment, all three of them were silent.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
“Ethan, there's something else. The original settlement agreement doesn't just name the custodian. It names the person who received the money after Margaret died.””
“Who?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Marcus Reed.””
Richard looked down at the floor.
Ethan felt a cold certainty settle over him.
The forged authorization.
The remote security access.
The altered reservations.
The threats.
Everything pointed toward Marcus.
But Vanessa had also admitted to an affair, and Daniel had admitted to participating in it. Neither confession proved the full extent of their involvement in the financial scheme.
Ethan asked the question that mattered most.
“Where is your father now?””
Vanessa began to cry.
“I don't know.””
“Do you have any way to contact him?””
“No.””
“Then how did you know he was alive?””
She paused.
Then she whispered, “Because he called me this morning.””
Ethan's grip tightened around the phone.
“What did he say?””
“He told me that if I wanted to protect Richard, I needed to make sure you showed him the footage.””
Ethan stared at the detective.
The recording.
The restaurant.
The deliberate humiliation of Richard.
Someone had wanted the affair exposed.
Someone had wanted Ethan to show the video.
And Thomas Hale had apparently known about the plan before it happened.
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“He said it was the only way to bring you into the investigation.””
Ethan felt his stomach turn.
“Why me?””
“Because your mother left something behind.””
“What?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“The original account isn't just a bank account. It's a trust. And the person named as its final beneficiary is you.””
The line went silent.
Ethan stared at the phone.
Richard looked at him in disbelief.
Then Detective Brooks leaned forward and spoke firmly into the receiver.
“Vanessa, this is Detective Brooks. I need you to tell me where you are.””
Vanessa gave an address.
The detective relayed it to the local team and instructed Vanessa not to leave.
Then Vanessa added one final sentence.
“There's one thing you should know about Thomas.””
Ethan brought the phone closer.
“What?””
“He wasn't the man who disappeared in the accident.””
A pause.
May you like
“The man in that car was his brother.””
And suddenly, the five-year-old secret had become something far more dangerous than a hidden bank account.
