Chapter 1: The Woman Who Answered the Door
“Does Jordan live here?””
Tiana asked the question with a steady voice, but her fingers were trembling against the side of her burgundy dress.
The woman standing in the doorway was beautiful. Platinum curls framed her face, gold hoops caught the sunlight, and a blue silk shirt hung loosely over her jeans. She looked about twenty-five, relaxed and completely at home.
Then she smiled.
“That's me.””
For one strange second, Tiana forgot how to breathe.
Behind her, Keisha shifted her weight on the front porch. Her dark red outfit stood out against the pale siding of the house, and her natural curls moved slightly in the warm afternoon breeze.
“Tiana?”” Keisha murmured.
“You good?””
Tiana stared at the woman in the doorway.
This was the address Dray had given her three weeks earlier when he'd claimed he was helping a friend move. It was also the address attached to the photograph she'd found buried in his messages the night before.
A photograph of a woman with platinum curls.
A woman named Jordan.
And beneath the picture, three words that had kept Tiana awake until sunrise.
Can't wait, babe.
Tiana swallowed.
“You're Jordan?””
Jordan's smile faded a little.
“Yeah. Why?””
There was no recognition in her eyes. No embarrassment. No sign that she knew Tiana existed.
Tiana had imagined this moment dozens of times during the sleepless night. She'd pictured shouting, crying, demanding explanations. She'd rehearsed every accusation until the words felt sharp enough to cut through any lie Dray might offer.
But standing there, face-to-face with the woman who might be sharing her boyfriend, Tiana couldn't find a single one.
She could only hear the sound of her own heartbeat.
Keisha touched her elbow.
“Take your time,” she whispered.
“I'm right here.””
Jordan glanced between them.
“Okay,” she said cautiously.
“Did somebody send you?””
“No,” Tiana answered.
“I came because I need to ask you something.””
“About what?””
Before Tiana could respond, footsteps sounded inside the house.
Heavy, familiar footsteps.
Then came a man's voice, casual and affectionate.
“Babe, who's that?””
Tiana went completely still.
She knew that voice.
She knew the slight rasp at the end of his words, the lazy rhythm of his speech, the way he stretched the word babe when he wanted something.
She had heard it through her phone every night for eleven months.
She had heard it whispering promises against her ear.
And she'd heard it tell her, only four days earlier, that she was the only woman he'd ever wanted to build a future with.
A man stepped into the doorway behind Jordan.
Black T-shirt. Short fade. Silver watch.
Dray.
His smile was still on his face when he looked toward the porch.
Then he saw Tiana.
The smile disappeared so quickly that Jordan turned to study him.
“Dray?”” Tiana whispered.
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
For the first time since she'd met him, Tiana watched her boyfriend look genuinely afraid.
“What are you doing here?”” he finally demanded.
The question hit harder than any insult could have.
Not Why are you here?
Not What's wrong?
Not even Let me explain.
What are you doing here?
As if she'd broken into his life. As if she'd arrived uninvited at a place where she had no right to exist.
Tiana felt something inside her settle into place.
The uncertainty she'd carried all morning began to dissolve, replaced by a cold, unmistakable clarity.
Jordan looked from Dray to Tiana.
“Wait,” she said slowly.
“You two know each other?””
Dray stepped forward.
“Tiana, listen—”
“No.”” Tiana raised one hand.
“Don't start.””
“Tiana, please. This isn't what you think.””
Keisha let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
“Then explain it,” she said.
“Because from where I'm standing, this looks pretty straightforward.””
Jordan's expression changed.
She looked at Dray's hand hovering near her shoulder, then at Tiana's face. Her fingers tightened around the edge of the door.
“Who is she, Dray?””
He glanced at Jordan.
Then at Tiana.
Then back at Jordan.
Three seconds passed.
Three seconds in which two women waited for one man to tell the truth.
He couldn't do it.
Tiana lifted her chin.
“I'm his girlfriend.””
The words landed in the doorway like a dropped glass.
Jordan stepped away from Dray so abruptly that her shoulder struck the doorframe.
“What?””
Tiana's voice shook, but she didn't look away.
“I'm his girlfriend. We've been together for eleven months.””
Jordan stared at Dray.
He shook his head quickly.
“Jordan, baby, let me explain.””
“You told me you were single!””
Her voice cracked on the final word.
Dray reached for her hand.
She pulled it away.
“Don't touch me.””
For the first time, Tiana looked at Jordan as something other than a possible rival. She saw the shock in her eyes, the confusion, the same terrible question Tiana had been asking herself since midnight.
How could he do this?
Keisha moved beside Tiana, shoulder to shoulder.
“So you lied to both of them?”” she asked.
Dray's lips parted.
No answer came.
The porch fell silent except for the distant hum of a lawn mower and the faint rustle of leaves along the street.
Tiana and Jordan looked at each other.
Two strangers.
Two different lives.
One man standing between them, caught in the truth he'd spent months hiding.
Then Jordan slowly turned toward the hallway.
“Dray,” she said, her voice suddenly quiet, “how long have you been lying to me?””
He didn't answer.
Instead, he looked past her shoulder toward a closed bedroom door.
And Tiana noticed something that made her stomach twist.
A second pair of women's shoes sat neatly beside it.
May you like
Not Jordan's.
And definitely not hers.
