Chapter 5: The Daughter No One Mentioned

Evelyn did not speak for several seconds.

The name on the document seemed to blur beneath her eyes.

Rebecca Lawson.

Her attorney. Her confidante. The woman who had sat beside her during the worst hours of Daniel's funeral and helped her navigate the legal wreckage left behind.

His daughter?

“That is impossible,” Evelyn whispered.

Thomas folded his hands.

“Daniel told me he had a daughter from a relationship before he met you. He said the child had been adopted by her mother's husband and that he had no intention of disrupting her life.””

“Daniel never told me he had another child.””

“I know.””

“Did Rebecca know?””

Thomas hesitated.

“I believe she discovered the connection years ago. I cannot say exactly when.””

Evelyn stood so abruptly that the chair scraped across the floor.

“You are telling me that my husband kept a daughter secret from me, and my attorney has been helping me investigate a scheme involving the family trust while concealing that same connection?””

“I am telling you that the document requires an explanation.””

“Then why did Daniel cross out her name?””

Thomas looked down at the photocopy.

“Because he changed the beneficiary designation shortly before his death.””

“To Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“And what was Rebecca's original share?””

“An equal portion of the residual estate, subject to the trust's terms.””

Evelyn felt the room close around her.

For fifteen years, she had believed she knew the full story of Daniel's life. She had loved him through his failures, his illness, and the terrible final months when even breathing became an effort.

She had held his hand when he died.

She had promised to protect their son.

And apparently, he had left her with a secret that could turn everything she believed about her marriage upside down.

“Why did he remove Rebecca?”” she asked.

Thomas's expression tightened.

“That is the question I have spent years trying to answer.””

Evelyn stared at him.

“You knew all this time?””

“I knew Daniel had made a change. I did not know why. He instructed me to preserve the original records and not disclose the beneficiary's identity unless a specific review was triggered.””

“What review?””

“The one we are conducting now.””

Evelyn sat down slowly.

“So Rebecca may have a financial interest in the trust.””

“Yes.””

“And she has been advising me on the very matter that could determine whether she receives anything.””

“Yes.””

“Did you know she was my attorney?””

“I did not know she had represented you until you told me her name.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The room seemed too bright.

For years, she had trusted Rebecca with the details of her finances, her marriage, her fears about Marcus, and the private documents Daniel had left behind.

If Rebecca had been hiding her identity, what else had she concealed?

Thomas moved the document toward her.

“We should verify the records before drawing conclusions. A beneficiary designation does not establish that Rebecca had anything to do with the attempted transfer.””

“But it gives her a reason to care about what happens to the trust.””

“Potentially.””

Evelyn rose.

“I need to speak to her.””

“Not before we understand what she knows.””

“She has been in my house. She has seen the documents.””

“Then she may already know we found the letter.””

Evelyn looked at the page again.

Do not assume the person who benefits from a betrayal is the person who planned it.

Daniel had chosen those words deliberately.

Perhaps he had known that Rebecca's name would appear suspicious.

Perhaps he had been warning Evelyn about someone else.

Or perhaps he had been warning her about his own daughter.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Rebecca appeared.

*Rebecca: I reviewed the trust provisions again. We need to meet as soon as possible. There's something important I haven't told you.*

Evelyn showed Thomas the screen.

He read it without speaking.

“Did you tell her about the beneficiary designation?”” he asked.

“No.””

“Then how does she know there's something to disclose?””

Evelyn stared at the message.

A second text appeared.

*Rebecca: Please don't speak to Marcus or Vanessa until we've talked. They may try to convince you that I'm responsible for this.*

Thomas's face hardened.

“Call her.””

Evelyn pressed the number.

Rebecca answered almost immediately.

“Evelyn?””

“What haven't you told me?””

Silence.

Then Rebecca exhaled.

“I know about Daniel's other daughter.””

Evelyn gripped the phone.

“You know about her?””

“I know who she is.””

“Who?””

Rebecca's voice became barely audible.

“Me.””

The word seemed to strike the room like a dropped glass.

Evelyn could not breathe.

“Are you telling me that you are Daniel's daughter?””

“Yes.””

“And you have known this all along?””

“I found out when I was twenty-six.””

“That's nearly ten years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Rebecca began to cry.

“Because I was afraid you would think I had come into your life to get money.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because I wanted to know you before you knew who I was.””

Evelyn pressed her free hand against the desk.

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

“Did Daniel know you were working with me?””

“Yes.””

The answer came too quickly.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“He knew?””

“He recognized me the first time we met. He asked me to keep the relationship private.””

“Why?””

Rebecca was silent.

“Rebecca, answer me.””

“Because he believed you were already carrying too much. He said telling you would damage your marriage, and then, after he became ill, he said there was no longer a good time.””

Evelyn's voice broke.

“So he left me to discover the truth from a piece of paper fifteen years later?””

“I am sorry.””

“Did he ever tell you why he removed your name from the beneficiary designation?””

“No.””

“Did you know he had done that?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“I suspected it.””

Evelyn felt something inside her turn cold.

“Suspected?””

“I saw an earlier version of the trust when I was helping with a legal matter. My name was listed. Years later, I discovered it had changed.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I didn't want to look as though I was challenging his decision.””

“Yet you continued working with me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I cared about you.””

Evelyn almost laughed, but the sound caught in her throat.

“You cared about me enough to let me sit across from you for years, telling you things I would never have told another person, while you knew my husband had hidden a daughter from me.””

“I know how terrible that sounds.””

“It sounds like a betrayal.””

Rebecca cried quietly.

“I never asked Daniel for money. I never wanted to take anything from you or Marcus.””

“Then tell me why your name appeared in the original beneficiary designation.””

“I don't know.””

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

He shook his head slightly, warning her not to let emotion replace evidence.

She drew a slow breath.

“Rebecca, I need you to step away from my legal matters until this is resolved.””

“Evelyn, please—”

“That is not a punishment. It is a necessary boundary.””

“I understand.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

Evelyn ended the call.

For a long moment, neither she nor Thomas spoke.

Finally, Thomas said, “Daniel's letter warned you not to assume that the person who benefits from a betrayal is the person who planned it.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You think Rebecca is innocent?””

“I think we do not know enough to accuse her.””

“And Vanessa?””

“Same answer.””

Evelyn walked to the window.

Below, traffic moved through the wet streets. People hurried beneath umbrellas, carrying coffee cups and briefcases, unaware that a family trust was unraveling in a quiet office above them.

“What about the missing beneficiary?”” she asked.

“Why would Daniel remove his daughter if he wanted to protect her?””

Thomas opened the folder again.

“There is another document. I have never been able to verify whether it was executed.””

He removed a photocopy of a handwritten statement.

It was signed by Daniel, dated two weeks before his death.

If my wife is ever threatened through the trust, the independent administrator must locate the original beneficiary record and disclose the identity of the person whose interests were transferred.

Evelyn frowned.

“Whose interests were transferred?””

Thomas pointed to the final line.

It contained a name.

Not Rebecca Lawson.

Not Marcus Carter.

*Daniel Whitmore.*

Evelyn looked up sharply.

“Vanessa's father?””

“Daniel believed Whitmore had once been a beneficiary of an arrangement connected to the company. The interest was later removed.””

“Why would my husband give him any interest in our business?””

“He may not have intended to. The record is incomplete.””

Evelyn looked back at the document.

A possibility began to form, one so disturbing that she almost refused to entertain it.

“What if Daniel Whitmore has been trying to recover something he believes belongs to him?””

“Then this may be more than a scheme to gain access to the trust.””

“What could it be?””

Thomas closed the folder.

“A dispute over the ownership of Carter Development that began before Marcus was old enough to understand it.””

Evelyn's phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a voicemail from Marcus.

She played it.

“Mom, call me. Vanessa's father says the bank has frozen everything, and now they're saying the development could collapse. Vanessa is furious. She says you knew this would happen.””

A pause followed. Evelyn heard him inhale.

“Please, Mom. I need you to tell me what Dad did.””

The message ended.

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

For fifteen years, she had protected Marcus from the truth because she thought it would hurt him.

Now the truth was reaching him through people who might use it to control him.

She called him back.

He answered immediately.

“Mom, thank God.””

“Marcus, listen to me carefully. I don't know everything yet, but I will not lie to you.””

“Vanessa says you froze the trust because you're angry about the wedding.””

“I froze nothing. The administrator suspended the pending transfer because the paperwork raised serious concerns.””

“Her father says the company is his by right.””

Evelyn went still.

“What did you just say?””

“He says Dad took something from him years ago. He says this whole trust was built on a lie.””

Thomas slowly lifted his head.

Evelyn looked at the handwritten document.

“Marcus, where are you?””

“At Vanessa's parents' house.””

“Leave immediately.””

“Why?””

“Because I don't know what Daniel Whitmore intends to do, and I won't risk you being caught in the middle.””

Marcus's voice hardened.

“You still think everyone is trying to use me.””

“I think you are standing in a room full of people who have information I do not have.””

“Vanessa is my wife.””

“And I am your mother.””

Silence.

Then Marcus said, “Her father wants to speak with you.””

Evelyn's stomach tightened.

“Put him on.””

A man's voice came onto the line, smooth and confident.

“Evelyn. It's been a long time.””

She recognized the voice from the wedding reception, where Daniel Whitmore had congratulated her on raising such a fine son.

“Daniel,” she said.

“What do you want?””

“To correct a historical injustice.””

“What injustice?””

“Your husband took something from my family. Something he had no right to keep.””

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

He was already reaching for his notes.

Daniel Whitmore continued.

“Your son has finally agreed to help me recover it. Unfortunately, you've chosen to interfere.””

“Then tell me what you believe belongs to you.””

A low chuckle came through the phone.

“Ask Thomas Reed about the original partnership. Ask him why Daniel Carter changed the ownership records the week before he died.””

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

“Are you threatening my son?””

“No, Evelyn. I'm offering him the opportunity to become the man his father never allowed him to be.””

The call ended.

Evelyn slowly lowered the phone.

Thomas stood.

“We need to find the original partnership agreement.””

“Where is it?””

Thomas looked toward the binder.

“If Daniel preserved it, it should be in the company's archive.””

“Then we go there.””

Thomas hesitated.

“Evelyn, there's something else you should know.””

She turned.

“The original partnership agreement may explain why Daniel changed the trust. But it may also reveal that Marcus has been promised something that does not legally belong to him.””

“What?””

Thomas met her eyes.

“The right to control the company was never supposed to pass directly to Marcus.””

Evelyn felt the floor shift beneath her.

“Then who was supposed to control it?””

Thomas opened his mouth to answer.

Before he could speak, his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“It's the archive manager.””

He answered.

“Thomas Reed.””

A man's panicked voice came through the speaker.

“Mr. Reed, someone broke into the Carter Development records room last night.””

Thomas gripped the phone.

“What was taken?””

The manager hesitated.

“Almost nothing. The files are still here.””

“Then what is missing?””

May you like

A long silence followed.

“The original partnership agreement, sir. And the page with the final signatures.””
