Chapter 7: The Eighteen-Thousand-Dollar Secret

“Eighteen thousand dollars?””

Marcus repeated the amount as though saying it again might somehow make it less real.

His phone remained in his hand.

The transaction details were displayed clearly.

*Williams Family Trust.*

*Beneficiary: Isaiah Williams.*

*Withdrawal: $18,000.*

*Authorized transaction: Three weeks earlier.*

Marcus looked at Tasha.

“Explain.””

Tasha stood beside the sofa, her arms wrapped around herself.

“I can explain.””

“Then do it.””

“Marcus, please don't make a scene in front of the children.””

Robert stepped forward.

“You should have thought about the children before taking their money.””

Tasha turned toward him.

“It's not like I stole it!””

Marcus stared at her.

“Then why is there an eighteen-thousand-dollar withdrawal from an account that belongs to my son?””

“I was going to put it back.””

“When?””

“When things settled down!””

Marcus let out a bitter laugh.

“You used money that my mother and father saved for Isaiah, and your explanation is that you intended to replace it?””

Tasha wiped her eyes.

“I needed it.””

“For what?””

She looked toward the stairs.

Robert noticed.

“Where is the money?””

Tasha didn't answer.

Marcus walked toward the dining table and placed his phone beside the documents.

“I want the truth. Right now.””

Tasha took a deep breath.

“Darren was in trouble.””

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

“Of course.””

“He was about to lose his house.””

“And?””

“His business had collapsed. He had debts. Ethan needed somewhere stable to live.””

Robert frowned.

“What does that have to do with Isaiah's trust?””

Tasha looked at him.

“I helped Darren pay off some of his debts.””

“How much?””

“Some.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“How much, Tasha?””

She lowered her head.

“Eighteen thousand.””

Robert grabbed the edge of the table.

“You gave him all of Isaiah's money?””

“I didn't give him all of it! Some of it went toward other expenses.””

“What other expenses?””

Tasha started crying harder.

Marcus's voice remained controlled.

“Did you transfer it to Darren?””

“Yes.””

“Without asking me?””

“Yes.””

“Without asking Robert?””

“Yes.””

“Without telling anyone?””

She nodded.

Marcus looked toward his son.

Isaiah was sitting quietly on the bottom step of the staircase.

His old backpack was beside him.

The little boy had heard everything.

Marcus walked over and crouched.

“Buddy, why don't you go upstairs with Jordan and Ava for a few minutes?””

Isaiah shook his head.

“I want to stay with you.””

“Are you scared?””

The boy hesitated.

“A little.””

Marcus gently took his hands.

“Nothing that happened today is your fault. Not one thing. Do you understand?””

Isaiah nodded.

“Okay.””

Marcus kissed his forehead.

Then he stood and turned back toward Tasha.

“Show me the transfer.””

Tasha hesitated.

“I don't have to show you everything.””

Marcus looked at her.

“That's my son's money.””

She slowly picked up her phone.

Her fingers moved across the screen.

After several seconds, she placed it on the table.

There were multiple transfers.

The first was $7,000.

The second was $4,500.

The third was $3,000.

The remaining amount had been divided into smaller transactions.

Every transfer went to an account belonging to Darren Cole.

Robert stared at the screen.

“You didn't just help him once. You kept sending him money.””

Tasha shook her head.

“He promised to pay it back.””

Marcus looked at the dates.

“Some of these transfers happened months ago.””

“He was trying to get back on his feet.””

“And Isaiah was carrying a broken backpack while you were paying Darren's bills?””

Tasha covered her mouth.

“I didn't think—”

“No,” Marcus interrupted.

“You didn't think about Isaiah.””

A door creaked upstairs.

Jordan appeared at the top of the staircase.

“Mommy?””

Tasha looked up.

“What?””

“Are we still going to school tomorrow?””

Tasha wiped her face.

“Of course, sweetheart.””

Jordan looked toward Isaiah.

“Is Isaiah getting a backpack too?””

Marcus turned.

“Yes. He's getting everything he needs.””

Jordan nodded.

Then she asked something that made Tasha look away.

“Why didn't he get one before?””

Nobody answered.

Jordan slowly returned upstairs.

Robert picked up his phone.

“Marcus, we need to contact the bank.””

Tasha immediately stepped forward.

“No!””

Robert looked at her.

“Why not?””

“Because if you report this, Darren could lose everything!””

Marcus stared at her.

“And what about Isaiah?””

Tasha began shaking her head.

“You don't understand. Darren has a family.””

“So do I!””

His voice finally broke.

“I have a son who thought he was too expensive to deserve a notebook!””

Isaiah looked up.

Marcus immediately lowered his voice.

“I'm sorry, buddy.””

The boy nodded.

Robert placed a hand on Marcus's shoulder.

“Son, let's handle this properly.””

Marcus agreed.

He contacted the bank and requested that the trust account be protected while the disputed withdrawals were investigated.

Then he called the attorney who had helped establish the account years earlier.

The attorney promised to review the documents.

Tasha sat motionless.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that the situation had moved beyond an uncomfortable family argument.

This was no longer about a shopping receipt.

It was about money entrusted to her for a child who couldn't defend himself.

Marcus ended the call.

“I'm going to get Isaiah's school things tomorrow.””

Tasha nodded weakly.

“I can come with you.””

“No.””

She looked up.

“Marcus—”

“I'll take him myself.””

Robert glanced at the clock.

“Let's get something to eat. Isaiah hasn't had lunch.””

Marcus nodded.

He walked toward the kitchen with his son.

But before they reached the doorway, Tasha spoke.

“Marcus, wait.””

He stopped.

She stood and approached him slowly.

“There's something else.””

Robert turned.

“What now?””

Tasha looked directly at Marcus.

“The eighteen thousand dollars wasn't the only money I took from that account.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

She swallowed.

“I didn't transfer all of it to Darren.””

“Then where did the rest go?””

Tasha looked toward the dining table.

“There's another account.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Whose account?””

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Mine.””

Robert's eyes widened.

Marcus slowly turned back toward the table.

“How much?””

Tasha began crying again.

“Thirty-two thousand dollars.””

The room fell silent.

Robert sat down heavily.

Marcus looked at his wife as though he no longer recognized her.

“Are you telling me that thirty-two thousand dollars belonging to Isaiah is sitting in your personal account?””

Tasha nodded.

“And there's one more thing,” she said.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“What?””

She looked toward the staircase.

“I didn't move that money for myself.””

Robert stared at her.

“Then who was it for?””

May you like

Tasha's answer changed everything.

“Jordan and Ava.””
