Chapter 6: The Truth Behind Her Silence

Michael led them back into the small office.

This time, Lauren didn't complain about the walk. She followed him with her hands clasped tightly in front of her, while Brandon moved in silence beside her.

The office door closed.

Michael set his tablet on the table and gestured toward the chairs.

“Please sit down. I want to make sure I explain this accurately.””

Brandon sat.

Lauren remained standing for a moment, then lowered herself into the chair beside him.

“Just tell us what this is about,” she said.

Michael nodded.

“The preliminary review confirms that Ms. Denise has an authorization role connected to the event arrangements. Her instruction has been recorded, and the hotel is reviewing what actions are permitted under the applicable terms.””

Lauren's expression tightened.

“You've already told us that.””

“Yes. What I need you to understand is that her role cannot be treated as informal simply because you weren't aware of its full scope.””

Brandon stared at the table.

“What does that mean for us?””

“It means we need to determine what decisions can be made without her authorization and whether any changes are necessary. We won't make assumptions or ask either of you to accept responsibilities you haven't agreed to.””

Lauren leaned forward.

“Can the party continue?””

“I can't give you a definitive answer until the review is complete.””

“How long will that take?””

“I don't have a confirmed timeline.””

Lauren sat back and pressed her lips together.

For the first time that evening, she seemed unable to find a sentence that would make the situation bend to her expectations.

Brandon looked at Michael.

“Did my mother ask for this to happen?””

Michael answered without hesitation.

“She asked us to follow the applicable terms and handle the matter discreetly. She did not ask us to embarrass you.””

Brandon nodded slowly.

“Thank you for being honest.””

Michael paused.

“I should also make one thing clear. Your mother's instruction does not mean the hotel will automatically take any particular action. We have obligations to all parties involved. We'll follow the terms and communicate with the appropriate people.””

“I understand,” Brandon said.

Lauren looked at him sharply.

“Do you? Because I don't think you understand what this is doing to us.””

He turned toward her.

“I'm trying to understand what it did to her.””

She looked away.

Michael gave them a moment before continuing.

“I recommend that you avoid making promises to guests about changes to the event until we have confirmation. Our staff will continue providing the services currently authorized while the review proceeds, subject to the terms and any necessary decisions.””

Lauren's eyes widened.

“So everyone is going to sit out there wondering whether the party is falling apart?””

“We'll manage the situation professionally.””

“And what are we supposed to tell them?””

“You can tell them that the event team is reviewing an administrative matter. You don't need to disclose private information.””

Brandon almost laughed at the irony.

His mother had been publicly told she did not belong at the family table, yet she was the only person who had asked that the matter remain private.

He stood.

“Thank you, Michael.””

The director rose as well.

“Of course.””

Brandon turned to Lauren.

“I'm going back to the ballroom.””

She followed him into the corridor.

“Brandon, wait.””

He stopped.

She stepped closer, lowering her voice.

“You can't seriously believe this is all my fault.””

He studied her face.

“I believe I failed my mother. That's my fault.””

“And what about me?””

“I don't know what to say to you right now.””

Her eyes glistened, though he couldn't tell whether she was hurt, angry, or frightened.

“I'm your fiancée.””

“I know.””

“I'm supposed to be the person you choose.””

Brandon looked at her.

“Choosing you shouldn't have required me to disrespect her.””

Lauren's face changed.

For a moment, she seemed ready to argue. Then she looked down at her hands.

“My mother always told me that marriage means putting your spouse first.””

Brandon nodded.

“Mine taught me that loving someone doesn't mean treating everybody else as disposable.””

Lauren looked up.

“You make everything sound so simple.””

“No. I think I've spent years making things complicated because I didn't want to have difficult conversations.””

He started walking again.

She didn't follow immediately.

When he reached the ballroom, he found several relatives gathered near the entrance. His cousin Marcus approached him first.

“Man, what's going on?””

Brandon glanced at the guests behind him.

“There's an administrative issue with the event. We're working through it.””

Marcus studied his face.

“That's not what I asked.””

Brandon exhaled.

He could have blamed the hotel. He could have said there had been a misunderstanding. He could have pretended the entire evening had gone wrong for reasons nobody could control.

Instead, he said, “I let Lauren disrespect my mother, and I didn't stop it.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“What?””

“I should have defended her. I didn't.””

Marcus shook his head slowly.

“Uncle James would have had something to say about that.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn't you?””

Brandon looked at the floor.

“Because I was afraid of upsetting Lauren.””

Marcus stared at him.

“So you upset your mother instead?””

Brandon had no defense.

Marcus glanced toward the exit.

“Is Aunt Denise okay?””

“I think so. She said she needs time.””

“Then give her time.””

Brandon nodded.

Marcus placed a hand on his shoulder.

“You can love somebody and still be wrong. But you have to stop making the people who love you pay for your mistakes.””

Then he walked away.

Brandon stood alone for a moment.

The ballroom looked exactly as it had earlier: the chandeliers glowed, the flowers remained perfectly arranged, and the guests wore their formal clothes.

Yet everything felt different.

A young server approached with a glass of water.

“Would you like this, sir?””

Brandon accepted it.

“Thank you.””

The server nodded and moved away.

Brandon looked at the glass in his hand and remembered his mother telling him to drink water before he spoke at school assemblies because he always talked too quickly when he was nervous.

He had not thought about that in years.

His mother remembered everything.

His favorite meal. The names of his childhood friends. The way he liked his coffee. The date of every important interview.

He had assumed those memories were simply part of being loved.

He had forgotten that love required effort, too.

Across the room, Lauren was speaking to her parents. Her mother listened with a tight expression, occasionally glancing toward Brandon. Her father stood with his hands in his pockets, his face unreadable.

Lauren caught Brandon looking and motioned for him to come over.

He walked toward them.

“Brandon,” Lauren's father said, extending his hand.

“We seem to have a difficult situation.””

Brandon shook it.

“Yes, sir.””

“Do you know what's happening?””

“Not all of it. The hotel is reviewing the arrangements.””

Lauren's mother frowned.

“Why would your mother withdraw authorization during the engagement party?””

Brandon met her eyes.

“Because she was treated badly.””

The older woman blinked.

Lauren's father looked at his daughter.

“Is that true?””

Lauren stiffened.

“Dad, it's not that simple.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked around at the guests.

“Not here.””

Her father held her gaze.

“Perhaps you should have thought of that before making a private matter public.””

Lauren's face flushed.

Brandon felt no satisfaction at hearing someone else criticize her. He only wished someone had spoken up for Denise when it mattered.

Lauren's mother drew her daughter aside.

Her father turned to Brandon.

“Whatever happens with the event, you need to understand that tonight is about more than a room full of guests.””

Brandon nodded.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

The question sounded painfully familiar.

Brandon thought of his father.

“Yes, sir. I'm beginning to.””

His future father-in-law studied him for a moment, then gave a small nod.

“Good. Because you can't build a marriage on appearances alone.””

He walked away.

Brandon remained where he was.

A few minutes later, Simone approached the stage and quietly informed the guests that there would be a short delay before the next scheduled portion of the evening. She offered no explanation beyond a brief reference to event arrangements.

Nobody applauded.

Nobody protested.

The guests simply waited.

Brandon looked toward the empty space beside the stage where Denise had stood earlier.

He imagined what would have happened if he had defended her.

He could have taken her hand. He could have told Lauren that his mother belonged at the family table. He could have apologized to Denise in front of the guests and asked whether she wanted to stay.

The evening might have continued.

The party might have become a little uncomfortable, then settled back into celebration.

Instead, he had chosen a few minutes of convenience over the woman who had spent thirty-four years choosing him.

He took out his phone and opened his messages.

Denise's name appeared at the top of the screen.

His apology sat beneath the earlier unanswered calls.

He typed another message.

You don't owe me anything, Mom. I should have stood up for you. I'll give you the time you asked for.

He read it twice, then sent it.

This time, he didn't wait for a reply.

He put the phone away.

Across the ballroom, Lauren approached him.

“Brandon, we need to talk about tomorrow.””

He looked at her.

“What's happening tomorrow?””

“My parents are hosting brunch. Several people from tonight are coming, and we need to decide what we're going to tell them.””

Brandon shook his head.

“I'm not planning tomorrow around what people might think.””

“Then what are you planning around?””

“Whether we're ready to get married.””

Lauren froze.

For a few seconds, the party noise seemed to fade around them.

“What did you just say?””

Brandon swallowed.

“I said we need to think about whether we're ready to get married.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Are you threatening to cancel our wedding because of one argument?””

“No. I'm asking whether the way we treated my mother tonight reflects the kind of marriage we're about to build.””

Lauren shook her head.

“You can't do this to me.””

He looked at her, remembering the woman he had fallen in love with, the laughter they had shared, the quiet evenings when they had planned their future.

He did love her.

That was what made the moment so difficult.

But love could not erase what he had seen.

“I don't want to hurt you,” he said.

“But I can't pretend tonight didn't happen.””

Lauren turned away, pressing her fingers against her eyes.

Brandon gave her space.

Then Simone approached once more.

“Brandon, may I speak with you privately?””

He turned.

“Of course.””

Simone waited until Lauren had stepped away before speaking.

“The director has completed another part of the review. We have confirmed an important detail regarding Ms. Denise's role.””

Brandon felt the tension return to his shoulders.

“What detail?””

Simone glanced at her tablet.

“I can confirm that she was not simply acting as a family member helping with an event. Her authorization was connected to a separate arrangement, and we need to establish how that arrangement should be handled now that she has withdrawn her approval.””

Brandon frowned.

“A separate arrangement?””

“Yes.””

“What kind?””

Simone paused.

“I don't want to give you incomplete information. The director is contacting the appropriate representative to verify the remaining details.””

Brandon stared at her.

“Can you tell me whether my mother is in any trouble?””

“No. Nothing in the review so far suggests that. We're simply making sure the instructions are handled correctly.””

He exhaled.

“Thank you.””

Simone nodded.

“I'll update you when I can.””

She started to leave, but Brandon stopped her.

“Simone?””

“Yes?””

“Did my mother arrange all of this because she wanted to impress us?””

Simone considered the question.

“I can't speak to her personal reasons. But I can tell you that she was careful about the details, considerate toward the guests, and very clear that she didn't want recognition for her involvement.””

Brandon looked down.

Of course she had been.

He had spent the entire evening trying to understand what his mother wanted from him.

He had never stopped to consider that she might have wanted nothing more than to see him happy.

Simone walked away.

Brandon remained beside the stage, listening to the quiet music and the low conversations of the guests.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unfamiliar number.

He opened it.

*Mr. Brandon, this is Patricia, the representative handling the remaining authorization review. Before we proceed, I need to arrange a private conversation with you and your mother.

There is an important detail concerning the purpose of her involvement that neither you nor Ms. Lauren appears to have been told.*

Brandon read the message twice.

He looked toward the exit.

His mother had left the party without a scene, without a threat, and without demanding an apology.

Yet the consequences of her decision were still unfolding.

He typed a reply.

What detail?

The response came almost immediately.

I'm sorry, but I can't discuss it by text. Your mother will need to decide whether she wants to explain it to you herself.

Brandon lowered his phone.

For the first time, he understood that the story of the evening might not be about what his mother had withdrawn.

May you like

It might be about what she had quietly given him—and why she had never told him.

And whatever that truth was, he could no longer demand that she reveal it simply because he was finally ready to listen.
