Chapter 6: The Hospital Record That Changed Everything

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The words on the screen seemed impossible.

*THE NIGHT THEY SWITCHED THE BABIES.*

I looked at Sophia.

Then at the hospital wristband.

Then back at the tablet.

“Marcus,” I said quietly, “tell me what I'm looking at.””

He didn't answer immediately.

He enlarged the thumbnail.

The photograph became clearer.

Emily was standing beside a hospital bed, holding the hand of a little girl.

The child had dark braids.

She looked about Sophia's age.

But something else caught my attention.

The hospital bracelet on the child's wrist carried a different name.

Not Sophia.

I read it twice.

*LILY CARTER.*

“Who is Lily Carter?””

Marcus slowly shook his head.

“I don't know.””

I turned toward Sophia.

“Sweetheart, have you ever heard that name?””

She shook her head.

“No, Daddy.””

I sat beside her.

“It's okay.””

But nothing about this was okay.

Marcus took the tablet.

“Let me see whether I can recover the original video.””

He connected the USB drive to his laptop.

Several folders appeared.

One contained financial records.

Another contained scanned hospital documents.

The third was labeled:

*EMILY — PERSONAL.*

Marcus opened it.

There were dozens of files.

Some were photographs.

Others were medical reports.

One document had a date matching Sophia's birth.

I leaned forward.

“What is that?””

Marcus opened the file.

It was a hospital discharge summary.

The patient's name was Emily Carter.

Under the section marked DELIVERY DETAILS, I saw the words:

*MULTIPLE BIRTH — TWO FEMALE INFANTS.*

My mouth went dry.

I read the line again.

Two female infants.

I turned toward Marcus.

“Why does this say two babies?””

He scrolled down.

There was another section.

*INFANT A: SOPHIA CARTER.*

*INFANT B: LILY CARTER.*

My heart began pounding.

“That's impossible.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“No. Emily gave birth to one child. Sophia. I was there.””

He nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

“Then why are there two names?””

He continued scrolling.

The next page contained a handwritten note.

It was signed by a nurse named Helen Morris.

*TRANSFER OF INFANT B APPROVED BY MATERNAL AUTHORIZATION.*

I stared at the sentence.

“Transferred where?””

Marcus searched the remaining files.

Then he found another document.

It was a hospital transfer form.

The receiving institution was listed as Greenfield Children's Medical Center.

The date was six years earlier.

I remembered the hospital.

Emily had been treated there during her pregnancy.

I looked at the discharge summary again.

“Why didn't I know about this?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Maybe because someone made sure you didn't.””

I stood.

“I want answers. Now.””

I called the number printed on the hospital document.

The automated system directed me to patient records.

I explained that I was trying to verify an old maternity record.

The representative asked for identifying information.

I provided Emily's full name and the date of birth.

There was a pause.

“Sir,” the woman said, “these records are archived.””

“Can you tell me whether the patient delivered twins?””

“I can't release protected medical information without proper authorization.””

“I am the father.””

“I'm sorry, sir. We need documentation.””

I glanced at Marcus.

He was already scanning the document.

“We have the original hospital record.””

The woman asked me to submit it through the hospital's secure records department.

I thanked her and ended the call.

Sophia had been listening quietly.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“What's wrong?””

“Did Mommy have another baby?””

I swallowed.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

“Did I have a sister?””

I couldn't answer.

She looked down at her shoes.

“Would Mommy have told me?””

I knelt beside her.

“If she had another baby, I believe she would have wanted you to know.””

Sophia nodded.

Then she asked something that nearly broke me.

“Do you think my sister is lonely?””

I pulled her into my arms.

“I don't know, baby. But if she's out there, we'll find out what happened.””

A knock sounded at the front door.

Marcus looked up.

“Were you expecting someone?””

“No.””

I checked the security monitor.

A woman stood outside.

She was in her late sixties, wearing a beige coat and holding a leather handbag.

I didn't recognize her.

Then she lifted a small identification card toward the camera.

*HELEN MORRIS — RETIRED MATERNITY NURSE.*

I opened the door but kept the security chain in place.

“Can I help you?””

The woman looked past me.

“Are you Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Helen Morris. I used to work at St. Mary's Hospital.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why are you here?””

She glanced toward the hallway.

“Because I heard you've found Emily's records.””

I looked at Marcus.

He had gone completely still.

“Who told you that?””

Helen took a slow breath.

“Someone called me this morning. They said the documents had surfaced.””

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“I was told not to say.””

I opened the door slightly wider.

“Come inside.””

Helen entered and sat in the living room.

She looked at the photographs on the table.

When she saw Emily's picture, her eyes filled with tears.

“I remember her,” she whispered.

I sat opposite her.

“Did my wife give birth to twins?””

Helen looked down at her hands.

“Yes.””

The word struck me like a hammer.

I leaned forward.

“Why was I told there was only one baby?””

Helen closed her eyes.

“Because the second child was removed from the maternity ward.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She nodded.

“Emily was told the baby had died.””

My throat tightened.

“And did she?””

Helen shook her head.

“No.””

Sophia appeared at the staircase.

She had heard everything.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“Go upstairs, sweetheart.””

But Helen looked at her.

Then she looked at me again.

“Is that Sophia?””

“Yes.””

Helen's face crumpled.

“Oh, my goodness.””

She stood and approached Sophia slowly.

“You look just like your mother.””

Sophia stepped closer to me.

“Did you know Mommy?””

Helen nodded.

“I helped deliver you.””

Sophia looked up.

“Did you see my sister?””

Helen covered her mouth.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

I stood.

“Who took her?””

Helen returned to the sofa.

“I wasn't the person who made the decision. I was working the night shift. Emily was unconscious after complications during delivery. Your brother arrived with another woman.””

My blood ran cold.

“Andrew?””

Helen nodded.

“And Patricia.””

I stared at her.

“Patricia was there?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She introduced herself as a family representative. She said Daniel Carter had authorized the transfer.””

I shook my head.

“I never authorized anything.””

“I know that now.””

Helen reached into her handbag and removed an old photograph.

It showed two newborn babies lying beside each other.

One had a pink blanket.

The other had a blue one.

I took the photograph.

On the back were two names.

Sophia.

Lily.

My hands trembled.

“Where is Lily now?””

Helen looked at the photograph.

“I don't know.””

“Who took her?””

She swallowed.

“Andrew signed the transfer papers. Patricia accompanied him.””

I felt a wave of anger so intense that I had to grip the edge of the table.

“Why would they do that?””

Helen looked at Sophia.

Then at me.

“Because there was money involved.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What money?””

Helen opened her handbag again.

She removed a folded document.

It was a copy of a trust agreement.

The name at the top was unfamiliar.

But the beneficiary section contained two names.

*SOPHIA CARTER.*

*LILY CARTER.*

The trust had been established using funds from an insurance settlement.

I looked at the date.

It was six months before Emily died.

I felt dizzy.

Helen continued.

“Emily discovered that someone had arranged a financial agreement connected to both children. She tried to stop it.””

I stared at her.

“Did she know Lily was alive?””

Helen nodded.

“She came back to the hospital three days later. She was crying. She begged me to tell her where her second baby had gone.””

“Did you tell her?””

“I didn't know.””

Helen wiped her eyes.

“She said she was going to find her daughter. She said she had proof that Andrew and Patricia had taken the baby somewhere.””

I looked toward Marcus.

He was staring at the trust document.

Then Helen said something that made the room go silent.

“Emily didn't die immediately after the accident.””

I turned back to her.

“What?””

Helen's voice trembled.

“She was brought to the emergency department. She was alive when she arrived.””

I could barely breathe.

“Why wasn't I told?””

“Because the medical team received an instruction that only one family representative was authorized to receive updates.””

“Who?””

Helen looked directly at me.

“Andrew.””

My brother had been the one making decisions.

Not me.

Not Emily's husband.

Andrew.

I took out my phone.

“I want his number.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Daniel, wait.””

“I'm done waiting.””

Helen grabbed my sleeve.

“There's something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small cassette recorder.

“I kept this because Emily asked me to.””

My heart pounded.

“What is it?””

“Her final message.””

Helen pressed the play button.

A burst of static filled the room.

Then Emily's voice emerged.

Weak.

Frightened.

But unmistakably hers.

“Daniel, if you ever hear this, please forgive me for not telling you sooner.””

I closed my eyes.

Her voice continued.

“I found Lily. She's alive. And she's closer to us than you think.””

The recording crackled.

Then Emily whispered:

“She's being raised by someone you trust.””

The tape stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Marcus.

Then Helen.

Then my daughter.

Sophia was staring at the recorder.

“Daddy?””

I took her hand.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

She looked toward the front window.

“Why is Uncle Andrew standing outside?””

I turned.

A black car was parked across the street.

Andrew stood beside it.

He was holding his phone.

And he was staring directly at our house.

Then my phone rang.

His name appeared on the screen.

I answered.

“Andrew?””

His voice was calm.

Far too calm.

“Daniel, I heard you've been asking questions.””

I stared through the window.

“Where is Lily?””

There was a long silence.

Then my brother sighed.

“You should never have opened that envelope.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Where is my daughter?””

Andrew looked toward the window.

Then he smiled.

“Which one, Daniel?””

May you like

The call ended.

And in that moment, I understood that the nightmare surrounding Emily's death had only just begun.
