Chapter 10: The Woman Who Bought the Silence

A black sedan appeared outside the warehouse.

It stopped beneath the broken security light.

Marcus watched through the office window.

His mother stepped out.

She was wearing a long gray coat and holding a leather handbag.

A second person emerged from the passenger side.

Daniel Carter.

Marcus recognized him from the old photographs.

He was older now, with silver at his temples, but his face was unmistakable.

Andrew moved beside Marcus.

“That's him.””

Detective Bennett signaled to the officers.

“Stay where you are.””

But Marcus had already stepped into the corridor.

“Daniel!””

The man turned.

His expression changed immediately.

“Marcus.””

“What did you do to my daughter?””

Daniel raised both hands.

“Listen to me.””

“Answer the question!””

Daniel looked toward Marcus's mother.

She lowered her eyes.

Then Daniel said:

“I didn't give Lily anything.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I never entered her hospital room.””

“Then why were you paying Vanessa?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because your father told me to.””

Andrew stepped forward.

“Stop lying.””

Daniel turned.

“Andrew, you don't understand.””

“I understand enough. You helped Dad hide the altered medical records.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

Marcus moved closer.

“From what?””

Daniel looked at his mother.

She finally spoke.

“Marcus, please. We can explain.””

“Then explain.””

His mother began crying.

“Your father discovered Vanessa had been using his company accounts to buy medication.””

Daniel interrupted.

“That's not what happened.””

She turned sharply.

“Be quiet.””

Marcus stared at them.

“You knew?””

His mother nodded.

“I found out three weeks before Lily died.””

The room became silent.

Marcus's voice dropped.

“And you did nothing?””

“I was trying to get the bottle away from her.””

“Why didn't you call the police?””

“Your father said he would handle it.””

“Your father is dead!””

His mother flinched.

Marcus continued.

“And Lily is dead!””

She covered her face.

“I know.””

“No. You don't. You weren't in that hospital room when she was asking for me.””

His mother began sobbing.

Daniel looked toward Officer Brooks.

“I want to cooperate.””

Detective Bennett stepped forward.

“Then start with the missing medical records.””

Daniel nodded.

He explained that he had been responsible for maintaining several financial and legal records for Marcus's father.

After his death, Daniel discovered that Vanessa had been receiving money from the family trust.

He had confronted her.

She threatened to expose his role in altering the original paternity documents.

Daniel admitted that he had helped conceal the first false report.

But he insisted that he had never intended to harm Lily.

“Why did you meet her?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel looked confused.

“Who?””

“My daughter.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“I never met her.””

Marcus showed him the drawing.

Lily's picture.

Uncle Daniel.

Daniel studied it.

Then he shook his head.

“I don't know why she drew that.””

Claire's voice came from behind them.

“Because she met you at school.””

Everyone turned.

Claire had arrived with another officer.

She looked directly at Daniel.

“I remember now. Lily told me a man had come to her school and asked whether she wanted to know a secret about her father.””

Daniel lowered his head.

Marcus stepped forward.

“What secret?””

Daniel finally answered.

“That your father had been paying people to keep the original records hidden.””

“Did you tell Lily?””

“No. I told her I couldn't discuss adult matters with a child.””

“Then why did she know your name?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because Vanessa showed her my photograph.””

Marcus looked toward the police.

Detective Bennett asked:

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Vanessa wanted Lily to believe there was another man who could replace her father.””

Marcus felt sick.

Daniel continued.

“She told Lily that you were too busy to be her father. She said I was someone who knew the truth about your family.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“Why would she do that?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Because she wanted you to stop paying attention to Claire and Lily.””

Officer Brooks stepped closer.

“And the medication?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Vanessa obtained it through an illegal supplier. Your father discovered the purchase and demanded she return it.””

Marcus stared.

“Then why didn't he report her?””

“Because Vanessa threatened to reveal the financial arrangements your father had made.””

Detective Bennett asked, “What arrangements?””

Daniel looked toward Marcus's mother.

She began crying.

“Your father had been moving money through several companies. He was afraid the investigation would expose everything.””

Marcus felt his stomach turn.

His father had protected his reputation even when his granddaughter was in danger.

Then Daniel reached into his coat.

Officer Brooks immediately raised his hand.

“Don't move.””

Daniel slowly removed a small memory card.

“I have the recording.””

Detective Bennett took it.

“What's on it?””

“A conversation between Vanessa and your father.””

Officer Brooks secured the card.

“We'll review it through the proper forensic process.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Why didn't you give this to the police earlier?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Vanessa?””

“Of your family.””

Marcus shook his head.

Then the warehouse doors opened.

Vanessa stood there.

Her hair was disheveled.

Her face was pale.

Two officers followed her inside.

She looked directly at Marcus.

“You still don't understand.””

Marcus stared.

“Understand what?””

“That I didn't want Lily dead.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Then why did you give her that medication?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I thought it would help her sleep.””

“Why?””

“Because she wouldn't stop asking for Marcus!””

Claire's face hardened.

“She was dying. She wanted her father.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I know!””

Marcus stepped toward her.

“Then why did you tell her I didn't want her?””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Losing you.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You destroyed my relationship with my daughter because you were afraid I'd love her?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never thought it would go this far.””

Officer Brooks asked:

“Did you administer the substance?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I gave her a small amount.””

“Without medical authorization?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know it was a veterinary sedative?””

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Claire began crying.

Vanessa continued.

“I didn't know it would interact with her treatment. I thought she would sleep. I thought the nurses would notice if something was wrong.””

Officer Brooks looked at her.

“Did you tell the medical staff what you had given her?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

Vanessa's voice became a whisper.

“Because I knew I'd be arrested.””

Detective Bennett stepped forward.

“And the message sent from Marcus's account?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“I sent it.””

He felt his knees weaken.

“You sent my daughter that message?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she kept asking to call you. I wanted her to stop.””

Marcus stared at her.

“She apologized to you.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She said she was sorry.””

“She was seven years old!””

“I know.””

Marcus's voice broke.

“She thought her father hated her.””

Vanessa began sobbing.

“I know.””

He stepped away.

Officer Brooks signaled to the officers.

“Ms. Reed, you're under arrest pending the investigation into the events surrounding Lily Hale's death and the suspected unauthorized administration of medication.””

Vanessa didn't resist.

As they escorted her away, she turned toward Marcus one last time.

“I'm sorry.””

May you like

He didn't answer.

There was nothing left to say.
