Chapter 4: My Brother Was Holding the Key
For several seconds, I couldn't recognize the man on Michael's phone.
The image was grainy, the hallway lights reflecting off the polished floor, but there was no mistaking the familiar shape of his shoulders or the silver watch I'd given him for his thirtieth birthday.
Ethan.
My younger brother.
My best man.
The man who had stood beside me that morning and promised, with one hand on my shoulder, that everything would go perfectly.
On the screen, Ethan glanced toward the ballroom entrance. Then he looked down at the key in his hand and walked toward the utility closet.
I felt Emma's fingers curl into the back of my jacket.
"Daddy?"" she whispered.
I immediately turned away from the phone and crouched in front of her.
"I'm here, sweetheart.""
"Are we going home?""
The question was so small, so ordinary, that it hurt more than anything Vanessa had said.
"Yes," I answered.
"We're going home.""
She nodded, but her eyes remained fixed on my face, searching for something I couldn't quite give her yet.
Certainty.
I kissed her forehead and stood.
"Michael, play it.""
Vanessa moved before he could touch the screen.
"No.""
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked at the phone, then at Ethan's frozen image.
"That recording has nothing to do with what happened to Emma.""
Michael frowned.
"Ma'am, you haven't even seen the rest of it.""
"I don't need to.""
"Then why are you so worried about it?"" Andre asked.
Vanessa's face reddened.
"Because this man is filming private conversations and showing them to strangers!""
"We're not strangers," my father said coldly.
"We're the people who watched you deny locking a child in a closet.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Daniel, please. Your brother is your family. You're not going to let some video destroy that, are you?""
I stared at her.
"You just asked me to protect my relationship with my brother before I've even seen what he did.""
"I'm asking you to think rationally.""
"No. You're asking me to stop looking.""
Michael pressed play.
The corridor appeared again.
Ethan entered the frame carrying a small brass key. He stopped in front of the closet, tested the handle, and looked over his shoulder.
Then he unlocked the door.
He opened it only a few inches.
The camera couldn't see inside, but I watched Ethan lean forward and say something to whoever was in there.
My stomach tightened.
He waited.
Then he closed the door, turned the key, and pocketed it.
He didn't leave immediately.
Instead, he stood with one hand resting on the latch, looking down the corridor toward the ballroom.
After several seconds, he walked away.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I could hear the distant hum of the air-conditioning and the faint clatter of dishes from the reception kitchen.
My father slowly turned toward me.
"Daniel.""
I raised a hand.
I wasn't ready to hear what he had to say.
"Michael," I asked, "how long ago was that?""
"About twenty minutes before the recording on my phone. The equipment camera was running because we were checking the audio system.""
"Can you show us the timestamp?""
Michael tapped the screen.
The numbers appeared.
Twenty minutes before Emma had screamed for me.
Ethan had unlocked the closet.
Then he'd locked it again.
I felt as if someone had pulled the floor out from beneath me.
"Where is he?"" I asked.
Andre looked toward the ballroom.
"He was there a minute ago.""
Vanessa suddenly stepped between me and the entrance.
"Daniel, don't do this.""
I looked at her.
"Move.""
She didn't.
"You're upset. I understand that. But you don't know why Ethan was there.""
"Then he can tell me.""
"He was probably helping me.""
The words came too quickly.
Everyone heard them.
Vanessa seemed to realize her mistake at the same moment I did.
I stared at her.
"Helping you do what?""
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I stepped around her.
"Andre, stay with Emma and my father.""
My father immediately shook his head.
"I'm coming with you.""
"No, Dad. Please stay with her.""
Marcus glanced down at his granddaughter, then reluctantly nodded.
"Don't let him talk you out of what you saw.""
I gave him a tight nod.
Then I walked toward the ballroom.
The doors opened onto a room that looked as though nothing had happened.
White roses climbed the columns. Crystal glasses sparkled beneath the chandeliers. The wedding cake stood beside a display of framed photographs of Vanessa and me.
Our smiling faces stared back at me from every table.
In one photograph, Ethan had his arm around my shoulder.
In another, Vanessa rested her head against mine.
I remembered taking those pictures. I remembered thinking how fortunate I was to have found someone who seemed to fit into my life so naturally.
Now the photographs looked like evidence from a life that had never existed.
Guests turned as I entered.
My best man stood near the head table, holding a glass of water and speaking to one of the groomsmen.
When he saw me, his smile faded.
"Daniel," he said.
"What's going on?""
I stopped in front of him.
"Where's the key?""
His eyes narrowed.
"What key?""
"The one you used to lock Emma in the closet.""
Ethan glanced around the room.
Several guests had begun listening.
He set his glass on the table.
"Can we talk privately?""
"No.""
"Daniel, come on.""
"You had a key. You opened the closet. You shut the door and locked it again. I watched you do it.""
For the first time in our lives, Ethan looked genuinely afraid of me.
Not because I was threatening him.
Because he knew I had seen something he couldn't explain away.
"Where did you get that?"" he asked.
"Michael recorded you.""
Ethan's gaze flicked toward the hallway.
Then he lowered his voice.
"You don't understand what happened.""
"Then explain it.""
He rubbed his mouth with one hand.
"Vanessa asked me to help with something.""
"What something?""
"She said Emma was upset and needed a few minutes alone.""
"So you locked her in a closet?""
"I didn't know she was going to stay in there that long.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I stared at him.
"You knew she was inside?""
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"I checked on her.""
"When?""
"Before the ceremony.""
"Did you hear her crying?""
He looked away.
I stepped closer.
"Did you hear my daughter crying?""
"Daniel, keep your voice down.""
"Did you?""
Ethan finally looked at me.
"Yes.""
The single word landed between us.
I felt my hands curl into fists, then forced them open.
"Why didn't you let her out?""
He glanced at the guests again.
"Because Vanessa said you needed to get through the ceremony first.""
I almost laughed.
It was such an absurd answer that my mind refused to accept it.
"You let my daughter sit in a locked closet because you were worried about my wedding?""
"She said she'd open it after the photographs.""
"Photographs?""
Ethan swallowed.
"She didn't want Emma interrupting the ceremony.""
I stared at my brother, trying to find the boy I'd grown up with.
The boy who had slept on the floor beside my bed when I had pneumonia at twelve.
The boy who had helped me assemble Emma's crib before she was born.
The boy who had cried harder than I had at Rachel's funeral.
"Did you know Vanessa had locked her in there earlier?"" I asked.
His silence answered me.
I took one step back.
Ethan reached for my arm.
"Daniel, listen. I was trying to keep things from falling apart.""
I pulled away.
"You were trying to protect Vanessa.""
"I was trying to protect you!""
"From what?""
He looked toward the wedding decorations.
"From losing everything you've worked for.""
I stared at him.
Then I pointed toward the hallway.
"My daughter was in that closet, Ethan. She was screaming for me.""
His eyes glistened.
"I know.""
"No. You don't. Because you were outside the door, and you walked away.""
He lowered his head.
For a moment, I thought he might finally tell me the truth.
Instead, he whispered, "I thought it would be over quickly.""
I turned toward the ballroom doors.
"You're not my best man anymore.""
"Daniel—"
"And you're not coming near Emma.""
Ethan followed me.
"You can't cut me out of your life over one mistake.""
I stopped so suddenly that he nearly walked into me.
"One mistake?""
He flinched.
I pointed toward the corridor.
"Go look at that closet. Then tell me how many mistakes it takes to lock a seven-year-old child inside, hear her crying, and decide your brother's wedding photographs matter more.""
Ethan had no answer.
I walked away from him.
At the hallway entrance, Michael was waiting with my father and Emma.
My daughter ran to me the moment she saw me.
I dropped to my knees and caught her.
"Daddy, are we still getting married?""
The question stopped me cold.
I held her close.
"No, baby.""
She pulled back.
"Because of me?""
I cupped her face in both hands.
"Absolutely not.""
Her eyes searched mine.
"Then why?""
I looked over her shoulder at the ballroom, where my brother stood beneath the flowers, surrounded by people who had come to celebrate a wedding that would never happen.
"Because grown-ups sometimes make terrible choices," I said softly.
"And it's my job to make sure those choices don't hurt you anymore.""
Emma considered that for a moment.
Then she rested her head against my shoulder.
I thought the worst part was over.
I was wrong.
Michael approached slowly, holding his phone.
"Daniel, there's one more thing you should see.""
My father stiffened.
"What now?""
Michael looked uncomfortable.
"The first recording wasn't the only time Ethan went near that closet.""
He unlocked the phone and opened a different file.
"This one was recorded before the guests arrived.""
The screen lit up.
And there, beside the utility closet, stood Vanessa and Ethan.
They weren't arguing.
May you like
They were smiling.
And Vanessa was handing my brother something that looked exactly like an envelope of cash.
