Chapter 7: The Truth Behind Two Birth Certificates

“Aaliyah, open the door.””

Richard Hayes's voice carried through the old house with the confidence of a man who had spent his life expecting people to obey him.

Aaliyah stood at the top of the stairs, Vanessa's letter clutched against her chest. Beside her, Brielle had pulled out her phone and was quietly recording the sound of the knocking.

“Don't open it,” Brielle whispered.

“I wasn't planning to.””

The knocking came again.

“I know you're in there,” Richard called.

“And I know you have something that belongs to me.””

Aaliyah walked to the top of the stairs but kept her distance from the front door.

“You mean my mother's letter?””

“Your biological mother's letter.””

The correction made her stomach tighten.

“You don't get to decide who my mother is.””

Richard sighed.

“That's exactly why we need to talk.””

“Then talk through the door.””

For a moment, there was silence.

Then Richard said, “The document you're holding could destroy the lives of people who had nothing to do with what happened twenty-nine years ago.””

Aaliyah glanced at the hospital transfer form on the desk.

“You mean people like Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“Or people like you?””

Another silence.

Richard answered calmly.

“Especially people like me.””

That admission unsettled her more than a denial would have.

Brielle stepped closer.

“Ask him why the birth certificate was changed,” she whispered.

Aaliyah raised her voice.

“Why were there two birth certificates?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his tone had changed.

“Because two children were born that night, and one of them was never supposed to leave the hospital.””

Aaliyah gripped the banister.

“Which child?””

“Yours.””

“My name is Aaliyah Carter.””

“That's the name Denise gave you. Your birth name was Amara Denise Bell.””

Aaliyah closed her eyes.

She had read those words in the letter. She had seen them on the hospital bracelet. Hearing them spoken by the man who had helped conceal her identity made them feel like a verdict.

“And Daniel?”” she asked.

“Daniel Hayes was born thirty minutes after you.””

“Same hospital?””

“Yes.””

“Same mother?””

“No.””

“Then why were our birth certificates connected?””

Richard exhaled.

“Because your mother died before the hospital could complete the paperwork, and my wife had suffered several miscarriages. She was devastated. I was desperate to give her a child.””

Aaliyah felt sick.

“Are you saying you gave me to your wife?””

“No. I'm saying I arranged for the records to be changed so that no one would know where you came from.””

“That's not the same thing.””

“No,” Richard admitted.

“It isn't.””

Brielle whispered something Aaliyah couldn't hear.

Aaliyah stepped toward the door.

“Why?””

Richard's reply came slowly.

“Your mother, Vanessa, had discovered evidence of financial crimes committed by my business partners. She was preparing to testify. When she died, the people involved believed Marcus had taken the evidence.

They threatened him. They threatened you.””

“So you changed my identity to protect me?””

“I changed it because I believed it was the only way to keep you alive.””

“And you let Denise raise me under a false name.””

“Yes.””

“You let Marcus believe I was gone.””

Richard didn't answer.

Aaliyah felt a sharp pain beneath her ribs.

“You let him mourn me.””

“He believed you were safe.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

Richard's voice grew quieter.

“Marcus was told that if he stayed away, you would be protected. He agreed.””

Aaliyah backed away from the stairs.

“No.””

“I'm telling you what happened.””

“No. You're telling me what you want me to believe.””

She turned toward the desk and gathered the documents.

“If you were trying to protect me, why did you keep the original birth certificate?””

“Because it was evidence of what I'd done.””

“Evidence of a crime?””

“Evidence of a decision that was never mine to make.””

For the first time, Richard sounded tired.

Aaliyah looked at Brielle.

“Call the police.””

Richard heard her.

“You can do that,” he said.

“But if you do, you'll need to explain why your mother signed a document agreeing to the arrangement.””

Aaliyah froze.

“What document?””

“The agreement between Denise, Marcus, and me.””

“You said you arranged everything.””

“I did.””

“Then why would my mother agree?””

“Because she believed it was the only way to protect you.””

Aaliyah pressed the phone against her ear.

“Richard, I'm going to ask you one last question. If you lie to me, I'll make sure every document in this house reaches the authorities.””

“Ask.””

“Was Daniel ever supposed to marry me?””

Silence.

The silence lasted too long.

Aaliyah's heart began to pound.

“Answer me.””

“No,” Richard said.

The word seemed to drain the air from the room.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I never intended for you and Daniel to become involved.””

“But you knew we were dating.””

“Yes.””

“You met me at family dinners. You sat across from me at Christmas. You congratulated us when he proposed.””

“I did.””

“And you never said anything?””

Richard's voice hardened.

“Because I was trying to keep the past buried.””

Aaliyah stared at the door.

“You knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew who Daniel was.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let us fall in love?””

Richard answered with a sentence she would never forget.

“Because by the time I realized how serious your relationship had become, it was too late to separate you without exposing everything.””

Brielle stopped recording.

Aaliyah felt the floor tilt beneath her.

“You let me plan a wedding with your son while you hid the truth about my birth.””

“I never wanted this.””

“You wanted me to stay ignorant.””

“I wanted you to stay safe.””

“Stop calling it safety!””

Her voice broke.

“Every time someone says they were protecting me, I discover another lie.””

Richard fell silent.

Then he said, “There is something you need to understand about Daniel.””

Aaliyah closed her eyes.

“Of course there is.””

“Daniel wasn't told the full story until six months ago. He believed you were an unrelated woman. When he discovered your birth records, he was horrified.””

“Then why did he keep it from me?””

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

Aaliyah's throat tightened.

“Did you tell him we might be related?””

Richard didn't answer quickly enough.

Aaliyah stepped toward the door.

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

The word struck like a slap.

Brielle covered her mouth.

Aaliyah felt a strange calm settle over her.

It was the calm that came when pain became too large to feel all at once.

“When did you tell him?””

“Six months ago.””

“And he stayed with me?””

“Yes.””

“He proposed to me?””

Richard said nothing.

Aaliyah looked down at the engagement ring she had left on the makeup table at the venue.

Daniel had proposed on a rooftop overlooking Atlanta. He had told her that he wanted to build a life with her, that he wanted children who would grow up surrounded by the kind of love she had always given others.

She had cried.

She had said yes.

And all the while, the people around her had known there was a question she had never been allowed to ask.

“Richard,” she whispered, “did you know Daniel and I might be brother and sister?””

His reply was barely audible.

“I knew there was a possibility.””

Aaliyah stumbled backward.

Brielle caught her.

For several seconds, she couldn't breathe.

Then the front door handle rattled.

Richard was trying to enter.

“Open the door,” he said urgently.

“You need to hear the rest.””

“No.””

“Aaliyah, please.””

“No!””

She heard him strike the door with the flat of his hand.

“You don't understand what you're doing!””

Aaliyah looked at Brielle.

“Get the documents. All of them.””

Brielle grabbed the notebook, the hospital forms, and the photographs.

Aaliyah held on to Vanessa's letter.

They hurried down the hallway toward the back stairs.

Behind them, Richard shouted her name.

Then came a sound that made them both stop.

The front door had opened.

Someone had entered the house.

Aaliyah turned.

“Richard?””

No answer.

Instead, she heard another man's voice.

“Mr. Hayes, step away from the stairs.””

Aaliyah recognized it immediately.

Marcus.

Her father had arrived.

And for the first time in twenty years, the two men who had controlled the story of her life were standing in the same house.

Marcus appeared at the foot of the stairs wearing a dark jacket and carrying no weapon. He looked older than the photograph, with silver at his temples and deep lines around his eyes.

But his gaze was unmistakable.

When he saw Aaliyah, he stopped.

For one long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Marcus whispered, “Amara.””

Aaliyah gripped the railing.

She had imagined this moment a thousand different ways since the first phone call. She had imagined running into his arms, demanding answers, slapping him, or simply standing still while he explained everything.

She had not imagined how difficult it would be to look at him.

“You knew,” she said.

Marcus nodded.

“I knew who you were.””

“You knew my name.””

“Yes.””

“You knew where I was.””

“Not always.””

“But you knew I was alive.””

His face crumpled.

“Yes.””

Aaliyah stepped down one stair.

“Then why didn't you come?””

Marcus looked at Richard.

Richard said nothing.

“Tell me,” Aaliyah demanded.

Marcus swallowed.

“Because I was afraid that if I came back, the people who killed your mother would come for you next.””

Aaliyah stared at him.

“Did you know Daniel and I were together?””

“No.””

“Did you know we were getting married?””

Marcus shook his head.

“When I found out, I tried to reach you.””

“And someone stopped you?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Richard.

Richard's expression had become unreadable.

“Your father is leaving out an important detail,” he said.

Aaliyah turned toward him.

“What detail?””

Richard looked directly at her.

“Marcus didn't just disappear twenty years ago.””

He paused.

“He was the one who signed the original agreement to keep you away from Vanessa's family.””

Aaliyah stared at Marcus.

Her father lowered his head.

May you like

And in that moment, she realized the truth had not arrived to rescue her from a lie.

It had arrived to reveal how many people had helped build it.
