Chapter 8: The Nanny Who Tried to Warn Me

Angela Brooks agreed to meet us at a small café on the other side of town.

My lawyer arranged the meeting, and Renee came with me.

The children stayed with a trusted family friend while we were away.

I arrived twenty minutes early.

I ordered coffee but barely touched it.

Renee sat across from me.

“Are you ready for this?””

“No.””

She reached across the table.

“Whatever she says, remember that you were grieving. You trusted someone who was supposed to help.””

I looked out the window.

“I should have listened to Emily.””

Renee didn't argue.

At exactly 10:30, a woman entered the café.

She was in her late thirties, with shoulder-length braids and a dark green coat.

She looked around before approaching our table.

“Daniel?””

I stood.

“Angela?””

She nodded.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said, “You look exactly the same.””

I managed a faint smile.

“You don't.””

She gave a nervous laugh.

“Life changes people.””

We sat down.

Angela placed her handbag beside her chair.

“I wasn't sure I should come.””

“Thank you for agreeing to meet.””

She looked at Renee.

“Hello.””

Renee nodded.

Angela turned back to me.

“I heard about Lily.””

My throat tightened.

“What did you hear?””

“That Vanessa contacted a placement agency. That child services are investigating. And that you found the pantry.””

I stared at her.

“You knew about the pantry?””

Angela looked down.

“Yes.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“How long?””

“Before I left.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

She looked up.

“I tried.””

I couldn't speak.

Angela took a deep breath.

“When I worked for you, Emily was still alive. I mostly helped with the children after school. Vanessa started visiting more often during that period.””

I nodded.

I remembered.

Angela continued.

“At first, everything seemed normal. Vanessa brought gifts. She played with Mason. She told Lily she was a pretty little girl.””

“And later?””

“She started making comments.””

“What kind of comments?””

Angela folded her hands.

“She would tell Lily to stop asking for attention. She'd say that your daughter was spoiled because you gave her too much affection.””

Renee's expression hardened.

Angela continued.

“One afternoon, I heard Vanessa tell Lily that she wasn't the center of the world. Lily was crying because she wanted you.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Did you tell Emily?””

“Yes.””

Angela's voice softened.

“Emily already knew something was wrong.””

I looked up.

“What did she say?””

“She told me to keep an eye on Lily when Vanessa was around.””

My chest tightened.

Angela reached into her handbag and took out an old phone.

“I kept some messages.””

She placed it on the table.

I stared at it.

“What is this?””

“An old phone. I used it when I worked at your house.””

She opened the message history.

There were several messages from Vanessa.

One read:

*Stop letting Lily eat snacks whenever she wants. She's getting too comfortable.*

Another:

*Don't let her go into the kitchen without asking me.*

Then I saw a message sent two days before Angela left.

*If Daniel asks why Lily is upset, tell him she's having another difficult day. Don't mention what happened after lunch.*

My hands went cold.

“What happened after lunch?””

Angela looked at me.

“Vanessa locked Lily in the pantry.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

“The week before I quit.””

“Why?””

“Lily spilled juice.””

Angela's eyes filled.

“She was crying and asking for you. Vanessa said she needed to learn that mistakes had consequences.””

I leaned forward.

“How long was she in there?””

“I'm not sure. I was outside with Mason. I heard her crying, and when I went inside, Vanessa told me to stay out of it.””

“Did you open the door?””

Angela nodded.

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

“Vanessa stopped me.””

Angela looked at Renee.

“She told me I was an employee and had no right to interfere with family discipline.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What did you do?””

“I waited until Vanessa went upstairs. Then I let Lily out.””

Angela's voice broke.

“She was shaking. She asked me whether she had to stay there until she stopped being hungry.””

Renee covered her mouth.

I stared at the table.

“What did you tell her?””

“I told her she could always come to me if she needed help.””

Angela wiped her eyes.

“Then I gave her a sandwich.””

I closed my eyes.

Angela continued.

“The next morning, Vanessa found out.””

“What happened?””

“She accused me of stealing food and undermining her authority. She said if I didn't leave immediately, she'd report me to the police.””

“Did she actually report you?””

“No. But she told me she knew people who could make sure I never worked with children again.””

I stared at her.

“Why didn't you contact me?””

Angela laughed sadly.

“I did.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“I called your office. Twice.””

I remembered receiving two missed calls from an unfamiliar number around that time.

I had been in meetings.

I had never returned them.

“Vanessa told me you were busy,” Angela continued.

“She said you knew everything and didn't want me interfering.””

I felt sick.

“She told you that?””

“Yes.””

Angela unlocked the phone again.

“She also sent me this.””

She showed me a message.

*If you contact Daniel again, I'll tell him you were taking pictures of the children without permission. I have enough evidence to make you look dangerous.*

I stared at the screen.

“Were you taking pictures?””

“No. I took one photograph of Lily's empty lunchbox because I wanted to remember the date. I was worried nobody would believe me.””

She scrolled.

There it was.

A photograph of a small lunchbox.

Inside were two crackers and a folded napkin.

The timestamp was from the same week Angela left.

I looked at her.

“Did you keep anything else?””

Angela nodded.

She opened a folder.

Inside were photographs of handwritten notes.

One was a list of rules.

Another was a small chart.

The final photograph showed Vanessa standing beside Lily near the pantry.

Lily's head was lowered.

Vanessa was pointing toward the door.

I felt my chest tighten.

“Why did you keep these?””

Angela looked directly at me.

“Because I knew one day someone would need to see them.””

Renee reached across the table.

“Thank you for not throwing them away.””

Angela nodded.

Then she turned to me.

“Daniel, there's something else.””

I braced myself.

“What?””

“Vanessa didn't start planning to send Lily away after you married her.””

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?””

Angela hesitated.

“She talked about it before Emily died.””

The café seemed to become very quiet.

I leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Angela took a breath.

“Emily once asked me to stay late. She wanted to talk about Vanessa.””

I listened.

“She told me she had found messages on Vanessa's phone. Messages about Lily's future.””

“What kind of messages?””

Angela looked uncomfortable.

“She said Vanessa was asking someone whether a stepmother could become a child's legal guardian if the biological mother died.””

My stomach dropped.

“Did Emily know who she was talking to?””

“No. She only knew the person was advising Vanessa about family arrangements.””

I sat back.

“Why didn't Emily tell me?””

“She said she was afraid you'd think she was jealous or paranoid.””

I looked down.

That was exactly what I had thought.

Angela continued.

“She also told me that Vanessa had asked questions about Lily's inheritance.””

Renee immediately looked at me.

“Emily's trust?””

I nodded.

Angela said, “I don't know the details. But I remember Vanessa saying that Lily had too much protection for a child who would eventually have a new family.””

I stared at her.

“Did you ever hear Vanessa mention money?””

Angela nodded.

“Once. She said Mason should be the priority because he was your son.””

I felt something break inside me.

Lily and Mason were both my children.

There was no ranking.

No competition.

No child who deserved more love.

I looked at Angela.

“Did you ever tell Emily about the pantry?””

“Yes. She asked me to document anything that made Lily uncomfortable.””

Angela opened another folder on her phone.

“There's a voice recording.””

My heart began pounding.

“What recording?””

“Emily asked me to save it.””

She placed the phone on the table.

“I've never listened to it again.””

I looked at Renee.

She nodded slowly.

Angela pressed play.

At first, there was background noise.

A door closing.

Then Emily's voice.

“Vanessa, why is Lily crying?””

Vanessa answered.

“Because she doesn't listen.””

“She is three years old.””

“She needs to learn.””

Emily's voice became firmer.

“She's asking for food.””

“She had her dinner.””

“She had three bites.””

“Then that's her choice.””

There was a pause.

Then Emily said something that made my hands tremble.

“You don't get to punish my daughter for needing me.””

Vanessa replied sharply.

“And you don't get to decide everything just because she's yours.””

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Renee was crying silently.

Angela looked down.

“I left two weeks later.””

I rubbed my eyes.

“Thank you for keeping this.””

Angela nodded.

Then she looked at me.

“There's one reason I agreed to meet you.””

“What is it?””

She hesitated.

“Vanessa contacted me last month.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“She wanted me to sign a statement saying that Lily had always been difficult and that Vanessa had been the only person capable of managing her behavior.””

I stared.

“Did you sign it?””

“No.””

“What did you say?””

“I told her I wouldn't lie.””

Angela looked toward the window.

“She said I would regret it.””

I felt anger rise again.

“Did she threaten you?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She told me that if the placement went through, Lily would be somewhere far away and nobody would ever know what happened in your house.””

I went completely still.

Renee whispered, “Oh my God.””

Angela continued.

“She also said that she had already found someone willing to take Lily.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

Angela shook her head.

“She didn't give me a name.””

Then she reached into her handbag one more time.

She removed a small envelope.

“I found this among my old employment papers. It was addressed to me, but I never opened it.””

I took it.

The handwriting belonged to Emily.

I carefully unfolded the paper.

It contained only three sentences.

Angela, if Daniel ever discovers what has been happening, please tell him to check the trust documents.

There is something important about Lily's inheritance.

Vanessa must never be allowed to control it.

I looked at Renee.

Then I looked at Angela.

The pantry had been about food.

The placement application had been about removing Lily.

May you like

But Emily's final warning suggested there was another reason Vanessa had been so determined to control my daughter.

And it might have been the reason this had started long before I ever married her.
