Chapter 5: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear
The mansion's foyer had never felt so small.
Marcus stood beside the round table, staring at his mother.
Bonita was near the staircase, gripping her handbag with both hands.
Daniel Reeves had instructed his colleagues to preserve the documents and record the chain of custody for the blue ledger.
But Marcus wasn't interested in the paperwork anymore.
He wanted one answer.
“Who was with Bonita at the hospital?””
Evelyn slowly sat down.
“Your father's final night was chaotic. The doctors were trying to stabilize him. I was frightened, and I wasn't thinking clearly.””
“Mom, please.””
She looked up.
“Robert was there.””
Marcus blinked.
“Robert Hayes?””
“Yes.””
“And Bonita?””
Evelyn nodded.
“They arrived together.””
Marcus looked toward his wife.
“You told me you arrived alone.””
Bonita's eyes filled.
“I was trying to help.””
“Why was Robert with you?””
“He was your father's business adviser.””
“After Dad had been hospitalized?””
“He had documents.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“What documents?””
Evelyn answered.
“Your father wanted to speak to his attorney. He had discovered something about the estate and wanted to make sure certain instructions were followed.””
Daniel placed his notebook on the table.
“Mrs. Bennett, are you saying Mr. Hayes and Mrs.
Bennett had access to Mr. Richard Bennett while he was hospitalized?””
“Yes.””
“And were you present when they entered his room?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I had gone to speak with the doctor. When I returned, the two of them were leaving.””
Marcus looked at Bonita.
“You were in Dad's room?””
She nodded.
“For a few minutes.””
“What did you say to him?””
“I don't remember.””
“You don't remember?””
“It was a terrible night, Marcus!””
Evelyn opened her folder again.
“There is something I never told you because I didn't want to destroy your marriage without knowing the truth.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What?””
“The hospital called me several days after the funeral. They had found an inconsistency in the visitor records.””
Daniel looked up.
“What kind of inconsistency?””
Evelyn removed a photocopy.
“Someone used my name to request access to your father's medical file.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why would anyone do that?””
“To obtain a copy of a document your father signed before his death.””
Bonita suddenly interrupted.
“That was me.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked exhausted.
“I requested the medical records. I was his daughter-in-law. I wanted to understand what happened.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You didn't use your own name.””
Bonita said nothing.
“You used mine.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
“Why?””
“Because the hospital wouldn't release certain documents without family authorization.””
“And you thought pretending to be my mother was acceptable?””
“I was desperate!””
“For what?””
Bonita covered her face.
“I needed to know whether your father had signed the revised trust agreement.””
Marcus stared at her.
“So you knew about the trust before he died?””
She lowered her hands.
“Yes.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Daniel quietly asked, “Did you obtain the document?””
Bonita hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“I found it in the hospital records.””
Marcus looked toward the folder.
“What document?””
Evelyn removed another sheet.
It was a copy of a medical consent form.
At the bottom were several handwritten instructions.
One line had been underlined.
No changes to the estate authorization shall take effect without independent legal verification.
Marcus read it twice.
“Dad wrote this?””
“Yes,” Evelyn said.
“Then why did Bonita have a document with a different beneficiary?””
Daniel answered.
“Because the document she presented may have been altered or fabricated. We need to compare the original records.””
Bonita shook her head.
“You're all acting like I planned some elaborate crime.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Didn't you?””
She began crying again.
“I was trying to protect our future.””
“From what?””
She looked toward the front windows.
For a moment, it seemed she might finally tell the truth.
Then her phone vibrated.
She checked the screen.
Her expression changed.
Evelyn noticed.
“Who is it?””
Bonita turned the screen away.
“Nothing.””
Daniel held out his hand.
“Mrs. Bennett, given the circumstances, I strongly recommend that you preserve all relevant communications.””
Bonita laughed bitterly.
“You want my phone now?””
“No one is asking you to surrender it. We're advising you not to delete or alter evidence.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who keeps texting you?””
She didn't answer.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his own phone.
“I'm going to call Robert.””
Evelyn immediately stood.
“Don't.””
“Why?””
“Because he wants to control what you hear.””
“Then what am I supposed to do?””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
He nodded and opened a separate envelope.
Inside was a small USB drive.
“This was delivered to our office anonymously two days ago,” Daniel explained.
“It contains an audio file and a short video recorded at the hospital.””
Marcus looked at the drive.
“Why didn't you show me earlier?””
“Because we needed to establish its authenticity.””
Daniel connected it to a laptop.
The screen displayed a video file dated the night Richard Bennett died.
The recording began with a view of a hospital corridor.
A nurse walked past.
A few seconds later, Bonita appeared.
She wore a dark coat and carried a document folder.
Robert followed her.
They entered a room.
The camera angle was poor, but the voices were clear.
Robert's voice came first.
“Richard, we need to finish this tonight.””
A weak voice answered.
“Get out.””
Marcus froze.
He recognized his father's voice.
Robert continued.
“You signed the preliminary agreement.””
“I signed nothing that gives you control.””
Bonita's voice followed.
“Richard, please. We're trying to resolve this.””
“Resolve what?””
“Your accounts.””
A pause.
Then Richard spoke again.
“Bonita, you told me Marcus knew.””
“He will understand.””
“No. He won't.””
Robert leaned closer.
“Richard, the transfer has already been initiated.””
The older man's voice suddenly became stronger.
“Then stop it.””
A sound followed.
Something struck the floor.
Then the recording became distorted.
Bonita stood up.
“Robert, we have to go.””
Richard's voice was faint.
“Call Evelyn.””
Robert answered.
“Not yet.””
Marcus gripped the edge of the table.
The recording continued.
Bonita approached the bed.
“Richard, just sign the confirmation.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“No!””
The audio crackled.
Then came a sentence that made Evelyn cover her mouth.
Richard said:
“If anything happens to me, Marcus must know who was in this room.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus stared at the laptop.
His father's last words had been recorded.
He turned toward Bonita.
“You were there when he said that.””
She shook her head.
“I didn't know he was being recorded.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“I was scared!””
“You heard him asking for Mom. Why didn't you call her?””
Bonita began sobbing.
“Because Robert told me not to.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You listened to Robert instead of my dying father?””
“I didn't know what he was going to do!””
Evelyn stood motionless.
Her hands trembled.
Daniel paused the recording.
“There is another file.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
“The audio was only part of the evidence. The video has a second section.””
He clicked the next file.
The screen showed a different angle.
A timestamp appeared.
11:46 p.m.
The hospital room was empty.
Then Robert entered.
He approached the bed and removed a small envelope from the drawer.
He opened it.
Read something.
And placed a different document inside.
Marcus leaned toward the screen.
“What is that?””
Daniel paused the image.
It was a hospital property receipt.
A handwritten note appeared beneath the signature.
*Original blue ledger transferred to R.H.*
Marcus looked toward the ledger on the table.
Then he looked at the screen.
“Robert took Dad's records from the hospital?””
Daniel nodded.
“That's what it appears to show.””
Evelyn slowly lowered herself into the chair.
“But why would your father have taken the blue ledger to the hospital?””
Marcus stared at the frozen image.
Then he noticed something else.
Behind Robert, reflected in the glass partition, stood a second person.
Someone holding a phone.
Someone recording Robert.
Daniel zoomed in.
The figure's face became slightly clearer.
Marcus recognized the clothing.
The dark coat.
The beige scarf.
The bracelet.
He turned slowly toward his wife.
“Bonita?””
She stepped backward.
“I wasn't recording him.””
“Then who was?””
Bonita shook her head.
But before anyone could ask another question, the mansion's security system chimed.
A notification appeared on the foyer monitor.
*FRONT GATE ACCESS REQUESTED.*
The security camera showed a woman standing outside the gate.
She was holding a large brown envelope.
Evelyn stood abruptly.
“Who is that?””
Marcus approached the screen.
The woman looked directly into the camera.
Then she raised a handwritten sign.

*I KNOW WHO CHANGED THE HOSPITAL RECORDS.*
