Chapter 4: The Debt Behind Vanessa's Smile

“Daniel, we need to discuss the money you borrowed using my daughter's name.””

The voice coming through the phone was deep, controlled, and unmistakably angry.

Daniel gripped the edge of the dining table.

“Mr. Collins, I think there's been a misunderstanding.””

Vanessa's father didn't respond immediately.

Then he said, “Don't insult me, Daniel. I have the loan documents in front of me.””

Vanessa took two steps toward the phone.

“Dad?””

Daniel turned sharply.

“Vanessa, don't.””

But her father had already heard her.

“Vanessa? Are you there?””

She swallowed.

“Yes, Dad.””

“Are you with Daniel?””

Nobody spoke.

Her father exhaled slowly.

“Put me on speaker.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Mr. Collins, perhaps we should discuss this privately.””

“I said put me on speaker.””

Daniel reluctantly tapped the screen.

The entire dining room went quiet.

“Vanessa,” her father began, “did you sign a personal guarantee for a business loan of $420,000?””

Vanessa's face turned white.

“What?””

“Don't pretend you don't know. Your signature is on the documents.””

She looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

Her father continued.

“The money was borrowed through a company registered under your name. The loan was secured using assets I transferred to you three years ago.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. Dad, I never borrowed that much money.””

“Then explain why your signature is on every page.””

“I didn't sign anything.””

Daniel suddenly reached for the phone.

“Mr. Collins, I can explain.””

“Daniel, I wasn't speaking to you.””

Daniel's hand stopped.

I watched Vanessa slowly understand what was happening.

She turned toward him.

“You told me the company was yours.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Vanessa, this isn't the time.””

“You said I was only listed as an administrative owner.””

“Please lower your voice.””

“Did you use my father's property?””

He didn't answer.

Her father spoke again.

“Vanessa, listen carefully. The bank has notified me that the loan is in default. The collateral is now at risk.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Dad, I swear I didn't know.””

“Then tell me why you let Daniel use your identity.””

“I didn't!””

Daniel slammed his palm onto the table.

“Enough!””

The sound made the champagne glasses tremble.

I stood beside the cake, watching him lose control of a situation he had spent years manipulating.

“Daniel,” I said quietly, “perhaps you should let her answer.””

He turned toward me.

“This has nothing to do with you.””

I raised an eyebrow.

“Really? Because the money trail begins with my company.””

His expression changed.

Vanessa looked between us.

“What money trail?””

I walked to the table and picked up the financial review.

“Daniel transferred company funds to Vantage Living LLC. That company was registered under your name.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He told me it was an investment.””

“Some of it was,” I replied.

“But the financial review shows that the money was then moved through two additional accounts.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Claire, stop.””

I ignored him.

“The last account belongs to a private holding company.””

Vanessa's father interrupted.

“What's the name of that company?””

I looked down at the report.

“Northbridge Capital.””

There was a long silence.

Then Mr. Collins spoke.

“Daniel, you told me Northbridge was an independent investment partner.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

“You know it?””

Mr. Collins answered.

“I invested $300,000 through that company last year. Daniel introduced me to its representatives.””

Vanessa turned toward her father.

“Dad, you invested in Daniel's company?””

“No. I invested in what he told me was a separate opportunity.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“The investment was legitimate.””

“Then why did you use Vanessa's company?”” I asked.

He glared at me.

“Because it was a tax-efficient structure.””

Marcus had left, but his financial documents remained on the table.

I picked up one page.

“According to these records, Northbridge received $240,000 from Vantage Living. The transfer happened three days after your father-in-law's investment.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Those numbers are incomplete.””

“Then complete them.””

He said nothing.

Vanessa slowly lowered herself into the chair.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “you told me my father was protected.””

He walked toward her.

“Listen to me. I can fix this.””

She backed away.

“Did you use my name to borrow money?””

“It's more complicated than that.””

“Did you?””

He looked at the floor.

That was answer enough.

Vanessa began crying again.

I had expected satisfaction when the truth finally came out.

Instead, I felt something colder.

Disappointment.

Not in Vanessa. Not even entirely in Daniel.

In myself.

I had spent eleven years believing I could recognize the man I married.

Apparently, I had only recognized the man he wanted me to see.

My phone vibrated.

A message from my attorney appeared.

*We found another company linked to the transfers. The registered director is Daniel's brother, Richard. Call me immediately.*

I read it twice.

Richard.

Daniel's younger brother.

The same man who had stood beside us at our wedding.

The same man who had asked me for money when his restaurant failed.

The same man Daniel had insisted was too irresponsible to manage even a small business account.

I looked up.

“Daniel, does your brother own a company called Whitmore Holdings?””

His head snapped toward me.

“Why are you asking?””

“Because your attorney apparently forgot to mention it.””

He moved closer.

“Give me your phone.””

“No.””

“Claire.””

I slipped the phone into my pocket.

“What's wrong, Daniel?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at the financial report.

Then toward the hallway.

For the first time, I saw something in his eyes that wasn't anger.

It was fear.

“Richard wasn't supposed to be involved,” he whispered.

Vanessa looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel didn't answer.

His phone rang again.

This time, it was his brother.

He stared at the screen for several seconds before answering.

“Richard, what did you do?””

A man's voice came through loudly enough for us to hear.

“Me? You're the one who signed everything.””

Daniel's face went rigid.

“Shut up.””

“Don't tell me to shut up. The bank is asking questions, and now Dad's lawyer is calling me.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Listen carefully. Nobody talks until I get there.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“It's too late.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What do you mean?””

Then his brother said six words that changed the entire evening.

“Dad knows who took the original money.””

The call ended.

Daniel stood motionless.

I looked at him.

“Original money?””

He slowly turned toward me.

May you like

And for the first time, he didn't have an explanation.

He had a confession waiting behind his teeth.
