Chapter 6: The Son Nobody Knew Existed

Vincent read the name aloud.

“Daniel.””

Elena's knees weakened.

She grabbed the staircase railing.

“Daniel?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

Victoria began sobbing.

Vincent looked between them.

“Who is Daniel?””

Nobody answered.

He raised his voice.

“WHO IS DANIEL?””

A quiet voice came from behind him.

“I'm Daniel.””

Vincent turned.

A young Black man stood at the entrance to the foyer.

He was in his early thirties, wearing a gray sweater and dark trousers. His short hair was neatly trimmed, and a small silver watch rested on his wrist.

Vincent recognized him immediately.

Daniel worked as the mansion's groundskeeper.

He had been part of the household for almost two years.

Vincent had spoken to him dozens of times.

They had discussed the garden, the security cameras, and the repairs to the east wing.

Daniel had once helped Vincent repair a broken gate during a storm.

But Vincent had never considered that the man might be connected to his family.

Daniel looked at the photograph in Vincent's hand.

“I wondered when you'd find that.””

Elena took a step toward him.

“Daniel?””

He nodded.

“Hello, Elena.””

She stared at him.

Then she looked at the photograph again.

“My mother...””

Daniel swallowed.

“She was my mother too.””

Elena's face crumpled.

“You're my brother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Half-brother.””

Vincent lowered the letter.

“Wait. You're telling me that Elena's mother had a child with my father?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

“I found out eighteen months ago.””

Vincent's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“Because he threatened my mother.””

Thomas laughed.

“Your mother is dead.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Exactly. And you still used her name to control me.””

Vincent turned toward Thomas.

“What did you do?””

Thomas adjusted his jacket.

“I made sure certain people stayed where they belonged.””

Daniel took a step forward.

“You told me that if I contacted Vincent, the foundation would disappear, the Morgan family would lose everything, and Elena would never be found.””

Elena covered her mouth.

“Daniel, you knew I was alive?””

“I suspected it. I didn't know where you were.””

She looked devastated.

“I thought I was alone.””

Daniel's voice softened.

“You weren't.””

For a moment, the two stood facing each other.

A brother and sister who had spent their lives unaware of the other's existence.

Vincent watched them.

His father's secrets were no longer confined to an old recording.

They were standing in his foyer.

Breathing.

Looking at one another.

And one of them had been tending his garden for two years.

“Everyone into the dining room,” Vincent ordered.

Thomas laughed.

“You're not giving orders here.””

Vincent turned toward him.

“This is my house.””

“Your house?””

Thomas looked around.

“Everything you own was built with money that belonged to the Morgan family.””

Vincent stepped closer.

“Then perhaps it's time the truth was put on paper.””

He picked up the letter.

“Daniel, do you have documents proving what you're saying?””

Daniel nodded.

“I have copies of the original birth certificate, a DNA report, and several letters from your father.””

“Where?””

“In my room.””

“Bring them.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Don't be foolish.””

Daniel ignored him and walked toward the service corridor.

Thomas moved to follow.

Vincent blocked his path.

“Stay.””

Thomas smiled.

“You really think you can stop me?””

“I don't have to.””

Vincent looked toward the security camera above the entrance.

“Your face is already recorded.””

Thomas glanced upward.

For the first time, he looked genuinely annoyed.

“You've become just like your father.””

Vincent answered without hesitation.

“That's the last thing I want to be.””

Twenty minutes later, Daniel returned with a small black folder.

He placed it on the dining table.

Vincent opened it.

The first document was a birth certificate.

Mother: Eleanor Morgan.

Father: Richard Sterling.

Child: Daniel Morgan.

The second was a DNA report.

The third was a handwritten letter from Vincent's father.

Vincent recognized the signature immediately.

Daniel,

I have failed you in ways I cannot repair. I was young when your mother became pregnant, and I allowed my family to convince me that acknowledging you would destroy everything I had built.

I sent money. I watched from a distance. I told myself that was enough.

It wasn't.

Your sister Elena has inherited the rights to the Morgan trust. When she is old enough to understand, tell her what happened.

I hope one day both of you will forgive me.

Vincent stopped reading.

He looked at Daniel.

“Why did you come here?””

Daniel sat down.

“To find out whether the letter was real.””

“And?””

“I found out that Victoria already knew.””

Vincent turned toward his wife.

Victoria was standing near the window.

“Explain.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“I knew about Daniel.””

“When?””

“Before we married.””

Vincent stared.

“How?””

“Thomas told me.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was trying to protect your father's reputation.””

Vincent laughed once, without humor.

“My father's reputation?””

Victoria looked down.

“Your father promised me control of the foundation if I helped him recover the Morgan documents.””

Elena stepped forward.

“So you agreed to destroy my life?””

Victoria looked at her.

“I didn't know the fire would happen.””

“You locked the back exit.””

“I was told you'd be moved before anything happened!””

“You left me there!””

Victoria's face twisted.

“I had a choice.””

Elena stared at her.

“You chose money.””

Victoria began crying harder.

Vincent pushed his chair away.

“Enough.””

He looked at Thomas.

“Why are you wearing my father's ring?””

Thomas lifted his hand.

“Because he gave it to me.””

“He gave you his family ring?””

“He gave me the inheritance he couldn't put in his will.””

Vincent frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas opened his briefcase and removed a folded legal document.

He placed it on the table.

“Your father signed a private agreement six months before he died. It gave me authority over the foundation if the Morgan trust was ever recovered.””

Vincent examined the document.

The signature looked authentic.

But something was wrong.

He studied the date.

Then the witness section.

One name stood out.

“Eleanor Morgan.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“My mother was dead by then.””

Thomas said nothing.

Vincent looked at the signature again.

“Who witnessed this?””

Thomas closed the briefcase.

“People who are no longer around.””

Vincent's voice hardened.

“You forged this.””

Thomas smiled.

“Prove it.””

Before Vincent could answer, Elena suddenly gasped.

She was staring at the bottom of the document.

There was a small handwritten note in the margin.

A note in her grandmother's handwriting.

She recognized it immediately.

“Vincent.””

He looked up.

“What?””

Elena pointed.

“My grandmother wrote that.””

Vincent leaned closer.

The note read:

This agreement is invalid. Richard already signed the original transfer.

Daniel pulled another document from the folder.

“That's what I've been trying to show you.””

He unfolded it.

It was a property and trust transfer dated seven years earlier.

It gave Elena and Daniel equal ownership of the Morgan family assets.

But there was something else.

A clause stating that the Sterling foundation would become independent of Thomas and Vincent's father's estate.

Thomas snatched the paper.

Vincent grabbed his wrist.

“Put it down.””

Thomas's eyes flashed.

“You don't know what you're holding.””

“I know it's evidence.””

Thomas slowly released the document.

Then he looked at Victoria.

“You told me the original had been destroyed.””

Victoria's face went blank.

Vincent turned.

“What original?””

Thomas stared at her.

“The original transfer document.””

Victoria took a step backward.

“Thomas...””

He pointed at her.

“You told me you burned it.””

Elena looked at Victoria.

“Where is it?””

Victoria shook her head.

“I don't have it.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“You've been lying to me too?””

For a moment, Vincent thought Thomas might attack her.

Instead, Thomas picked up his briefcase and headed toward the front entrance.

Vincent followed.

“Where do you think you're going?””

Thomas stopped at the doorway.

“You should be careful, Vincent.””

“Is that a threat?””

“It's advice.””

Thomas looked toward Elena.

“Ask your wife what happened to the original transfer document.””

Then he looked at Daniel.

“And ask your brother why he really came here.””

He opened the door.

Before stepping outside, he turned one last time.

“Oh, and Vincent?””

“What?””

Thomas smiled.

“Your father didn't leave you the mansion.””

The door closed.

Vincent stood motionless.

Daniel slowly lowered his eyes.

Elena looked at the documents scattered across the table.

Then Victoria spoke.

“He's right.””

Vincent turned.

“What?””

Victoria's voice was barely audible.

“Your father transferred the mansion to someone else before he died.””

Vincent felt the blood drain from his face.

“Who?””

Victoria looked toward the staircase.

“Grace.””

Nobody moved.

From the hallway came the sound of a glass breaking.

Grace stood at the doorway, one hand pressed against her pregnant belly.

Her other hand held an old photograph.

She looked directly at Vincent.

Then she whispered:

“There's something else you should know about my mother.””

She placed the photograph on the table.

It showed Grace as a little girl standing beside an elderly woman.

The woman was Eleanor Morgan.

Daniel's mother.

Elena's mother.

And beneath the photograph, in Vincent's father's unmistakable handwriting, were seven words:

The rightful heir is carrying my final secret.

Vincent slowly looked at Grace's pregnant belly.

Then at the photograph.

“Grace,” he whispered, “who is the father of your baby?””

May you like

Grace began to cry.

And Victoria, standing behind them, finally understood that the secret she had spent three years protecting was about to destroy everything.
