Chapter 4: The Promise That Changed Everything

"Your mother and Evelyn made a promise that involved you.""

Robert's words hung in the kitchen.

Daniel stood motionless, one hand gripping the edge of the counter. His khaki shirt was slightly wrinkled, and his face had gone pale.

I held Lily close to my side.

Margaret sat in the chair where she had opened her birthday presents. Her expensive pearl earrings caught the kitchen light, but her hands were shaking so badly that she had to press them against her knees.

Daniel looked at his father.

"Explain what you mean.""

Robert glanced at Margaret.

"Not everything can be explained in one sentence.""

"Then use ten.""

"Daniel...""

"No, Dad. You've both been acting like I'm a child who needs to be protected from something. I'm thirty-five years old.

I'm married. I have a daughter. I deserve to know what happened before I was born.""

Margaret stood.

"Your father is making this sound much worse than it was.""

Robert shook his head.

"I'm not making anything sound like anything. I'm finally telling the truth.""

"After all these years?"" Margaret snapped.

"You choose my birthday?""

Robert looked at the untouched cake.

"You chose the moment when you threw Claire's mother's work into the trash.""

Margaret's face twisted.

"That apron has nothing to do with this.""

"Then why are you frightened of it?""

She looked away.

I slowly placed the handwritten note on the counter.

"Can someone please tell me what my mother had to do with my husband's birth?""

Robert pulled out a chair.

"Claire, your mother was one of the most important people in our lives. She wasn't just Margaret's sewing teacher. She was our closest friend.""

"Then why have I never heard her name mentioned in this house?""

Margaret answered quickly.

"Because some friendships end.""

"That doesn't explain why you lied about knowing her.""

She pressed her lips together.

Robert opened the photograph again.

"Margaret and I were engaged when we met Evelyn. We were both young. I was working at a printing company, and Margaret was taking sewing classes at the community center.""

He pointed to the young woman standing beside Margaret.

"Your mother was the instructor.""

I looked at the photograph.

My mother looked so young.

Her dark hair fell over her shoulders, and she was smiling directly at the camera.

I had seen that smile in hundreds of family photographs.

Robert continued.

"Evelyn was generous. She let us use her workshop when we couldn't afford a proper place for our wedding preparations. Margaret made her own dress there.""

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"She was a wonderful person," Robert said.

"And she wanted everyone around her to succeed.""

Daniel looked at his mother.

"Then what happened?""

Robert hesitated.

Margaret answered.

"I became pregnant.""

The words were quiet.

Daniel blinked.

"What?""

"Before your father and I got married, I became pregnant.""

Robert nodded.

"That was when everything became complicated.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Complicated how?""

Margaret rubbed her forehead.

"My parents were very strict. They cared about appearances. They would never have accepted an unmarried daughter having a child.""

Robert took a breath.

"They wanted us to marry immediately.""

"And you refused?"" Daniel asked.

"No. I wanted to marry your mother.""

"Then what was the problem?""

Robert looked at Margaret.

"She wasn't sure she wanted to.""

Margaret's head snapped up.

"That's not fair.""

"It's what happened.""

She stood and began pacing beside the kitchen island.

"I was twenty-two, Robert. I had plans. I wanted to study design.

I wanted to travel. I wasn't ready to become a wife and mother.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Then why did you marry Dad?""

"Because I thought I had to.""

Robert's voice softened.

"And Evelyn was the only person who listened to both of us without judging.""

I looked at the note.

So you never forget what we promised each other.

"What did my mother promise you?"" I asked.

Margaret stopped pacing.

She looked at me for a long moment.

"She promised she would help me.""

"Help you with what?""

Margaret's mouth opened, but no words came.

Robert answered.

"With the baby.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?""

"It means Evelyn helped your mother through the pregnancy. She stayed with her when I was working late. She took her to appointments. She helped prepare the nursery.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That sounds like friendship. Why would you need to hide it?""

Robert looked at Margaret.

"Because there was another man.""

The kitchen became silent.

Patricia, who had been standing near the doorway, slowly covered her mouth.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Daniel looked confused.

"What other man?""

Robert leaned forward.

"Before your mother and I became serious, Margaret had been seeing someone else.""

"Who?""

Margaret's voice was barely audible.

"His name was Thomas.""

I felt something shift inside me.

The name sounded familiar.

Not because I knew him.

Because I had seen it before.

On an old envelope in my mother's sewing box.

I remembered the handwriting.

Thomas. Please come home.

I looked at Margaret.

"Thomas?""

Her face changed.

"How do you know that name?""

"I don't. I've just seen it.""

"Where?""

"In my mother's things.""

Margaret gripped the back of her chair.

"That's impossible.""

Robert turned toward her.

"Margaret, you need to stop.""

She shook her head.

"No. You don't understand.""

Daniel looked between them.

"Who was Thomas?""

Robert answered.

"He was the man Margaret loved before she married me.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"And was he my father?""

Margaret stared at him.

"No.""

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

"Then why are you looking at me like that?""

She sat down.

"Thomas left before you were born.""

"Why?""

"Because he didn't want the responsibility.""

Robert looked toward the window.

"That's what we were told.""

Margaret turned sharply.

"Robert!""

Daniel's eyes widened.

"What do you mean, that's what we were told?""

Robert didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he picked up the old photograph.

"There's something else.""

He turned it over.

The handwritten words were still visible.

To the three people who knew the truth.

Beneath them was a smaller line.

May 14, 1994.

Robert placed the photograph beside the note.

"The date is the day Margaret and Evelyn made their agreement.""

I stared at the paper.

"What agreement?""

Margaret's eyes filled.

"To never speak about Thomas again.""

Daniel looked at his mother.

"Why would my birth depend on that?""

She covered her face.

Robert slowly stood.

"Because Thomas didn't simply leave.""

He looked at Margaret.

"He disappeared after discovering something about the pregnancy.""

Margaret began crying.

"Please don't.""

Robert's voice became quieter.

"He came to the house that night. He wanted answers. Evelyn was there. I was there.""

Daniel looked stunned.

"What happened?""

Robert swallowed.

"Your mother told him he had no place in your life.""

"And?""

"He left.""

"Was he ever found?""

"No.""

Daniel stared at his father.

"Then why did you tell me he died?""

Robert's face changed.

Margaret stopped crying.

I felt my stomach drop.

"What?"" I whispered.

Daniel stepped closer.

"You told me Thomas died in a car accident before I was born.""

Robert looked at him.

"I told you what your mother wanted you to believe.""

Margaret suddenly rose.

"That's enough!""

She knocked a champagne flute from the counter.

It shattered on the floor.

Lily jumped.

I immediately pulled her into my arms.

Daniel didn't move.

He simply stared at his mother.

"Mom, what did you do?""

Margaret looked at him.

Her lips trembled.

Then she said something none of us expected.

"I didn't know whether Thomas was your father.""

Robert closed his eyes.

And in that moment, I understood why my mother had kept that old photograph hidden.

The promise wasn't about friendship.

It was about a child.

A child who had grown up believing he knew exactly who his father was.

Daniel slowly turned toward Robert.

"Then whose son am I?""

Before Robert could answer, the front doorbell rang.

Everyone turned.

Patricia looked toward the hallway.

"Who would that be?""

Margaret's face went completely white.

Robert whispered one name.

May you like

"Thomas.""

And someone knocked again.
