Chapter 9: The Man Who Had Been Standing Beside My Father
Dad didn't speak for almost a minute.
He kept staring at Richard Coleman's signature.
Richard had been his best friend since college. They had built a successful construction company together, attended each other's weddings, celebrated birthdays, and spent holidays with both families.
He was practically an uncle to me.
He had even carried me on his shoulders at my eighth birthday party.
And now his signature was sitting beside Patricia's on a suspicious bank authorization.
“Michael,” Dad finally said, “I need you to explain this carefully.””
Michael nodded.
“Richard managed several business accounts for your family. He was also given temporary authorization to assist with certain financial matters during Claire's illness.””
“Why?””
“Because Claire was receiving treatment and needed help managing paperwork.””
Dad shook his head.
“I approved that arrangement. I trusted him.””
Michael looked down.
“Claire trusted him too. Initially.””
Arthur examined the document.
“ Patricia's on a suspicious bank authorization.

Arthur examined the document.
“Was this authorization ever used?””
Michael opened another folder.
“Yes. There were three attempted transfers.””
Dad leaned forward.
“How much?””
“The first was seventy-five thousand dollars. The second was ninety thousand. The third was one hundred and twenty thousand.””
I stared.
“That's almost three hundred thousand dollars.””
Michael nodded.
“The first two transfers were stopped because Claire had placed additional verification requirements on the account. The third was partially completed before the bank flagged it.””

Dad's face turned pale.
“How much actually left?””
“Forty thousand dollars.””
The room fell silent.
Dad slowly sat down.
“Forty thousand?””
“Yes.””
“Where did it go?””
Michael slid another statement across the desk.
“The transfer went to a company registered under a different name.””
Arthur studied the document.
“Who owns it?””
Michael pointed to the registration details.
“Richard Coleman.””
Dad stood.
He walked to the window and pressed both hands against the frame pale.

“I trusted that man with my company.””
Nobody interrupted him.
After a while, he turned around.
“Why didn't Claire tell me?””
Michael looked at him.
“She tried.””
Dad frowned.
“What?””
“Three days before she died, Claire called you. You were in a business meeting with Richard. She asked you to come home because she had something urgent to discuss.””
Dad stared.
“I remember that call.””
“You told her you'd be home later.

Michael nodded.
“But Claire was admitted to the hospital that afternoon. She never got the chance to finish the conversation.””
Dad covered his mouth.
I reached for his hand.
He held it tightly.
“I should have gone home.””
Arthur spoke gently.
“You can't change what happened, Daniel.””
Dad looked at the documents again.
“But I can find out what they did.””
Michael nodded.
“That's why Claire left copies with me.””

He reached into the folder and removed a small USB drive.
“This contains scanned records, emails, and correspondence from the period. I was instructed to release it only if someone challenged Lily's inheritance or attempted to manipulate the trust.””
Arthur took the drive.
“We'll make secure copies and review everything.””
Dad looked at Michael.
“Was Richard involved with Vanessa before my wedding?””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“According to the correspondence, they were in contact before Claire died.””
Dad closed his reached into the folder and removed a small USB drive.

Dad closed his eyes.
For a moment, I thought he might shout.
Instead, he whispered:
“They were all sitting at my wedding.””
I remembered Richard standing beside Dad in his wedding photographs.
Vanessa had been wearing a white gown.
Patricia had been smiling.
Everyone had congratulated them.
And I had stood beside my father, trying to smile because I thought I was supposed to be happy.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
“Did Mom know Richard was involved?””
Michael hesitated.

“Claire suspected it. She never received confirmation before she died.””
I looked at the USB drive.
“So she left all this for me?””
“She left it so the truth could be established if necessary.””
Dad took a deep breath.
“We're going home.””
Arthur agreed to arrange an independent forensic review of the records. Michael also promised to provide a signed statement confirming what he had witnessed.

Before we left, he handed me a small photograph.
It showed Mom sitting in his office, smiling gently.
On the back she had written:
Thank you for keeping your promise. Lily deserves a future without fear.
I held it against my chest.
For the first time in years, I felt as though Mom was still protecting me.

Eventually, he pulled into a service station.
“I need to make a call.””
He stepped outside.
I watched through the windshield as he dialed.
A moment later, Richard answered.
Dad put the phone on speaker.
“Richard.””
“Daniel! My man. How are you?””
Dad.

Dad's expression didn't change.
“We need to talk.””
“Sure. Everything okay?””
“Did you ever authorize transfers from Claire's estate account?””
There was a pause.
Then's expression didn't change.

There was a pause.
Then Richard laughed.
“Where is this coming from?””
“Answer the question.””
“Daniel, that was years ago. I was helping with administrative matters.””
“Forty thousand dollars went to a company registered in your name.””
Silence.
Then Richard said:
“You've been talking to Michael Reed.””
Dad's jaw tightened.
“So you admit it?””
“I'm saying Michael doesn't understand the whole arrangement.””
“What arrangement?””
“Look, Patricia had debts. Vanessa was trying to help. It was complicated.””
Dad stared straight ahead.
“You took money from my daughter's account.””
“I borrowed it.””
“Without permission.””
“I intended to return it.””
“When?””
Richard sighed.
“Daniel, don't destroy a thirty-year friendship over something that can be sorted out.””
Dad's voice became colder.
“You already Richard laughed.

Dad's voice became colder.
“You already destroyed it.””
He ended the call.
I looked at him.
“Did he admit it?””
Dad nodded.
“Enough for now.””
We drove home.
When we arrived, Grandma was waiting in the living room with Arthur's assistant. She had prepared tea and sandwiches, but nobody seemed interested in eating.
“Did you find out anything?”” she asked.
Dad placed the documents on the table.
“Richard was involved.””
Grandma sat down.
“Oh, Daniel.””
Dad explained everything.
When he finished, she looked toward the window.
“Claire was destroyed it.””
He ended the call.

“Claire was right,” she whispered.
I sat beside her.
“Grandma, what was the name on the paper Michael showed us?””
She looked at me.
“What paper?””
“The one with the date Mom died.””
Grandma's expression changed.
Arthur removed the document from his folder.
“There's a separate beneficiary designation. Michael said Claire left this as her final instruction.””
He placed it in front of us.
At the top was a name:

Dad frowned.
“Who is Elizabeth?””
Grandma's eyes filled with tears.
“My sister.””
I looked at her.
“Your sister?””
She nodded slowly.
“Your great-aunt Elizabeth. Claire's closest friend.””
Dad seemed confused.
“But Elizabeth died before Claire.””
Grandma shook her head.
“No. She didn't.””
Everyone stared at her.
“What do you mean?”” Dad asked.
Margaret took a trembling breath.

Margaret took a trembling breath.
“Elizabeth moved overseas years ago. Claire stayed in contact with her, but the family rarely discussed her because of an argument between her and Patricia.””
“What argument?”” I asked.
Grandma looked at me.
“Elizabeth discovered that Patricia had been using family funds without permission. She confronted her, and Patricia accused her of stealing.””
Dad leaned forward.
“Why didn't I know about this?””

“Because Patricia convinced everyone Elizabeth was unstable and dishonest. She cut off contact with the family.””
Arthur examined the document.
“According to this, Elizabeth was named as a secondary protector of the trust.””
Grandma nodded.
“Claire trusted her completely.””
Dad stared at the date.
“October nineteenth. That's the day Claire died.””

Arthur studied the document.

Dad looked at Grandma.
“Where is Elizabeth now?””
Margaret wiped her eyes.
“I don't know. But Claire knew.””
She opened her handbag and removed a folded piece of paper.
“This was delivered to me two days after Claire's funeral. I never opened it because Claire asked me to keep it until the right moment.””
She handed it to Arthur.
He unfolded it.
Inside was a handwritten address.

Grandma looked devastated.
“Because I was afraid. Patricia was my daughter. I wanted to believe she had made mistakes, not become someone capable of destroying another person's life.””
I looked at the address.
It was in London.
And suddenly, I understood why Mom had left a second protector.

Someone Patricia couldn't easily manipulate.
Dad picked up his phone.
“We're contacting her.””
Before he could dial, the front door opened.
Vanessa walked inside.
She was wearing sunglasses despite the cloudy afternoon. Her handbag hung from one shoulder, and her face was unusually pale.
She looked at the documents on the table.
Then at Dad.

Vanessa took off her sunglasses.
“Daniel, I need you to listen to me.””
“I've listened for four years.””
She glanced at Arthur.
“Can we speak privately?””
“No.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“Lily, could you give us a moment?””
I stayed seated.
Dad answered for me.
“She stays.””
Vanessa looked furious.
Then she noticed the address in Arthur's hand.

She looked at him.
“You don't understand. Elizabeth has no right to interfere.””
Grandma stood.
“Neither do you.””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“Margaret, please. You have no idea what happened between Elizabeth and Patricia.””
Grandma's voice trembled.

Vanessa looked at the documents.

Then she said:
“Elizabeth wasn't protecting Claire. She was blackmailing her.””
Dad stared.
“What?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Your wife was being threatened. That's why she created the trust. That's why she left all those strange instructions.””
Arthur immediately interrupted.
“That's a serious allegation. Do you have evidence?””
Vanessa opened her handbag.
She removed a folded document and placed it on the table.
“I have something better.””
Dad picked it up.
It was a letter bearing my mother's signature.
The date was.

It was a letter bearing my mother's signature.
The date was October eighteenth.
The day before she died.
At the top were the words:
I no longer trust Elizabeth Bennett.
Dad read the first paragraph.
His face changed.
Then he looked at Grandma.
“Mom, did you know about this?””
Margaret stared at the letter.
“No.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Now perhaps you'll understand why I've been trying to protect this family.””
Dad looked at the signature again.
Arthur took the paper and examined October eighteenth.

Arthur took the paper and examined it.
Then he noticed something.
A detail so small that none of us had seen it before.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Where did you get this?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“From the person who was there when Claire signed it.””
Arthur turned the page over.
His expression hardened.
“Daniel,” he said quietly, “this letter has a serious problem.””
Dad looked at it.

Arthur pointed to the date.
Then he pointed to the medical record attached to the back.
“Claire was unconscious at the hospital on October eighteenth. She couldn't have signed this document.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
And just as Dad demanded an explanation, her phone rang.
The name on the screen was visible to everyone.

Vanessa stared at it.
She didn't answer.

This time, the name was:

And Arthur had just discovered that the letter she had brought into our home might be forged.
