Chapter 6: The Letter Rachel Left Behind
The silence that followed Denise's confession was almost unbearable.
Lily was sitting on the bed, holding her stuffed rabbit.
She looked from Denise to me.
“Daddy?””
I turned toward her.
“It's okay, sweetheart.””
Denise stepped into the room.
“Anthony, I can explain.””
I placed the photograph inside my pocket.
“Then explain.””
She closed the bedroom door.
“Not in front of Lily.””
I stared at her.
“You've been doing plenty of things in front of Lily. Why stop now?””
Her face tightened.
“I made mistakes.””
“You made my daughter afraid to ask for dinner.””
“I was trying to maintain order.””
“You told her I didn't want her.””
Denise looked away.
For a moment, she seemed to struggle with her answer.
Then she said something I hadn't expected.
“Robert paid me.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He gave Marcus money. He gave me money. We were supposed to help him establish contact with Lily.””
I felt my hands curl into fists.
“By humiliating her?””
“No. That wasn't the arrangement.””
“Then what was?””
Denise lowered her voice.
“Robert wanted photographs. He wanted evidence that Lily wasn't being properly cared for.””
I looked at the photograph in my pocket.
“You staged those pictures?””
She nodded faintly.
“And the food?””
Her eyes filled.
“I didn't think you would come home early.””
I took a step toward her.
“You made a child sit on the floor because you didn't want me to discover what you were doing?””
Denise wiped her cheek.
“I thought it would be temporary.””
“Temporary?””
“Anthony, listen to me. Robert promised that once the guardianship matter was settled, he would give us enough money to start over.””
I stared at her.
“You were going to help him take my daughter for money?””
She didn't answer.
The answer was already there.
Behind us, Lily climbed off the bed.
She walked toward Denise.
I immediately moved between them.
“Stay with Daddy, sweetheart.””
Lily stopped.
Then she looked at Denise.
“Did you make me eat in the hallway because you wanted money?””
Denise opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Lily's lower lip trembled.
“Did you tell Daddy I was bad because you wanted him to send me away?””
Denise reached out.
“Lily, honey—”
I stepped forward.
“Don't.””
Lily backed away.
I knelt and held her hand.
“Let's go downstairs.””
We left Denise standing in the bedroom.
In the living room, I helped Lily settle onto the couch with her rabbit and a blanket.
Then I called Michelle.
“I'm opening the door.””
She was standing on the porch.
Her dark coat was buttoned to the neck, and her eyes were red.
When she saw me, she immediately looked past my shoulder.
“Where's Lily?””
“Inside.””
She entered.
The moment Lily saw her aunt, she ran forward.
“Aunt Michelle!””
Michelle dropped her handbag and wrapped both arms around her.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
Lily buried her face against Michelle's shoulder.
“Daddy said I can stay with him.””
Michelle looked at me.
Her expression broke.
“Of course you can.””
I watched them hug.
For the first time that evening, Lily seemed to relax.
Michelle sat beside her and gently brushed her hair.
“Did you eat Thanksgiving dinner?””
Lily nodded.
“Daddy made me a plate.””
“Good.””
Then Lily whispered:
“Grandma said I wasn't allowed to sit with everybody.””
Michelle closed her eyes.
“Oh, baby.””
She kissed Lily's forehead.
“You should never have been treated that way.””
I went into the kitchen with Michelle's handbag.
She followed me a moment later.
“Did you find Rachel's letter?””
“I found a note and a photograph.””
Michelle nodded.
“I brought the original.””
She opened her handbag and removed a large cream-colored envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Rachel's handwriting.
I recognized every curve.
My chest tightened.
“Where did you get this?””
“Rachel gave it to me six months before she died. She made me promise not to open it unless I believed Lily was in danger.””
I stared at the envelope.
“Why didn't you give it to me sooner?””
Michelle looked down.
“Because Denise told me you had already seen it.””
“What?””
“She said you knew about the trust and had agreed that Robert could manage everything.””
I shook my head.
“I never agreed to anything.””
“I know that now.””
She sat down.
“Anthony, Denise has been controlling information for a long time.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter, several legal documents, and a small USB drive.
The first page began:
My love,
If Michelle has given you this letter, something has happened that I was desperately hoping to prevent.
I had to stop reading.
Rachel's words were too familiar.
I could almost hear her voice.
I sat down.
Michelle placed a hand on my shoulder.
“Take your time.””
I continued.
I need you to understand that my father is not the man he pretends to be.
When I was young, he used money to control everyone around him. My mother stayed because she was afraid of losing everything. When I tried to leave, he threatened to make sure I never received another dollar.
I thought I had escaped him when I married you.
But after Lily was born, he returned.
I swallowed.
The next paragraph was underlined.
He does not want to be Lily's grandfather. He wants control of the trust.
I looked up.
Michelle nodded.
I continued.
My grandmother established the trust because she knew my father would eventually try to control the family inheritance. The money belongs to Lily. It cannot be withdrawn for anyone's personal benefit.
Robert has already tried to challenge the trust. He failed.
Now he wants to establish legal guardianship so he can influence the trustee.
My hands began shaking.
The letter continued.
Anthony, there is something I haven't told you.
I stopped.
Michelle looked at me.
“What?””
I read the next sentence aloud.
“Robert was involved in the circumstances surrounding my mother's death.””
Michelle went completely still.
“What does that mean?””
I looked at her.
“I don't know.””
I continued reading.
I cannot prove what happened. But I found documents showing that he pressured her to change her will shortly before she died. When she refused, he threatened to have her declared mentally incompetent.
I discovered this because he accidentally sent me a copy of an email.
I looked toward the USB drive.
“Is everything on here?””
Michelle nodded.
“Rachel said it contained copies of the documents she found.””
I held the drive between my fingers.
Then I noticed another page.
A legal document with the title:
*Contingency Guardianship Agreement.*
I scanned the first paragraph.
It named Robert Hayes as the proposed guardian of Lily.
But beneath his name was another name.
Denise Mitchell.
I felt my stomach drop.
“Michelle.””
She leaned closer.
“What?””
I pointed to the document.
“Denise wasn't just helping Robert.””
Michelle read the page.
Her expression changed.
“She was supposed to become Lily's temporary guardian.””
I nodded.
“And Marcus?””
Michelle flipped the page.
His name appeared under the section titled Authorized Financial Representative.
We stared at the document.
Then Michelle whispered:
“They planned this before Rachel died.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“Anthony, look at the date.””
The document had been drafted two months before Rachel passed away.
My mind struggled to process it.
Two months.
Rachel had been alive.
Lily had been a toddler.
And these people had already been planning how to take control of her future.
I stood abruptly.
“I need to call the police.””
Michelle grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
“Why?””
“Because we need to know what Robert has already filed.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
She took out her phone.
“I spoke to a family attorney this morning. He found something in the county court records.””
“What?””
Michelle hesitated.
“Robert has already filed an emergency petition.””
My mouth went dry.
“For what?””
She turned her phone toward me.
The document displayed my name.
Anthony Mitchell.
The petitioner was Robert Hayes.
The requested relief was temporary guardianship of Lily Mitchell.
And the hearing date was the following morning.
I stared at the screen.
“They're trying to take her tomorrow?””
Michelle nodded.
“But there's something worse.””
She scrolled down.
A statement had been attached to the petition.
It claimed that Lily had been found living in unsafe conditions.
It claimed I regularly left her unattended.
It claimed she was emotionally distressed and afraid of her father.
And the final paragraph stated that a responsible adult had offered to take immediate custody.
The responsible adult was Denise.
I looked toward the living room.
Lily was drawing quietly.
Then I looked at the document again.
“Who signed the witness statement?””
Michelle zoomed in.
The signature belonged to a neighbor.
Mrs. Eleanor Brooks.
An elderly woman who lived three houses away.
She had attended Lily's birthday party.
She had brought her a pink bicycle.
She had always called her sweetheart.
I couldn't believe it.
“Eleanor knows Lily.””
Michelle nodded.
“That's why I don't think she signed this voluntarily.””
My phone rang.
The caller ID displayed an unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through.
“Mr. Mitchell. My name is Robert Hayes.””
I looked at Michelle.
She shook her head urgently.
“I'm calling because I believe we need to resolve a family matter before tomorrow's hearing.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“You mean the hearing where you're trying to take my daughter?””
There was a quiet chuckle.
“Anthony, I understand you're upset.””
“Stay away from Lily.””
“That's not a reasonable request. I'm her grandfather.””
“You haven't acted like one.””
His voice became colder.
“Your wife made some unfortunate decisions before she died. I'm trying to protect my granddaughter from repeating them.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“What did you do to Rachel?””
Silence.
Then Robert said:
“You should be careful what you accuse people of.””
I looked at the USB drive.
“I'm going to find out everything.””
Robert sighed.
“Then perhaps you should also find out what your wife was hiding from you.””
My heart began pounding.
“What are you talking about?””
He lowered his voice.
“Rachel wasn't the only person who knew about the trust. She wasn't even the first person to access it.””
I looked at Michelle.
Robert continued.
“Ask your stepmother what happened to the original beneficiary documents.””
Then he hung up.
I stood motionless.
Michelle slowly lowered her phone.
“What did he say?””
I looked toward the staircase.
Then toward the kitchen.
Denise was no longer there.
I called her name.
No answer.
I checked the front hallway.
The door was open.
Her purple silk scarf was lying on the floor.
And beside it was a small piece of paper.
Three words were written across it.
*Find the original will.*
I picked it up.
Then I heard Lily calling from the living room.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
She was holding a photograph.
A photograph I hadn't seen before.
It showed Rachel standing beside Denise.
They were both smiling.
But someone had written a date on the back.
The date was three days before Rachel died.
May you like
And beneath it, in Rachel's handwriting, were the words:
I know what you did.
