Chapter 5: The $2 Million Secret
Diane didn't look like a woman who had lost control.
She looked like a woman who had realized she was about to lose everything.
Her eyes remained fixed on the USB drive.
"Give that to me, Nia.""
I tightened my grip.
"No.""
"That belongs to the family.""
"It belonged to my mother.""
Diane took a step forward.
Richard moved between us.
"Don't come any closer.""
She stared at him.
"Richard, you need to listen to me.""
"I've been listening to you for seven years.""
"You don't understand what those documents contain.""
"Then explain.""
Diane looked toward Ava.
My sister stood near the staircase, holding her phone against her chest.
"Mom," Ava whispered.
Diane ignored her.
"Your mother was sick. She wasn't thinking clearly. She made decisions that could have destroyed everything.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"She was perfectly capable of managing her affairs.""
"She was paranoid!""
"She was your family.""
Diane laughed bitterly.
"She never accepted me. Even after all those years, she treated me like an outsider.""
I stared at her.
"My mother was dead before you married Dad.""
Diane turned sharply.
"You have no idea what it was like coming into this family.""
I almost laughed.
Coming into this family?
She'd had a mansion, a husband with a successful business, private vacations, and access to everything she wanted.
Meanwhile, I'd spent years feeling like a guest in the home where I'd grown up.
But I didn't argue.
I simply held up the USB drive.
"What's on this?""
Diane's face changed.
"Nothing that concerns you.""
Richard stepped closer.
"Then why are you so desperate to get it?""
She opened her mouth.
No answer came.
Ava finally spoke.
"Mom, just tell them.""
Diane turned toward her.
"Be quiet.""
Ava swallowed.
"You said Dad already knew.""
Richard looked at her.
"Knew what?""
Ava's eyes filled.
She looked at Diane.
Then at me.
"I didn't know it was stolen.""
My heart dropped.
"Didn't know what was stolen?""
Ava began crying.
"Mom said the money was from an investment account. She told me Dad approved it.""
Richard's face became unreadable.
"How much money did you receive?""
Ava shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Try.""
"Maybe... two hundred thousand.""
I looked at her.
"Two hundred thousand dollars?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"It wasn't all at once.""
Richard stepped back.
"Where is it?""
Ava looked at the floor.
"Some went toward my apartment. Some went toward my car. Some was invested.""
I felt sick.
"Was the Mercedes I just got back part of that money?""
Ava nodded slowly.
I stared at her.
"You knew about the car?""
She didn't answer.
"Did you know Mom sold it?""
"Yes.""
The room became silent.
I had expected Diane to lie.
I had expected excuses.
But hearing Ava admit it hurt differently.
"Why didn't you stop her?""
Ava's eyes filled further.
"Because I thought she was right.""
I shook my head.
"Right about what?""
"That you didn't need it. That Dad would buy you another one. That you always got special treatment.""
I stared at her.
"You thought taking my car was fair because you believed I had too much?""
Ava looked away.
Diane stepped forward.
"That's enough. Ava, go upstairs.""
"No, Mom!""
For the first time, Ava refused.
She turned toward Richard.
"There's something else.""
Diane grabbed her arm.
"Don't.""
Ava pulled away.
"Stop telling me what to do!""
Richard's voice was low.
"Let her speak.""
Ava took a shaky breath.
"Mom told me the company shares were supposed to be transferred to me.""
I felt the room tilt.
Richard stared at her.
"What?""
"She said your mother had changed the documents. She said if you found out, you'd make Nia the majority owner and she'd never let me have anything.""
Richard looked at Diane.
"Did you tell her that?""
Diane's lips pressed together.
"I was protecting my daughter.""
"From what?""
"From being left with nothing!""
Richard stared at her.
"She already has a home. She has a family. She has everything she needs.""
Diane laughed.
"Not anymore. Not if Nia gets control.""
I looked at her.
"Why do you care who controls the company?""
Her expression sharpened.
"Because I helped build the life you enjoy.""
Richard shook his head.
"You didn't build Hayes Global.""
"I supported you!""
"With money from Elena's trust?""
Diane flinched.
That was the first time she looked truly cornered.
Richard took out his phone.
"I'm calling Thomas.""
"No!"" Diane shouted.
He ignored her.
"Thomas, come to the house. Bring the forensic accountant. We need to secure the study and the original documents.""
Diane lunged toward him.
Richard stepped away.
"Don't touch me.""
She stopped.
Then her expression changed again.
Suddenly, she was crying.
"Richard, please. Don't do this.""
He looked at her.
"Do what?""
"Destroy our marriage over paperwork.""
I watched her face.
The same woman who had told me I didn't deserve my own car was now begging my father not to destroy their marriage.
Richard looked exhausted.
"Elena's money was taken. Nia's property was sold. Company records were altered. And you want to call this paperwork?""
Diane wiped her cheeks.
"I can fix it.""
"You had years to fix it.""
"Then let me explain.""
"Seven years, Diane.""
She looked toward Ava.
"Tell him.""
Ava shook her head.
"Mom, stop.""
Diane's voice rose.
"Tell him what we agreed!""
Richard froze.
"What agreement?""
Ava looked horrified.
Diane covered her mouth.
For a few seconds, no one moved.
Then Richard asked quietly:
"What did you agree to?""
Ava began shaking.
"Mom said that when Nia turned twenty-five, she'd have to sign something. A document giving up her voting rights.""
I looked at my father.
"What document?""
Richard turned toward Diane.
"Did you prepare a transfer agreement?""
Diane said nothing.
Ava continued.
"She said Nia wouldn't understand the company. She said she'd be happier with money than responsibility.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Did you expect me to sign away my inheritance?""
Diane's face hardened.
"You would have been doing the sensible thing.""
"By giving you control?""
"By allowing someone experienced to manage it!""
Richard laughed without humor.
"Experienced at what? Forging signatures?""
Diane slapped him.
The sound cracked through the hallway.
Ava gasped.
Richard didn't move.
He slowly touched his cheek.
Then he looked at Diane.
"Get out of my way.""
He walked toward the front door.
Diane followed him.
"Richard!""
He stopped beside the staircase.
"Thomas is coming. Nobody touches those documents. Nobody removes anything from this house.""
Diane folded her arms.
"You can't control me.""
Richard looked at her.
"Watch me.""
Twenty minutes later, Thomas arrived with a forensic accountant named Daniel Foster.
Daniel carried a laptop and a briefcase.
He examined the USB drive, checked the study, and photographed the documents.
Thomas looked through the papers my mother had left.
Then he stopped at one particular page.
His face turned pale.
"Richard.""
"What?""
Thomas held up the document.
"Elena's final amendment.""
Richard took it.
"What am I looking at?""
Thomas pointed to the bottom.
"She didn't just protect Nia's forty percent. She included a provision that gives Nia controlling voting authority over the family shares until the original financial investigation is resolved.""
I stared.
"So I control the company?""
"Under the terms of this amendment, yes.""
Diane, who had been standing near the doorway, suddenly laughed.
"That's impossible.""
Thomas looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because that amendment was never filed.""
Thomas turned another page.
"It was properly executed and witnessed. The original was lodged with the independent trustee.""
Richard frowned.
"Then why wasn't it disclosed?""
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
"Because someone submitted a competing document claiming Elena had revoked the amendment.""
I looked at him.
"Who submitted it?""
Thomas lowered the paper.
"Diane.""
The room went silent.
Diane shook her head.
"That's a lie.""
Daniel, the forensic accountant, looked up from his laptop.
"Actually, there's another problem.""
Richard turned.
"What now?""
Daniel rotated the screen.
"These records show that approximately $2 million was transferred out of Hayes Global over the past three years.""
Richard stared at him.
"Two million?""
Daniel nodded.
"Not all of it went into personal accounts. Some went through shell companies.""
Thomas leaned forward.
"Do we have the names?""
Daniel clicked through several files.
"Yes. Three companies.""
He displayed them on the screen.
One was registered to a business address in another state.
Another had no employees.
The third was listed as a consulting company.
I looked at the names.
Then one caught my attention.
*D.H. Strategic Holdings.*
Diane Hayes.
I turned toward her.
"That's yours?""
She said nothing.
Richard stepped toward the screen.
"Who authorized those transfers?""
Daniel opened the transaction history.
"Several approvals came from a company executive.""
"Which executive?""
Daniel clicked another tab.
A name appeared.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at my father.
Because the person listed as the final approver wasn't Diane.
It wasn't Ava.
It wasn't Thomas.
It was my father's closest business partner.
*Martin Cole.*
Richard slowly sat down.
"Martin?""
Thomas nodded grimly.
"Your mother was investigating him.""
I looked at the recording device on the table.
Suddenly, my mother's words made sense.
The person responsible was still inside the company.
Richard took out his phone.
"I need to speak to Martin.""
Thomas immediately shook his head.
"Don't call him.""
"He's been my partner for twenty years.""
"Which is exactly why you shouldn't warn him.""
Richard stared at the documents.
Then he looked at me.
"Your mother knew.""
I felt a chill.
"She knew Martin was stealing?""
Thomas nodded.
"And she had evidence.""
Daniel opened another folder.
"There's something else. A payment was made from one of the shell companies two days before Elena was hospitalized.""
Richard looked up.
"To whom?""
Daniel turned the screen.
A recipient's name appeared.
*Elena Hayes — Personal Account.*
I frowned.
"Why would someone transfer money to Mom?""
Thomas studied the entry.
"That's what we need to determine.""
Then Daniel opened the attached payment memo.
Three words appeared.
*FINAL SILENCE PAYMENT.*
Richard stood so quickly his chair fell backward.
"What the hell does that mean?""
No one answered.
I stared at the screen.
My mother had been investigating a theft.
Someone had tried to silence her.
And now we had a payment connected to the final days of her life.
Before anyone could speak, Thomas' phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
"Richard, it's Martin.""
My father took the phone.
"Put him on speaker.""
Thomas hesitated.
Then he answered.
Martin's voice filled the room.
"Richard, I heard you've been digging through Elena's old records.""
My father said nothing.
Martin continued.
"I think you need to stop before you make a terrible mistake.""
Richard leaned toward the phone.
"What mistake?""
A pause.
Then Martin spoke.
"Trust me, Richard. You don't want to know what really happened to your wife.""
May you like
The call ended.
And for the first time, my father looked afraid.
