Chapter 7: The Truth Denise Left in Writing

“Why would Mom need an agreement about me before I was even born?””

Lily's question followed Marcus long after Rebecca left the mansion with the sealed envelope and copies of the photographs.

It followed him down the staircase, through the silent kitchen, and into the living room where Denise's favorite piano still stood beside the windows.

He had no answer.

For four years, he had believed he understood the circumstances surrounding his daughter's birth. He remembered the hospital, the complications during Denise's pregnancy, and the long nights when he had held Lily against his chest while doctors explained things he desperately wanted to change.

He remembered the grief.

He remembered the promises he had made beside Denise's hospital bed.

But now, the documents suggested there had been conversations, arrangements, and decisions he had never known existed.

And Vanessa had been part of them.

Marcus found Lily sitting on the living room rug, holding the photograph of her mother.

She had taken it from the desk before Rebecca left, after Marcus checked that it was one of the copies rather than an original document.

“Are you looking at Mom again?”” he asked.

Lily nodded.

“I'm trying to remember what she sounded like.””

Marcus lowered himself onto the sofa.

“What do you remember?””

“She used to sing when she brushed my hair. She always sang the wrong words on purpose because she knew it made me laugh.””

Marcus smiled despite himself.

“She did that when we were dating, too. I used to tell her she couldn't carry a tune.””

“What did she say?””

“That I should be grateful she wasn't charging admission.””

Lily laughed softly.

For a moment, the mansion felt like home again.

Then Lily looked at the photograph.

“Do you think she was keeping something from us?””

Marcus considered his answer carefully.

“I think she had reasons for making arrangements we don't fully understand yet. That doesn't mean she stopped loving us.””

“But she didn't tell you.””

“No,” he admitted.

“She didn't.””

Lily rubbed her thumb across the photograph's folded edge.

“Maybe she thought you wouldn't believe her.””

The possibility hurt more than Marcus expected.

He had always considered himself Denise's closest confidant. He had known her favorite songs, the names she gave the plants in their garden, and the exact expression she made when she was about to disagree with him.

But perhaps love had not meant knowing everything.

Perhaps there had been things she had been afraid to tell him.

“Maybe,” he said quietly.

Lily leaned against his arm.

“I don't want to find out something bad about Mom.””

Marcus kissed the top of her head.

“Whatever we discover, it won't change who she was to you.””

That evening, he asked Vanessa to join him in the study.

She arrived without the secret phone. Her metallic champagne pantsuit had been replaced by a simple black blouse and trousers, and her hair was tucked behind her ears.

She looked exhausted.

Marcus pointed to the chair opposite his desk.

“Sit down.””

Vanessa remained standing.

“Are you going to ask me questions about Denise again?””

“Yes.””

“Then I need to tell you something before you do.””

Marcus waited.

Vanessa clasped her hands together.

“When Denise first told me about the agreement, I thought she was asking me to help her hide money from you.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would you think that?””

“Because she wouldn't explain the entire arrangement. She only said Lily needed something that belonged to her, something that no one else could control.””

“What did she say belonged to Lily?””

“I don't know. She wouldn't tell me.””

Marcus studied her face.

“You keep saying you don't know, but you were present when the document was signed.””

“I witnessed a signature. I didn't read every page.””

“Why not?””

“Because Denise told me the details were private.””

“And you agreed?””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Without reading the document?””

“I trusted her.””

Marcus leaned back.

“You trusted my first wife enough to sign something you didn't understand, but you didn't trust me enough to tell me it existed.””

Vanessa winced.

“I know how that sounds.””

“Then explain it differently.””

She sat down.

“When Denise was sick, she told me something about her childhood. She said that when she was young, her family had made decisions for her because they believed they knew what was best. She said those decisions followed her into adulthood.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Denise never told me that.””

“She told me she was afraid the same thing could happen to Lily.””

“What decisions?””

“I don't know the specifics.””

Vanessa looked up quickly.

“But she said the agreement was meant to make sure Lily had a choice when she grew up. She didn't want anyone to be able to decide her future simply because they were older, wealthier, or more powerful.””

Marcus thought of Daniel's words.

It wasn't only about money.

He rubbed his forehead.

“Did Denise say I would try to control Lily's future?””

“No.””

“Did she say I would hurt her?””

“No!””

“Then why keep the arrangement secret from me?””

Vanessa's voice softened.

“She said you would want to fix everything. You would want to know every detail, contact every person involved, and make every decision yourself because you loved Lily.””

Marcus said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“She didn't think you would deliberately take anything away from your daughter. She thought you might do it without realizing you were doing it.””

The words stung because he could imagine the possibility.

He had always been protective of Lily. He had chosen her schools, managed her schedule, and made decisions about her life before she was old enough to understand the consequences.

He had done those things because he loved her.

But perhaps Denise had worried about something he had never considered.

“What exactly did you promise her?”” he asked.

Vanessa stared at her hands.

“I promised that I wouldn't let anyone pressure Lily into signing anything or agreeing to anything before she understood what it meant.””

“And what did Daniel ask you to do?””

“He asked me to keep the documents safe.””

“Did he ask you to hide them from me?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“He said the agreement should remain confidential until the conditions were met.””

“Which conditions?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

“Did you ever consider telling me the truth?””

“Every day.””

“Yet you didn't.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of Daniel?””

“Of you.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“Explain.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you would believe I had helped Denise make a decision against you. I thought you'd assume I was trying to take something from Lily. And when we got married, I was afraid that if I told you about the documents, you'd never trust me with your family.””

“So you decided to let me trust you without knowing the truth.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

The honesty of the answer left Marcus with nothing to say.

Then she added, “And I made another mistake.””

He waited.

“When I married you, I wanted Madison and Chloe to feel that this was their home, too. I wanted them to have beautiful things, the same opportunities, the same attention. I thought if I made everything look perfect, nobody would notice how difficult it was for us to become a family.””

Marcus glanced toward the dressing room.

“Is that why you spent fifty thousand dollars on dresses?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I can't use Denise's agreement to explain that. The dresses were my decision. I wanted the girls to have the best things, and I stopped thinking about whether I was being fair.””

“And Lily?””

“I treated her differently.””

“Why?””

Vanessa's eyes dropped.

“Because she reminded me of Denise.””

Marcus felt anger rise again.

“So you punished an eleven-year-old for looking like her dead mother?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't mean to.””

“But you did it.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The admission sat between them.

For once, Vanessa did not try to defend herself.

Marcus looked toward the door.

“I'm not ready to forgive you.””

“I understand.””

“And I won't let you treat Lily that way again.””

“I understand.””

“If you want to remain part of this family, you will have to earn back the trust you've destroyed.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I know.””

Before Marcus could continue, his phone rang.

Rebecca.

He answered immediately.

“Tell me you have something.””

“I do,” Rebecca replied.

“I located Eleanor Price's former law practice. She retired two years ago, but her firm retained archived records. I provided the reference number from the photograph, and they've confirmed that a file exists.””

Marcus stood.

“What kind of file?””

“They won't discuss its contents until the appropriate identity and authorization checks are completed. However, the reference number matches the record in Lily's photograph.””

“Can they tell you who the beneficiary is?””

“Not yet.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“What about the signature?””

“The firm has a copy of the signed document. They've agreed to arrange a formal review. I don't want to speculate until we have the complete record.””

“Can we see it tomorrow?””

“I'm trying to arrange that.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Did Daniel know this file was still with the firm?””

Vanessa shook her head.

Marcus relayed the question.

Rebecca paused.

“Marcus, there's something else. The file contains a notation indicating that a separate statement was submitted several months after Denise's death.””

“What kind of statement?””

“I haven't seen it yet. The staff member I spoke with couldn't provide further details without authorization.””

Marcus felt his pulse quicken.

“Who submitted it?””

“That's what I'm trying to establish.””

The call ended with a promise that Rebecca would contact him as soon as she had more information.

Marcus stood motionless beside the desk.

Vanessa watched him.

“What did she say?””

He turned slowly.

“Someone submitted a separate statement several months after Denise died.””

Vanessa's face went pale.

“That's impossible.””

Marcus studied her.

“Why?””

She looked toward the window.

Then she whispered, “Because Daniel told me everything had been completed before Denise died.””

Marcus's phone vibrated again.

A message appeared from Rebecca.

*THE ARCHIVE HAS CONFIRMED THAT THE SEPARATE STATEMENT WAS SUBMITTED UNDER YOUR NAME.*

Marcus read it twice.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

She was already shaking her head.

“No,” she whispered.

“No, that can't be right.””

Marcus looked back at the message.

Someone had submitted a statement under his name after his wife died.

Someone had made a decision involving the agreement, apparently in his name, without his knowledge.

And if the signature on the original document was only the beginning, then the question was no longer simply what Denise had arranged for Lily.

The question was who had been acting on Marcus's behalf while he was grieving.

And what, exactly, had they authorized?
