Chapter 5: The Sister Who Wanted My Daughter
By the time I left Denise Carter's office, the afternoon sunlight had faded behind a layer of gray clouds.
I sat in Marcus's passenger seat with the court papers resting on my knees.
Renee Wallace.
Monique's older sister.
I had known Renee for almost five years. She attended our wedding, brought food when Zoe had the flu, and sent birthday cards to both children.
She had always been polite to me.
Sometimes overly polite.
But I had never considered her a threat.
"Do you think she knows what Monique is doing?"" Marcus asked as he pulled into traffic.
I looked out the window.
"I think she knows more than she's telling us.""
"That's not the same thing.""
"No," I admitted.
"It isn't.""
My phone vibrated.
Monique was calling.
I watched the screen for several seconds before answering.
"What do you want?""
Her voice was unusually soft.
"Andre, where are you?""
"With the children.""
"Are they okay?""
The question almost made me laugh.
"You want to know if they're okay now?""
"Don't do that. I'm still their family.""
"Zoe was crying so hard this morning that she asked me whether she was a bad child.""
Silence.
Then Monique said, "I never said she was bad.""
"You told her she was ruining the vacation.""
"I said the situation was ruining it.""
"She is eight years old, Monique. She doesn't understand the distinction you're trying to make.""
Monique exhaled sharply.
"Look, I admit I lost my temper. I was frustrated, and I said things I shouldn't have said. But you're taking this way too far.""
"You sent me a message threatening me with papers.""
"I was angry.""
"You had documents prepared before this morning.""
Another silence.
When she spoke again, the softness was gone.
"Who told you that?""
I gripped the phone.
"Is that what you're worried about? Finding out who told me?""
"Andre, you have no idea what you're dealing with.""
"Then explain it to me.""
"I don't have to explain everything to you.""
"You're my wife. If you're trying to take my daughter away from me, you absolutely do.""
Monique made a small, dismissive sound.
"Nobody is taking Zoe anywhere. You're the one who walked out and abandoned your household.""
"I took the children somewhere they could feel safe.""
"And what happens when Cam decides he wants to come home? Are you going to keep him from me, too?""
"Cam is old enough to tell me what he wants. I'm not going to use him as leverage against you.""
"How noble.""
I closed my eyes.
"Monique, I'm asking you one last time. What did you sign, and what did Renee file?""
Her voice became cold.
"You should have thought about that before you embarrassed me in my own home.""
Then she hung up.
Marcus glanced at me.
"That went well.""
I let out a humorless laugh.
"She didn't deny it.""
"No, she didn't.""
I called Denise and gave her a factual account of the conversation. She advised me to preserve the call details and avoid further arguments until she could review the filing.
Then I sent Monique a short message asking that any discussion about the children or the legal documents be kept in writing.
Her reply came almost immediately.
Fine. Everything will be handled through the proper channels.
I stared at those words.
For a woman who had spent the morning shouting in our living room, she had become remarkably formal.
That worried me more than the shouting.
That evening, Cam and I sat at Marcus's dining table while Zoe slept upstairs.
A plate of untouched pasta sat between us.
Cam kept turning his fork in his fingers.
"Do you hate Mom?"" he finally asked.
I looked at him.
"No.""
He seemed surprised.
"Even after all this?""
"Being angry with someone doesn't mean you stop caring about them. And loving someone doesn't mean you pretend they haven't hurt people.""
He looked down.
"I don't want her to get in trouble.""
"I know.""
"But I don't want her to keep treating Zoe like that.""
I reached across the table and placed my hand over his.
"Those feelings can exist together, buddy. You can love your mother and still tell the truth about what happened.""
His eyes filled.
"She used to be different.""
I waited.
Cam swallowed.
"When you first married her, she really tried with Zoe. She took us both to the park. She helped Zoe with her reading. She even let Zoe sleep in her room when she had nightmares.""
"I remember.""
"But after a while, she started getting annoyed whenever you did something for Zoe.""
"Like what?""
"Anything, really. If you picked Zoe up from school, Mom would say you were making her dependent on you. If you bought Zoe something, she'd say you were spoiling her. If you took us both somewhere, she'd complain that the whole day revolved around Zoe.""
He rubbed his eyes.
"I thought if I stayed quiet, things would get better.""
I felt a heaviness settle in my chest.
"You shouldn't have had to manage your mother's feelings to keep the peace.""
"I know that now.""
He paused.
"There's something I haven't told you because I thought it might make things worse.""
I sat straighter.
"What is it?""
"About two months ago, Mom asked me to help her move a box from the closet in her bedroom. She told me not to look inside it.""
"Did you?""
"Not at first. But later, I went back because I thought my headphones might be in there.""
He took his phone from his pocket.
"There were folders inside. One had your name on it. Another had Zoe's name.""
My pulse quickened.
"What did you see?""
"Bank statements. Copies of your house papers. Some printed emails. And a page with Renee's name on it.""
"Do you still have the picture?""
Cam shook his head.
"I didn't take one. But I saw something that looked like a list of dates and amounts. Mom told Aunt Renee on the phone that everything had to be finished before the end of the month.""
I sat back.
"Did you hear why?""
"No. But I remember Mom saying, 'Once the guardianship is in place, he'll have no choice but to cooperate.''"
The room went silent.
I thought about Zoe's savings account, the deed to my house, and the petition claiming I needed help raising my own child.
The pieces seemed connected, but I couldn't yet see the whole picture.
"Cam, did you ever hear your mother mention money that belonged to Zoe?""
He hesitated.
"Yes.""
"What did she say?""
"She asked Aunt Renee whether the money could be used for Zoe's expenses if Renee became her guardian.""
I frowned.
"That money is in a savings account. It's not a pile of cash sitting around for anyone to take.""
"I know. But Mom said there was more money than you told her about.""
I stared at him.
"More money?""
He nodded.
"She said you had another account connected to your business.""
I did have a small business account for my contracting company. But Monique had never been involved in its day-to-day operations.
I kept the business finances separate from our household finances because I had learned years earlier that mixing everything together made bookkeeping unnecessarily complicated.
The account wasn't a secret.
But I had never discussed its balance with her in detail.
"Did she mention how much?""
Cam shook his head.
"No. She just said it would make everything easier if Renee had legal authority.""
I pushed back from the table.
"I need to check my accounts.""
Marcus appeared in the doorway.
"Not alone, you don't.""
I looked at him.
He pulled out a chair.
"You're upset. Let Denise guide the legal side, and call your bank's fraud department if you have reason to suspect unauthorized access. Don't start moving money or accusing people without checking the facts.""
He was right.
I opened my laptop and logged in to my business banking portal.
The account balance appeared.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Then I opened the recent transactions.
A transfer had been initiated two days earlier.
The destination account was unfamiliar.
The amount was $18,500.
I stared at the screen.
"Marcus.""
He came around the table.
"What?""
I pointed.
His expression changed instantly.
"Did you authorize that?""
"No.""
I opened the transaction details.
The transfer was marked pending review. The account showed an unfamiliar external connection request.
My hands began to shake.
I called the bank's fraud department. After verifying my identity, I explained that I did not recognize the transfer and asked them to review the account activity.
The representative placed me on hold.
Cam stood behind me, breathing shallowly.
When the representative returned, she asked whether I had recently approved any new authorized users or linked accounts.
"No," I said.
"Not that I remember.""
"Sir, I can see a recent request involving a person named Renee Wallace. The request hasn't been completed, but there is documentation attached that appears to contain your authorization.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"Can you tell me what documentation?""
"Not in detail until the review is complete. I can place a temporary restriction on the pending transfer and refer the authorization request for a fraud investigation.""
"Please do that.""
The representative explained the next steps and gave me a reference number.
When the call ended, I sat motionless.
Marcus read the transaction details again.
"She was trying to move money.""
"Someone was trying to move money," I corrected automatically.
I wanted evidence before assigning blame.
But my thoughts kept returning to Monique's message.
Now you'll find out what those papers really mean.
Cam pulled out a chair and sat beside me.
"Did Mom do this?""
"I don't know yet.""
He stared at the floor.
"I think she did.""
I didn't answer.
Instead, I photographed the account information, saved the bank's reference number, and sent the details to Denise.
Her reply arrived within minutes.
Do not contact Renee about the transfer. Preserve the records. I'll coordinate with the appropriate professionals and review the court filing first thing tomorrow.
I closed the laptop.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a small voice came from the hallway.
"Daddy?""
Zoe stood at the entrance, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
I immediately stood.
"Hey, sweetheart. What's wrong?""
She rubbed one eye.
"I had a bad dream.""
I crouched in front of her.
"What happened in your dream?""
She hesitated, looking from me to Cam.
"Monique was taking all my pictures off the wall.""
My chest tightened.
"And then?""
"She said I wasn't really part of the family anymore.""
I pulled her into my arms.
"That was a dream, baby. You're part of my family. Nothing about that changes.""
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
"Even if she doesn't want me?""
I closed my eyes.
"Even then.""
Behind us, Cam quietly wiped his face.
I carried Zoe back upstairs and tucked her into bed. I stayed beside her until her breathing slowed and her fingers relaxed around the stuffed rabbit.
When I returned downstairs, my phone was vibrating.
A message from Denise.
I reviewed the filing more closely. There's a supporting statement signed by Renee that alleges Zoe's biological mother has been absent for years and that you have struggled to provide a stable home.
I read it twice.
Zoe's biological mother, Lauren, had died when Zoe was four. Her death certificate, school records, medical records, and years of documented parenting were all part of my life.
The claim was both cruel and misleading.
Then another message appeared.
The statement also identifies a person who allegedly witnessed you agree to the guardianship.
I typed back.
Who?
The reply came a few seconds later.
Monique.
I stared at the screen.
She wasn't merely connected to the paperwork.
She was presenting herself as a witness to an agreement I had never knowingly made.
But the worst part was still ahead.
Because Denise sent one final message before midnight.
Andre, the filing includes an allegation that you intend to move Zoe out of state and prevent Renee from having contact with her. We need to understand why this claim was included. It may affect how the court views the request.
I looked through the darkened window toward the street.
Monique had spent the morning demanding that I leave my daughter behind.
By evening, she was helping someone argue that I was the one who couldn't be trusted with her.
May you like
And I was beginning to understand that the real battle would not be won by proving how much I loved Zoe.
It would be won by proving what Monique had been willing to do in order to control us.
