Chapter 6: The Message That Changed Everything

I read the message three times.

*Stop investigating the wedding. Your daughter is not as innocent as you think.*

The sender had used an unfamiliar number.

I looked toward Ava.

She stood halfway up the staircase, one hand gripping the railing.

"Dad?""

I quickly locked my phone.

"Come here, sweetheart.""

She walked down slowly.

"What's wrong?""

"Nothing you need to worry about right now.""

She studied my face.

"That's what you say when something is wrong.""

I couldn't argue with that.

I sat at the kitchen island and asked her to sit beside me.

"Have you been receiving strange messages?""

She frowned.

"What kind of messages?""

"Anything from numbers you don't recognize. Anyone asking questions about the house, your mother, or the estate?""

She shook her head.

"No. Why?""

I showed her the message.

She read it silently.

Then she looked up.

"Someone is trying to make you suspicious of me.""

"That's possible.""

"Or they know something.""

I watched her carefully.

"Is there anything you haven't told me?""

Her expression changed.

For a few seconds, she didn't answer.

Then she looked down at her hands.

"There's something I should have told you.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

She took a deep breath.

"Three weeks ago, Brielle asked me to sign something.""

"What something?""

"She said it was a form for the wedding venue. She wanted to prove that everyone in the family supported it.""

I stared at her.

"Did you sign it?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because my name was already printed on it, and there was a section asking me to confirm that I agreed to a change in the estate ownership.""

I leaned forward.

"What did you do?""

"I took a picture.""

"Where is it?""

"On my phone.""

She unlocked it and opened her photographs.

The document appeared.

I zoomed in.

The heading read:

*FAMILY ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND CONSENT.*

Beneath it were several paragraphs about the proposed wedding and the future management of the Carter Estate.

The final section stated that Ava acknowledged Brielle's intended ownership interest in the property.

I looked at my daughter.

"Why didn't you show me this?""

Ava's eyes filled.

"Because I didn't want you to think I was causing another problem.""

I reached across the counter.

"You're not causing problems by telling me the truth.""

She nodded.

Then she said something that made my chest tighten.

"Brielle told me if I signed it, she'd give my mother's handbag back.""

I stared at her.

"She used your mother's handbag to pressure you?""

Ava nodded.

"She said Mom wanted everything to be fair, and that I was being selfish by keeping things that belonged to my mother.""

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I looked at her.

"Did Brielle ever threaten you?""

"Not exactly.""

"What does that mean?""

Ava hesitated.

"She said that if I kept interfering with the wedding, Tyler would make sure I couldn't stay in the house.""

My hands tightened.

"She said that?""

"Yes.""

I stood.

"That's enough.""

I called Daniel and explained everything.

He asked Ava to preserve the original photograph and send it directly to his secure email.

Then he said, "Michael, we need to meet today. Bring every document you have.""

"I'll be there.""

"And don't tell Vanella anything about the message.""

I looked at the phone.

"I won't.""

After the call, Ava went upstairs to get ready.

I remained at the kitchen island, staring at the document.

Then another message arrived.

This time, it was a photograph.

It showed Ava leaving a coffee shop three days earlier.

The picture had been taken from across the street.

Beneath it was a short message:

*We know where she goes. Think carefully before you make this worse.*

I immediately forwarded it to Daniel.

Then I called the police non-emergency line and asked how to report a possible threat and unwanted surveillance.

I wasn't going to treat it as a family argument anymore.

An hour later, I met Daniel in his office.

He had several folders spread across the conference table.

"Sit down," he said.

I placed my phone beside the documents.

"Someone sent me a photograph of Ava.""

He examined it.

"Did you recognize the location?""

"Yes. A coffee shop near her internship.""

He nodded.

"Keep the original message. Don't respond.""

Then he opened a folder.

"Now, about the estate document.""

He turned the first page toward me.

"This is the original authorization submitted by Vanella.""

I examined it.

The first few pages looked familiar.

Then Daniel placed a second document beside it.

"This is the additional declaration Laura mentioned.""

I read the heading.

*TESTAMENTARY INTENT AND FAMILY BENEFICIARY DECLARATION.*

My stomach dropped.

The document stated that I intended to leave a significant portion of my estate to Brielle.

Ava was described as having already received sufficient financial support.

I shook my head.

"I never agreed to this.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's why we need to investigate how the document was prepared and submitted.""

He pointed to the bottom of the page.

"Look at the witness names.""

I leaned forward.

One name was Denise Bennett.

The other was Richard Grant.

I stared at him.

"Richard witnessed this?""

"According to the document.""

I looked up.

"Why would he be involved in my estate?""

Daniel closed the folder.

"That's what we're going to find out.""

He then showed me a company registration record.

V.B. Holdings had been established seven months earlier.

Its registered director was Denise Bennett.

But the company's financial records showed something unusual.

A large deposit had been made from a company associated with Richard Grant.

The amount was $250,000.

I stared at the figure.

"What's that money for?""

"We don't know yet.""

"Can you trace it?""

"We're requesting the records through the appropriate legal channels.""

I leaned back.

"Daniel, I need to know whether my wife and her family are trying to steal my property.""

He looked at me directly.

"I think you should prepare for the possibility that this was planned long before the Hawaii trip.""

I rubbed my face.

"How long?""

He turned another page.

"At least seven months.""

I looked at the company registration date.

Seven months.

That was around the time Vanella had started asking me about updating my will.

She had said it was important to organize everything while I was healthy.

I remembered her sitting across from me at dinner, gently suggesting that I should make sure Brielle had a secure future.

I had dismissed it as ordinary family planning.

Apparently, I had misunderstood.

"Can we stop everything?"" I asked.

"We can take steps to protect your property and accounts. We can also challenge any document obtained through misrepresentation or without proper consent.""

"Do it.""

Daniel nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

"That's Laura Mills.""

He answered.

"Laura, I'm with Michael now.""

He listened.

His expression changed.

"What?""

He stood.

"Are you certain?""

A long pause.

Then he looked at me.

"Send it over immediately.""

He ended the call.

"What happened?"" I asked.

Daniel sat down slowly.

"Laura received a new instruction from the company handling the property transaction.""

"From whom?""

"Vanella.""

I stared at him.

"What did she request?""

Daniel opened his laptop.

"She asked them to proceed with the transfer despite the hold.""

"Can she do that?""

"No. Not without further verification.""

"Then what's the problem?""

Daniel turned the laptop toward me.

There was an attached letter.

It claimed I had given Vanella permission to act on my behalf and that my earlier objection had been made under temporary emotional distress.

I laughed in disbelief.

"Emotional distress?""

Daniel didn't smile.

"There's another issue.""

He enlarged the attached file.

It was a scanned copy of a medical statement.

The heading contained my name.

The statement suggested that I had recently experienced memory problems and might not be capable of managing complex financial decisions without assistance.

I stared at the page.

"I've never seen this.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's what concerns me.""

"Who signed it?""

He zoomed in.

A physician's name appeared at the bottom.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

I recognized him.

He was the doctor Vanella had encouraged me to visit earlier that year for a routine health assessment.

I had gone once.

But he had never told me anything about memory problems.

I looked at Daniel.

"Call him.""

"Already have. His office says he did not issue this statement.""

I felt the room tilt.

"Then someone forged it.""

"That's what it appears to be.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

My wife hadn't just lied about a dress.

She had apparently submitted documents that questioned my ability to manage my own affairs.

And she had done it while telling everyone I was a loving husband and a generous father.

Daniel's voice brought me back.

"Michael, there's one more thing.""

I turned.

He had opened a new email.

The sender was Tyler Grant.

The subject line read:

*Wedding Arrangements — Final Confirmation.*

Daniel looked at me.

"This was forwarded to me by someone involved in the development negotiations.""

He opened it.

The message was addressed to Richard Grant and Vanella.

It contained a list of tasks.

- Finalize the estate authorization. - Confirm the Carter property transfer. - Complete the beneficiary changes.

- Hold the wedding at Carter Estate. - Announce the new family ownership arrangement after the ceremony.

I read the list.

Then I noticed the final paragraph.

*Once Michael has publicly accepted the marriage and the family arrangement, it will be much harder for him to challenge the transaction without damaging his reputation.*

I stared at the screen.

The wedding wasn't just a celebration.

They wanted me standing in front of guests, smiling beside my wife, while they presented a story about my daughter losing her inheritance and Brielle gaining control of my estate.

They wanted my presence to make their plan look legitimate.

I looked at Daniel.

"How do we stop them?""

He closed the laptop.

"First, we secure your assets. Then we make sure nobody can represent you without your direct authorization. After that, we deal with the people involved.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

As I gathered my belongings, my phone rang.

Vanella.

I answered.

"What?""

Her voice sounded unusually calm.

"Michael, we need to talk.""

"About what?""

"The wedding.""

"There is no wedding at my house.""

She ignored me.

"Richard and Tyler are coming over tonight. Brielle wants to make an announcement.""

"What announcement?""

"Something important.""

I almost laughed.

"Another surprise document?""

"Michael, please. Just come home and behave like a reasonable husband.""

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head slightly, warning me not to reveal what we had discovered.

I kept my voice even.

"I'll be home.""

Vanella seemed relieved.

"Good. And Michael?""

"Yes?""

"Please wear a suit. There will be guests.""

She ended the call.

I looked at Daniel.

"She's inviting people into my house to announce something.""

"Then don't go alone.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Have someone you trust with you. And don't sign anything.""

I nodded.

On the drive home, I called my security manager and asked him to review the guest arrangements for that evening.

When I arrived, the mansion was already decorated.

White flowers lined the staircase.

A champagne table had been set up in the sitting room.

There were photographs of Brielle and Tyler in silver frames.

And on the grand fireplace was a large sign:

*THE CARTER-GRANT FAMILY CELEBRATION.*

I stopped in the doorway.

Vanella appeared at the top of the stairs.

She was wearing an elegant ivory dress.

Brielle stood beside her, smiling.

Tyler was near the fireplace, talking to Richard Grant.

All three turned when they saw me.

Vanella descended the stairs.

"Michael! You're here.""

I looked around.

"What's all this?""

She smiled.

"Tonight, we're making everything official.""

I glanced at Tyler.

Then Richard.

Then Brielle.

"What exactly are you making official?""

Vanella reached for my arm.

"Our family.""

I gently moved away.

"Then why does everyone look like they're waiting for a business deal?""

Her smile tightened.

Richard stepped forward.

"Michael, let's not start the evening with tension.""

I looked at him.

"Richard, I believe we have something to discuss.""

He gave a small laugh.

"Of course. But first, we have an announcement.""

Tyler took Brielle's hand.

Brielle looked nervous.

Vanella lifted her champagne glass.

"Everyone, may I have your attention?""

The room went quiet.

She smiled at the guests.

"Tonight is about a new beginning. A new chapter for our family. And a future that will bring us all closer together.""

I watched her carefully.

Then she turned toward me.

"Michael has agreed to make a very generous commitment to Brielle and Tyler as they begin their married life.""

The guests applauded.

I didn't move.

Vanella continued.

"He's agreed to give them a beautiful home and a share in the Carter family estate.""

A murmur of excitement spread through the room.

I stared at her.

Then I looked at Tyler.

He was smiling.

Richard raised his glass.

And Brielle slowly turned toward me.

Her expression was no longer smug.

It was terrified.

Because she knew I had never agreed to any of it.

I stepped forward.

"That's interesting.""

Vanella's smile froze.

I reached into my jacket and removed a document.

"Because I brought something of my own tonight.""

The room fell silent.

I placed the document on the table.

It was a formal notice confirming that the proposed property transfer had been placed under legal review and that any attempt to represent me without authorization would be challenged.

Richard's smile disappeared.

Tyler released Brielle's hand.

Vanella stared at the document.

"What have you done?""

I looked at her.

"I protected what belongs to my daughter.""

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel appeared.

*Michael. We identified the person who submitted the false medical statement. It wasn't Vanella.*

I looked up.

Vanella was staring at me.

Richard had gone completely pale.

And Tyler was already reaching for his phone.

I opened Daniel's next message.

*The signature came from someone inside your own house. Someone who had access to your private documents and your office.*

I slowly looked toward the staircase.

Ava stood at the top, watching the room.

But behind her, just inside the dark hallway, someone was standing motionless.

Someone I hadn't expected to see.

May you like

Someone holding a folder with my name printed across the front.

And when the person stepped into the light, I realized the betrayal had come much closer to home than I ever imagined.
