Chapter 1: The Man She Never Expected to See
“Marcus, you still have nothing. No money, no status, nothing.””
Ava said it loudly enough for the nearest tables to hear.
She stood beneath a chandelier dripping with crystal, wearing an elegant off-the-shoulder wedding gown. Her dark hair was swept into a perfect bun, and diamonds glittered at her ears. Behind her, white roses climbed across the reception archway. Waiters moved between tables carrying champagne, while a string quartet played something soft and expensive.
Everything about the evening screamed wealth.
And Marcus stood in front of her holding a small black gift box.
He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo. His shoes were polished, his posture relaxed, and his expression almost impossible to read.
“Congratulations, Ava,” he said.
“I genuinely wish you both well.””
Ava stared at the box.
Then she looked at his face.
For a moment, surprise crossed her features. It disappeared almost immediately, replaced by a familiar expression of superiority.
“You actually came here?””
Marcus gave a small nod.
“Just wanted to say congratulations.””
Ava laughed under her breath.
“That's generous of you. Considering everything.””
Marcus didn't answer.
He had learned a long time ago that silence was often more revealing than an argument.
But Ava wasn't finished.
She tilted her champagne glass, examining him from head to toe.
“Marcus, you still have nothing. No money, no status, nothing. This is what my life looks like now. You never could have given me any of this.””
A nearby woman stopped talking.
A man at the next table glanced over.
Marcus slowly lowered the gift box.
“I'm happy you're happy,” he said.
Ava smiled.
It was the kind of smile people wore when they believed they had won something.
Three years earlier, she had walked out of Marcus's apartment with two suitcases and a declaration that she couldn't spend her life waiting for a man who had no ambition.
She had called him comfortable.
Predictable.
A man with big dreams and no future.
At the time, Marcus had been working eighteen-hour days building a company with two partners. He had skipped vacations, missed birthdays, and eaten more dinners at his office desk than he could remember.
Ava had seen none of that as sacrifice.
She had seen it as failure.
And when Daniel entered her life, everything changed.
Daniel wore designer suits. He drove expensive cars. He knew how to enter a room and make people turn their heads.
Ava had mistaken the appearance of success for the substance of it.
Now she had the wedding she had always wanted.
A grand ballroom.
Hundreds of guests.
A husband who looked like he belonged on the cover of a business magazine.
And Marcus, the man she had once rejected, standing in front of her with a gift.
“Is that supposed to be something expensive?”” Ava asked, pointing at the box.
Marcus glanced down.
“It's just a gift.””
“You didn't have to spend money you don't have.””
He almost smiled.
Before he could respond, a familiar voice came from behind her.
“Marcus!””
Daniel approached with his jacket buttoned and a wide, genuine smile.
He was holding a glass of champagne in one hand. His wedding ring caught the chandelier light as he extended his other hand.
“I didn't know you were coming!””
Marcus shook his hand.
“Congratulations, Daniel. Beautiful wedding.””
“Thank you. I'm glad you made it.””
Ava turned sharply toward her husband.
“You know him?””
Daniel looked at her, confused.
“Of course.””
He laughed lightly and placed an arm around her waist.
“Marcus is my boss.””
Ava blinked.
“What?””
Daniel continued, apparently unaware of the change in her expression.
“Actually, Marcus owns the company.””
The smile disappeared from Ava's face.
Daniel turned back toward Marcus.
“He's the reason I got the opportunity to build my career. One of the best executives in the entire organization.””
Marcus offered a polite smile.
“Daniel's one of my best executives.””
Ava's fingers tightened around her champagne glass.
Her eyes moved between the two men.
“But... I thought—”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Nothing.””
Daniel took another sip of champagne before remembering something.
“Oh, Marcus. There's something else.””
Marcus raised his eyebrows.
“What's that?””
Daniel grinned.
“Remember the executive position I told you about? The one we're interviewing candidates for on Monday?””
Marcus nodded.
“Of course.””
Daniel looked at Ava.
“Well, my wife has been telling me she's interested in moving into senior management. She's got an interview scheduled for Monday.””
Ava's face changed.
Daniel continued cheerfully.
“Marcus makes the final hiring decision.””
The music seemed to fade.
Marcus looked directly at Ava.
For the first time that evening, he allowed his expression to change.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Just quiet recognition.
“I was actually looking forward to our interview,” he said.
Ava froze.
Her champagne glass trembled slightly.
Daniel looked between them.
“Wait. You two know each other?””
Marcus glanced at the gift box still in his hand.
“We've met before.””
Ava couldn't find a word.
And then Marcus added something that made her blood run cold.
“Although I didn't realize she was your wife.””
Daniel's smile faded.
“Why? What happened?””
Marcus looked at Ava.
She looked back at him, suddenly desperate for him not to answer.
Then Marcus said quietly:
“Perhaps your wife can explain.””
May you like
And for the first time since the wedding began, Daniel wasn't looking at his bride with admiration.
He was looking at her with questions.
