“Who opened the account?””
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
“I don't want to give you a name until you've seen the records yourself.””
“Why?””
“Because I made a mistake once by trusting what someone told me. I'm not going to ask you to make the same mistake.””
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
“You just told me someone opened an account in my name without my knowledge. You can't expect me to sit here and wait.””
“I understand.””
“Then tell me.””
He exhaled.
“The account was opened by someone who had access to your grandmother's financial records. Someone she trusted.””
I closed my eyes.
“Mr. Whitaker?””
“No.””
“Franklin Hayes?””
“No.””
I waited.
Finally, Daniel said, “Your biological father.””
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
