Chapter 4: The Woman in the Gray Uniform

The woman in the gray catering uniform didn't move.

She stood beside the ballroom entrance, holding a black smartphone in one hand and a folded white napkin in the other. Her eyes kept moving between me and Vanessa.

I recognized her vaguely.

She had been working at the venue all morning.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

She swallowed.

“My name is Emily Carter. I'm part of the catering staff.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Emily, this is a private family matter. Please return to your station.””

Emily didn't move.

“I'm sorry, Miss Vanessa. But I can't keep quiet anymore.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Excuse me?””

Emily looked at me.

“Mr. Brooks, I sent you those messages.””

I glanced at my phone.

“You said you had proof.””

“I do.””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“This is absurd. She's a temporary employee. She doesn't know anything about our family.””

Emily's fingers tightened around her phone.

“I know what I've seen.””

Vanessa took another step toward her.

“Be very careful about what you're saying.””

I moved between them.

“Let her speak.””

The ballroom had become completely silent.

Two hundred guests were watching us.

Some still held champagne glasses. Others had their phones raised, recording everything.

My mother approached from the front table.

“Daniel, what's going on?””

“I don't know yet.””

Emily took a breath.

“Three weeks ago, I was assigned to a private event at your house, Mr. Brooks. I was helping another employee clean the kitchen when I heard Lily crying upstairs.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What happened?””

Emily looked down.

“I didn't see everything. But I heard Miss Vanessa telling Lily that if she wanted to stay in your house, she needed to stop acting like a baby.””

Vanessa threw up her hands.

“Oh, for God's sake!””

Emily continued.

“She told Lily that you were tired of dealing with her behavior. She said you wanted a peaceful home and that Lily was making it impossible.””

I looked toward my daughter.

Rachel had moved her behind one of the reception pillars.

Lily was watching us.

Her small hand was wrapped around Rachel's fingers.

“Did you hear anything else?”” I asked.

Emily nodded.

“She said something about the bedroom.””

“What bedroom?””

“The room your daughter used to sleep in.””

I stared at her.

“What about it?””

Emily hesitated.

“Miss Vanessa said the room would eventually belong to her own children.””

A strange silence settled over the room.

Vanessa's expression changed.

“That is a complete lie.””

Emily looked at her.

“You told Lily she would have to move into the smaller guest room.””

Vanessa's voice became sharp.

“Because the bedroom was going to be renovated!””

“Then why did you tell her that her toys would be donated?””

Vanessa stopped.

I turned toward her.

“What toys?””

She looked at me.

“Daniel, don't listen to this woman.””

“What toys?””

“Your daughter has too many things. I was trying to organize the house.””

Emily shook her head.

“She told Lily that her old toys were taking up space and that a proper family didn't need so much clutter.””

I remembered the empty shelves in Lily's bedroom.

Two weeks earlier, she had asked me where her collection of stuffed animals had gone.

Vanessa told me Lily had decided she was too old for them.

I had believed her.

“Where are they?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked away.

“Probably in storage.””

“Probably?””

“Daniel, we can discuss this later.””

Emily unlocked her phone.

“There's something else.””

She opened a video.

The footage showed a hallway in my house.

It was recorded from a stationary security camera near the staircase.

The date was three weeks earlier.

At first, the hallway was empty.

Then Lily appeared, carrying a stuffed rabbit.

Vanessa entered from the opposite direction.

Even without sound, I recognized the moment Lily stopped and looked up at her.

Vanessa pointed toward the bedroom.

Lily shook her head.

Vanessa took the rabbit from her hands.

Then she walked toward a large cardboard box near the stairs.

She dropped the rabbit inside.

Lily immediately started crying.

I stopped breathing.

The video continued.

Vanessa pointed upstairs.

Lily walked away alone.

I looked at Emily.

“Where did you get this?””

“Your house has cameras. The event manager showed me the footage when I asked for help locating something I'd misplaced during that private event. I wasn't supposed to keep a copy, but I saw what happened afterward.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Why did you throw away her rabbit?””

“It was dirty.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you would have made a big deal out of it!””

I stared at her.

It was the first honest thing she'd said all afternoon.

Vanessa seemed to realize it.

She quickly softened her voice.

“Daniel, I was trying to help Lily grow up. She is overly attached to childish things. She needs boundaries.””

“She is seven.””

“And she needs discipline!””

My mother stepped forward.

“Vanessa, what is wrong with you?””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Don't start, Margaret. You've never supported me.””

My mother looked at Lily.

Then she looked at the uneven curls around her face.

“I supported you because my son loved you. I never agreed to what you've been doing to that little girl.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears again.

“You're all making me the villain.””

Emily quietly put her phone away.

“I'm sorry, Mr. Brooks. I didn't want to ruin your wedding. But when I saw Lily coming downstairs with her hair like that, I couldn't stay quiet.””

I nodded.

“Thank you.””

Then I looked toward Rachel.

“Can you take Lily outside for a few minutes?””

Rachel nodded.

As she led Lily away, my daughter looked back.

“Daddy?””

I crouched.

“I'm right here.””

“Are we going home?””

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“Together?””

I swallowed.

“Always.””

She nodded and disappeared through the side doors.

Vanessa watched her leave.

Then she turned to me.

“Daniel, if you walk away from me today, don't expect me to come begging.””

I looked at the woman I had planned to spend the rest of my life with.

“I don't want you to beg.””

“Then what do you want?””

“The truth.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You've heard enough from strangers.””

“No. I've heard enough from you.””

Her father approached again.

“Daniel, this has gone too far. We can settle this privately.””

I looked at him.

“Your daughter was hurting my child privately. That's the problem.””

He clenched his jaw.

Then Vanessa said something that made everyone around us turn.

“Fine. You want the truth? Lily isn't the only reason I've been unhappy.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward the guests.

Then back at me.

“It means there are things about your daughter that you don't know.””

My phone vibrated again.

Another message from Emily.

This time, it contained a photograph.

A document.

At the top were the words:
