Chapter 3: The Doctor Who Never Examined Him
For a moment, Michael couldn't hear anything except the clock.
Dr. Samuel Brooks had been his primary care physician for nearly eleven years. He had treated Michael for ordinary illnesses, monitored his blood pressure, and once helped him recover from pneumonia that had kept him away from work for almost three weeks.
Michael trusted him.
He also knew, with absolute certainty, that he had never undergone a medical evaluation declaring him incapable of managing his affairs.
“Richard,” he said, “call the doctor.””
Richard was already reaching for his phone.
“I'll contact his office and ask them to preserve the relevant records. We shouldn't assume the statement is authentic until it's verified.””
Vanessa descended the staircase again.
“What's happening now?””
Michael held up the phone.
“Someone submitted a medical statement claiming I can't manage my own finances.””
Her expression shifted for the briefest instant.
Then she laughed.
“Oh, Michael. You told me yourself that you've been exhausted. Maybe the doctor was concerned.””
“I haven't seen him in months.””
“Perhaps it was based on your medical history.””
“Did you arrange this?””
She looked toward Richard.
“This is getting out of hand.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Did you arrange this?””
Vanessa adjusted the strap of her handbag.
“I don't know what document you're talking about.””
“You said that about the sale agreement. You said that about the power of attorney. You said that about the payments.””
“Because you're treating every piece of paper as evidence of a conspiracy!””
Richard raised his phone to his ear and walked toward the hallway, keeping his voice low.
Malik stood motionless beside the moving box.
Michael noticed his son's hands trembling.
“What's wrong?”” he asked.
Malik looked toward Vanessa, then back at his father.
“There's something I didn't tell you.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“Of course there is.””
Michael didn't look at her.
“Go ahead, son.””
Malik swallowed.
“Last month, I came downstairs late at night to get water. Vanessa was in your office. She had your old tax documents spread across the desk, and she was taking pictures of them.””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“I was organizing the household records.””
“You told me to leave,” Malik replied.
“Then you asked if I knew where you kept your driver's license and passport.””
“I was looking for insurance information.””
“You asked me whether Dad still used the same signature on his bank account.””
The foyer went silent.
Michael stared at his wife.
“Why would you ask my son that?””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“Because you never tell me where you put anything!””
“You have access to our household records.””
“Not everything!””
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Richard, who had returned to the foyer, lowered his phone.
“Not everything?”” he repeated.
Vanessa looked at him.
“I meant personal documents.””
Richard's expression remained neutral.
“I've spoken with the physician's office. They haven't yet confirmed the document's origin, but they've escalated the request to their records administrator. We need to preserve every version of the submitted statement.””
Michael rubbed his forehead.
“What happens if someone really used this to sell my house?””
“The title company has placed the transaction on hold while the dispute is investigated,” Richard said.
“We'll submit a formal challenge to the medical statement and seek confirmation directly from the physician. If the document was fabricated or used fraudulently, that will be important evidence.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You're all acting as though I've committed some terrible crime.””
Michael looked at her.
“Then help us establish what happened.””
She said nothing.
Richard removed a business card from his wallet and handed it to Michael.
“I want you to document every suspicious contact and avoid signing anything you haven't independently verified. I'll coordinate with the appropriate authorities.””
Vanessa stared at the card.
“Authorities?””
“Given the apparent forged signature and disputed medical statement, a formal report may be necessary.””
She took a sharp breath.
“This is my house, too!””
Richard replied carefully.
“Your rights concerning the property will be determined by the applicable records and law. But no one should complete a disputed sale based on documents whose authenticity is in question.””
Michael looked at Malik.
“Did Vanessa tell you anything else about the sale?””
Malik nodded slowly.
“She said the money would be divided after the closing. She said she had already made arrangements for herself and the kids.””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“What kids?””
“Your sister's kids,” Malik said.
“You told me they were going to stay with you after you moved.””
Michael frowned.
“Where were you planning to move?””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“Somewhere more appropriate.””
“With what money?””
“The proceeds from the house.””
Michael felt his stomach tighten.
“So you had a plan for the money before you had my permission to sell the property?””
“I had a plan for our future.””
“And where was I in that future?””
She stared at him.
“You could have come with me.””
“Could have?””
Vanessa's voice grew defensive.
“You've been impossible lately. You spend all your time working, and when you come home, you sit in your office. I wanted a fresh start.””
“You could have asked for counseling. You could have asked to sell the house. You could have asked me to retire.””
“I knew you'd refuse.””
“So you decided to make the decision for me?””
Her eyes glistened.
“I was tired of being ignored.””
Michael studied her face. There was a time when those words would have broken through his anger. He would have apologized for working late, offered a vacation, promised more dinners together.
But this wasn't about a neglected anniversary or a forgotten date.
Someone had used his identity to prepare a sale agreement. Someone had claimed he was medically incapable of consenting. Someone had tried to make his own son believe he was being forced out of his home because his father had agreed to it.
“I may have failed to give you the attention you wanted,” Michael said.
“That doesn't give you permission to take away my choices.””
Vanessa looked away.
Malik bent to pick up the moving box.
“Leave it,” Michael told him.
“I can take it to the garage.””
“You don't need to leave this house.””
Malik froze.
Vanessa turned toward them.
“Don't make promises you can't keep, Michael. The sale may already be too far along.””
Richard answered before Michael could.
“The transaction is on hold. We have not established that the buyers can legally complete it. We'll challenge the documents and protect the property's status while the investigation proceeds.””
Vanessa's expression became calculating.
She walked toward the console table, picked up a framed photograph of herself and Michael at their tenth anniversary dinner, and examined it.
“Do you remember that night?”” she asked.
Michael didn't respond.
“You told me I was the best thing that had ever happened to you.””
“I remember.””
“You said we'd build a life together.””
“We did.””
“Then how can you stand there and treat me like a criminal?””
Michael looked at the photograph in her hands.
“Because I don't know what you've done, and you won't tell me the truth.””
She placed the frame down harder than necessary. The glass rattled.
“Fine,” she said.
“Call the police. Call the newspapers. Tell everyone your wife is a monster.””
“Vanessa—”
“No. You want a fight? You'll get one.””
She turned and marched toward the hallway.
Richard stepped aside to let her pass, then spoke quietly to Michael.
“Don't engage in a confrontation. Keep the original documents secure, and let me handle communications concerning the sale.””
Michael nodded.
When Vanessa disappeared into the kitchen, Malik finally exhaled.
“I'm sorry,” he said.
Michael turned toward him.
“For what?””
“For not telling you sooner. For not finding better proof.””
Michael put a hand on his son's shoulder.
“You shouldn't have had to investigate your own family just to be heard.””
Malik's eyes reddened.
“I thought you'd believe her.””
Michael felt the full weight of that sentence.
He had spent years telling his son that trust mattered. Yet when trust had required him to listen, he had demanded evidence instead.
“I should have listened the first time,” Michael said.
“I'm listening now.””
For the first time that morning, Malik allowed himself to lean into his father's hand.
Then Richard's phone rang again.
He answered, listened, and asked the caller to repeat the information.
His expression changed.
“Understood,” he said.
“Please send the confirmation directly to my office, and preserve the original records.””
He ended the call.
Michael straightened.
“What is it?””
“The physician's office has found a problem with the medical statement.””
“What kind of problem?””
“According to the preliminary information they provided, Dr. Brooks did not conduct the examination described in the document. His office is checking whether the signature and clinic records were misused.””
Malik looked at Vanessa's empty place in the hallway.
“So someone made it up.””
“That's what we need to establish,” Richard replied.
“But the discrepancy is serious.””
Michael glanced toward the kitchen.
Vanessa had not returned.
A few seconds later, her footsteps sounded on the wooden floor. She emerged carrying a small overnight bag, her handbag hanging from her shoulder.
Michael stared at the luggage.
“Where are you going?””
“I'm leaving until you calm down.””
“You can leave if you choose. But the disputed documents and property records need to remain available for the investigation.””
She stopped beside the front door.
“You think you've won something today?””
“No,” Michael said.
“I think I've discovered how little I know about my own marriage.””
Her face twisted.
“Don't pretend you were a perfect husband.””
“I never claimed to be.””
“Then maybe you should ask yourself why I felt I had to do this.””
Michael held her gaze.
“I will ask myself every question I need to. But you still have to answer for the documents.””
Vanessa pulled the door open.
Bright daylight spilled across the foyer. She stepped outside, then turned back one last time.
“You'll regret humiliating me.””
The door slammed.
Malik flinched.
Richard moved toward the window, watching Vanessa cross the driveway. She placed the overnight bag in her car, sat behind the wheel, and remained there for several seconds before driving away.
Michael stood still until the sound of the engine disappeared.
Then he looked at his son.
“Are you all right?””
Malik gave a small, uncertain nod.
“I think so.””
Michael pulled him into an embrace. Malik resisted for half a second, as though he wasn't sure he was allowed to need his father anymore.
Then he wrapped both arms around him.
The moving box sat abandoned between them.
For the first time in weeks, Malik wasn't preparing to leave.
Richard quietly gathered the receipts and placed them inside his briefcase.
“We still have work to do,” he said.
“The property transfer, the medical statement, and the financial transactions need to be investigated separately. We shouldn't assume we've uncovered the entire scheme.””
Michael released his son.
“What else could there be?””
Richard hesitated.
“The compliance officer mentioned an additional account listed in the sale paperwork. It isn't one of your known household accounts, and we need to establish who controls it.””
Michael frowned.
“An account for what?””
“The proceeds were not supposed to go directly into your joint account. The document directs them to a separate account under a business name.””
“Which business?””
Richard opened the folder again.
He turned the final page toward Michael.
At the bottom was the name of the company that had received the unexplained payments.
*Carter Residential Consulting, LLC.*
Michael stared at the name.
He had never heard of it.
Then Malik leaned over his father's shoulder, read the registered manager's name, and stepped backward as if the floor had shifted beneath him.
“Dad,” he whispered.
“That's why she was in your office.””
Michael looked at the line beneath the company name.
The registered manager wasn't Vanessa.
It was someone Malik knew.
Someone who had been inside their home many times.
May you like
Someone who had helped Vanessa convince him that his father had agreed to sell the house.
And when Malik finally spoke the name aloud, Michael realized the betrayal might reach far beyond his marriage.
