Chapter 3: The Husband Who Thought He Owned the Hotel

Twenty minutes later, the glass entrance doors slid open.

A man in a dark designer suit strode into the Grand Meridian.

Gregory Harrington was fifty-three, with expensive silver cuff links, a gold watch, and the confident expression of someone accustomed to having employees move out of his way.

Two men followed him.

One carried a leather briefcase.

The other was his personal assistant.

Celeste rushed toward him.

“Gregory!””

He opened his arms.

“What happened?””

Celeste pointed across the lobby.

“That man is humiliating me.””

Gregory's eyes followed her finger.

He noticed Richard Whitmore standing near the windows.

For half a second, his expression changed.

Then he recovered.

“Who is he?””

Celeste lowered her voice.

“Apparently, he's this woman's father. He came in here and started threatening everyone.””

Gregory straightened his jacket.

“Don't worry. I'll handle it.””

He walked toward Richard with the practiced confidence of a man who believed money could solve any problem.

“Excuse me.””

Richard turned.

Gregory extended his hand.

“Gregory Harrington. I understand there's been some confusion.””

Richard looked at the offered hand.

Then at Gregory.

“Richard Whitmore.””

Gregory's hand stopped halfway.

He recognized the name immediately.

Everyone in the luxury hospitality industry knew Richard Whitmore.

Gregory slowly lowered his arm.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

Richard nodded.

“Mr. Harrington.””

Gregory glanced toward Celeste.

“I'm sure we can resolve whatever misunderstanding has occurred.””

Richard pointed toward Vanessa.

“My daughter was slapped in your wife's presence.””

Gregory frowned.

“My wife?””

“Yes.””

Celeste immediately stepped forward.

“Gregory, I told you. She walked into me.””

Richard didn't raise his voice.

“I watched the security recording.””

Gregory looked toward Jonathan.

“What recording?””

Jonathan held up the tablet.

“The lobby camera footage.””

Gregory's expression tightened.

“Well, then, I suppose we should review it before jumping to conclusions.””

“That's already been done,” Richard replied.

Gregory turned toward his wife.

“Celeste, what happened?””

She threw up her hands.

“This is absurd. The woman practically attacked me.””

Vanessa stood beside her father, holding Noah.

Her cheek was still red.

“That's not what happened.””

Gregory glanced at her.

“I'm sure you're upset, but there's no need to exaggerate.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Did you just hear yourself?””

He frowned.

“Excuse me?””

“You haven't even asked if my baby is okay.””

Gregory looked uncomfortable.

“I'm trying to understand the situation.””

Richard gestured toward the tablet.

“Then understand it.””

Jonathan pressed play.

The footage began again.

Everyone watched.

Celeste approached Vanessa.

The slap.

The fall.

The crying baby.

The manager's arrival.

The accusations.

The demand that Vanessa leave.

When the recording ended, the lobby was silent.

Gregory looked at his wife.

“Celeste?””

She crossed her arms.

“I was frustrated.””

“You hit her?””

“She was disrespectful!””

“She was holding a baby!””

Celeste's mouth tightened.

“Oh, don't start acting like she's some innocent angel. You should have seen how she looked at me.””

Gregory rubbed his forehead.

“Celeste, that's enough.””

She stared at him.

“Are you taking her side?””

“I'm looking at a video.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Your wife struck my daughter while she was holding her newborn. Your wife then insulted her, and the hotel manager attempted to remove the victim instead of investigating the incident.””

Gregory looked toward Marcus.

“Is that true?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Sir, I was trying to de-escalate the situation.””

Richard's voice remained even.

“By ordering the injured woman out?””

“I didn't have all the information.””

“You didn't bother to get it.””

Marcus looked down.

Gregory turned toward Jonathan.

“Listen, I understand the situation looks bad. But Celeste has been a loyal guest here for years. Surely there's a way to handle this without creating a scandal.””

Richard studied him.

“Are you asking me to ignore what happened?””

“I'm asking you to be reasonable.””

Richard nodded.

“Then let's be reasonable.””

He gestured toward the security footage.

“The recording will be preserved. The witnesses will be interviewed. The medical condition of my daughter and grandson will be documented. And the hotel's response will be independently reviewed.””

Gregory's face tightened.

“Independently?””

“Yes.””

“You're making this sound like a criminal investigation.””

“I'm making it sound like a serious incident.””

Celeste stepped forward.

“Gregory, tell him who we are!””

Gregory ignored her.

He turned toward Richard.

“My family has relationships with this company. We have invested a considerable amount of money in hospitality projects.””

Richard looked at him.

“I know.””

“Then you understand that this kind of public confrontation could damage everyone.””

Richard gave a small nod.

“Are you concerned about the damage to my daughter's face, or the damage to your wife's reputation?””

Gregory didn't answer.

Vanessa shifted Noah against her shoulder.

“Dad, can we please go?””

Richard looked at her.

“Of course.””

But as he turned, Gregory spoke again.

“Mr. Whitmore, perhaps we should discuss this privately.””

Richard stopped.

“Why?””

“Because business relationships are involved.””

Richard looked at Jonathan.

“Is there any business relationship that gives a guest permission to assault another guest?””

“No, sir.””

“Does any investment agreement allow staff to discriminate against guests?””

“No, sir.””

Richard looked back at Gregory.

“Then I don't see what there is to discuss privately.””

Celeste's expression hardened.

“This is unbelievable. You can't just destroy our reputation because of one slap!””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“One slap?””

Celeste looked at her.

“Yes. One slap. People make mistakes.””

Vanessa glanced at Noah.

“My son was in my arms. I fell onto a marble floor. Your manager told me to leave. And you still haven't apologized.””

Celeste scoffed.

“I'm not apologizing for defending myself.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Then I have nothing else to say to you.””

Richard placed a reassuring hand on her back.

“Jonathan, please arrange a private room for my daughter and grandson. I also want a doctor to examine them.””

“Certainly, sir.””

“And Marcus?””

The manager straightened.

“Yes?””

“Don't contact any witness about changing their statement. Don't delete anything. Don't alter any recording. Cooperate fully with the review.””

Marcus nodded quickly.

“Of course.””

Gregory took a step forward.

“Richard, I really think you're making a mistake.””

Richard looked at him.

“Perhaps.””

Then he turned to Jonathan.

“There's one more thing.””

Jonathan waited.

Richard pointed toward the reception desk.

“I want the complete ownership and management records for this property brought to my office.””

Jonathan nodded.

“Of course.””

Celeste laughed.

“Why? Are you planning to buy the hotel?””

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa.

“Sweetheart, remember when I told you that this hotel was one of the places I wanted to show you someday?””

Vanessa frowned.

“Yes.””

She glanced around the lobby.

“Why?””

Richard turned toward Jonathan.

“Would you explain something to Mr. and Mrs. Harrington?””

Jonathan looked uncertain.

“Sir?””

Richard nodded toward Gregory.

“Tell them who owns the controlling interest in this property.””

Jonathan took a breath.

“Whitmore Hospitality owns the controlling interest in the Grand Meridian. The parent company is Whitmore Global Holdings.””

Gregory's face went pale.

Celeste looked confused.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

Jonathan continued.

“Mr. Richard Whitmore is the chairman and principal owner.””

For the first time, nobody spoke.

Celeste looked at Richard.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at Richard.

Her fingers tightened around the handle of her handbag.

Gregory slowly turned toward his wife.

“Celeste…”

She whispered:

“You never told me.””

Richard didn't smile.

He simply looked at them.

“My daughter didn't come here to announce who her father was. She came here to spend an afternoon with her baby.””

He paused.

“And that should have been enough.””

Jonathan lowered his eyes.

Gregory's assistant quietly stepped backward.

Marcus looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath his feet.

But Richard wasn't finished.

He turned to Jonathan.

“Now, there's something else I want to know.””

“Yes, sir?””

Richard glanced at the reception desk, then at Marcus.

“Who approved the original management contract for this hotel?””

Jonathan hesitated.

“Your daughter, actually.””

Vanessa looked up.

“Me?””

Richard nodded.

“Remember the hospitality division you helped me evaluate last year?””

Her eyes widened.

“Dad…”

Jonathan opened his folder.

“Ms. Whitmore signed the final recommendation for the current management structure. Her approval is part of the ownership records.””

Celeste's face went completely still.

She had spent the afternoon insulting the very woman whose signature had helped determine who managed the hotel.

Marcus swallowed.

“Ms. Whitmore…”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Please don't call me that now because you know my last name.””

He lowered his head.

Richard looked toward his daughter.

“Would you like to decide what happens next?””

Vanessa looked at the manager.

Then at Celeste.

Then at the frightened little face peeking out from Noah's blanket.

She took a slow breath.

“I don't want revenge, Dad.””

Richard nodded.

“What do you want?””

Vanessa looked directly at Marcus.

“I want every mother who walks through those doors to be treated like a human being. Whether she's wearing designer clothes or carrying everything she owns in a grocery bag.””

She looked at Celeste.

“And I want an apology. Not because my father owns anything. Because what you did was wrong.””

Celeste opened her mouth.

But before she could respond, Jonathan's assistant hurried into the lobby holding a printed document.

“Mr. Reed,” he said urgently.

“There's a problem with the management records.””

Jonathan took the document.

His eyes moved across the first page.

Then the second.

Finally, he looked at Richard.

“Sir, there's something you need to see. This isn't just about the incident today.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“What is it?””

Jonathan lowered his voice.

“The previous management team received multiple complaints about discrimination involving Mrs. Harrington. And someone instructed staff to close those complaints without investigation.””

Vanessa looked at her father.

Celeste suddenly stopped moving.

Gregory whispered:

“Jonathan, don't.””

But Jonathan was already turning the document toward Richard.

At the bottom of the page was a signature.

May you like

A signature that could change everything.

And it belonged to someone standing right there in the lobby.
