Chapter 8: The Person Lauren Feared

Marcus arrived at Daniel's office before nine the following morning.

He had barely slept. Lauren's letter was in his briefcase, along with the scanned memorandum and every document Vanessa had shown him.

Daniel was already waiting.

Beside him sat a woman in her early sixties with silver-framed glasses and a leather portfolio resting on her lap.

"Marcus," Daniel said, standing.

"This is Patricia Cole. She handled the original estate planning for Lauren.""

Patricia offered her hand.

"I'm sorry we're meeting under these circumstances.""

Marcus shook it.

"Please tell me why Lauren's memorandum names someone as a potential threat to Maya's interests.""

Patricia exchanged a glance with Daniel.

"Before I answer, I need to clarify that the memorandum was not an accusation of criminal conduct. Lauren was concerned about a pattern of financial pressure within the extended family. She wanted safeguards in place.""

"Whose name did she identify?""

Patricia opened her portfolio and placed a copy of the memorandum on the table.

Marcus looked down.

The name was unmistakable.

His older brother, Adrian Reed.

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't move.

Adrian was fifty, a real estate developer who had helped Marcus secure financing when his construction company was still small. He had been a groomsman at Marcus's first wedding and had carried Maya around the hospital after she was born.

When Lauren died, Adrian had stood beside Marcus at the funeral and promised that he would help raise Maya if anything happened to him.

Marcus had believed him.

"What did Adrian do?"" he asked.

Patricia folded her hands.

"Lauren became concerned about several requests he made concerning the family business and the estate. She believed he was trying to persuade you to restructure certain assets in ways that could affect Maya's inheritance.""

"Why?""

"He wanted to consolidate ownership of several properties and investment accounts. Lauren worried that the arrangements could give other people influence over assets intended for Maya.""

Marcus stared at the memorandum.

"Did Adrian try to take money from her?""

"We have no evidence that he did. We have correspondence showing that he proposed changes Lauren rejected. She then asked for stronger protections.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"There's more. We reviewed the archived records last night. The person who contacted Vanessa about Lauren's estate appears to have had access to information originally held by Adrian's business office.""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"So Adrian told Vanessa about the trust?""

"We can't establish that conclusively yet," Daniel said.

"But we found an email from Adrian to Vanessa dated fourteen months ago. It refers to Lauren's estate planning and suggests that Vanessa review the household's long-term financial arrangements.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Why would my brother do that?""

"That's what we need to determine.""

Patricia slid another page toward him.

"This is a copy of the original memorandum. Lauren's concern was that a future spouse or another relative might use financial pressure to influence where Maya lived. She wanted the trust structured so that decisions about Maya's security could not be made casually.""

Marcus read the document slowly.

The language was measured, not dramatic. Lauren had described a series of conversations with Adrian in which he suggested that Maya's inheritance should be consolidated with the family's other assets.

She had refused.

She had also asked that any changes to Maya's trust require independent legal review and direct confirmation from Marcus.

The final paragraph explained why she had included Evelyn as a safeguard.

Lauren had wanted someone who would put Maya's interests first if Marcus were ever too overwhelmed, ill, or otherwise unable to respond.

Marcus lowered the page.

"Did Adrian know about the protective clause?""

"Yes," Patricia said.

"He received a copy of the memorandum after Lauren's death because he was listed as a potential adviser to the family business. But he wasn't authorized to make decisions about the trust.""

Marcus stared at the wall.

He remembered Adrian offering to help him manage the estate after Lauren died. He remembered signing business documents during the months when grief had made it difficult to concentrate.

He remembered his brother telling him that everything was routine.

Had Adrian been trying to help?

Or had he been trying to gain control of assets that Lauren had specifically protected?

"Can I speak to him?"" Marcus asked.

Daniel nodded.

"You can. But I recommend that you keep the conversation focused on what he knows, rather than making accusations. We'll handle the legal questions separately.""

Marcus took out his phone.

He called Adrian.

His brother answered with his usual confident greeting.

"Marcus. What's going on?""

"I need to see you.""

"Everything all right?""

"No.""

Adrian's tone changed.

"Is Maya okay?""

"She's safe. I need to talk to you about Lauren's estate and your communications with Vanessa.""

Silence.

Then Adrian said, "Where did you hear about that?""

Marcus closed his eyes.

It was the wrong answer.

"I'll see you at your office in an hour.""

Adrian's office occupied the top floor of a commercial building he owned.

When Marcus arrived, his brother was standing beside a wall of windows overlooking the city. He wore a charcoal suit and a watch Marcus had given him for his fiftieth birthday.

Adrian turned as Marcus entered.

"Before you say anything, I need you to understand that I was trying to help.""

Marcus placed the memorandum on his desk.

"Then explain this.""

Adrian glanced at the paper.

His face tightened.

"Where did you get that?""

"From Lauren's estate file.""

"That document was never supposed to be circulated.""

"Lauren wrote it. Why shouldn't I read it?""

Adrian walked around the desk.

"Because it was a private memorandum between her and her attorney. It wasn't a final judgment about anyone.""

"She was concerned about your attempts to restructure Maya's inheritance.""

"I was trying to simplify the family's finances.""

"Why did she refuse?""

"Because she was suspicious of everyone.""

Marcus stared at him.

"She was dying, Adrian. She was trying to protect her daughter.""

"And I was trying to protect the family business.""

"By asking to consolidate assets that belonged to Maya?""

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

"You don't understand how these arrangements work. The family had several properties, several investment accounts, and a business that needed long-term planning. I was trying to prevent everything from becoming fragmented.""

"Then why did you contact Vanessa?""

Adrian's eyes moved toward the window.

"I didn't tell her to do anything to Maya.""

"Did you give her copies of the estate documents?""

"Some summaries.""

"Why?""

"She was your wife. She had a right to understand the family's financial structure.""

"She wasn't authorized to access Maya's confidential records.""

Adrian exhaled sharply.

"Marcus, I never wanted this to become a problem.""

"But it has.""

For the first time, Adrian looked genuinely angry.

"Do you know how much I've done for you? I helped you build your company. I introduced you to investors. I spent years making sure your family had opportunities.""

Marcus felt a bitter laugh rise in his throat.

"Is that what this is about? You think I owe you control over my daughter's future because you helped me build a business?""

"Don't be ridiculous.""

"Then tell me why you gave Vanessa information that she used to pursue changes to Maya's trust.""

Adrian walked behind his desk.

"I didn't know she was going to do that.""

"Did she tell you she wanted Maya out of the house?""

Adrian didn't answer.

Marcus leaned forward.

"Did she?""

"She said she wanted a more stable household arrangement.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means she was unhappy.""

"Did you know she was asking about residential schools?""

Adrian looked away.

Marcus felt his heart pound.

"You knew.""

"I knew she'd been exploring options. I told her that was between you and her.""

"You told her to speak to me?""

"I told her you needed to agree on a plan.""

Marcus stared at his brother.

"An eight-year-old girl doesn't need a plan to make herself disappear. She needs a father who protects her.""

Adrian's face hardened.

"You've always been emotional about Maya. Lauren knew that. She knew you would never make a decision that wasn't centered on her.""

Marcus recoiled.

"She was my wife.""

"And Maya is your daughter. I understand that. But you have a business, a marriage, and a future. You can't let one person determine every decision.""

Marcus stood.

"You mean my child.""

"I mean the family.""

"No. You mean the people who benefit when I stop asking questions.""

Adrian's expression changed.

For a moment, the polished businessman disappeared, and Marcus saw the resentment beneath.

"You think you're the only one who's sacrificed anything?"" Adrian demanded.

"I spent years building a business while you stayed home with Lauren and Maya. I gave up opportunities because I was helping you.""

"You chose to help me. I never asked you to trade that for control.""

Adrian slammed his palm against the desk.

"You wouldn't even have half of what you own if I hadn't helped you.""

Marcus looked at him quietly.

"Then perhaps I should have asked myself why you were so eager to help.""

Adrian went pale.

Marcus gathered the memorandum.

"Daniel will contact you about the records. Don't contact Vanessa about Maya's trust, and don't discuss Lauren's estate with anyone until the attorneys have sorted out what happened.""

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"You think you can threaten me?""

"I'm not threatening you. I'm setting a boundary.""

Marcus walked to the door.

Behind him, Adrian spoke in a low voice.

"You should ask Vanessa why she wanted to know whether Lauren's insurance policy could be challenged.""

Marcus stopped.

He turned slowly.

"What?""

Adrian looked almost satisfied.

"She came to me before the wedding. She wanted to know whether a future spouse could contest certain restrictions in an estate plan.""

Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.

"Did you tell her it was possible?""

"I told her to consult an attorney.""

"Did you help her find one?""

Adrian hesitated.

Then he nodded.

"Yes.""

Marcus stared at his brother.

He had thought Adrian's involvement began after Vanessa entered the marriage.

Now he understood that the connection went back further.

Vanessa had not stumbled across Lauren's protective arrangements by accident.

She had been asking questions before the wedding.

And Adrian had helped her find someone who could answer them.

Marcus returned to Daniel's office and told him everything.

Daniel immediately began documenting the conversation.

"We'll need to establish exactly what Adrian disclosed and whether Vanessa relied on any inaccurate advice. But this is significant.""

"Can the trust be protected?""

"We can seek to preserve the existing arrangements while we review the records. We can also request that the trustee and administrator restrict changes until the dispute is resolved.""

Marcus nodded.

"Do it.""

Daniel looked at him carefully.

"There's one other development. Vanessa's attorney has submitted a preliminary request concerning the house.""

Marcus stiffened.

"What kind of request?""

"She is asking for temporary exclusive occupancy while the marital dispute is pending. She claims you have threatened to remove her without following the proper process.""

Marcus let out a disbelieving breath.

"She asked me to send Maya to my mother so she could keep the house.""

"I know. We'll present the relevant communications and challenge any inaccurate statements.""

"Can she actually force me out?""

"That depends on the court's assessment of the facts, the applicable law, and the current ownership and occupancy arrangements. We won't speculate. We'll respond with the documentation we have.""

Marcus rubbed his face.

Everything seemed to be happening at once: the trust, the house, the secrets surrounding Lauren's estate, and the possibility that Vanessa had been planning these changes before their wedding.

He wanted to go home and sit with Maya.

He wanted to stop thinking about attorneys, documents, and people who seemed to view his daughter as a financial inconvenience.

But he knew that ignoring the paperwork wouldn't protect her.

"Daniel," he said, "I want a complete review of everything Vanessa and Adrian have accessed. Every document, every request, every email.""

"We'll start immediately.""

"And I want to know whether any of Lauren's protected assets have been changed.""

Daniel nodded.

"We'll verify the account records directly with the relevant institutions.""

Marcus left the office feeling exhausted.

At a traffic light, he called Evelyn.

"How's Maya?""

"She's drawing pictures at the kitchen table," Evelyn replied.

"She asked whether you'll be home for dinner.""

"I'll be there.""

"Marcus, there's something else you should know.""

He gripped the steering wheel.

"What now?""

"Evelyn hesitated.

"Maya asked me whether her mother left her anything.""

Marcus swallowed.

"What did you tell her?""

"I told her that Lauren left her many things. Photographs, letters, memories. And that some of those things were meant to help her when she was older.""

Marcus looked through the windshield.

"That's true.""

"There's a small box of Lauren's personal belongings here. I haven't opened it because I thought you should decide when Maya is ready.""

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

"Keep it safe. I'll come by tonight.""

When he arrived at Evelyn's house, Maya was sitting at the table, surrounded by crayons and paper.

She jumped up.

"Daddy!""

He hugged her and kissed her forehead.

"Hey, sweetheart. What are you drawing?""

"A picture for Mommy.""

He looked at the paper.

It showed a woman with long brown hair standing beside a little girl in a pale-blue dress. Above them, Maya had drawn a yellow sun.

Marcus sat beside her.

"That's beautiful.""

"I don't remember her face very well," Maya admitted.

"But Grandma says I have her smile.""

Marcus's eyes filled.

"You do.""

Maya looked at him.

"Can we put the picture in Mommy's box?""

"Of course.""

She returned to her drawing.

Then she asked, almost casually, "Daddy, if Mommy left me something, does that mean she knew I would need it?""

Marcus looked at his daughter.

He thought of Lauren's letter, the protective trust, and the years of careful planning that had been hidden inside legal files.

"Yes, baby," he said softly.

"I think she wanted to make sure you'd always have something that belonged to you.""

Maya nodded.

Then she went back to coloring.

Marcus sat beside her, listening to the scratch of the crayons against paper.

For the first time in days, the future seemed less like a battle he had to win and more like a life he could still build with his daughter.

But that hope was interrupted when Daniel called again.

"Marcus, we found something in the account records.""

"What?""

"One of the protected investment accounts was used as collateral in a business transaction several years ago. The records suggest the arrangement may have been released, but we need to verify that directly.""

Marcus stood.

"Whose business transaction?""

Daniel paused.

"An entity connected to Adrian.""

Marcus looked at Maya.

She was carefully drawing a heart above her mother's head.

He turned away so she wouldn't see his expression.

"Tell me exactly what that means.""

"It means we need to determine whether Maya's assets were ever exposed to a debt that wasn't hers.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

He had spent the last week discovering how many people had treated his daughter's future as something they could rearrange for their own convenience.

May you like

Now he had to consider whether his brother had placed her inheritance at risk years before Vanessa ever entered their lives.

And if the transaction had not been properly released, the consequences could reach far beyond the marriage.
