Chapter 5: The Invitation That Exposed Everything

Malcolm took the tablet from David.

He read the cancellation request carefully.

Then he looked at Amara.

“Did you receive any messages about your birthday arrangements?””

Amara shook her head.

“No. Everything was confirmed last month.””

“Did anyone ask you to change the date?””

“No.””

“Did anyone tell you the hotel had a problem with the reservation?””

“No, Daddy.””

Malcolm looked at Peter.

“Show me the request.””

Peter opened the hotel's reservation management system.

The screen displayed a private event booking scheduled for the following Saturday.

The event was titled:

*MALCOLM BENNETT — PRIVATE FAMILY CELEBRATION.*

Amara's name appeared as the primary coordinator.

The reservation included the Grand Sterling's largest private ballroom, a separate dining room, two executive suites, and a private reception area.

Below the reservation was a cancellation request.

The reason given was:

Family has reconsidered attendance. Event no longer required.

Malcolm looked at the date.

Three weeks earlier.

The same day the restriction against Naomi had been submitted.

“Who authorized this?””

Peter scrolled down.

“Someone using a guest account linked to Jonathan Whitmore's corporate profile.””

Jonathan's face changed.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Jonathan, don't.””

He turned toward her.

“Did you submit this?””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“Vanessa, that's your account.””

She shook her head.

“People have access to our account.””

Jonathan stared at her.

“Who?””

She didn't answer.

Malcolm handed the tablet back.

“Peter, was the reservation actually canceled?””

“No, sir. The request was flagged because the account holder wasn't the primary event coordinator.””

“Who flagged it?””

Peter checked.

“An employee named Denise Carter.””

Everyone turned toward Denise.

She looked surprised.

“I recognized the event because Miss Bennett had asked me about the flower arrangements.””

Amara nodded.

“I did. I came in to confirm the white roses.””

Denise continued.

“When the cancellation request appeared, I thought it was strange. Miss Bennett had already paid the deposit, and she had personally confirmed the arrangements.””

Peter looked impressed.

“You flagged it?””

“Yes, sir. I sent a message to reservations asking them to verify it.””

Malcolm looked at her.

“And what happened?””

Denise glanced toward Richard.

“My supervisor told me to close the inquiry.””

Richard's head snapped up.

“I never instructed you to close anything.””

Denise looked directly at him.

“You told me not to question Mrs. Whitmore's requests.””

Richard's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This is becoming a conspiracy. Why is everybody suddenly blaming me?””

Jonathan looked at the tablet.

“Because your account submitted the request.””

“Then someone used it!””

“Who?””

Vanessa threw her hands up.

“I don't know!””

Malcolm studied her.

“Mrs. Whitmore, you have spent the evening telling everyone that you know the people who matter. You have repeatedly mentioned your husband's influence. You have used your connections to demand that staff obey you.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“And?””

“And now you claim you have no idea how your own account was used.””

Jonathan rubbed his forehead.

“Vanessa, give me your phone.””

She stared at him.

“Absolutely not.””

“I want to see the account history.””

“You don't have the right to inspect my personal phone.””

Jonathan lowered his voice.

“Then explain the reservation.””

Vanessa looked toward the ballroom.

Several of her friends were standing near the entrance, pretending not to listen.

Her embarrassment was becoming public.

She hated that more than anything.

“You're making me look like a criminal.””

Malcolm answered calmly.

“Nobody has called you a criminal. We're asking questions about records that carry your name.””

Peter interrupted.

“Mr. Bennett, there is another concern.””

Malcolm turned.

“What?””

“The cancellation request wasn't the only unusual activity. Someone also attempted to modify the event's guest list.””

Amara frowned.

“Modify it how?””

Peter brought up the records.

“Several family members were removed from the original list. Three additional guests were added under a corporate sponsorship category.””

Malcolm looked closer.

The names were unfamiliar.

Jonathan leaned toward the screen.

Then he frowned.

“I know two of those people.””

“Who are they?”” Malcolm asked.

“Business associates of mine.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“They were supposed to attend the gala.””

Jonathan turned.

“They weren't on the invitation list.””

“They were important guests.””

“For whose event?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Amara studied the names.

“Why were these people added to my father's birthday celebration?””

Peter checked the audit history.

“The additions were submitted through the same account that requested the cancellation.””

Jonathan looked at Vanessa.

“You were using my account to change a private family guest list?””

Vanessa's voice became sharp.

“I was helping with the event.””

“You weren't invited to organize it.””

“I was trying to improve it!””

Malcolm stared at her.

“You tried to remove my family from my own celebration?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I thought certain people would make the event more appropriate.””

Amara felt a cold sensation move through her stomach.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Don't make me explain something that should be obvious.””

Malcolm stepped forward.

“Explain it.””

Vanessa glanced toward the guests.

Then she spoke.

“Your birthday party was supposed to be an elegant evening. I thought it would be better with the right business people, the right social circle, and a more suitable guest list.””

Amara stared.

“My family was on that list.””

Vanessa shrugged.

“Not everybody belongs at every table.””

Malcolm nodded slowly.

“Interesting.””

Jonathan looked furious.

“You had no authority to do any of this.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“Do you know how many years I've spent helping you build your reputation? Do you know how many important people I have introduced you to?””

Jonathan shook his head.

“This isn't about you.””

“Everything is about the people who make things happen!””

Malcolm looked at Peter.

“Who is listed as the event's final decision-maker?””

“Miss Bennett.””

“And who has authority to change that?””

“Only the primary coordinator, unless a verified amendment is approved by Mr. Bennett's office.””

Malcolm nodded.

“Then restore the original guest list and lock the account.””

Peter immediately began typing.

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Wait.””

Malcolm looked at her.

“What?””

“You can't lock Jonathan's account.””

“Why not?””

“Because he has business dealings here.””

Jonathan stared at her.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She ignored him.

“Your company and ours have been discussing a major partnership. Surely you're not going to jeopardize that over a personal disagreement?””

Malcolm's expression remained unreadable.

“What partnership?””

Jonathan looked uncomfortable.

“Malcolm, we have been discussing a proposed investment in one of our development projects.””

“Has an agreement been signed?””

“No.””

“Has money changed hands?””

“No.””

“Then there is no partnership to jeopardize.””

Jonathan nodded.

“That's correct.””

Vanessa looked at him in disbelief.

“Jonathan!””

He turned away.

Amara watched her father carefully.

He wasn't shouting.

He wasn't threatening anybody.

He was simply allowing the facts to speak.

That was something she had learned from him years earlier.

People who depended on intimidation often became uncomfortable when someone refused to be intimidated.

A hotel employee approached Peter and whispered something.

Peter looked toward the entrance.

“Mr. Bennett, there's another person asking to see you.””

“Who?””

“Your personal event coordinator.””

Amara blinked.

“Why is she here?””

Peter checked his phone.

“Apparently, she received a message that the birthday celebration had been canceled.””

Amara shook her head.

“That can't be right.””

“She's waiting outside.””

“Bring her in.””

A moment later, a woman in her early forties entered the foyer.

She carried a black folder and looked distressed.

Her name was Patricia Mills.

She had organized Malcolm's private events for nearly eight years.

“Mr. Bennett,” she said quickly.

“I'm sorry to interrupt, but I need to confirm something.””

Malcolm nodded.

“Go ahead.””

Patricia opened the folder.

“Someone contacted me this afternoon claiming the family celebration had been canceled. They instructed me to stop all vendor deliveries and return the deposits.””

Amara stared at her.

“Who contacted you?””

Patricia hesitated.

“The request came from an email address connected to the Whitmore Foundation.””

Jonathan turned sharply.

“The foundation?””

Vanessa's face went pale.

Patricia nodded.

“Yes. The message was signed by someone claiming to be authorized by Mr. Whitmore.””

Jonathan took the folder.

He read the printed email.

Then he looked at his wife.

“I didn't send this.””

Vanessa looked away.

Patricia continued.

“The sender also asked me to redirect the floral budget to a different event account.””

Malcolm's eyes narrowed.

“Did you transfer anything?””

“No, sir. I called Amara to verify the cancellation, but she didn't answer because she was at the hotel.””

Amara took the folder.

The email contained a list of instructions.

Cancel the original event.

Remove the family guests.

Transfer the floral budget.

Change the ballroom arrangements.

And one final sentence:

The new event should be presented as an exclusive business reception hosted by the Whitmore Foundation.

Amara looked up.

“Why would someone turn my father's birthday party into a business reception?””

Jonathan looked sick.

“Because that would have allowed us to use the ballroom for our own fundraising event.””

Malcolm's gaze sharpened.

“Without paying for it?””

Jonathan nodded.

“Apparently.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

“Jonathan, you're making assumptions. This was just a scheduling adjustment.””

He stared at her.

“An unauthorized scheduling adjustment involving someone else's private event?””

“You don't understand how difficult it is to coordinate these things.””

Patricia looked uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Whitmore, you told me that Mr. Bennett had approved the change.””

Vanessa spun toward her.

“I never spoke to you!””

Patricia opened her folder.

“I have the email.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

David moved slightly between them.

“Please remain where you are, ma'am.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“Don't tell me what to do.””

Malcolm looked at Patricia.

“Thank you. Please keep every email and message.””

Patricia nodded.

“Of course.””

Amara handed the folder back.

Her mind was racing.

The restriction against Naomi.

The cancellation request.

The guest list changes.

The attempted transfer of the floral budget.

All of it had happened before tonight.

She looked at Jonathan.

“Did you know your wife was doing this?””

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“Of course you didn't. You never know anything unless someone explains it to you.””

Jonathan turned toward her.

“You used my name.””

“I was helping you.””

“You used my company account to interfere with a private family event.””

“I was making connections!””

Malcolm interrupted.

“Enough.””

Everyone went quiet.

He turned toward Peter.

“I want the hotel records secured. I want the foundation communications preserved. And I want the security footage from every relevant date.””

Peter nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

Malcolm then looked at Jonathan.

“You and I can discuss your company's involvement separately. But tonight, this is about what happened to my daughter and granddaughter.””

Jonathan lowered his head.

“I understand.””

Vanessa looked around.

She could feel the room turning against her.

The people who had smiled at her earlier were now avoiding her eyes.

Her friends were no longer approaching.

Her confidence was disappearing.

Then her phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

Stop talking. They don't know about the original agreement.

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the phone.

She quickly locked the screen.

But Amara had noticed.

“Who was that?””

Vanessa looked up.

“Nobody.””

Amara studied her.

“Are you sure?””

“It's none of your business.””

Jonathan noticed the phone.

“Who are you messaging?””

Vanessa slipped it into her purse.

“Nobody, Jonathan.””

David approached Malcolm.

“Sir, I think we need to examine the original agreement connected to the Whitmore Foundation.””

Malcolm turned.

“What agreement?””

David looked at Jonathan.

“The document that gave Mrs. Whitmore access to the hotel's private guest services account.””

Jonathan frowned.

“I thought that was just a standard event sponsorship arrangement.””

David shook his head.

“There's an additional authorization attached.””

He opened the document.

Then he stopped.

“Mr. Bennett, this is unusual.””

Malcolm looked at the screen.

“What?””

David lowered his voice.

“The agreement contains a clause allowing the foundation to request guest exclusions during sponsored events.””

Malcolm's eyes narrowed.

“Who approved that?””

David looked at the signature.

“Your former operations director.””

Malcolm stared at the name.

Then he looked toward Vanessa.

And for the first time that evening, she smiled.

Because she had just realized something.

Malcolm had discovered the hotel's internal records.

May you like

But he hadn't discovered the person who had given her access in the first place.

And that person was still working for him.
