Chapter 1: The Voice on the Stairs

“You keep whispering my name outside my room!””

Maya’s voice cracked through the living room.

Her finger pointed directly at her older brother, Jordan, who stood beside the couch wearing his green varsity jacket. His eyebrows pulled together, and he stared at her as if she had just accused him of something impossible.

“I never did that!”” Jordan snapped.

Their mother, Denise, immediately moved between them. She wrapped one arm around Maya’s shoulders, pulling her closer.

“She heard your voice,” Denise said firmly.

Jordan threw both hands into the air.

“That doesn’t mean it was me!””

Across the room, their father, Marcus, lowered the television remote. He had been watching the late-night news, but the argument had made him turn around.

“Enough,” Marcus said, raising one hand.

“What exactly did it say?””

Nobody answered immediately.

The living room suddenly seemed much quieter.

The wall clock above the fireplace continued ticking.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Maya swallowed.

“It says my name,” she whispered.

Denise rubbed her shoulder.

“Baby, tell your father what happened.””

Maya looked toward the staircase.

“It happens almost every night.””

Jordan shook his head.

“That's ridiculous. I sleep downstairs half the time when I’m playing video games. I’ve never gone near your room.””

“You don't have to lie,” Maya whispered.

“I’m not lying!””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Jordan, let her finish.””

Jordan's jaw tightened. He looked genuinely offended, but there was something else in his expression now.

Uneasiness.

Maya noticed it.

She had been thirteen for three months, and her brother was seventeen. Normally, Jordan enjoyed teasing her. He stole her snacks, borrowed her phone charger, and occasionally knocked on her bedroom door just to run away.

But this wasn't a prank.

Three nights earlier, she had heard someone whisper her name from the hallway.

At first, she thought it was Jordan.

She had opened her bedroom door, expecting to find him laughing.

The hallway had been empty.

Then the voice came again.

"Maya...""

It sounded exactly like Jordan.

Except it came from behind her.

She had turned around so quickly that her neck hurt.

Nobody was inside her room.

The next night, the same thing happened.

And the night after that.

Each time, the voice sounded closer.

On the fourth night, it had whispered something that made her sleep with the lights on until morning.

Come outside.

Now, standing beside her mother, Maya felt the same cold sensation spreading through her arms.

Marcus crouched slightly so he could look directly into her face.

“Did you actually see Jordan outside your door?””

“No.””

“Did you see anybody?””

Maya shook her head.

“Then why are you blaming him?”” Jordan asked.

“Because it sounds like you!””

Jordan opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Denise looked at him.

“Have you been messing with your sister?””

“No, Mom.””

“Think carefully.””

“I said no!””

Marcus exhaled slowly.

“Everybody calm down. We’re going upstairs together. We’ll check the hallway, check Maya’s room, and then we’re going to bed.””

Maya grabbed her mother's sleeve.

“No.””

Marcus paused.

“What do you mean, no?””

“I don't want to go up there.””

“Sweetheart, nobody is asking you to go alone.””

Maya shook her head harder.

“You don't understand.””

Denise lowered herself beside her.

“Then help us understand.””

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

“Last night, I locked my door. I heard somebody walking outside. Then the handle started moving.””

Jordan's expression changed.

“What?””

Maya nodded.

“I thought it was you, so I said your name.””

“And?””

“You answered.””

Jordan slowly looked at his mother.

“I was asleep.””

Maya continued.

“You said, ‘Open the door, Maya.’”

Marcus frowned.

“Did you recognize the voice?””

She nodded.

“It sounded like Jordan.””

Jordan stepped backward.

“That's not funny.””

“I know!””

“Why didn't you tell Mom?””

“I did!””

Denise looked down.

The memory seemed to hit her.

Maya had mentioned hearing something outside her bedroom earlier in the week. Denise had assumed it was a nightmare. She had even checked the locks and told Maya that old houses made strange noises at night.

Now she wished she had taken her daughter more seriously.

Marcus stood.

“Okay. That's enough. Nobody is going upstairs until I check the house.””

He walked toward the staircase.

Jordan followed.

Denise kept Maya close.

The staircase was visible from the living room, rising toward the dark second floor. A small lamp illuminated the first few steps, but the upper landing disappeared into shadow.

Marcus stopped at the bottom.

“Jordan, stay here with your mother.””

Jordan frowned.

“Dad, I'm coming with you.””

“No. Stay with them.””

Marcus placed one foot on the first step.

Then he heard something.

A faint sound.

Almost like someone dragging their fingertips along the upstairs wall.

Scrrrr...

He stopped.

“Did you hear that?”” Marcus asked.

Denise nodded slowly.

Jordan stared toward the ceiling.

“What was that?””

Marcus didn't answer.

He took another step.

The wooden staircase creaked beneath his weight.

Then, from somewhere above them, a voice floated down.

“Maya...””

Everyone froze.

It was barely louder than a breath.

But every person in the living room heard it.

Maya's hand tightened around Denise's sleeve.

Jordan's face went pale.

The voice sounded like a young girl.

Soft.

Almost affectionate.

But it carried a strange echo, as if it had traveled through a long, empty tunnel before reaching them.

Marcus slowly turned his head toward the upstairs hallway.

“Who's there?””

Silence.

Then the voice returned.

“Come upstairs...””

Jordan stumbled backward.

“That wasn't me.””

Nobody accused him this time.

Marcus raised his hand.

“Nobody move.””

The wall clock kept ticking.

Denise pulled Maya behind her.

At the top of the staircase, the bedroom door stood slightly open.

A thin line of pale light stretched across the floorboards.

Maya stared at it.

Her lips parted.

“That's my room.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

“Your bedroom light is on?””

“I turned it off.””

“Are you sure?””

Maya nodded.

“I always turn it off before I come downstairs.””

A faint electrical buzz came from above.

The light flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then it steadied.

Marcus took one cautious step toward the stairs.

“Stay together,” he whispered.

Jordan reached for his father's arm.

“Dad, don't.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Jordan swallowed.

“I heard something else.””

“What did you hear?””

Jordan pointed toward the upper landing.

“Someone breathing.””

They listened.

For several seconds, there was nothing.

Then a faint inhale drifted down the staircase.

And an exhale.

Slow.

Deliberate.

As if someone were standing just outside Maya's bedroom door.

Denise covered her mouth.

Maya began trembling.

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“I'm calling the police.””

Before he could unlock the screen, the upstairs light buzzed again.

A sharp electrical pop cracked through the house.

The bulb flickered.

The hallway went dark.

And from the darkness came a whisper.

This time, it wasn't calling Maya.

It was calling Marcus.

“Daddy...””

Marcus stopped breathing.

May you like

Because the voice sounded exactly like Maya.

And Maya was standing right beside him.
