Chapter 9: The $180,000 Nobody Was Supposed to Touch
Dad read the document twice.
Then he placed it flat on the table and looked at Emily.
“Your mother left you one hundred and eighty thousand dollars?””
Emily nodded.
“The money came from a life insurance policy and a trust my stepfather established before he died. My aunt managed it while I was growing up. When I turned eighteen, I gained access to the account, but some of the funds remained under professional administration.””
“Why didn't you tell me about this earlier?””
“Because I didn't know you existed until a few months ago. And I didn't know Vanessa had anything to do with it until I found the records.””
Dad's jaw tightened.
“What did she try to do?””
Emily opened the folder and showed him the request.
The document was dated six months earlier. It asked the trust administrator to release information about the beneficiary's identity, current assets, and eligibility for certain benefits.
Vanessa had signed it.
But there was another detail.
The request claimed she was acting as a representative of David Reed, the beneficiary's biological father.
Dad stared at the page.
“I never authorized this.””
Emily nodded.
“I know. I contacted the trust administrator after they asked me to verify some information. They told me someone had attempted to obtain access to my records.””
“Did they release anything?””
“Some general information, but no money. They refused to transfer funds without my consent and proper documentation.””
Dad exhaled slowly.
“Thank God.””
I looked at the document.
“Why would Vanessa try to access your trust?””
Emily hesitated.
“I don't know everything. But I think she wanted to find out whether I had enough money to help Daniel.””
Dad's face hardened.
“Daniel?””
“Her son.””
Emily looked between us.
“She contacted me shortly after I emailed her. She said she wanted to help reunite me with my father, but she needed me to understand that our family had financial problems.””
Dad shook his head.
“She told you about our debts?””
“Yes. She said your house was at risk and that Daniel was facing a legal crisis. She asked whether I would consider helping once we established our relationship.””
I felt anger flare in my chest.
“She asked you for money before you even met Dad?””
Emily nodded.
“She said it would be a loan. She promised I'd be repaid after the house was sold.””
Dad closed his eyes.
The house again.
Vanessa had woven the supposed sale into every lie. She had told Daniel it was happening, told the real estate agent she was preparing it, and apparently told Emily that the proceeds would help resolve the family's debts.
She had been building a financial story in which everyone else's money was already hers.
“Did you give her anything?”” Dad asked.
“No.””
Emily's answer was firm.
“She asked for five thousand dollars as a temporary loan. I said I needed time to think about it. Then she asked for my bank information so she could prepare a transfer agreement.””
Dad stared at her.
“Did you give it to her?””
“No. I contacted the trust administrator first. That's when I learned she had already made inquiries about my account.””
Dad took a slow breath.
“I'm sorry she involved you in this.””
Emily looked down.
“I almost believed her.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew details about you. She knew where you worked, what neighborhood you lived in, and that you had a son named Marcus. She said she'd been your wife for years and was trying to protect everyone.””
Emily paused.
“She also told me you might not accept me if I appeared without warning.””
Dad's eyes filled again.
“I would have wanted to know.””
“I believe you now.””
The simple words seemed to ease something in him.
Dad looked at the trust document.
“Did your mother leave anything explaining why Vanessa was involved?””
Emily reached into the folder and removed a small, yellowed envelope.
“This was with the original letter. My aunt gave it to me last month when I told her I had located you.””
Dad recognized the handwriting immediately.
He opened it.
Inside was a short note from Rachel, dated shortly before her death.
Vanessa has agreed to help me contact David. I have explained that I am not asking for money or trying to interfere in his marriage. Emily deserves to know her father, even if he cannot become part of her life.
Dad stopped reading.
Below that, Rachel had written another paragraph.
I am afraid Vanessa does not understand that my daughter's future is not a threat to hers. If she refuses to deliver this letter, please make sure Emily knows I tried.
Dad lowered the note.
Emily's voice softened.
“My mother knew Vanessa might not help.””
Dad shook his head slowly.
“She trusted her anyway.””
“People trust the people they hope will do the right thing.””
Dad looked at Emily.
“I'm sorry she was let down.””
Emily reached across the table and touched his hand.
“She wasn't entirely let down. I found you.””
For the first time that afternoon, Dad smiled.
It was a small, broken smile, but it was real.
Then his phone rang.
The screen showed Vanessa's name.
He stared at it for a moment before answering.
“What?””
Her voice came through immediately.
“David, where are you?””
“I'm with Emily.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered, “You found her.””
“Yes.””
“Did she tell you about the trust?””
Dad's expression changed.
“You already know about the trust?””
“I knew Rachel had arranged something for her.””
“Did you try to access it?””
“No.””
Emily leaned closer to the phone.
“Mrs. Cole, I have the document you submitted to the trust administrator.””
Vanessa went quiet.
Emily continued.
“It says you were acting as my father's representative.””
“I was trying to help.””
“You never asked me for permission to represent me.””
“I didn't need your permission to make an inquiry.””
“You requested confidential financial information.””
“I was trying to understand the situation.””
Dad cut in.
“Stop. You will not contact Emily again about money or legal matters.””
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
“You can't tell me who I can speak to.””
“I can tell you that you are not authorized to act on my behalf, and I never gave you permission to act on hers.””
“David, listen to me. You're being manipulated.””
He stared at the phone.
“By whom?””
“Emily. She knows you feel guilty. She's using the situation to get close to you.””
Emily's face went pale.
Dad's voice turned cold.
“You have spent three years investigating my past, hidden my daughter's existence, forged my signature, and taken money from my son. Do not sit there and tell me someone else is manipulating me.””
“I was trying to protect you!””
“From your own daughter?””
Vanessa began crying.
“From losing everything we've built!””
Dad looked at Emily.
Then at the trust documents.
“You were never entitled to what Rachel left her daughter.””
“I never said I was!””
“Then why did you try to access it?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Dad continued.
“Tomorrow, I'm meeting with a lawyer. I will be providing every document we have, including the bank statements, the property authorization, the investigation reports, and the trust request.””
“David, please.””
“I will also be asking the bank to review the transactions involving our joint account.””
“You can't do this to me.””
“You did this to yourself.””
He ended the call.
For a while, the three of us sat in silence.
Then Emily asked the question I had been wondering about.
“What will happen to Vanessa?””
Dad looked tired.
“I don't know. That will depend on what the records show and what legal advice I receive.””
Emily nodded.
“I don't want revenge.””
“I understand.””
“I just don't want her using my name to get money.””
“She won't.””
Dad said it with such certainty that I believed him.
We left the café a little after four. Emily had agreed to meet with Dad again after he spoke with the lawyer. She also promised to provide copies of every document she had received from Vanessa.
Before we parted, Dad hugged her.
It was awkward at first. They were strangers trying to embrace a relationship that should have begun years earlier.
Then Emily wrapped her arms around him.
Dad held her tightly.
“I can't give you back the years we lost,” he whispered.
“No,” she replied.
“But we can start now.””
I stood nearby, watching them.
For the first time, I wasn't afraid that Emily would replace me. I could see the same uncertainty in her eyes that I felt in my own.
We were two children of the same father, both trying to understand a family that had changed overnight.
When Emily left, Dad turned to me.
“How do you feel?””
I considered the question.
“Strange.””
He nodded.
“That's fair.””
“I think I want to get to know her.””
His eyes softened.
“Me too.””
We drove home in silence.
Vanessa's car was in the driveway, but the downstairs lights were off. Dad unlocked the front door and found a handwritten note on the dining table.
David, I know I've made mistakes. I need you to understand that everything I did was for my family. Please give me a chance to explain before you destroy our marriage.
Dad read it, folded it once, and placed it beside the mortgage notice.
Then he walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator.
There was a casserole Vanessa had prepared the previous evening. A sticky note on the lid read, For dinner. Love you.
Dad stared at it.
I knew he was remembering all the ordinary things that made a marriage feel safe.
Meals prepared after long shifts. Clothes washed without being asked. A hand on his shoulder when work became difficult.
Not every moment with Vanessa had been a lie.
That was what made the betrayal harder to understand.
Dad closed the refrigerator.
“I need to make some calls.””
He spent the next hour speaking with the bank, the mortgage servicer, and a lawyer recommended by a colleague. He didn't accuse Vanessa of crimes or make threats. He explained the records and asked what steps he could take to protect the property and document the disputed transactions.
The lawyer scheduled an appointment for the following morning and instructed him to preserve every document, avoid signing anything new, and secure access to his financial accounts.
Dad followed the instructions carefully.
He changed the passwords to his personal accounts, enabled additional security, and contacted the bank about reviewing the joint account activity.
At 7:15 p.m., Vanessa came downstairs.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
“David, can we talk?””
He closed his laptop.
“What do you want to say?””
She sat across from him.
“I know you think I'm a terrible person.””
“I think you've made some terrible decisions.””
She swallowed.
“I was afraid of losing my place in this family.””
“So you tried to take everyone else's place away?””
“No.””
“You took money from Marcus. You lied to me about Emily. You used my name without permission. You promised our house to Daniel.””
“I was trying to help my son.””
“And what about mine?””
Vanessa looked at me.
For once, she seemed unable to hide behind excuses.
“Marcus, I'm sorry.””
I stared at her.
“Are you sorry you took the money, or sorry Dad found out?””
Her eyes filled.
“Both.””
At least she didn't pretend otherwise.
Dad leaned forward.
“Where is the rest of the money?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I can repay some of it.””
“How much?””
“About four thousand dollars.””
Dad glanced at the bank statements.
“That doesn't account for the six thousand Marcus paid you, the mortgage arrears, the credit card payments, or the transfers to Cedar Ridge.””
“I don't have all of it anymore.””
“Where did it go?””
She hesitated.
Then she said, “Daniel needed more help than I expected.””
Dad's face tightened.
“Daniel received five thousand dollars from you?””
“Yes.””
“And the legal fees?””
“Some of those payments went directly to his lawyer.””
“Then we will need documentation.””
Vanessa nodded.
Dad continued.
“I also want to know why you paid Cedar Ridge for three years. I want the complete investigation contract, the reports, and every communication you had with them.””
She looked frightened.
“There are things in those reports you won't understand.””
“Then explain them.””
Vanessa's hands trembled.
“I can't.””
Dad stared at her.
“Why not?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Because the investigation wasn't only about Emily.””
I felt my stomach drop.
Dad leaned forward.
“What else were you investigating?””
Vanessa looked directly at him.
For the first time, she seemed less concerned about being caught than about what would happen if she revealed the final secret.
“David, before I married you, I learned something about your first marriage.””
Dad went completely still.
“What?””
Vanessa reached into her purse and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
“I found it when I was going through some of your old documents. I hired Cedar Ridge because I wanted to know whether it was true.””
She placed the paper on the table.
Dad unfolded it.
It was a copy of an old medical record.
My mother's name appeared at the top.
Underneath it was a date from more than twenty years earlier.
Dad read the page once.
Then again.
His face drained of color.
“What is this?””
Vanessa began crying.
“It's the reason I started investigating your past.””
Dad looked at the final line of the record.
Then he whispered something I had never expected to hear.
“That's impossible.””
He turned toward me.
May you like
And the expression on his face told me that whatever the document said, it wasn't only about Emily anymore.
It was about me.
