Chapter 5: The Baby They Buried Without a Funeral

Detective Brooks ordered everyone into the dining room.
The police secured the entrances, while two officers searched the garden and surrounding property.
Ava was still missing.
And now we were being told that another child might have been involved in the same hospital conspiracy.
Detective Brooks placed the photograph on the table.
“Mrs. Carter, I want you to answer carefully. What second baby are we talking about?””
Simone stared at her hands.
“My father's arrangement involved three newborns.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“Three?””
She nodded.
“Maria's baby. My baby. And Grace's baby.””
Maria slowly sat down.
“Where was Grace's baby?””
Simone looked at her.
“I don't know.””
Maria slammed her palm against the table.
“Stop saying that!””
Detective Brooks raised one hand.
“Mrs. Lopez, let her speak.””
Simone swallowed.
“My father believed that certain people shouldn't be allowed to raise children. He thought money and family connections gave him the right to decide where a child belonged.””
I stared at her.
“Your father wasn't deciding where children belonged. He was stealing them.””
Simone began crying harder.
“He called it protecting them.””
“Did you believe him?””
“I wanted to.””
I leaned forward.
“That's not an answer.””
She looked at me.
“When my baby died, I couldn't accept it. My father said there was another child who needed a home. He told me everything would be handled legally.””
Maria shook her head.
“You knew that child was mine.””
Simone nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you took her anyway.””
“I loved her.””
Maria's eyes filled.
“Love doesn't require stealing someone else's child.””
Simone lowered her head.
Detective Brooks interrupted.
“Let's establish the timeline. Did you ever see the third baby?””
Simone nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“At the hospital.””
“What did the baby look like?””
Simone closed her eyes.
“I remember a small girl with dark hair.””
“Was the baby healthy?””
“I don't know.””
“Did your father take the baby?””
She nodded.
“Who received the child?””
“I don't know.””
Detective Brooks leaned closer.
“Mrs. Carter, I need you to understand something. A child may be missing, and we have evidence of potentially falsified birth records. If you continue withholding information, you could be obstructing an investigation.””
Simone wiped her face.
“My father kept a locked office in his estate.””
“Where?””
“His old house in Westchester.””
Marcus looked up.
“The property was sold after his death.””
“Not the house,” Simone replied.
“The office building behind it. It's still owned by a private trust.””
Detective Brooks wrote down the address.
“Who has access?””
“Victor Shaw.””
Marcus slowly exhaled.
“The attorney.””
Simone nodded.
“He knows everything.””
At 3:10 a.m., Detective Brooks received confirmation that Victor Shaw was still alive and practicing law.
An officer contacted his office.
His assistant claimed he was unavailable.
Then, twenty minutes later, he called back.
I was standing in the study when Detective Brooks put the call on speaker.
“Mr. Shaw,” she said, “this is Detective Evelyn Brooks. We need to discuss a matter involving William Brooks and St. Catherine's Medical Center.””
A long pause followed.
Then a man's voice answered.
“I believe you've been misinformed.””
“We have documentation suggesting that hospital birth records were altered six years ago.””
“That's a serious accusation.””
“We also have a missing six-year-old girl.””
Another pause.
Then he said something unexpected.
“Is the child named Ava?””
I looked at the detective.
She kept her voice steady.
“Yes.””
“Then you need to find her immediately.””
“Do you know where she is?””
“No.””
“Do you know who took her?””
Victor sighed.
“Detective, I warned William this would happen eventually.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did you just say?”” I demanded.
The attorney went silent.
Detective Brooks glanced at me.
“Mr. Shaw, who took the child?””
“I don't know.””
“Then why did you say you warned William?””
“Because the arrangement was never supposed to last this long.””
I stepped closer to the phone.
“What arrangement?””
Victor's voice became quieter.
“Mr. Carter, your father-in-law made a promise to three families. He intended to give each child a different identity. He believed it would prevent a scandal.””
“What scandal?””
“I cannot discuss that over the telephone.””
Detective Brooks immediately interrupted.
“Mr. Shaw, you are required to preserve all documents related to this matter. Do not destroy, transfer, or alter anything.””
“Of course.””
The call ended.
I looked at Marcus.
“He knows where Ava is.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Maybe. But he definitely knows more than he's admitting.””
Detective Brooks ordered an officer to prepare a warrant request for the estate property.
Then she turned toward Maria.
“Ms. Lopez, I need to ask you something. Did you ever receive money from William Brooks?””
Maria shook her head.
“No.””
“Did anyone offer you money?””
She hesitated.
“Simone did.””
My wife looked up.
Maria continued.
“She came to my apartment two weeks after Ava was born. She offered me enough money to leave the state and never return.””
Simone covered her face.
“I was trying to make sure she had a good life.””
Maria's voice was quiet.
“You were trying to buy my silence.””
I looked at Simone.
“How much?””
“Two hundred thousand dollars.””
I stared at her.
“You had two hundred thousand dollars available to give Maria, but you never told me what happened at the hospital?””
Simone didn't answer.
Maria looked at me.
“I refused the money. I wanted my daughter.””
“And what did she do?””
“She told me that if I went to the police, my child would be taken away permanently.””
I closed my eyes.
I could barely breathe.
Then Detective Brooks received another call.
She listened carefully.
“Where?””
A pause.
“Send the address.””
She ended the call and looked at me.
“We found something.””
My heart jumped.
“Ava?””
“Not yet. But the security company recovered footage from the street camera outside your property.””
She turned her laptop toward us.
The recording showed a dark SUV stopping near the garden gate at 12:58 a.m.
A figure stepped out.
The person wore a hooded jacket and walked toward the side entrance.
The camera angle didn't show the face.
But when the person turned toward the street, I noticed something familiar.
A silver bracelet.
Simone's bracelet.
I slowly looked at my wife.
She stared at the screen.
Then she began shaking her head.
“No.””
Detective Brooks paused the recording.
“Mrs. Carter, is that your bracelet?””
Simone looked down at her wrist.
The bracelet was gone.
I stepped backward.
“Where is it?””
She began crying.
“I didn't take Ava.””
“Then why is your bracelet on the person who came to the house?””
“I don't know!””
Detective Brooks zoomed in.
The figure appeared to be carrying something under one arm.
A small stuffed animal.
A brown teddy bear.
Ava's teddy bear.
I felt the room closing in.
“Why would someone take her bear?””
Nobody answered.
Then Maria whispered:
“Because there's something inside it.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
Maria looked at the empty sofa.
“The bracelet wasn't the only thing I hid there.””
Detective Brooks stood.
“What else?””
Maria swallowed.
“A letter.””
“From whom?””
Maria's eyes filled.
“From Grace.””
I looked at the screen again.
The figure carrying Ava's teddy bear had disappeared into the darkness.
Detective Brooks turned to Maria.
“Where is the letter now?””
Maria's voice broke.
“I don't know. But Grace told me something six years ago. She said if the children were ever separated again, the letter would prove who they really were.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Children?””
Maria nodded.
“Plural.””
I stared at her.
“You mean Ava and the other baby?””
Maria shook her head.
“No, Mr. Carter.””
May you like
She looked at Simone.
“I mean all three.””
