Chapter 7: The Father Who Never Came Back
“Your father was a member of this family.””
Victoria's words hung in the music room.
Daniel stood motionless.
He looked at Richard, then at the memory card lying on the piano.
“My father is dead?””
Nobody answered.
“Is he?”” Daniel repeated.
Richard slowly lowered himself into a chair.
Charlotte reached for Daniel's hand, but he barely noticed.
Victoria folded her arms.
“Your mother never told you, did she?””
Daniel shook his head.
“She told me my father left before I was born.””
Victoria gave a humorless laugh.
“Technically, he did.””
“Who is he?””
Richard looked toward the windows.
“Victoria, this isn't the way to tell him.””
“Then perhaps you should have told him twenty years ago.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Stop talking around me!””
His voice cracked.
“I've spent my whole life wondering why my father didn't want me. My mother used to say some people weren't ready to be parents. She never said he was rich. She never said he was related to this family.””
Victoria picked up the memory card.
“Your father was Evelyn's younger brother.””
Daniel blinked.
“Arthur Bennett had two children?””
“Three,” Victoria corrected.
“Evelyn, Richard's late wife, and Michael.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Daniel looked at him.
“Who was Michael?””
Richard swallowed.
“Michael Bennett was my brother-in-law. He was a talented musician. He played piano at the family residence.””
“Was?””
“He died several years ago.””
Daniel's face changed.
“When?””
“Five years ago.””
Daniel slowly shook his head.
“My mother died three years ago.””
Victoria nodded.
“Michael never knew you existed until shortly before his death.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because Grace kept you away from him.””
Richard immediately stood.
“That's not true.””
Victoria turned toward him.
“You're defending Grace now?””
“I'm correcting your lie.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Please. Just tell me what happened.””
Richard approached the piano.
“Michael and Grace met when they were young. They fell in love. Arthur disapproved because he believed Grace was beneath the family.””
Daniel's throat tightened.
“So my father knew my mother?””
“Yes.””
“Did he love her?””
Richard looked directly at him.
“Very much.””
Daniel looked down.
For years, he had imagined his father as a man who had simply walked away.
Now he was learning that the man had lived in the same city, belonged to the same wealthy family, and might have spent years looking for him.
“Why didn't he come?”” Daniel asked.
Richard hesitated.
“Arthur threatened to cut Michael off from the family if he married Grace. Michael was young and frightened. He left the estate.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“But he knew about me?””
“Not at first.””
Victoria smiled faintly.
“Then Grace became pregnant. Arthur found out and made sure Michael was sent overseas.””
Richard turned sharply.
“You're leaving out the most important part.””
“Am I?””
“Yes. Michael returned.””
Daniel looked up.
“When?””
“Shortly before he died. He came looking for Grace.””
Daniel's voice became a whisper.
“Did he find her?””
Richard shook his head.
“He was told she had moved away.””
Daniel's hands began trembling.
“Who told him?””
Richard looked at Victoria.
She didn't answer.
Daniel understood.
“You.””
Victoria lifted her chin.
“I protected the family.””
“You told my father my mother was gone?””
“I told him she had chosen to disappear.””
Daniel stepped back.
For a moment, he couldn't breathe.
His father had been alive.
He had been looking.
And someone had stood between them.
“Did he leave anything for me?””
Richard nodded slowly.
“He left a letter.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Where?””
Richard hesitated.
“Arthur kept it in his personal safe. I thought it had been destroyed.””
Victoria's expression changed.
“Richard.””
He ignored her.
“I believe it's still somewhere in this house.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You've had a letter from my father all this time?””
“I didn't know it existed until after Michael died.””
“Then why didn't you look?””
Richard had no answer.
Daniel turned away.
Charlotte rolled closer.
“Daniel?””
He wiped his eyes quickly.
“I'm okay.””
“You don't look okay.””
He tried to smile.
“I'm just thinking.””
Charlotte reached for his hand.
“My mother is gone too. Sometimes I think about all the things I didn't get to ask her.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What do you ask?””
“Whether she would have liked my dress. Whether she would have laughed at my jokes. Whether she would have danced with me.””
Charlotte paused.
“Sometimes I wish I could hear her voice again.””
Daniel looked at the memory card.
“Maybe we can hear ours.””
He pointed toward the piano.
Richard nodded.
“Let's listen.””
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Richard turned.
“Move.””
“You don't understand what's on that recording.””
“Then we will.””
Victoria grabbed the card.
Daniel reached out.
“Give it back.””
She pulled away.
“It's not safe for you to hear.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You've already decided what I'm allowed to know about my own life. I'm done with that.””
Victoria looked toward the door.
A security guard appeared.
“Mrs. Bennett?””
“Take the boy outside.””
Charlotte raised her voice.
“Don't touch him!””
The guard hesitated.
Richard stepped forward.
“Stand down.””
“Sir?””
“That's an order.””
The guard moved aside.
Victoria looked furious.
“You're making a mistake.””
Richard took the memory card from her hand.
“No. I've been making mistakes for twenty years.””
He placed it inside a small audio player on the piano.
The screen flickered.
A recording appeared.
*GRACE CARTER — FINAL MESSAGE.*
Daniel stopped breathing.
Richard pressed play.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Soft.
Tired.
Unmistakably familiar.
“Daniel, my sweet boy. If you're hearing this, then I wasn't able to tell you everything myself.””
Daniel covered his mouth.
It was his mother.
Her voice sounded exactly as he remembered it.
“I need you to know that your father loved you. He wanted to meet you. I tried to make it happen, but people with more money than us kept deciding what was best.””
A pause.
Then Grace continued.
“I don't want you to grow up hating the Bennett family. Your father wasn't a bad man. He was scared. He made mistakes, but he loved you.””
Daniel's tears fell freely.
Charlotte held his hand.
The recording continued.
“And if you ever meet Charlotte, please be kind to her. She has spent too much of her life surrounded by people who think love means making decisions for her.””
Charlotte lowered her head.
Grace's voice softened.
“Dance with her if she asks. Sit beside her if she doesn't. But never make her feel like she needs to prove she's worth loving.””
Daniel began crying harder.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“Richard, if you're listening, I need you to tell Daniel the truth about the night Michael died.””
Richard went rigid.
The recording crackled.
“Michael didn't die believing his son had forgotten him. He died believing his son had been taken away from him.””
Daniel turned toward Richard.
“What does that mean?””
Richard stared at the screen.
The recording continued.
“I kept the hospital records. I kept the letters. I kept the photograph. But there is one thing I never told Daniel.””
Grace took a shaky breath.
“Michael wasn't killed by the illness the doctors described.””
The room went silent.
“He was in an accident after leaving the Bennett estate. He had just discovered that someone had intercepted his letters.””
Richard looked sick.
Grace's voice broke.
“He was driving to find his son.””
Daniel stumbled backward.
“No.””
Charlotte reached for him.
“Daniel...””
He shook his head.
“My father was coming to find me?””
The recording ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Richard looked at Victoria.
“Tell him what happened.””
Victoria's face had lost its color.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Richard pointed at the memory card.
“Grace kept a copy of the original police report.””
Victoria turned toward the door.
Richard stepped in front of her.
“You're not leaving.””
She looked at him coldly.
“You cannot prove anything.””
Richard's voice trembled.
“Then explain why you paid the driver who was supposed to deliver Michael's letters.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
Victoria said nothing.
Richard continued.
“I found the payment records this morning.””
Daniel stared at Victoria.
“Did you stop my father from finding me?””
Victoria looked at him.
Then she said something that made the entire room freeze.
“I didn't stop him from finding you.””
May you like
She took a breath.
“I stopped him from telling you who he really was.””
