Chapter 5: The Man Who Came to Offer an Explanation
Marcus descended the staircase with the forged authorization tucked inside his jacket.
The reception hall had nearly emptied. A few guests remained near the entrance, whispering as they collected their coats. The television still displayed the security footage, frozen on the moment Denise slipped the bracelet into Maya's handbag.
Daniel Price stood beneath the chandelier.
His charcoal suit was immaculate. His silver tie was perfectly straight, and his dark leather shoes reflected the afternoon light coming through the windows.
He looked exactly as Marcus remembered him.
Comfortable.
Respectable.
Safe.
That was what made the sight of him so disturbing.
Daniel smiled when Marcus reached the bottom step.
“Marcus. Thank God.””
He extended his hand.
Marcus stared at it.
Daniel slowly lowered it.
“I heard there was an incident.””
“You heard correctly.””
“I came as soon as I could.””
“Why?””
Daniel's smile faltered.
“Because of Elise.””
Marcus felt something inside him tighten.
“You knew her name was involved?””
“Denise called me. She said you'd found some old documents and that the situation had become complicated.””
“Did she tell you about the bracelet?””
Daniel glanced toward the television.
“Yes. It's appalling. I always knew Denise could be reckless, but I never thought she'd involve a child.””
Marcus almost admired the performance.
Daniel sounded genuinely disappointed. His eyebrows drew together, and his voice softened as though he were mourning Maya's humiliation.
“You should report what happened,” Daniel continued.
“A public accusation like that can leave scars.””
Marcus took a step closer.
“You're very concerned about public accusations today.””
Daniel blinked.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I found a recording of someone threatening my wife.””
Daniel's expression did not change immediately.
Then his eyes moved to Marcus's jacket.
“What recording?””
Marcus watched him carefully.
“An old one.””
Daniel let out a slow breath.
“Marcus, I know Elise's death was devastating for you. For all of us. But you need to be careful with old recordings.
People say things when they're upset. Without context, a conversation can sound like something it isn't.””
“That's interesting.””
“What is?””
“You haven't asked what the recording contains.””
Daniel's smile disappeared.
A waiter passing behind him slowed down.
Daniel glanced around, then lowered his voice.
“Can we speak privately?””
“No.””
“Marcus, please. This isn't a conversation for an audience.””
“You seemed comfortable having private conversations with my wife while threatening our family.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“Who told you that?””
Marcus said nothing.
For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely uncertain.
He adjusted his cuff.
“I think we should start at the beginning. Elise had become convinced that the foundation was being mismanaged. She was brilliant, but she was also exhausted. She started connecting unrelated events and making accusations.””
“That's what Denise told me.””
“Because it's true.””
“Then why did you threaten her?””
Daniel stared at him.
“I never threatened Elise.””
Marcus took the digital recorder from his pocket.
Daniel's gaze locked onto it.
“You recognize this?””
“No.””
Marcus pressed play.
Static crackled through the speaker.
Then Daniel's voice filled the room.
You should have left this alone, Elise.
Daniel went pale.
The recording continued for several seconds before Marcus stopped it.
Nobody in the reception hall spoke.
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
Then toward the staircase.
Finally, he turned back to Marcus.
“Where did you get that?””
“From my wife's study.””
Daniel's mouth tightened.
“Then you should know that private recordings can be misleading.””
“You already said that.””
“Because it's true.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Did you threaten my wife?””
Daniel glanced at the remaining guests.
“Not here.””
“Did you threaten my wife?””
“I was trying to stop her from making a catastrophic mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“She was going to accuse the wrong person.””
Marcus felt his heartbeat quicken.
“Who was she supposed to accuse?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said, “You.””
The word hung between them.
Marcus stared at him.
Daniel continued quickly.
“Elise believed you had approved the transfer. She thought you were involved in the missing money. She came to me because she wanted proof, and I told her the records were incomplete.””
“You're saying my wife thought I was stealing from the foundation?””
“She had evidence bearing your signature.””
“Someone forged my signature.””
“I didn't know that at the time.””
“Yet you knew enough to threaten her.””
Daniel rubbed a hand over his mouth.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Marcus gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
“By threatening my wife?””
“By keeping her from destroying your life.””
Daniel's voice rose.
“Think about it, Marcus. If Elise had taken that report to the police, investigators would have found your signature on the transfer. Your accounts would have been frozen.
Your reputation would have been destroyed. Your daughter would have grown up with people whispering that her father was a thief.””
“And you thought threatening Elise was the solution?””
“I thought I could buy time.””
“For what?””
“To find out who was behind the transfers.””
Marcus held his gaze.
“Did you?””
Daniel looked away.
That was answer enough.
Marcus pulled the forged authorization from his jacket.
“Is this your work?””
Daniel stared at the page.
“I've never seen that document.””
“Your approval code is on it.””
“That's an internal reference. It doesn't mean I signed anything.””
“And the photograph of me carrying files outside my house?””
Daniel's eyes widened.
“You found that?””
“Why was someone photographing me?””
“I don't know.””
“Who had access to my authorization packets?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Several people.””
“Names.””
“Marcus, this is complicated.””
“Names.””
Daniel glanced at the television again.
“I need to see the entire file.””
“No.””
“I might be able to identify the source.””
“You can identify it for the police.””
Daniel's composure began to crack.
“Don't be stupid. If you hand this over without understanding the structure behind it, you'll ruin more than one life.””
“Whose life are you worried about?””
“Yours!””
Daniel's shout echoed across the marble floor.
A guest near the entrance stopped walking.
Daniel lowered his voice, breathing hard.
“You think you're the only person who can be hurt by this? Elise was investigating a network of people who had been moving money through the foundation for years. People with investments, political connections, and enough resources to bury the truth.””
“Were you part of that network?””
“I was trying to get out.””
“When?””
Daniel said nothing.
Marcus stepped back.
“Three years ago, you told me you'd protect my family.””
“I meant it.””
“You sat beside me in the hospital and told me Elise had died from a sudden medical emergency.””
“She did.””
“Then why did you threaten her before she died?””
Daniel's eyes shone with frustration.
“Because she wouldn't listen!””
He stopped.
The admission had escaped before he could catch it.
Marcus went very still.
“What wouldn't she listen to?””
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
“I told her to wait. I told her that the person responsible would be exposed. I told her that if she went public before we had enough evidence, the entire investigation would collapse.””
“And she refused.””
“Yes.””
“What happened next?””
Daniel looked directly at Marcus.
“She called you.””
Marcus's throat tightened.
“When?””
“The night she died.””
“I was at home when she called. She said she needed me to pick her up from the foundation's office.””
“Exactly.””
Marcus remembered the call.
Elise had sounded frightened, but she had tried to hide it. She told him she had forgotten something important and asked him to meet her outside the office.
He had been delayed by traffic.
By the time he arrived, she was already in the parking lot, leaning against her car with one hand pressed to her chest.
He remembered her pale face.
Her cold fingers.
The way she had apologized for bothering him.
He had never understood why she had been standing outside instead of waiting inside.
“Why was she in the parking lot?”” Marcus asked.
Daniel's face tightened.
“She said she wanted to leave before anyone noticed she had taken the files.””
“What files?””
“The original account records.””
Marcus gripped the document.
“You told me she hadn't taken anything from the office.””
“I didn't want you involved.””
“Where are the records now?””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“I don't know.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Stop lying.””
Daniel's composure finally shattered.
“I am trying to keep you alive!””
The room fell silent.
Marcus stared at him.
Daniel seemed to realize what he had said.
His eyes darted toward the guests, then back to Marcus.
“That's not what I meant.””
“Then explain what you meant.””
Daniel's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Someone knew Elise was leaving that night. Someone knew she had the files. Someone followed her.””
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.
“Who?””
“I never saw the person.””
“But you know who arranged it.””
Daniel said nothing.
Marcus reached for his phone.
“I'm calling the police.””
Daniel grabbed his wrist.
“Wait!””
Marcus immediately pulled free.
“Don't touch me.””
Daniel backed away.
“If you call them now, they'll find the transfer records, the forged signature, and the money trail. You'll be treated as a suspect before anyone understands what happened.””
“Then I'll explain.””
“They won't believe you.””
“You don't know that.””
“I know the system. I know how these things work.””
Marcus lifted his phone.
Daniel's face twisted with desperation.
“Your daughter will be questioned. Your wife's death will be reopened. They'll dig into every account you own. Do you understand what that means?””
Marcus looked toward the kitchen doorway.
Maya stood there with Arthur, holding a plate with two untouched chocolate biscuits.
She had heard enough to understand that her father's face had changed.
She walked toward him.
“Daddy?””
Marcus lowered the phone.
Daniel looked at her, and for a brief moment his expression softened.
“Maya,” he said, “I'm so sorry about what happened today.””
She moved behind Marcus.
“You know my name?””
“Of course I do. I knew your mother very well.””
Maya peered around her father's arm.
“Did you make Mommy sad?””
Daniel's lips parted.
For once, no polished answer came.
Maya's voice trembled.
“Because I heard you say something bad to her.””
Marcus turned toward his daughter.
“What did you hear, sweetheart?””
Maya looked at the television.
“Before Arthur came upstairs, I was looking for my ribbon. I heard the recording playing from the hallway.””
Daniel's face lost all color.
Maya continued.
“And I heard another voice before that. A woman.””
Marcus knelt beside her.
“What did the woman say?””
Maya thought carefully.
“She said, 'If he finds out, both of us are finished.''”
Daniel took a sudden step toward her.
“Where did you hear that?””
Maya recoiled.
Marcus stood immediately, placing himself between them.
“Don't go near her.””
Daniel raised both hands.
“I wasn't going to hurt her.””
“Then answer the question.””
Daniel's eyes flicked toward the staircase.
Marcus followed his gaze.
Denise stood halfway up the stairs, holding a phone against her chest.
She had been listening.
And when she realized everyone had seen her, she turned and ran.
Arthur moved toward the staircase, but Marcus raised a hand.
“Let her go.””
Daniel looked at Marcus in disbelief.
“You don't understand what you've just done.””
“No,” Marcus replied.
“But I intend to.””
Daniel backed toward the entrance.
“You'll regret this.””
“Maybe.””
Marcus pulled Maya closer.
“But at least I won't have to explain to my daughter why I helped the people who hurt her mother.””
Daniel stared at him for a long moment.
Then he walked out.
Through the glass doors, Marcus watched him cross the driveway and climb into a black sedan.
Before the car pulled away, Daniel took out his phone.
He made a call.
A few seconds later, Marcus's own phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message.
*You have the wrong man. Ask Denise who was driving the car that night.*
Marcus looked up.
The black sedan disappeared beyond the mansion gates.

Then Maya whispered something that made his heart stop.
“Daddy, I remember the car.””
