Chapter 9: My Mother's Last Secret
I couldn't take my eyes off the photograph.
My mother had been buried eighteen months earlier.
I had watched them lower her coffin.
I had stood beside Lily while she placed a white rose on the lid.
I had delivered the eulogy.
And yet there she was.
Standing in front of the old family estate.
Alive.
Or someone who looked exactly like her.
I looked at the officer.
“Where did you get this?””
“Traffic camera footage. The vehicle passed the east checkpoint yesterday at 6:42 p.m.””
“Who is the woman?””
“We don't know yet.””
I turned toward Alicia.
She was staring at the photograph.
Her lips trembled.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
“What?””
“That's not your mother.””
I looked at her.
“How can you know?””
“Because I saw her.””
“When?””
“Three years ago. The night I disappeared.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Tell me.””
Alicia looked at Lily.
Then she glanced toward the police officers.
“Not here.””
I was done with secrets.
“Here. Now.””
She closed her eyes.
“Your mother came to my hospital room the night I gave birth. She told me the baby was in danger. She said someone had paid the nurses to change the records.””
I nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“She told me to take the baby and leave.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She said if I stayed, the child would disappear.””
I looked at Lily.
“Which child?””
Alicia shook her head.
“I didn't know. I was exhausted. I was terrified. I just wanted to protect my baby.””
My throat tightened.
“What happened?””
“She gave me a car key and told me to meet her at the old estate. But when I arrived, she wasn't there.””
“Then?””
“I found Evelyn waiting for me.””
I looked toward the door.
“Evelyn?””
Alicia nodded.
“She told me your mother had changed her mind. She said the baby was already safe.””
“Did you believe her?””
“No.””
Alicia's eyes filled.
“I tried to leave, but she threatened to call the police and accuse me of kidnapping.””
I felt anger rise.
“Why didn't you call me?””
“Because I thought you were involved.””
I stared at her.
She looked away.
“Your mother told me that your father had arranged everything. She said you might have known about the hospital investigation.””
“I didn't.””
“I know that now.””
I took a breath.
“Then why did you stay away for three years?””
Alicia wiped her cheeks.
“Because I was told Lily would be killed if I came back.””
I felt the room grow cold.
“Who told you that?””
She looked toward the hospital window.
“Vanessa.””
I closed my eyes.
The woman I had almost married.
The woman who had spent years pretending to protect my family.
Alicia continued.
“She came to see me several weeks after I disappeared. She said she had information about the hospital. She told me that if I contacted you, Evelyn would take Lily away.””
I shook my head.
“And you believed her?””
“I was desperate. I had no way to know who was telling the truth.””
I looked down at Lily.
She was holding my hand.
“Why did you contact her yesterday?””
Alicia frowned.
“I didn't.””
“Then why did Vanessa have a call from your name?””
Alicia shook her head.
“I don't know.””
The police officer stepped forward.
“Mr. Hayes, we need to get the child to a safe location.””
I nodded.
“She's coming with me.””
“Of course. But we'll need to speak to you separately.””
I looked at Lily.
“Can I stay with Daddy?””
The officer smiled gently.
“Absolutely.””
An hour later, we were at the police station.
Lily sat beside me in a quiet interview room, eating crackers from a paper packet.
Alicia was speaking with detectives in another room.
Rachel had been taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Evelyn and Patricia were being questioned.
I was beginning to feel as if the entire world had turned upside down.
A detective named Harris entered.
He placed a folder on the table.
“Mr. Hayes, we've located the original maternity records.””
I sat up.
“Where?””
“Inside Evelyn Cross's storage unit.””
“Do they identify Lily?””
He opened the folder.
“Not conclusively. But they identify the two babies born that night.””
He placed two photographs on the table.
One showed a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.
The other showed a baby wearing a pale pink cap.
I looked at the identification bracelets.
One said Morgan.
The other said Hayes.
“Which one is Lily?””
Detective Harris shook his head.
“We're waiting for the laboratory results.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Then what do you know?””
He removed another document.
“Your mother adopted a child in 1998.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“Not legally. There was no adoption record. But we found a private payment to a family in Ohio. A child was transferred to your parents when she was approximately two years old.””
I stared.
“Are you saying I had a sister?””
Detective Harris nodded.
“Possibly.””
My heart began pounding.
“What was her name?””
“Margaret's documents refer to her as Grace.””
I looked at Lily.
Grace.
The name my grandmother had wanted us to use.
The name that appeared on the photograph in the maternity ward.
I felt sick.
“Where is she now?””
“We're investigating.””
Detective Harris closed the folder.
“There's one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“We found a recording on Evelyn's phone. It appears to be a conversation between your mother and Vanessa.””
He placed a small recorder on the table.
I pressed play.
My mother's voice filled the room.
“Vanessa, you must understand that Daniel cannot know.””
Vanessa answered.
“He's going to find out eventually.””
“Not if you do what I asked.””
“What about Alicia?””
“She's too close to the truth.””
“And Lily?””
A pause.
Then my mother's voice.
“Lily is the only thing that matters. Whatever happens, you must keep her with Daniel.””
I felt my throat tighten.
Vanessa asked another question.
“What if he discovers who she really is?””
My mother answered quietly.
“Then tell him the truth about his father.””
The recording ended.
I sat completely still.
Detective Harris watched me.
“Do you know what that means?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He removed another page from the folder.
It was a DNA report.
My name appeared at the top.
Below it was a genetic relationship assessment.
The result was marked in bold.
*PATERNITY CONFIRMED.*
I looked up.
“What?””
Detective Harris pointed to the document.
“The child identified as Lily is biologically yours.””
I felt a wave of relief so powerful that my eyes filled.
“Then Alicia…”
He hesitated.
“Your wife is not her biological mother.””
I looked at the report.
The numbers blurred.
I wanted to believe that this settled everything.
But it didn't explain why my mother had hidden Lily's identity.
Or why Vanessa had been involved.
Or why Alicia had been told her baby was dead.
The detective continued.
“We also tested the second child in the hospital records.””
“Which child?””
“The one listed as Alicia's biological daughter.””
I leaned forward.
“What did you find?””
He looked at me.
“She shares a biological relationship with Rachel Morgan.””
I closed my eyes.
“So Rachel was right.””
“Partly.””
I opened them.
“What does that mean?””
Detective Harris placed another report on the table.
“Rachel is the biological mother of the child who was taken from Alicia's room. But the child who was eventually raised by you is biologically yours.””
I frowned.
“Then who gave birth to Lily?””
The detective hesitated.
“We're still confirming the identity of the birth mother.””
I stared at him.
“Didn't you just say—”
“We have a third genetic profile.””
My heart stopped.
“Third?””
He nodded.
“The hospital records indicate that another woman was admitted under an alias that night. She delivered a baby shortly before midnight.””
I looked at the name.
*Patient 14-B.*
No photograph.
No identity.
No birth certificate.
Only a handwritten note.
*Emergency placement approved by Margaret Hayes.*
I felt cold.
“Who was Patient 14-B?””
Detective Harris shook his head.
“We don't know yet.””
At 11:36 p.m., Alicia entered the room.
She looked exhausted.
“Daniel, can we talk?””
I nodded.
She sat across from me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she looked at Lily.
“She's beautiful.””
I swallowed.
“She is.””
Alicia smiled sadly.
“Does she still remember me?””
Lily looked up.
“Mommy?””
Alicia's eyes filled.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Lily slid off her chair and walked toward her.
Alicia knelt.
Lily hugged her.
I turned away.
I didn't know whether Alicia had any biological connection to my daughter.
But I knew she had loved her.
I knew Lily remembered her.
And I knew no laboratory could erase that.
Alicia looked at me over Lily's shoulder.
“I'm sorry.””
I shook my head.
“We'll figure this out.””
She nodded.
Then she reached into her coat pocket.
“I found something in the envelope Margaret left at the estate.””
She placed a small key on the table.
It was old and brass-colored.
“What's this?””
“The key to her private study.””
I stared.
“The estate?””
Alicia nodded.
“There's a locked cabinet inside. Your mother's lawyer said she left instructions that it could only be opened after both silver stars were recovered.””
I looked at the necklace in my hand.
“What's inside?””
Alicia lowered her voice.
“The truth about Patient 14-B.””
I looked at Detective Harris.
“We're going there.””
He immediately shook his head.
“Absolutely not. The estate is being secured.””
“Then come with us.””
The detective hesitated.
Finally, he nodded.
The estate stood at the end of a long driveway.
The house was dark.
Rain tapped against the windows.
I hadn't visited since my mother's funeral.
The smell inside was familiar.
Lavender.
Old books.
Polished wood.
A life that had once felt safe.
Alicia led us upstairs.
We entered the study.
The cabinet stood behind a large portrait of my parents.
I inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside were three envelopes.
One bore my name.
One bore Alicia's.
The last had a child's name written across it.
*To my granddaughter, Lily.*
I opened mine first.
It contained a letter.
My mother's handwriting.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.
I did not arrange the hospital switch because I wanted to steal another woman's child.
I arranged it because your father had already made a decision that would have destroyed three families.
I stopped.
Alicia leaned closer.
I continued.
Your father was not the man you believed him to be. He had a child before he married me. A daughter.
My fingers trembled.
That child was Patient 14-B.
I looked at Alicia.
Then I read the final paragraph.
Daniel, the baby you brought home was never supposed to be raised by you. But I chose you to be her father because I knew you would love her without asking who she was.
I looked at Lily.
She was standing beside Alicia, holding the silver star.
My mother had known.
She had known exactly who Lily was.
And she had hidden it from everyone.
Then I opened Alicia's envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A newborn baby.
And a name.
*Grace Hayes.*
Alicia began crying.
“That was my daughter.””
I looked at her.
Then I opened the final envelope.
There was a recent photograph inside.
A young woman stood outside a university building.
She had dark hair, bright eyes, and a familiar smile.
On the back was a handwritten message.
*Your daughter is alive. She knows who she is. And she has been waiting for you to find her.*
Below it was an address.
And a date.
Tomorrow.
I stared at the photograph.
Then I noticed something.
The young woman was wearing a necklace.
A small silver star.
Identical to Lily's.
Alicia covered her mouth.
“Daniel…”
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She pointed at the photograph.
“That isn't just my daughter.””
I looked closer.
The young woman had a small birthmark near her left shoulder.
The same mark I had seen on the newborn photograph.
And suddenly, I understood.
The child Alicia had been searching for wasn't missing anymore.
Someone had raised her.
Someone had taught her to live without her mother.
Someone had told her the truth.
But the most frightening part was the date on the photograph.
It had been taken yesterday.
Which meant the young woman knew exactly what had happened at the hotel.
And she knew I was looking for her.
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message.
*Hello, Dad. I've been waiting six years for you to find me. But before we meet, there's something you need to know about the woman you're calling your wife.*
I looked at Alicia.
She was staring at the message.
Then another message arrived.
*Alicia didn't give birth to me. She stole me.*
I slowly lowered the phone.
Because for the first time that night, I wondered whether the woman I had spent three years searching for had been telling me the truth at all.
And somewhere outside the estate, a car engine started.
Alicia looked toward the window.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel, don't let her get inside.””
The front door opened.
A woman's voice called from downstairs.
“Dad?””
I recognized the voice.
It was the same voice from the phone.
May you like
Then she said:
“It's time you met your real daughter.””
