Chapter 5: The Secret the Bride Never Told Her Husband

Tiffany stared at the message until the letters blurred.

Her mother had guaranteed part of the wedding expenses.

Daniel had never heard that before.

Neither had Margaret.

For several seconds, Tiffany considered pretending the message didn't exist. She could turn off her phone, return to the ballroom, and insist that the entire problem was Margaret's fault.

But another message appeared.

Call me immediately. They say the guarantee may be enforceable.

Tiffany's thumb hovered over the screen.

Daniel noticed her expression.

"What is it?""

"Nothing.""

"Who texted you?""

"My mother.""

"What did she say?""

"Nothing important.""

Daniel held out his hand.

"Tiffany.""

She looked at him sharply.

"Don't start interrogating me.""

"I'm not interrogating you. I asked what happened.""

She locked the phone and pushed it into her clutch.

"Your mother has created enough drama for one evening. I don't need you joining in.""

Margaret remained seated, watching the exchange.

She had learned long ago that the quickest way to discover what someone was hiding was to stop asking questions and give them enough silence to reveal themselves.

Tiffany couldn't bear the silence.

"I'm going to make a call," she announced.

She hurried toward the hallway outside the banquet office.

Daniel watched her go.

Then he turned back to his mother.

"Do you know what she's talking about?""

"No.""

"Could her family really be responsible for part of the bill?""

"I don't know, Daniel. I haven't seen their agreement.""

He lowered his voice.

"I didn't know they'd signed anything.""

"Neither did I.""

Margaret studied him.

"Have you ever asked Tiffany how she planned to pay for the things she requested?""

Daniel looked away.

"I thought you were handling the expenses.""

"I was handling the expenses I agreed to handle. That's not the same thing.""

He nodded, ashamed.

"I understand that now.""

"Good. Then you need to understand something else. Whatever her family agreed to, we cannot assume they can or should rescue you.

You and Tiffany signed the supplemental contract. You need to know what you agreed to.""

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

"She told me her parents were helping with the rehearsal dinner.""

"Did she tell you they were guaranteeing additional wedding charges?""

"No.""

Margaret took a slow breath.

"Then you need to ask her directly.""

In the hallway, Tiffany pressed her phone to her ear.

Her mother answered on the first ring.

"What have you done?"" Denise Reed demanded.

Tiffany closed her eyes.

"Mom, I need you to calm down.""

"Calm down? I just received a call from the Bellamy Grand saying that a wedding account I guaranteed has been suspended. They said there's a twenty-eight-thousand-dollar balance.""

"It's not what it sounds like.""

"Then tell me what it is.""

Tiffany glanced through the open doorway. Guests were still sitting at their tables, their conversations subdued. The musicians had begun packing their equipment into black cases.

She turned away.

"Margaret cancelled the extra services.""

"And why is there an outstanding balance?""

"Because the venue is trying to punish us.""

"Tiffany.""

Her mother's voice was sharp enough to make her flinch.

"Did you sign an agreement?""

"Yes, but—"

"Did you read it?""

Tiffany said nothing.

Denise Reed let out a long breath.

"Oh, honey.""

The tenderness in her voice made Tiffany feel worse than anger would have.

"Mom, I thought Margaret was paying for everything.""

"She told us she would pay for the original wedding package. I specifically asked whether you and Daniel had budgeted for the upgrades.""

"We did.""

"With what money?""

Tiffany looked down at her shoes.

"Daniel was going to handle it.""

"With his business?""

"He said everything would work out.""

"And you signed the guarantee because you believed that?""

Tiffany's eyes filled.

"I didn't think it would become a problem.""

"That's not an answer.""

"Mom, please. I need you to help me.""

Denise was quiet.

Then she said, "I can help you understand what you signed. I cannot promise to pay twenty-eight thousand dollars because you decided a wedding needed more champagne.""

Tiffany pressed her free hand against the wall.

"You don't understand how humiliating this is.""

"I understand perfectly. I also understand that your father and I agreed to guarantee the rehearsal dinner and the additional family reception, not every extra charge you requested.""

Tiffany's heart sank.

"What?""

"The agreement we signed listed specific services. Your father and I did not guarantee the entire wedding.""

"But the hotel said—"

"They said our guarantee may apply to part of the outstanding account. They are checking the paperwork. That is why I am calling you.""

Tiffany swallowed.

"How much?""

"I don't know yet. The hotel hasn't finished reviewing the invoices.""

Tiffany's voice broke.

"Mom, I can't lose everything tonight.""

"You are not losing everything. You are facing a bill.""

"It's my wedding!""

"And it's also your responsibility.""

Tiffany pulled the phone away from her ear.

For a moment, she wanted to throw it against the wall.

She had spent months imagining this night. The ballroom, the flowers, the designer gown, the photographer capturing every perfect angle. She had pictured herself standing beneath the chandeliers while guests whispered about how beautiful everything was.

She had never pictured herself begging her mother to help pay an invoice.

She had certainly never imagined that Margaret would refuse.

When Tiffany returned to the consultation room, Daniel was waiting beside Denise Carter.

The event manager had opened a laptop and arranged the relevant contracts on the table.

"Ms. Williams," Denise said, "I've received confirmation that your mother has contacted our finance department. We're reviewing the guarantee she signed.""

Tiffany sat down.

"Fine. Then you can turn the music back on.""

"I'm afraid the review is still in progress.""

"How long will it take?""

"That depends on whether we can verify the scope of the guarantee and establish an acceptable payment arrangement.""

Tiffany looked at Daniel.

"Tell her to stop talking to me like I'm some stranger who walked in off the street.""

Daniel didn't respond.

Denise continued.

"The original wedding package remains active. Your guests can continue using the contracted facilities, and the standard meal service will proceed. However, the supplemental bar extension, additional entertainment hours, and late-night food station remain suspended.""

Tiffany's mouth tightened.

"So we're supposed to serve our guests dinner and then send them home?""

"No. The reception can continue within the original contracted schedule.""

"And the music?""

"The band can complete the original contracted set.""

"That's not what we paid for.""

Denise looked at the signed forms.

"That is not what the supplemental agreement says. The original entertainment package ends at ten o'clock. The extended hours were an additional service.""

Tiffany stared at her.

"You're making this sound like we planned to steal something.""

"No, ma'am. I'm explaining which services are currently authorized.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"What happens if we pay part of the balance tonight?""

"We can submit that proposal to finance.""

"Would they accept ten thousand dollars?""

Denise considered the question.

"I can ask. But I need to be clear that a partial payment does not automatically reinstate the suspended services.""

Tiffany turned to him.

"Ten thousand? Where are you getting ten thousand dollars?""

"Some savings. I can ask the bank about a short-term loan.""

"You can't take out a loan without talking to me.""

Daniel stared at her.

"We're discussing how to pay a debt we both signed for.""

"And I'm telling you that you can't make a financial decision like that without me.""

He leaned back slowly.

"Then tell me how we're paying it.""

Tiffany looked at Denise.

"Can you give us a few minutes?""

"Of course.""

Denise gathered the papers and stepped outside.

The moment the door closed, Tiffany turned on Daniel.

"Your mother has humiliated me in front of everyone.""

Daniel's face tightened.

"You humiliated her first.""

"I slapped her because she wouldn't stop provoking me!""

"She was standing there.""

"With that expression!""

"What expression?""

"That look she gives me. Like I'm some stupid girl who doesn't deserve you.""

Daniel stared at her.

"She has paid for nearly everything we've asked her to pay for.""

"Exactly! And now she thinks she can control us because of it.""

"Then why did you keep asking her for money?""

Tiffany opened her mouth.

Daniel continued before she could answer.

"Why did you ask for the second bar? Why did you insist on the extra champagne? Why did you approve the late-night food station when I told you we were already over budget?""

"Because I wanted our wedding to be special!""

"So did I.""

"Then you should have supported me.""

"I did support you. I signed the forms.""

"Because I told you your mother was covering the cost!""

Daniel went still.

There it was.

The truth neither of them had wanted to say aloud.

He had signed because he believed Margaret would pay. Tiffany had signed because she believed Margaret would pay. Neither had made a realistic plan for the possibility that Margaret might say no.

"Did you ever intend to pay these expenses yourself?"" Daniel asked.

Tiffany looked offended.

"Of course I did.""

"With what?""

"I was going to figure it out.""

"How?""

She stood.

"Stop talking to me like I'm a child!""

"Then stop expecting everyone else to solve your problems!""

The words struck the room like a second slap.

Tiffany's eyes widened.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Daniel looked horrified by his own anger, but he didn't take the words back.

Tiffany picked up her clutch.

"I cannot believe you're doing this to me.""

"I'm not doing anything to you. I'm asking you to tell me the truth.""

"You want the truth?""

She stepped closer.

"Fine. I wanted one night where I didn't have to worry about money. One night where I could be the bride I'd always dreamed of being. Is that so terrible?""

"No.""

"Then why are you acting like I committed a crime?""

"Because you hit my mother, lied to me about the expenses, and expected her to keep paying after you threw her out.""

Tiffany's lips trembled.

"I didn't think she'd actually leave.""

Daniel looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

She swallowed.

"I thought she'd calm down. She always does.""

"Always?""

Tiffany looked away.

Daniel rose slowly.

"How many times have you treated her badly because you assumed she'd pay for something afterward?""

"That's not fair.""

"Answer me.""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

He stared at her.

And she knew, from the look on his face, that he had finally begun to understand how little he knew about the woman he had married.

Before he could ask another question, Denise returned.

"I'm sorry to interrupt," she said, "but the finance director has reviewed the preliminary documents.""

Tiffany straightened immediately.

"And?""

"Your mother's guarantee covers the rehearsal dinner and a specific group of supplemental services. It does not cover the entire outstanding balance. We are still determining the exact amount attributable to the guaranteed services.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Can you give us a number?""

"Not yet. We have to reconcile the individual invoices.""

Tiffany gripped the edge of the table.

"How long?""

"Approximately twenty minutes.""

"Twenty minutes?"" she repeated.

"Our guests are sitting out there watching this happen!""

Denise remained composed.

"I understand that this is upsetting. But I cannot authorize services without the appropriate payment approval.""

Tiffany looked at Daniel.

"Call your mother.""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"Daniel, please.""

"No. We need to handle this ourselves.""

Tiffany stared at him, searching for the familiar softness she had always relied on.

She found none.

Then she looked down at her phone again.

A new message had arrived from her mother.

I need you to tell me something honestly. Did you and Daniel know the supplemental charges totaled $28,000 when you signed the agreement?

Tiffany's thumb hovered over the keyboard.

She could lie.

She could tell her mother she had been misled.

She could blame the event manager, the hotel, or Margaret.

But she remembered the moment Daniel had handed her the authorization forms two weeks earlier. She remembered the total printed at the bottom. She remembered saying, It's fine. Margaret will cover it.

And she remembered Daniel hesitating before signing.

He had asked whether they could afford the upgrades.

She had told him not to worry.

Tiffany began typing.

Yes.

She stared at the word.

Then she added another sentence.

I thought Margaret would pay.

Her mother replied almost immediately.

Then you need to stop blaming Margaret for refusing to pay a bill you knowingly agreed to.

Tiffany lowered the phone.

For the first time that night, her anger had nowhere convenient to go.

Outside the consultation room, a guest laughed nervously, and someone asked when the band would return.

Tiffany looked at Daniel.

He was standing near the door, staring at the floor.

"Are you going to leave me?"" she whispered.

He turned.

"I don't know what I'm going to do.""

That answer frightened her more than any accusation.

She stepped toward him.

"Daniel, I love you.""

He looked at her for a long moment.

"Then why did you think it was acceptable to hurt the person who raised me?""

Tiffany couldn't answer.

Before she could try, Denise knocked gently on the open door.

"The finance director has finished reviewing the first set of documents.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"And?""

Denise held out a printed statement.

"The outstanding balance remains twenty-eight thousand dollars. Your mother's guarantee applies to a limited portion of the charges, but the remaining amount is still your responsibility under the supplemental agreement.""

Tiffany looked at the paper.

Then she saw the second page.

It listed the names of the people who had signed the payment authorization.

Her own name.

Daniel's name.

And beneath them, a separate notation about the personal guarantees.

One line had been highlighted.

*PAYMENT RESPONSIBILITY: JOINT AND SEVERAL, SUBJECT TO THE SIGNED AGREEMENT.*

Daniel read it twice.

Tiffany's face drained of color.

Because the invoice was no longer just an embarrassing problem.

May you like

It was a legal obligation they had both signed.

And they had less than two hours before the payment deadline.
