Chapter 4: The Signature He Never Made

“Tell me exactly what she signed.””

David's voice was quiet, but the question seemed to suck all the air out of the bridal suite.

On the other end of the phone, Michael Reed paused.

“I need to be careful about what I disclose without verifying your identity,” the attorney said.

“But I can tell you this: a document was submitted to my office three weeks ago bearing your signature. It authorized a change to the ownership structure of the property you're purchasing.””

David stared at Brooke.

She was standing beside the dressing table, clutching the blue folder against her wedding gown. Her carefully arranged blonde updo remained perfect, but her face had lost every trace of the confident woman who had walked down the aisle that afternoon.

“What kind of change?”” David asked.

“The proposed revision would have placed the property under an arrangement controlled by your fiancée rather than the joint ownership structure we'd discussed. I flagged the signature because it didn't match the one on your earlier documents.””

David felt his stomach tighten.

“Did you contact Brooke?””

“I did. She told me you had approved the change and that you were too busy with wedding preparations to respond personally. I requested direct confirmation from you.””

“And?””

“I never received it.””

David closed his eyes for a moment.

Three weeks earlier, he'd been working late at the construction management firm where he'd finally built a stable career. Brooke had called him repeatedly about the house, complaining that the closing process was unnecessarily complicated.

He remembered sitting in his car outside his office, signing several documents she'd brought him.

He'd trusted her.

He'd signed where she pointed.

But the final paperwork had remained with the attorney.

“Michael,” David said, “I never authorized a change in ownership.””

“I understand. That's why I called.””

Brooke suddenly reached for the phone.

“Michael, this is completely out of context!””

David moved it away from her.

“Don't.””

Her eyes flashed.

“You don't understand what was happening!””

“Then explain it to me.””

She pressed her lips together.

On the phone, Michael continued, “David, I recommend that you do not sign any additional documents until we review everything together. I'll arrange a meeting as soon as possible.””

“Thank you. I'll call you tomorrow.””

David ended the call.

For several seconds, the only sound was the faint hum of the air-conditioning.

Then Brooke placed the blue folder on the table.

“Please sit down,” she said.

David remained standing.

“Why?””

“Because this is going to sound worse than it really is.””

“It's already bad enough.””

She looked toward the door, where Denise stood discreetly waiting. Tiana had joined her in the corridor, keeping her distance but watching with understandable concern.

Brooke lowered her voice.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

David stared at her.

“From what?””

“From losing everything if something happened between us.””

“We just got married.””

“Exactly!”” Brooke's voice cracked.

“We just got married, and you still don't understand how frightening that is for me.””

David rubbed a hand across his face.

“You wanted a house with me. I bought a house with you. What else were you afraid of losing?””

“My security.””

The answer came without hesitation.

David looked at the folder.

“So you decided to put the house under your control?””

“I wasn't stealing anything.””

“Then why did you use a signature I never gave you permission to use?””

Brooke looked down.

“I thought you'd agree.””

“You didn't ask.””

“You would have said no!””

The words burst out of her before she could stop them.

David went completely still.

Brooke covered her mouth.

For the first time that evening, her expression suggested she understood that she had revealed something more damaging than a missing document.

David spoke slowly.

“Why would I have said no?””

She shook her head.

“Because you always think you have to do everything yourself. You never think about what happens if you lose your job, or if the business fails, or if we can't afford the mortgage. You act like everything will be fine because you work hard.””

“I worked hard because I spent four months sleeping in a spare room after losing everything.””

“And I didn't want that happening to me!””

The words echoed through the small suite.

Brooke's eyes filled with tears.

“I grew up watching my mother beg my father for money. Every time he got angry, he'd threaten to throw her out. I promised myself I'd never be in that position.””

David's anger didn't disappear, but something in her confession made him pause.

He understood fear.

He understood what it meant to have nothing and wonder whether one bad month could send you back to the curb.

But understanding why someone was afraid didn't mean accepting what they'd done.

“You could have told me,” he said.

“I was embarrassed.””

“So you forged my signature?””

“I didn't think of it that way!””

“What did you think of it as?””

Brooke looked at him helplessly.

“I thought I was making sure I would always have a home.””

David glanced toward the doorway.

Tiana stood there with her hands clasped in front of her. She wasn't listening with the fascination of a guest looking for gossip. She looked like someone who had been forced to watch a familiar kind of injustice unfold.

David turned back to Brooke.

“You know what I remember about the first night Tiana let me stay with her?””

Brooke wiped her cheeks.

“Why are you bringing her into this?””

“Because she had almost nothing. She was working nights, taking classes during the day, and living in a small apartment where the heater barely worked.””

He paused.

“She gave me a key anyway.””

Brooke's jaw tightened.

“She didn't know whether I'd ever pay her back. She didn't know whether I'd become successful. She didn't ask me to put her name on anything.””

“I'm not Tiana!””

“No,” David said.

“You're not.””

The simple answer seemed to hurt her more than an insult would have.

Brooke turned away.

“You're making me sound like a monster.””

“I'm asking you to take responsibility.””

“And what happens if I do? Are you going to humiliate me in front of everyone? Are you going to leave me standing in that ballroom while our families whisper about me?””

David looked at the white gown, the expensive jewelry, the perfect makeup now streaked with tears.

He remembered the woman he'd fallen in love with—or thought he had.

He remembered her bringing him coffee when he worked late, sitting beside him during the exhausting search for their first house, and laughing with him over takeout on evenings when they couldn't afford anything better.

Were those moments real?

Or had he simply overlooked everything that didn't fit the version of Brooke he wanted to believe in?

“I don't know what happens next,” he said honestly.

Brooke stared at him.

“You can't be serious.””

“I am.””

“You married me less than an hour ago!””

“And I learned something about you less than an hour ago.””

She shook her head violently.

“You're going to throw away our marriage because of paperwork?””

David looked at the blue folder.

“No. I'm trying to understand whether the marriage I believed I was entering is the one you intended.””

A sudden sob escaped her.

Then she grabbed the folder and pulled out another document.

“Fine,” she said.

“You want to see everything? Look at this.””

She shoved the page toward him.

At the top was the name of a financial institution.

Below it were figures David didn't immediately recognize.

Then he saw the amount.

*$38,500.*

His eyes narrowed.

“What is this?””

Brooke's hands shook.

“It's a personal loan.””

“Whose loan?””

She didn't answer.

David read the page again.

His name appeared beneath the heading for the proposed guarantor.

The signature looked almost identical to his.

Almost.

“Brooke,” he said, “why is my name on a loan application?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then a voice sounded from the corridor.

“Because she told me you'd already agreed to pay it.””

David turned.

May you like

Tiana was standing in the doorway, her face pale.

And she was looking directly at Brooke.
