Chapter 8: The Promise Made Before the Wedding

The police took Marcus away before noon.

He didn't resist. He didn't shout or threaten anyone. He simply walked toward the waiting vehicle with his hands restrained, wearing the same expression he'd worn throughout their confrontation.

A man who believed he could still negotiate his way out of anything.

Diane arrived twenty minutes later.

She had called Vanessa repeatedly, but nobody had answered. When she saw the police vehicles, she hurried toward the cemetery entrance, her burgundy coat hanging open and her silver bob slightly disheveled.

"Vanessa!""

Vanessa turned.

"Mom.""

Diane reached her daughter and grabbed both her arms.

"What have you done?""

Vanessa stared at her.

"What have I done?""

Diane lowered her voice.

"Not here. We need to leave.""

An officer stepped between them.

"Ma'am, I need you to remain here. We have questions about several financial documents.""

Diane's face hardened.

"This is a misunderstanding.""

"Then you can explain that to us.""

Diane looked toward Daniel.

"You did this.""

Daniel stood beside Evelyn, holding her hand.

"No. You did this when you decided my mother was an obstacle instead of a person.""

Diane's lips pressed together.

"You have no idea what we've been through.""

"Then explain it.""

She looked away.

The officer asked her to accompany him to the nearby station for questioning. Diane protested, but eventually followed him toward the vehicle.

Vanessa remained behind.

Daniel turned toward her.

"You said my father spoke to your mother before our wedding.""

She nodded.

"What exactly did he tell her?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"I don't know everything.""

"Tell me what you do know.""

She looked at Evelyn.

"Can we speak somewhere private?""

Evelyn's expression remained guarded.

Daniel answered for her.

"You can speak here, or you can speak to the police. But I'm not taking my mother somewhere she doesn't feel safe.""

Vanessa lowered her head.

"Here, then.""

They moved to a wooden bench beneath the oak tree. Evelyn sat beside Daniel, and Vanessa took the opposite end, leaving a careful distance between them.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she began.

"My mother knew your father through the hospital.""

Daniel frowned.

"My father died before you and I met.""

"I know.""

"Then how did she know him?""

Vanessa looked at her hands.

"She worked in hospital administration for several years. She handled billing disputes, patient assistance programs, and financial arrangements. Your father came to her when he wanted to establish the trust.""

Evelyn looked up.

"I never knew that.""

"Your father didn't want the arrangement discussed publicly," Vanessa said.

"He wanted to make sure you and Daniel were protected.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Protected from what?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"He believed someone might eventually challenge the inheritance. He had discovered irregularities in a financial account connected to one of his former business partners.""

"Who was the business partner?""

"Marcus Bell.""

Daniel stared at her.

"What?""

"Your father knew Marcus years before he died. Marcus had helped manage some investments. When your father discovered money missing, he began investigating.""

Evelyn's hand flew to her mouth.

"Your father never told me.""

"He probably didn't want to frighten you," Vanessa said.

"He told my mother that if anything happened to him, the trust needed to remain protected. He asked her to keep the documents safe.""

Daniel looked at the headstone.

His father had been a quiet man, careful with money and reluctant to burden his family with his worries. He could imagine him trying to solve the problem alone, believing he had enough time to put everything in order.

"What happened to the documents?"" Daniel asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

"Some were stored with a lawyer. Others were kept by my mother. She said your father had given her a sealed envelope and told her not to open it unless someone tried to interfere with the trust.""

"Did she open it?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Before our wedding.""

Daniel sat back.

"Why?""

"Because Marcus contacted her. He said your father's estate was worth more than anyone realized. He told her there was a hidden account, and that the trust could be challenged if the right documents were produced.""

Evelyn's voice was sharp.

"Your mother knew what Marcus was doing?""

Vanessa looked at her.

"Not at first. He told her he was trying to recover money your father had lost. He convinced her that if she helped him, he could return the money he'd taken from her investments.""

"How much had she invested?"" Daniel asked.

"Two hundred thousand dollars.""

The amount matched Vanessa's earlier confession.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"So Marcus took your mother's money, then convinced her to help him take mine.""

Vanessa nodded.

"And my mother thought she could recover everything by cooperating.""

Evelyn shook her head slowly.

"That doesn't explain why you married Daniel.""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"No," she whispered.

"It doesn't.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Then explain it.""

She took a long breath.

"My mother told me about the trust before we got married. She said your father had left a protected inheritance and that you would eventually control it. She told me the money was supposed to remain untouched until you were established.""

"How did she know the details?""

"She had seen some of the paperwork.""

"And she told you to marry me?""

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

"Not exactly.""

"Then what did she tell you?""

"She told me that if I loved you, I should never let anyone interfere with your inheritance. She said your father had worked hard to protect you.""

Daniel watched her carefully.

"That sounds reasonable.""

"It did at the time.""

"What changed?""

Vanessa looked toward the cemetery entrance.

"Marcus started calling. He said your father's former business partner had died, and that the investment records were about to be destroyed. He said he needed access to the trust before the evidence disappeared.""

Daniel frowned.

"Why would he need access to my mother's bank account?""

"He said it was connected to the original investment.""

"Was it?""

"I don't know.""

"Vanessa, you've used that answer a lot.""

She lowered her head.

"Because I didn't ask enough questions.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa continued.

"After we married, my mother told me Marcus had discovered a way to access the funds. He said we could borrow some of the money temporarily, recover her investment, and replace everything before anyone noticed.""

Daniel's voice was cold.

"And you agreed.""

"Yes.""

"Did you know my mother would be threatened?""

"No.""

"Did you know she would be isolated in her bedroom?""

Vanessa began crying.

"Not at first.""

"At what point did you know?""

She covered her mouth.

Daniel waited.

"About three months ago," she whispered.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Three months.

Three months of eating alone. Three months of being told she was difficult, confused, or ungrateful. Three months of watching the people she loved turn against her while the woman who had promised to care for her made excuses.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"Why didn't you stop?""

"Because by then the money was gone.""

"Some of it was still in the account.""

"Marcus told me he'd lose everything if we didn't finish the transfer. He said the documents had already been filed and that if I backed out, he'd make it look as though I'd planned the entire scheme.""

"So you let him blame your mother.""

Vanessa shook her head desperately.

"I thought I could fix it.""

"By making her look incapable?""

"I didn't want that to happen.""

"But you knew about the assessment.""

Vanessa stared at the ground.

"Yes.""

Daniel felt a sharp ache in his chest.

"Did you help arrange it?""

She nodded.

Evelyn stood abruptly.

Daniel reached for her, but she stepped away.

"Mom?""

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

"You sat at my table.""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"I know.""

"You held my hand when I was frightened about my memory. You told me you would help me keep everything organized.""

"I know.""

"You called me family.""

Vanessa began to sob.

"I am sorry.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"Do you know what I used to pray for?""

Vanessa looked up.

"I prayed that Daniel would marry someone who loved him enough to tell him the truth, even when it hurt. I thought you were that person.""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Evelyn continued.

"I wasn't asking you to love me as your mother. I wasn't asking you to replace anybody. I only wanted to be treated with kindness.""

Vanessa reached toward her.

Evelyn stepped back.

"Please don't touch me.""

Vanessa withdrew her hand.

The words seemed to drain the last of her strength.

Daniel stood and helped his mother toward the car.

Before they left, Vanessa called after him.

"Daniel, please. I need you to understand one more thing.""

He turned.

"Your father didn't just leave you money.""

Daniel stared at her.

"What else did he leave?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"A letter.""

Evelyn froze.

"What letter?""

"Marcus told my mother that the letter contained the name of the person who had helped your father discover the missing money. He said if that name became public, several people could be implicated.""

Daniel felt his pulse quicken.

"Where is it?""

"I don't know.""

"Then why are you telling me about it?""

"Because Marcus said he would destroy it if you didn't cooperate.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Why would he need to threaten me if he already had the money?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because the letter wasn't just about the money.""

She looked toward the grave.

"It contained a confession.""

Daniel felt the cold wind move through his shirt.

"Whose confession?""

Vanessa's eyes met his.

"Your father's.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"No. Your father would never have hidden something like that from me.""

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"He didn't hide it from you. He hid it because he was afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.""

Daniel stared at her.

"What truth?""

Vanessa took a deep breath.

"Your father knew Marcus was stealing from him. But he also knew somebody in his own family was helping.""

Daniel's mouth went dry.

"Who?""

Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

Then back at him.

"My mother says the person who helped Marcus was someone your father trusted more than anyone else.""

Evelyn slowly sat back down on the bench.

For the first time that morning, she looked genuinely terrified.

"That isn't possible," she whispered.

Daniel turned toward her.

"Mom?""

She stared at the headstone.

Then she spoke so quietly that he almost didn't hear her.

"Your father had one brother.""

Daniel frowned.

"I know. Uncle Thomas died when I was young.""

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes. But Thomas wasn't the only person your father considered family.""

Daniel waited.

His mother looked up, tears shining in her eyes.

"Before he married me, your father had a sister he never spoke about.""

Daniel felt the world tilt.

"A sister?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Her name was Rebecca.""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel looked between them.

"Why have I never heard of her?""

Evelyn's voice broke.

"Because your father believed she was dead.""

A distant siren rose and faded beyond the cemetery gates.

Daniel stared at the grave, trying to understand how another secret could possibly fit into the life he'd thought he knew.

May you like

Then Vanessa whispered the words that made his blood run cold.

"Marcus told my mother that Rebecca is alive.""
