The Door She Refused to Open / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Woman Who Called It Discipline

The paramedics arrived within minutes.

Those minutes felt like hours.

I sat on the bathroom floor with Ben in my arms, following every instruction the dispatcher gave me. Lily stayed pressed against my side, one hand clutching my shirt so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

Vanessa remained downstairs.

She didn't ask to see her nephew.

She didn't ask whether he was breathing.

She didn't even come to the doorway.

When the paramedics rushed in, one knelt beside Ben while another checked his condition. I moved back only when they told me to, and even then, I refused to let go of his little hand until they needed room to work.

“Sir, we need space,” one paramedic said gently.

“I'm his father.””

“I understand. We need to help him.””

I swallowed hard and moved aside.

Lily caught my wrist.

“Daddy, don't let them take him away.””

“They're taking him to help him, baby.””

“But what if he gets scared?””

I knelt in front of her.

“Then he'll know we're coming with him. I'm not leaving him.””

Her lips trembled.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

The paramedics carried Ben downstairs on a stretcher. I followed them, keeping pace until one of them assured me that I could ride with him.

As we passed the living room, I saw Vanessa standing beside the fireplace.

She had picked up a decorative cushion and was straightening it.

Straightening a cushion.

My son had nearly drowned, and she was arranging furniture.

I stopped.

“What are you doing?””

Vanessa glanced at me.

“Trying to keep this house from turning into a disaster.””

I stared at her.

“You locked a four-year-old in a bathroom with a full bathtub.””

Her expression hardened.

“I did not put him in the bathtub.””

“You left him behind a locked door while he was in danger.””

“He should have listened.””

The paramedic beside me turned his head.

I felt my entire body go cold.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa set the cushion down carefully.

“Ben was throwing a tantrum. He wouldn't listen when I told him to stay out of my things. Lily kept interfering. I needed them both to understand that actions have consequences.””

“You thought nearly drowning my son was a lesson?””

“I never said that.””

“You said he needed to learn!””

She raised her chin.

“Children need boundaries, Marcus. Someone has to enforce them.””

I took one step toward her.

The paramedic immediately placed a steadying hand on my shoulder.

“Sir, your son needs you.””

Those words stopped me.

Not because I had forgiven Vanessa.

Because Ben needed his father more than Vanessa needed to hear what I thought of her.

I turned away.

“Stay away from my children,” I told her.

Then I followed the paramedics out.

At the hospital, time became a series of doors opening and closing.

A nurse took Ben from my arms. A doctor asked questions. Someone wrapped a blanket around Lily, who had begun shivering in the waiting room.

I sat beside her with my elbows on my knees.

My hands wouldn't stop trembling.

Lily stared at the hospital floor.

“Daddy?””

“I'm here.””

“Is Ben mad at me?””

I turned toward her.

“Why would he be mad at you?””

“Because I didn't get the door open.””

My heart broke so suddenly that I had to look away for a moment.

I pulled her into my arms.

“Listen to me, Lily. You did everything you could. You tried to get help.

You called for me. You were brave when you were scared.””

“But Aunt Vanessa said I was being bad.””

“Your aunt was wrong.””

Lily's eyes filled again.

“She said if I told you, you'd send her away.””

I went still.

“What exactly did she say?””

Lily rubbed the edge of the blanket between her fingers.

“She told me that you were already angry with her. She said if I made trouble, she'd tell you I hurt Ben.””

The noise of the hospital seemed to fade.

“She said you would believe her because she's an adult.””

I stared at my daughter.

“How long has she been saying things like that to you?””

Lily hesitated.

“Since Mommy went away.””

My wife, Danielle, had been visiting her mother in Ohio for the past four days. Her mother had undergone surgery, and Danielle had wanted to help with her recovery.

Vanessa had volunteered to stay with the children while I worked and Danielle traveled.

I had thought I was accepting a favor.

Instead, I had opened my front door to someone who had been frightening my children when I wasn't there.

“Why didn't you tell me?”” I whispered.

Lily looked ashamed.

“Because she said you would be disappointed in me.””

I held her closer.

“Baby, look at me.””

She raised her eyes.

“You never have to protect an adult from the consequences of hurting you. Not your aunt. Not anybody.””

She nodded, but I could tell she was still afraid.

A doctor appeared at the end of the hallway.

I stood so quickly that Lily's blanket slipped to the floor.

“How is my son?””

The doctor explained that Ben was receiving treatment and needed close observation. There were serious concerns after a near-drowning, and they would monitor him carefully. He wasn't out of danger yet.

I thanked him, though the words barely came out.

Then I sat beside Lily again and held her hand.

For the first time since breaking down that bathroom door, I allowed myself to imagine what might have happened if I had stayed in the kitchen another five minutes.

Or ten.

Or if Lily had believed Vanessa's threats and remained silent.

My phone buzzed.

Danielle.

I answered immediately.

“Marcus? What's wrong? I just got three missed calls from the hospital.””

I closed my eyes.

“Danielle, you need to come home.””

“What happened?””

“Ben nearly drowned.””

There was a long silence.

Then her voice cracked.

“What do you mean, nearly drowned?””

“He was in the bathtub. The bathroom door was locked. Lily found him.””

“Oh my God. Is he alive?””

“He's being treated. We're waiting for the doctors to tell us more.””

“Where's Vanessa?””

I looked through the glass partition toward the waiting room entrance.

“She was there.””

“What?””

“She was in the house. Lily says Vanessa knew Ben was in the bathroom.””

Danielle began crying.

“No. Marcus, no. She wouldn't—”

“She told me he needed to learn a lesson.””

My wife stopped crying.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“No, I heard you. I'm asking what she said.””

I repeated the words.

For several seconds, Danielle said nothing.

Then she whispered, “I need to tell you something.””

I straightened.

“What?””

“Before I left, Vanessa called me. She said Lily was jealous of Ben and that she was becoming aggressive with him.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What are you talking about?””

“She said Lily had pushed him. She said she was worried the children couldn't be left alone together.””

I looked through the glass at my daughter.

Lily was sitting quietly, her small feet dangling above the floor.

“She was trying to make us suspicious of Lily,” I said.

Danielle's breathing turned uneven.

“I thought she was worried. I thought she was trying to help.””

“Did you tell her anything about our family? About the house? About our schedules?””

“I told her what she needed to know to look after the kids.””

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

“Danielle, I need you to listen carefully. Something is very wrong.””

“I'll be on the next flight.””

“Don't call Vanessa.””

“Marcus—”

“Please. Not until we know what's happening.””

She agreed, but before we hung up, she said something that made the room feel colder.

“Marcus, when I told Vanessa I was coming home early tomorrow, she asked me if the children would be alone with you tonight.””

I frowned.

“Why would she ask that?””

“I don't know.””

The call ended.

I stood in the hospital corridor, staring at my phone.

Then I remembered something else.

Three days earlier, I had come home unexpectedly during my lunch break. Vanessa had been in the living room, standing beside my desk.

She had claimed she was looking for a charging cable.

At the time, I hadn't thought anything of it.

Now I remembered the way she'd quickly closed my laptop.

I remembered the questions she'd asked about my work schedule.

And I remembered that she had wanted to know exactly when Danielle planned to return.

My phone buzzed again.

A message from an unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

*Marcus, don't let Vanessa leave the house. Check your home security footage before you trust anything she tells you.*

I read it twice.

May you like

Then a second message arrived.

*Your daughter isn't the only person she's been lying to.*
