Chapter 2: The Recording
My father had a particular way of becoming angry.
He didn't shout immediately. He became quiet first.
His shoulders squared. His lips pressed into a thin line. The muscles in his jaw tightened until a small indentation appeared beside his cheek.
I had seen that expression when a contractor cheated him out of three weeks of pay. I had seen it when a teacher accused me of stealing money I had earned honestly. And I had seen it once when a stranger followed me home from the bus stop.
Every time, Dad had done the same thing.
He gathered the facts before he acted.
That morning, he took one look at the camera and pulled out his phone.
“Danielle, stay beside me,” he said.
“I am.””
He opened the security app. The familiar blue-and-white interface appeared, showing the front porch, the kitchen, the garage, and my bedroom.
He tapped my room.
A loading circle spun.
Vanessa stepped into the doorway.
“Marcus, you're frightening her.””
Dad didn't look up.
“Then you should have thought about that before locking her in a room.””
“I didn't lock her in. She was upset, and I was trying to calm her down.””
I stared at her.
“You turned the key from the outside.””
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Because you were shouting and throwing things.””
“I threw nothing!””
“Enough,” Dad said.
The single word silenced both of us.
He tapped the playback icon.
A timeline appeared across the screen. Several motion markers were clustered around the time I had first started pounding on the door.
Dad selected the earliest recording.
The camera showed the bedroom in its normal state. My gown hung from the closet door. Sunlight crossed the carpet. A few minutes later, Vanessa entered the room.
On the recording, she walked directly to my dresser.
She opened the top drawer.
She removed my phone charger.
Then she took my phone from the bedside table, studied the screen, and carried it out with her.
My stomach tightened.
“You took my phone?””
Vanessa shrugged.
“You were distracted by it.””
Dad paused the video.
“Why?””
“She wouldn't stop messaging people.””
“Who was she messaging?””
“I don't know, Marcus. I'm not her keeper.””
Dad resumed playback.
A few minutes later, Vanessa returned. She closed the curtains, walked to the door, and stepped into the hallway.
The image shook slightly as she reached back and turned the lock.
Then came my voice.
“Vanessa? Why is the door locked?””
The recording caught her response clearly.
“Because you're not going anywhere until you learn to respect this family.””
My father's fingers tightened around the phone.
I could hear my own voice rising in desperation.
“My graduation starts in twenty minutes!””
“And you won't be attending.””
Vanessa flinched.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Dad looked up from the screen.
“Care to explain that?””
She folded her arms.
“You're taking a private disagreement out of context.””
“A private disagreement?”” he repeated.
“You locked my daughter in her bedroom on the morning of her graduation.””
“She was being unreasonable!””
“How?””
“She refused to listen to me!””
“Listen to what?””
Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it again.
For the first time since I could remember, she had no immediate answer.
Dad returned to the camera timeline.
“There's another recording,” I said.
“I heard her talking when she came back.””
Vanessa's eyes snapped toward me.
“Danielle, stop.””
I pointed at the phone.
“Play the one from a few minutes ago.””
My father selected the later motion marker.
The footage showed the hallway outside my room. Vanessa stood with her back to the camera, speaking on her cell phone.
At first, the audio was faint.
Dad raised the volume.
Then her voice came through the speaker, clear enough to fill the room.
“The plan is working,” Vanessa said.
“Finalize the cancellation before her father interferes.””
My blood ran cold.
Dad didn't move.
On the screen, Vanessa paced in front of my locked door, tapping one manicured fingernail against her phone.
“No, she doesn't know yet,” she continued.
“Marcus thinks everything is arranged. Once the cancellation goes through, there's nothing she can do about it.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa laughed.
“Exactly. By the time he figures out what happened, it'll be too late.””
The recording ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The muffled commencement announcement drifted through the open bedroom door.
Somewhere in the distance, an audience applauded.
I looked at my father.
His face had changed.
The worry was still there, but something harder had settled beneath it.
“What cancellation?”” he asked.
Vanessa took one step backward.
“Marcus, you don't understand what you heard.””
“Then help me understand.””
“It was a business matter.””
“What business matter?””
“It's complicated.””
“Try me.””
She glanced toward the phone, then toward the hallway.
I suddenly noticed how carefully she had dressed that morning. The silk blouse. The gold earrings Dad had given her for their anniversary. The cream-colored handbag resting on her arm.
She had looked like a woman preparing to attend a celebration.
Now she looked like someone searching for an exit.
“Danielle has been under a lot of stress,” Vanessa said.
“She's misinterpreting everything because she wants to blame me for her problems.””
I stared at her.
“You told someone to cancel something before Dad interfered.””
“That's not what I said.””
“It's exactly what you said.””
Vanessa turned toward my father.
“Marcus, please. You know how ambitious she is. She gets obsessed with things. She doesn't understand how the real world works.””
Dad lowered the phone.
“Don't talk about her like that.””
“I am trying to protect this family!””
“From what?””
“From a decision that could ruin us!””
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Dad went completely still.
I felt the room change.
“What decision?”” he asked.
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
“I'm not discussing this while she's standing here.””
“She's my daughter. She lives in this house. And apparently, whatever you're talking about concerns her.””
“You're making a mistake.””
“Maybe,” Dad said.
“But I'm going to make it with the facts in front of me.””
He saved the recording to his phone.
Then he sent a copy to his email.
Then he took a screenshot of the timeline.
Vanessa watched every movement.
“Why are you doing that?”” she demanded.
“Because I want a record of what happened.””
“You're treating me like a criminal!””
“You locked a young woman in a room and discussed canceling something behind her back. Forgive me if I'm asking questions.””
I reached for Dad's hand.
“I'm scared.””
His expression softened immediately.
“I know, baby.””
He pulled me against his side.
“You're not going anywhere alone today. Do you understand?””
I nodded.
Vanessa's eyes glistened, but there were no tears on her cheeks.
“You're choosing her over me.””
Dad stared at her as if he couldn't recognize the woman standing in front of him.
“This isn't a competition, Vanessa.””
“It always has been.””
Her voice was low enough that I almost missed it.
Then she turned toward the hallway.
Dad stepped between her and the door.
“Where are you going?””
“To get my purse.””
“Why?””
“Because I need air.””
“You can get your purse after you tell me what cancellation you were talking about.””
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she smiled.
It was a small, brittle smile that didn't reach her eyes.
“You really should have let that recording stay buried.””
My father didn't blink.
“Buried where?””
Vanessa's smile vanished.
She looked at me, and for the first time, I understood that she wasn't simply angry about my graduation.
She was afraid of what might happen if my father discovered the truth.
Dad held up his phone.
“Who were you talking to?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Instead, she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
She held it tightly between two fingers.
“This is what you want to know?”” she asked.
Dad glanced at the paper.
“What is it?””
She unfolded it just enough for me to see a logo at the top.
My university's name.
Beneath it was a bold heading.
*ENROLLMENT STATUS: CANCELLATION PENDING.*
My knees nearly gave out.
“No,” I whispered.
Dad took a step toward her.
“Give me that paper.””
Vanessa clutched it to her chest.
“You have no idea what she did.””
“What did she do?””
Her eyes shifted to me.
May you like
And then she said the words that made my entire body go cold.
“Ask your daughter why the university received a request to cancel her graduation.””
