Chapter 6: The Man Who Betrayed Me

I drove the last mile home myself.

Thomas sat beside me, speaking urgently into his radio while our security team searched the property. My hands were tight around the steering wheel. Every red light felt like a personal insult. Every second stretched into something unbearable.

When we reached the gates, I didn't wait for them to open fully.

I drove through.

The front door stood wide open.

“Caleb!”” I shouted as I ran inside.

A housekeeper emerged from the kitchen, pale and trembling.

“Mr. Brooks, I don't know what happened. I was in the pantry, and then—”

“Where is my son?””

“I thought he was with Miss Carter.””

I stopped.

“Where's Vanessa?””

“She left about fifteen minutes ago.””

I ran upstairs.

Caleb's bedroom was empty.

His blanket had been pulled back. The stuffed rabbit lay on the floor. One of the windows stood open, and the curtains moved in the breeze.

I crossed the room in three strides.

A small muddy footprint marked the windowsill.

Thomas appeared behind me.

“Sir, the west garden camera is down.””

“Find him!””

“We're checking the perimeter.””

I turned toward the hallway.

“Call the police. Now.””

Thomas nodded and rushed away.

I searched every room myself. The nursery. The playroom.

The guest bedrooms. The closets. I called Caleb's name until my throat hurt.

Then I found something on the floor beside the staircase.

A small gold watch.

The one Vanessa had tried to give him at dinner.

Its clasp was broken.

I picked it up.

On the back, someone had engraved a single letter.

*C.*

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered so quickly that I nearly dropped it.

“Where is my son?””

“I don't know, Daniel.””

“Someone took him!””

“I know.””

The calmness in Marcus's voice frightened me more than shouting would have.

“How do you know?””

“Because Vanessa called me.””

I closed my eyes.

“What did she tell you?””

“She said you had found the records.””

“And?””

“She said she couldn't control what happened next.””

I gripped the phone so hard my fingers hurt.

“Marcus, if you know where Caleb is, I swear to God—”

“I don't know where he is,” Marcus interrupted.

“But I know who arranged the original transfer. And I know why Vanessa is desperate to keep you from finding the child.””

“Tell me.””

“Meet me at the warehouse.””

“My son is missing!””

“And if you want to find him, you need to understand what happened to his sister.””

I wanted to scream at him.

Instead, I forced myself to listen.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa isn't the person who made the final decision.””

“Who did?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he said, “Her mother.””

The name meant nothing to me.

Vanessa had told me her parents were dead. She had shown me photographs of an elderly woman she claimed was her grandmother, but she had never spoken about a mother.

“Her mother is alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“I don't know her current address. But she has people who can make records disappear, buy silence, and move children without leaving a trace.””

I looked toward the open bedroom window.

“Why would she want Caleb?””

“Because Caleb is the only person who can connect Elise's first child to the family.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“That's nonsense.””

“Is it? Think about the lullaby. Think about the locket.

Think about the photograph. Elise didn't leave those things behind by accident. She was trying to make sure her children could find each other.””

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

Marcus's voice broke.

“Because she was afraid of what you'd do when you learned the truth.””

I stared at the empty bed.

“What truth?””

He was silent for so long that I thought the call had dropped.

Then he said, “Daniel, Elise's daughter wasn't the only child whose identity was changed.””

My breath caught.

“What are you saying?””

“Come to the warehouse. I'll explain everything.””

I ended the call and turned to Thomas.

“I'm leaving.””

“Sir, the police are on their way.””

“Stay here. Find Caleb. Do not let anyone leave the property without being questioned.””

Thomas grabbed my arm.

“Mr. Brooks, if Vanessa is involved, you shouldn't go alone.””

“I won't be alone.””

I looked toward Grace, who had arrived with the security team. Her face was white with fear, but her voice was steady.

“I'll come with you.””

I shook my head.

“No. Whoever took Caleb may be watching you too.””

“That's exactly why I need to go.””

“Grace—”

“My mother spent her life trying to protect Elise's children. I'm not going to hide while someone else gets hurt.””

I stared at her.

Then I nodded.

We drove to the warehouse together.

It stood in an industrial district beyond the city center, a low brick building with broken windows and a rusted metal door. Rain had begun to fall, tapping against the windshield.

Marcus waited inside beneath a single hanging light.

He looked older than he had that morning.

His tie was loosened, his shirt collar damp with sweat, and his hands shook as he placed a thick folder on an old wooden table.

“Where is Caleb?”” I demanded.

“I don't know.””

I grabbed his jacket.

“You knew about Elise's daughter for six years before I met her. You watched me marry her. You stood beside me at her funeral.

You helped me raise my son. And you expect me to believe you don't know where my child is?””

Marcus didn't resist.

“I deserve your anger.””

“You deserve worse.””

“I know.””

I released him.

“Start talking.””

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were hospital records, legal documents, photographs, and a series of letters written by Elise.

He pushed the first page toward me.

“This is the original birth certificate.””

I looked down.

The name of the mother was Elise Brooks.

The child's name was Lily.

And the father's name was blank.

I stared at the document.

“Who was the father?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Not me.””

“I didn't ask if it was you.””

He looked at me.

“The father was a man Elise knew before she met you. A man who disappeared after learning she was pregnant.””

I felt a strange mixture of relief and fury.

“Why did Vanessa take the baby?””

“Her mother believed the child was an embarrassment. She wanted Vanessa to marry into a powerful family, and Elise's daughter threatened that plan.””

“That doesn't explain why the child was taken.””

“Vanessa's mother arranged a private guardianship through a lawyer she controlled. She told Elise that the baby had died shortly after birth. She forged documents and paid people to keep the truth buried.””

“And you helped her?””

Marcus flinched.

“I tried to stop her.””

“Then why is your name on the photograph?””

“Because Elise came to me for help. She knew I had connections in Savannah. I promised to get the baby back.””

“But you didn't.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I was twenty-eight. I was terrified. Vanessa's mother threatened to destroy my family and have me arrested for falsifying documents. I convinced myself I could fix everything later.””

“Later?””

Marcus looked down.

“Later became six years.””

I stared at him with a hatred I had never imagined feeling.

“You let Elise believe her daughter was dead.””

“I tried to tell her the truth.””

“When?””

“Three months before she died.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

Marcus pulled another letter from the folder.

It was written in Elise's handwriting.

Marcus,

I know Lily is alive. I saw her today.

I know what Vanessa's mother did, and I know you've been trying to help me. But I can't bring Daniel into this until I know the child is safe.

If anything happens to me, please make sure Caleb knows he has a sister.

Please don't let them take him too.

I read the final line again.

Then I looked up.

“What happened three months before Elise died?””

Marcus swallowed.

“She was trying to meet Lily. She had arranged to see the woman who was raising her.””

“Did she succeed?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't she bring the child home?””

“Because the woman refused to release her.””

I stepped closer.

“Who was raising Lily?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he reached into the folder and pulled out a photograph.

It showed a little girl standing in front of a grand white house. She had dark curls, warm brown skin, and eyes that looked so much like Elise's that my chest hurt.

The child was about six years old.

Beside her stood Vanessa.

Her hand rested on the girl's shoulder.

I stared at the photograph.

“That's Lily?””

Marcus nodded.

“Vanessa raised her.””

I couldn't breathe.

The woman who had spent months trying to become Caleb's mother had been raising Elise's daughter all along.

But the next question was worse.

“Why did Elise die?””

Marcus looked at me.

His eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know whether Vanessa's mother caused the accident. I only know that Elise was planning to expose the entire arrangement, and the night before she died, she called me and said she had found proof.””

“What proof?””

“A recording.””

“Where is it?””

Marcus pointed to the folder.

“It's on a flash drive. Elise gave it to me the week before the accident. I never listened to the entire thing.””

I snatched the drive from his hand and inserted it into an old laptop on the table.

A video opened.

Elise appeared on the screen, sitting in a dimly lit room. Her hair was tied back, and her face looked exhausted.

“Daniel,” she whispered, looking directly into the camera, “if you're watching this, it means I couldn't tell you the truth in person.””

My knees nearly buckled.

She took a breath.

“I need you to know that I never stopped looking for Lily. I never stopped loving her. And I never stopped trying to bring her home.””

A noise came from behind her.

Elise turned sharply toward the door.

Then a woman's voice spoke from somewhere off camera.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Elise's face went pale.

The recording shook.

And then, before the screen went black, I heard a voice I recognized.

Vanessa's voice.

“Give me the evidence, Elise. Or you'll lose both your children.””

The video ended.

I stood frozen before the laptop.

Grace was crying silently beside me.

Marcus looked as though he might collapse.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered without speaking.

A little girl's voice came through the line.

“Daddy?””

My heart stopped.

It was a child's voice, trembling and frightened.

“Daddy, please come get me.””

I gripped the table.

“Lily?””

A sob.

“That's what Mommy called me.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where are you, sweetheart?””

“I don't know. I'm in a big house. There's a lady here, but she says I can't talk to you.””

“What's the lady's name?””

The child whispered, “Grandma.””

A door slammed somewhere on her end.

Then Vanessa's voice came through the phone.

“Daniel, if you want both your children alive, you'll do exactly what I say.””

The call ended.

On the laptop, Elise's frozen face stared back at me.

And for the first time since my wife's death, I understood the true horror of what had happened.

Elise hadn't simply left behind a secret.

May you like

Someone had spent years making sure her children could never find each other.

Now that I had finally heard the truth, that person was holding both my children hostage.
