Chapter 8: The Promise Renee Made
The meeting took place at 10:00 a.m.
Daniel arrived early, carrying the letter Renee had left behind and the photograph of the two women outside the house.
Ms. Harper met him in the reception area and led him to a small room with a round table, three chairs, and a digital recorder placed inside a clear evidence bag.
A second professional sat near the window.
Daniel recognized her from the previous meeting.
“Good morning,” Ms. Harper said.
He nodded.
“Please tell me what Renee said.””
Ms. Harper waited until he was seated.
“We've completed an initial review of the recording. Because it may contain information relevant to the circumstances surrounding your wife's death, the original is being preserved. We can discuss the portions that are appropriate to share with you and explain the next steps.””
Daniel clasped his hands together.
“I'm ready.””
Ms. Harper placed a transcript on the table.
“This is a transcript of a section addressed directly to Aaliyah. We will not play the original recording today, but we can review the transcript with you.””
Daniel looked down at the first page.
Renee's words had been typed in plain black letters.
He began reading.
My sweet Aaliyah, if you ever hear this, I want you to know that you were the best thing that ever happened to me.
Daniel stopped.
He pressed his thumb against the edge of the paper.
He could hear Renee saying the words in his mind, her voice soft and playful as she used to speak to their daughter.
He continued.
You may grow up hearing different stories about me. Some people may tell you I was sick, or that I worried too much, or that I misunderstood things. I want you to know that you are allowed to ask questions.
His eyes filled with tears.
You are allowed to remember me. You are allowed to miss me. And you are never responsible for making the adults around you feel better about something that hurts you.
Daniel lowered the transcript.
It was the same message Ms. Brooks had tried to teach Aaliyah.
The same message he had failed to protect.
“Is there more?”” he asked.
Ms. Harper nodded.
“There is.””
He returned to the page.
There are things I cannot explain to you while you are little. I have written down what I know and kept the records somewhere safe. If you ever need answers, I hope the adults who love you will help you find them.
Daniel turned to the next page.
Renee mentioned the locked room.
She explained that she had stored personal papers and a recording there because she wanted them preserved. She referred to a document connected to Aaliyah's future care and asked that it not be destroyed or altered.
Then came a passage that made Daniel's hands tremble.
If something happens to me before I can explain everything, please do not assume that the first story you hear is the only story.
He stopped reading.
“Did she say what she was afraid of?””
Ms. Harper answered carefully.
“The recording contains concerns about disagreements in the household and about who should have access to certain records. Those concerns are being examined. We cannot conclude from the recording alone that anyone caused her death.””
Daniel stared at her.
“I understand.””
But he barely did.
He had spent five years believing the matter was settled.
Now he was being told that Renee herself had left instructions warning the people who loved her not to accept the first explanation.
He looked back at the transcript.
“Can I ask you something?””
“Of course.””
“Did she say Monique's name?””
Ms. Harper paused.
“The recording includes references to Monique. We are not going to interpret those references without examining the surrounding evidence.””
Daniel leaned back.
He wanted to demand more.
Instead, he looked down at the transcript and kept reading.
Near the end, Renee spoke directly to Aaliyah again.
When you are old enough, I hope someone will let you hear my voice without making you feel that loving me is a betrayal of anyone else.
Daniel covered his mouth.
For five years, he had told himself that he was helping Aaliyah move forward by keeping memories of Renee out of everyday life.
He had packed away photographs.
He had stopped making the pancakes she loved.
He had allowed Monique to decide which stories were appropriate and which were too painful.
He had believed he was protecting his daughter.
But Renee had understood something he had not.
A child could be hurt by the truth.
A child could also be hurt by being denied the right to ask for it.
Ms. Harper waited while he collected himself.
When he was ready, she explained that the investigation would continue. The recording had identified a document that might be relevant to Aaliyah's future care, and professionals were working to locate the original.
Daniel nodded.
“Do you know what the document is?””
“We have reason to believe it may relate to Renee's wishes regarding Aaliyah's upbringing. Its status and legal effect would need to be established.””
He looked at the photograph beside him.
Renee and Monique had stood shoulder to shoulder, smiling at the camera.
What had been happening behind that smile?
Had Renee simply worried about losing control of her household?
Had the two women argued about parenting?
Or had Renee discovered something that made her fear for her daughter?
He could not know yet.
He left the meeting with a copy of the transcript he was authorized to retain.
Outside, Denise was waiting in her car.
She lowered the window when she saw him.
“Well?””
Daniel got in and shut the door.
“Renee made a recording for Aaliyah. She told her she was allowed to remember her mother and ask questions.””
Denise's eyes filled.
“That sounds like Renee.””
“She also mentioned a document about Aaliyah's future care.””
Denise turned toward him.
“What kind of document?””
“They're still looking for the original.””
She gripped the steering wheel.
“Daniel, do you remember Renee talking about changing anything in the house?””
He shook his head.
“No. I was working constantly. She handled most of the paperwork.””
Denise looked away.
“Renee asked me once whether I would ever take Aaliyah if something happened to her.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“What?””
“She asked if I would be willing to help raise her. I told her of course I would.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she asked me not to bring it up until she was ready to talk to you. She said she didn't want to create a fight over something that might never happen.””
Daniel stared through the windshield.
His wife had been preparing for a possibility he hadn't even considered.
“Did she say why she wanted you involved?””
“She said she wanted Aaliyah to have someone who would let her talk about her mother without feeling guilty.””
Daniel lowered his head.
That was exactly what Aaliyah had needed.
And exactly what he had failed to provide.
When he returned to Denise's house, Aaliyah was sitting at the kitchen table coloring a picture of a butterfly.
She looked up.
“Did you hear Mommy?””
Daniel pulled out a chair beside her.
“I read some of the words she left for you.””
“Did she say my name?””
He smiled through his tears.
“She said your name.””
“What else?””
“She said you were the best thing that ever happened to her.””
Aaliyah stopped coloring.
“Really?””
“Really.””
The little girl looked at the butterfly.
“Did she say I was a good girl?””
Daniel felt his heart break.
“She said you were loved. She didn't need you to be perfect.””
Aaliyah looked at him for a long moment.
Then she asked, “Did she say anything about Monique?””
Daniel considered his answer.
“There were things she was worried about. The adults are still checking what happened, and I won't pretend to know things we haven't proved.””
Aaliyah nodded slowly.
“Will you tell me when you know?””
“Yes. In a way that's right for you, and with people who can help us.””
She returned to her drawing.
After a few seconds, she said, “I used to think Mommy left because I was bad.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“Why would you think that?””
“Because when I asked Monique why Mommy didn't come home, she said I needed to stop asking questions that made people sad.””
He reached for her hand.
“Your mother's death was not your fault.””
Aaliyah's eyes filled with tears.
“Even if I was loud that day?””
“Even then.””
“Even if I didn't listen?””
“Even then.””
She stared at him, searching his face for a contradiction.
Daniel held her hand and let the silence stretch until she seemed ready to believe him.
That evening, they made pancakes again.
This time, Aaliyah helped pour the batter.
She shaped one pancake into a lopsided heart and placed it on Daniel's plate.
“That's for you,” she said.
He smiled.
“Thank you, baby.””
“It's not perfect.””
“Neither am I.””
She giggled.
“That's okay. I still love you.””
Daniel turned away for a moment, pretending to look for the syrup.
He needed the pause.
Later, after Aaliyah had gone to bed, Denise sat beside him on the porch.
“She's beginning to trust you again,” she said.
Daniel looked toward the bedroom window.
“I don't want to waste that.””
“Then keep showing up. Don't make promises you can't keep. And don't let the search for answers become another burden you put on her.””
He nodded.
His phone rang at 9:38 p.m.
Ms. Harper's name appeared on the screen.
“Mr. Carter, we have an update regarding the document mentioned in Renee's recording.””
Daniel stood.
“What did you find?””
“We located a reference to it in the materials recovered from the room. We're now checking the relevant records to establish whether the original document exists and where it may have been stored.””
“Does it name Denise?””
“I can't confirm that yet.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Please let me know as soon as you can.””
“We will.””
The call ended.
Denise stood beside him.
“What happened?””
“They found a reference to the document.””
She waited.
Daniel looked at her.
“Renee may have made arrangements for you to help raise Aaliyah if she couldn't.””
Denise covered her mouth.
Neither of them spoke for several seconds.
Then Daniel's phone buzzed again.
This time, it was a message from Monique.
I heard you listened to Renee's recording.
Daniel stared at the screen.
A second message followed.
You still don't understand what she was trying to do.
Then a third.
If you let Denise take Aaliyah away from me, you'll regret it.
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
He hadn't told Monique what the recording contained.
He hadn't told her what Renee had written.
Yet she seemed to know that Denise's name was connected to the investigation.
He forwarded the messages through the agreed channel.
Then he placed the phone on the table.
For the first time, he was no longer willing to respond to Monique's threats with silence.
May you like
He was willing to wait for the facts.
And the facts, he suspected, were about to reveal why Renee had been so determined to leave her daughter something no one could take away.
