Chapter 4: The Necklace She Said I Stole

My father entered the school counselor’s office with his phone clenched in one hand and a look on his face I had never seen before.

He looked scared.

Not angry at me. Not disappointed.

Scared.

“Aaliyah,” he said, crossing the room, “come here, sweetheart.””

I stood so quickly that my chair scraped against the floor. I ran into his arms, pressing my face against his navy suit.

“Daddy, I didn't take anything.””

His arms tightened around me.

“I know you’re frightened, baby. I’m here.””

“But I didn't take it.””

“I hear you.””

He lowered himself until we were eye to eye. His short fade was slightly disheveled, and his tie hung crookedly beneath his collar.

“Listen to me carefully,” he said.

“You can tell me the truth about anything. You don't have to be afraid of me.””

I nodded, but my stomach twisted.

Because Monique had taught me that adults could say kind things when they wanted information.

And because I knew exactly what she was going to accuse me of stealing.

Mrs. Hill stood beside her desk, holding a notepad.

“Mr. Carter, your wife told the school that a valuable family necklace disappeared from your home last night. She claims Aaliyah took it before leaving with you.””

Dad's expression hardened.

“What necklace?””

“She described a gold pendant with a small diamond.””

My heart pounded.

I had seen that necklace before.

Monique kept it inside a velvet box on her bedroom dresser. She sometimes wore it to dinner parties, and she never let me touch it.

But two weeks earlier, I had found something beneath my bed.

Something wrapped in a white tissue.

Something I had hidden because I was frightened.

Dad turned toward me.

“Sweetheart, do you know anything about this necklace?””

I looked at Mrs. Hill, then at Ms. Brooks.

Finally, I looked at my father.

“Yes.””

His eyebrows drew together.

“Tell me what happened.””

My fingers curled into the fabric of my shirt.

“I found something under my bed.””

Dad went completely still.

“When?””

“A few days ago.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

My eyes filled with tears.

“Because Monique said I would get in trouble if I touched her things.””

He inhaled slowly.

“What did you do with it?””

“I put it in my backpack.””

Mrs. Hill exchanged a brief glance with Ms. Brooks.

Dad kept his voice gentle.

“Do you still have it?””

I nodded.

“It's in the little pocket.””

He looked at my backpack, which sat beside the counselor's chair.

“May I look inside with you?””

I hesitated, then nodded again.

Together, we opened the backpack.

There were two pencils, a half-finished spelling worksheet, a folded drawing of our family, and a small package of crackers.

Dad noticed the crackers.

He didn't comment.

Instead, he unzipped the front pocket.

A white tissue lay inside.

He carefully unfolded it.

The gold necklace slid into his palm.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The pendant caught the afternoon sunlight coming through the window.

Mrs. Hill leaned forward.

“Is that the necklace your wife described?””

Dad nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My throat tightened.

“I didn't steal it, Daddy. I promise.””

He looked at me immediately.

“I believe you.””

“But I didn't know what to do with it.””

“You don't have to explain everything right now.””

He folded the tissue around the necklace and placed it on the desk.

Then he asked Mrs. Hill to document where it had been found.

She wrote down the details while Ms. Brooks remained beside me.

Dad's phone buzzed.

Monique.

He answered on speaker.

“What is it, Andre?”” she demanded before he could speak.

“Have you found the necklace?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“It was in Aaliyah's backpack.””

A sharp, triumphant breath came through the phone.

“I knew it! I told you she was becoming dishonest. This is what happens when you let children get away with everything.””

I flinched.

Dad noticed and lowered his voice.

“Monique, the necklace was wrapped in a tissue inside the backpack. Aaliyah says she found it under her bed.””

“Of course she would say that.””

“Did you put it there?””

Silence.

Then Monique laughed bitterly.

“Are you seriously accusing me of planting my own jewelry in a child's backpack?””

“I'm asking you a question.””

“And I'm telling you that your daughter has been acting strangely for months. She takes things, hides food, lies about what happens in the house, and now you're treating her like some innocent victim.””

My father stood.

“Enough.””

“Don't you dare raise your voice at me!””

“I'm not raising my voice. I'm telling you that you will not call my daughter a thief without evidence.””

“She had the necklace!””

“And she told us where she found it.””

“That proves nothing!””

“It proves she didn't try to hide where it was.””

Monique's breathing grew louder.

“Fine. Believe her. But when you discover what she's really like, don't come crying to me.””

Dad ended the call.

His hand trembled slightly as he lowered the phone.

I had never seen that before.

“Daddy?””

He turned toward me.

“Yes, baby?””

“Are you going to send me away?””

The question seemed to hit him harder than anything Monique had said.

He knelt in front of me and held both my hands.

“No.””

“But she said—”

“Your stepmother does not get to decide whether you belong in this family.””

I stared at him.

“Even if I do something bad?””

His eyes glistened.

“Even then, sweetheart. If you make a mistake, we talk about it. We help you make it right. We don't make you afraid that you'll lose your home.””

I began to cry.

This time, I didn't try to hide it.

Dad pulled me into his arms while Ms. Brooks quietly turned toward the window.

For a few moments, I let myself believe that everything might finally be okay.

Then Mrs. Hill's office phone rang again.

She answered and listened.

Her face changed.

“Mr. Carter,” she said, “there's another issue.””

Dad looked up.

“What now?””

“The school received an email from your wife this morning. She says Aaliyah has been stealing money from her purse for several weeks.””

My father slowly released me.

“What?””

Mrs. Hill turned her computer screen toward him.

“She attached a statement listing several missing amounts. She also wrote that she wants Aaliyah removed from your care until the matter is investigated.””

The room seemed to tilt.

I grabbed my father's sleeve.

“Daddy, I didn't take her money.””

He wrapped his arm around me.

“I know.””

But his eyes were fixed on the screen.

And as he read Monique's final sentence, the color drained from his face.

If Andre refuses to discipline this child, I will have no choice but to reveal what she has been doing in secret.

My father stared at those words.

Then he turned to me.

“Aaliyah,” he asked quietly, “is there anything else Monique has accused you of that you haven't told me?””

May you like

I opened my mouth.

And for the first time, I wondered whether the truth I was about to tell him would destroy the family I had spent my whole life trying to keep together.
