Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

For several seconds, I couldn't hear the ballroom.

The guests were still talking. Somewhere near the entrance, a child laughed. A server moved a stack of clean plates behind the partition.

Yet all I could see was the signature on my phone.

My name had been written in the same elegant script I used on business documents, complete with the distinctive loop at the end of Bennett.

It was convincing.

Almost.

I had spent thirty years reviewing financial statements, commercial leases, and corporate agreements. I had built a career by noticing what other people overlooked.

The signature looked like mine to someone who wanted it to be mine.

But the final stroke was wrong.

I never lifted my pen that way.

I enlarged the image and studied the document heading.

*Supplemental Event Authorization.*

Beneath it was a list of additional services and payment provisions.

The form appeared to authorize the venue to use my account for charges beyond the original approved schedule.

I read it twice.

Then I called Denise.

She answered almost immediately.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

“I'm looking at the supplemental authorization your accounting department sent me.””

“Yes. I was just about to come speak with you.””

“Who submitted it?””

There was a brief pause.

“The document was uploaded through the wedding planning portal this afternoon. The record shows Tiffany Reed's login.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did anyone verify my signature?””

“The document was processed as an electronic authorization. Our accounting team flagged it during the current review because the signature and the submission record require clarification.””

“Has any money been taken from my account because of it?””

“No additional funds have been transferred under that document. The charges remain subject to verification.””

I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

“Please preserve the original submission record and any associated communications.””

“We have done so.””

“Don't alter anything. I want the complete record.””

“Understood.””

I ended the call.

Then I stood beside the family table, holding the phone so tightly that the edge pressed into my palm.

I wanted to believe there was an innocent explanation.

Perhaps Tiffany had uploaded the wrong file. Perhaps someone had misunderstood the paperwork. Perhaps the signature was part of a draft that had never been intended to authorize anything.

But there was another possibility.

One I didn't want to consider.

I looked across the ballroom.

Tiffany was speaking urgently to Daniel near the head table. Her hands moved rapidly as she explained something, and he shook his head.

Then she noticed me watching.

Her expression changed.

She stopped talking.

I walked toward them.

“Denise has sent me a document,” I said.

Tiffany's face became carefully blank.

“What document?””

“A supplemental authorization bearing my signature.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What's that?””

I held up my phone.

“Apparently, someone submitted a form permitting additional charges against my account.””

Tiffany's chin lifted.

“Oh. That.””

The ease of her response frightened me more than an angry denial would have.

“What does 'that' mean?””

She glanced at Daniel.

“It's just paperwork.””

“Paperwork I didn't sign.””

“You signed so many things for this wedding. It's possible you forgot.””

I stared at her.

“I remember what I sign.””

“Then perhaps someone copied the signature from another document.””

“Who?””

She shrugged.

“How would I know?””

Daniel took the phone from me and examined the screen.

“Is this real?””

I answered carefully.

“The venue is verifying it. No additional money has been transferred under the document.””

He looked at Tiffany.

“Did you upload this?””

She folded her arms.

“I uploaded the documents the coordinator asked me to upload.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

Her eyes flashed.

“Why are you interrogating me in front of your mother?””

“Because there's a signature on this form that looks like hers.””

“You think I forged your mother's signature?””

“I didn't say that.””

“But you thought it.””

Daniel lowered the phone.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Tiffany's mouth tightened.

“I was trying to make sure the wedding went smoothly. There were extra charges. The coordinator said the account needed to be updated. I handled it.””

“Why didn't you ask Mom?””

“Because she was already being difficult about everything!””

I watched her closely.

“Which additional charges were you trying to authorize?””

“The usual things. Flowers. Service extensions. A few upgrades.””

“Those were not included in my approved budget.””

“They were necessary.””

“Necessary for whom?””

“For my wedding!””

She said it so loudly that a nearby couple stopped speaking.

Daniel looked around in embarrassment.

“Tiffany, lower your voice.””

She turned on him.

“Don't tell me to lower my voice when your mother is standing here trying to make me look like a criminal.””

“I haven't called you anything.””

“Not yet.””

She grabbed her clutch from the table and began searching inside it.

“I have emails proving I was trying to manage the event. I did everything myself because nobody else was willing to help.””

I felt a cold sensation settle in my stomach.

“Did you ask the venue to charge my account for anything beyond our agreement?””

She looked up.

“I thought you wanted the wedding to be perfect.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“I was trying to prevent delays.””

“By signing my name?””

Her lips parted.

Then she looked toward the ballroom entrance.

For the first time, I saw genuine uncertainty in her eyes.

“I didn't forge anything,” she said.

“Then you should have no difficulty explaining the document.””

Daniel handed my phone back.

“Mom, let's not jump to conclusions. We can review everything tomorrow.””

I looked at him.

“Why are you so eager to postpone every difficult conversation until tomorrow?””

“Because this is my wedding day!””

“And I am your mother.””

He flinched.

Tiffany seized the opening.

“Exactly! You're his mother, and you should want him to be happy. Instead, you're threatening his marriage because you can't stand not being in control.””

I stared at her.

“You struck me. You asked me to leave. Then I discovered a document carrying a signature I did not authorize.””

“I told you I didn't forge anything!””

“Then let the records establish what happened.””

Her expression hardened.

“You can't just investigate me because you don't like me.””

“I can ask a business to verify whether I authorized charges against my own account.””

Daniel stepped between us again.

“Enough. Both of you.””

I looked at him with disbelief.

“Both of us?””

He seemed to hear the mistake as soon as the words left his mouth.

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

He had no answer.

I stepped around him and returned to my seat.

My phone rang before I reached it.

The caller identification showed the venue's accounting office.

I answered.

“Mrs. Bennett, this is Caroline from accounts. We have completed an initial review of the supplemental document.””

I sat down.

“What did you find?””

“The authorization was submitted using the wedding portal associated with Ms. Reed. The document included your name and a signature image, but the electronic audit record does not establish that you personally approved it.””

“Can you determine where the signature image originated?””

“We're comparing it with the documents already on file. We cannot make a definitive finding yet.””

“Please send me the audit record and a copy of the original file.””

“We can provide the relevant records through the approved process.””

“Thank you.””

I ended the call.

Across the room, Tiffany was watching me.

She whispered something to Daniel, and he shook his head.

Then he walked toward me alone.

“Mom, I need to ask you something.””

I gestured to the empty chair.

He remained standing.

“Did you know Tiffany was worried about the wedding budget?””

“Yes.””

“Did she tell you she was afraid the event would look cheap?””

“Yes.””

He looked down at his hands.

“She told me she felt like she had to ask permission for everything.””

I considered that.

“Did she tell you I refused to pay for something she'd already been promised?””

“No.””

“Did she tell you I threatened her?””

He hesitated.

“No.””

“Then why are you repeating her explanation as if it answers my questions?””

His shoulders slumped.

“Because I don't know what to believe.””

That answer hurt more than his earlier silence.

I softened my voice.

“Daniel, you don't have to decide everything tonight. But you do have to stop asking me to pretend nothing happened.””

He nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

For a moment, we sat together without speaking.

Then he looked at the signature on my phone again.

“Mom, there's something else.””

I waited.

He swallowed.

“Tiffany asked me this afternoon whether you still had access to the joint savings account Dad left you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What joint savings account?””

“The one you told me about years ago. The account you said was meant for emergencies.””

I stared at him.

“That account is in my name alone. It was never a joint account.””

Daniel's face went pale.

“She told me you had offered to help us with the house deposit from it.””

I slowly put down my phone.

“I did not.””

He took a step backward.

“I thought you knew.””

Before I could answer, his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen, then turned it toward me.

It was a message from Tiffany.

*Don't let your mother scare you. If she brings up the account, tell her the paperwork was already approved.*

Daniel looked up at me.

His voice was barely audible.

“Mom, what paperwork?””

I didn't know.

May you like

But as I read the message again, I understood that the wedding might not be the only thing Tiffany had tried to arrange with money that wasn't hers.

And somewhere in the records of the last few months, there might be another document bearing my name.
