Chapter 5: My Father Walked Into the House
I didn't open the door immediately.
I stood there staring at the man who had supposedly been buried eleven years earlier.
He looked older.
Thinner.
But the details were unmistakable.
The scar.
The crooked smile.
The way he tilted his head slightly when he was waiting for someone to speak.
My father.
Thomas Carter.
He knocked again.
“Daniel, I know you're in there.””
I looked over my shoulder.
Vanessa was standing halfway down the hallway.
“Don't open it,” she repeated.
I turned toward her.
“You've been hiding this man from me for years. Why shouldn't I let him explain himself?””
“Because he doesn't explain. He manipulates.””
The doorbell rang again.
My father called out.
“I came all this way. Surely you can spare five minutes for your own father.””
I unlocked the door.
But I didn't step aside.
“Why are you alive?””
His smile faded.
“That's a complicated question.””
“Try me.””
He looked past me.
“Is Vanessa inside?””
“Why?””
“Because she has something that belongs to me.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
He glanced toward the hallway.
“The documents.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You told me those documents were destroyed.””
My father gave a short laugh.
“You believed me?””
She looked genuinely shaken.
I moved aside just enough for him to enter.
He walked into the hallway as if he had been there yesterday.
His eyes moved over the birthday decorations.
The purple balloons.
The cake on the island.
The scattered presents.
“Quite a party,” he said.
I didn't respond.
He noticed the photographs on the wall.
One showed Emily holding newborn Lily.
Another showed Noah sitting on my shoulders.
He stopped in front of them.
“Beautiful children.””
I stepped closer.
“Don't.””
He looked at me.
“Don't what?””
“Pretend you care about them.””
His expression changed.
“Daniel, I'm still your father.””
“You let me bury you.””
He sighed.
“I had reasons.””
“You let me stand beside an empty coffin and believe you were dead.””
“I was protecting you.””
I laughed.
It came out harsh and unfamiliar.
“From what? Having a living father?””
He placed his walking stick against the wall.
“From the people who wanted what belonged to this family.””
I looked at the documents.
“You mean the money you stole?””
His face hardened.
“I didn't steal anything.””
“Almost two million dollars disappeared from the children's trust.””
“Investments fail.””
“Not when the money is transferred to shell companies.””
He looked toward Vanessa.
“She told you everything?””
“Not yet.””
My father nodded slowly.
“Then perhaps we should discuss what she hasn't told you.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Don't you dare.””
He ignored her.
“Daniel, your wife has been lying to you since the day you met her.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Which lie?””
My father smiled faintly.
“Would you like to know how she met Emily?””
“I already know. They worked at the hospital.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“They didn't meet by accident.””
Vanessa's face drained of color.
My father continued.
“Emily hired her.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Your wife was originally employed to help your first wife manage her medical paperwork. But she wasn't just an assistant.””
He paused.
“She was supposed to report certain financial decisions to me.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
She shook her head.
“He's twisting everything.””
My father gave a quiet chuckle.
“Am I?””
He walked toward the kitchen island and picked up an untouched glass of water.
“Emily had access to accounts that belonged to my family. She discovered that some of the money was being moved without authorization. I needed someone close to her.””
I stared at him.
“You sent Vanessa?””
“I arranged for her to help.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to know what Emily had discovered.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?””
She lowered her eyes.
“I didn't know what he was doing at first.””
My father placed the glass down.
“Don't play innocent now.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You told me the money was being protected.””
“It was.””
“You said Emily had agreed!””
“She had.””
“No, she hadn't!””
Their voices rose.
I stepped between them.
“Enough!””
Both went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you marry me?””
She began crying.
“Daniel, I loved you.””
“That's not an answer.””
“I did.””
“Were you supposed to report on me too?””
She didn't respond.
My father answered for her.
“She was supposed to keep an eye on the children and the estate.””
I felt a wave of anger so strong that my hands began trembling.
“You used my children as part of some financial scheme?””
My father shook his head.
“Don't be dramatic.””
That sentence nearly made me lose control.
“Don't be dramatic?””
I pointed toward the storage room.
“My daughter has been hiding sandwiches because she thinks she's not allowed to eat in her own house. My son has been watching her suffer because he doesn't know how to protect her. And you stand here telling me not to be dramatic?””
My father looked at me with something close to disappointment.
“You always were emotional.””
I stepped closer.
“Get out.””
He didn't move.
“Daniel, listen carefully. The trust has a clause that could cause serious problems for all of us.””
“I don't care.””
“You should.””
He removed a folded document from his coat.
“Emily changed the beneficiary arrangement shortly before she died.””
I took it.
The paper contained a legal notice confirming that the children's trust would remain inaccessible until an independent investigation was completed.
At the bottom was Emily's signature.
And beneath it was a witness signature.
Thomas Carter.
I looked up.
“You signed this?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you tell me Emily never changed the arrangement?””
“Because she changed it again.””
I stared at him.
“Where's the new document?””
He smiled.
“That's what I've come to collect.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You're still looking for it?””
My father turned toward her.
“Be quiet.””
“No. You said the children would be safe.””
“They are safe.””
“You told me nobody would ever find out.””
He stepped closer.
“Vanessa.””
She backed away.
I looked between them.
“What document?””
Neither answered.
Then Noah appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Dad?””
I turned.
“Go downstairs, buddy.””
He held up a small envelope.
“I found this in Lily's birthday present.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Noah walked down three steps.
“I didn't open it. It was inside the box with her bracelet.””
I took the envelope.
It was addressed to Lily.
The handwriting was Emily's.
My father suddenly moved.
“Give me that.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
He reached for the envelope again.
I shoved his hand away.
“Don't touch my son or his things.””
For the first time, my father's expression became openly hostile.
“You have no idea what you're holding.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a small silver key and a handwritten note.
Daniel, if this reaches you, it means Thomas has returned.
My throat tightened.
I read the next sentence.
Do not trust the story he tells you. The money is not what he wants.
I looked at my father.
He had stopped smiling.
The note continued.
The original recording is hidden somewhere the children know, but the key is only useful if both children are together.
I looked toward the staircase.
Noah was watching me.
“Where did you find the envelope?””
“In Lily's present.””
“What present?””
“The little wooden music box from Grandma.””
I remembered it.
My mother had given Lily a small wooden box that afternoon.
It played a gentle melody when opened.
My father stepped forward.
“Daniel, give me the key.””
I closed my fist.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Your wife doesn't know what she's involved in.””
Vanessa laughed through her tears.
“You're the one who put me in this situation.””
My father turned toward her.
“You agreed.””
“I was twenty-six!””
“And you were paid.””
I stared at them.
“Paid for what?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
My father didn't answer.
But his silence was enough.
Then my phone rang.
Mark.
I answered.
“I'm here,” he said.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
“What?””
“I checked the original estate file. There's a witness statement from the week Emily died.””
My father suddenly looked toward the phone.
Mark continued.
“The statement says someone entered Emily's hospital room after midnight and removed a document from her bedside cabinet.””
I looked at my father.
“Who?””
Mark hesitated.
Then he said:
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
My father slowly removed his coat.
“Daniel, don't believe everything your lawyer tells you.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“What did you take from Emily's hospital room?””
May you like
He looked at me.
And for the first time since walking through my front door, he didn't have an answer ready.
