Chapter 4: The Owner's Daughter

For several seconds, nobody in the lobby moved.

Victoria Hale stood beside the velvet armchair with her handbag clutched against her waist. The confident smile she had worn all afternoon had vanished. Across from her, David Brooks waited patiently, his silver-templed head slightly tilted as though he genuinely expected an answer.

Marcus Reed looked as if someone had pulled the floor out from beneath him.

“Mr. Brooks,” he finally managed, “I wasn't aware that Ms. Brooks was your daughter.””

David glanced at him.

“Would that have changed the way you treated her?””

Marcus opened his mouth, then closed it.

David nodded slowly.

“That is precisely the problem.””

Danielle stood beside the console, holding Grace against her chest. She had imagined a dozen versions of her father's arrival during the past twenty minutes. In some, she had cried into his shoulder. In others, she had explained everything while he demanded justice.

She had not imagined this silence.

Her father wasn't shouting.

He wasn't threatening anyone.

He was simply waiting for people to confront what they had done.

Victoria recovered enough to straighten her dress.

“Mr. Brooks, I think there's been a terrible misunderstanding.””

David turned toward her.

“Is that so?””

“Yes. Your daughter was behaving in a manner I found inappropriate, and I reacted emotionally. I regret that the situation escalated.””

Danielle stared at her.

“You slapped me.””

Victoria's eyes flashed.

“I just said I reacted emotionally.””

“You told me I didn't belong here.””

“I was upset.””

“You told me people like me shouldn't be in this hotel.””

Victoria glanced at David, then lowered her voice.

“I apologize if my choice of words offended you.””

Danielle's expression hardened.

“If?””

David lifted one hand, gently stopping his daughter from responding.

“Ms. Hale, let's make this simple. Did you strike Danielle?””

Victoria hesitated.

The lobby seemed to hold its breath.

“Yes,” she admitted.

“But there was a reason.””

“What reason would justify striking someone who was holding a newborn?””

“She was disrespectful!””

David looked toward Danielle.

“Did you touch Ms. Hale?””

“No.””

“Did you threaten her?””

“No. I asked her to stop insulting me.””

David turned back to Victoria.

“Then explain what you mean by disrespectful.””

Victoria's face reddened.

“I don't appreciate being interrogated in public.””

David glanced around the lobby.

“Neither does my daughter. Yet you had no difficulty humiliating her in public.””

A few feet away, Thomas Ellis stood with his phone in hand, documenting the incident and confirming that the relevant security footage was being preserved.

Marcus shifted uneasily.

“Mr. Brooks, perhaps we should move this discussion into my office. I can arrange refreshments, and we can handle the matter discreetly.””

David looked at him.

“Discreetly?””

“I only mean that we should protect the privacy of everyone involved.””

“Were you protecting my daughter's privacy when you told her to leave in front of these witnesses?””

Marcus swallowed.

“No, sir.””

“Were you protecting her dignity when you accepted Ms. Hale's accusation without asking a single question?””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“No, sir.””

“Then why should I trust you to handle this discreetly now?””

Marcus had no answer.

Danielle watched her father carefully.

She knew his reputation. She knew that he had built Brooks Hospitality Group from a single modest property into a national company with hotels, restaurants, and commercial developments across the country.

But she also knew the man who had sat beside her hospital bed after Grace was born, holding his granddaughter with tears in his eyes.

He had never taught Danielle that money made a person superior.

He had taught her that responsibility increased with power.

Now she understood why he had asked her to stay in the lobby.

He wanted the people responsible to face the truth without an escape route.

Victoria adjusted the strap of her handbag.

“Mr. Brooks, I have been a loyal customer of this hotel for years. I've hosted business dinners here.

I've referred clients. I've spent a substantial amount of money with your company.””

David nodded politely.

“I appreciate your business.””

“Then I'm sure we can resolve this without turning it into something unnecessarily damaging.””

“What would you consider an appropriate resolution?””

Victoria seized the opportunity.

“I think your daughter and I should exchange apologies. She can acknowledge that her attitude contributed to the disagreement, and I'll apologize for losing my temper.””

Danielle's eyebrows rose.

“You want me to apologize for being slapped?””

“I want you to acknowledge that you weren't entirely innocent.””

“Tell me what I did.””

Victoria stared at her.

“You were argumentative.””

“Because I told you not to hit me?””

“Because you refused to leave the situation alone.””

Danielle let out a slow breath.

David's expression remained calm, but his eyes had hardened.

“You are asking my daughter to accept responsibility for your decision to strike her.””

“I'm asking for fairness.””

“No,” David replied.

“You're asking for a convenient version of events.””

Victoria's cheeks burned.

“That's a very unfair accusation.””

“Then let's examine the facts.””

David turned toward Thomas.

“Has security confirmed whether the cameras captured the incident?””

Thomas checked his phone.

“The footage from the seating alcove and reception area has been secured. We have not altered or edited it. The original recordings are being preserved for review.””

“Good. Please make sure the hotel's incident report includes the names of witnesses and the time of the confrontation.””

“Already underway, sir.””

Victoria's head snapped toward Thomas.

“You're actually creating an official report over one slap?””

Thomas looked at her.

“I'm documenting a physical confrontation involving a guest and a staff response.””

“I am not a criminal!””

“Nobody has called you one, ma'am.””

“Then stop treating me like one!””

David stepped forward just enough to bring the conversation back to him.

“Ms. Hale, nobody here is preventing you from leaving. Nobody is threatening you. But you do not get to decide that your actions should go undocumented simply because you dislike the consequences.””

Victoria's fingers tightened around her handbag.

She looked toward Marcus, expecting him to support her.

Instead, he stood with his shoulders stiff and his eyes fixed on the marble floor.

That only made her angrier.

“Marcus, tell him how this woman behaved when you arrived.””

Marcus hesitated.

“I was told there had been a disturbance.””

“Exactly!””

“But I did not witness the beginning of it.””

Victoria's face changed.

“You told me you understood.””

“I was trying to calm the situation.””

“You said you would handle it!””

David looked directly at Marcus.

“Did you witness my daughter strike Ms. Hale?””

“No, sir.””

“Did you witness Ms. Hale strike my daughter?””

Marcus swallowed.

“No, sir. I arrived afterward.””

“Then what evidence did you have to conclude that Danielle was the person causing trouble?””

Marcus's jaw moved, but no answer came.

Victoria broke in.

“I told him what happened!””

David turned toward her.

“And you expected him to accept your account without question?””

“I am a respected businesswoman.””

“So you have mentioned.””

“I have never been treated this way in my life.””

David's voice remained low.

“My daughter has been standing here with a newborn while you insulted her, struck her, and demanded that she leave. Yet you seem most troubled by the fact that someone is asking you to explain yourself.””

Victoria looked around.

The people who had previously avoided her gaze were now watching openly.

She pointed at them.

“Are you all enjoying this? Is that why you're standing here?””

Nobody answered.

A young receptionist behind the desk slowly lowered her eyes to the computer screen, but Danielle noticed that her hands were shaking.

David noticed, too.

He turned toward her.

“Miss, would you please tell us what you witnessed?””

The receptionist looked up in alarm.

Marcus immediately interrupted.

“Mr. Brooks, perhaps staff members should provide statements through the proper internal process.””

David looked at him.

“They can do both.””

The receptionist took a nervous breath.

“My name is Tasha, sir. I was at the desk when Mrs. Hale began shouting.””

Victoria snapped around.

“Don't call me that as if we're strangers!””

Tasha flinched.

David's expression sharpened.

“Ms. Hale, please allow her to speak.””

Tasha clasped her hands together.

“I didn't see the very first moment clearly because I was assisting a guest. But I heard Ms. Brooks say she hadn't touched her.

Then I saw Mrs. Hale strike her.””

Victoria's mouth fell open.

“You're lying!””

Tasha recoiled.

“I'm not.””

“You'd better be careful about what you say.””

David's voice cut through the lobby.

“That is enough.””

Victoria fell silent.

David turned to Tasha.

“Thank you for telling us what you witnessed. Nobody should pressure you to change your account. Please provide your statement through the appropriate process.””

Tasha nodded, visibly relieved.

Danielle felt a strange warmth spread through her chest.

It wasn't satisfaction at watching Victoria lose control.

It was relief at finally seeing someone listen.

Her father turned back toward Marcus.

“Until we complete a fair review of this incident, I want you removed from direct responsibility for handling this complaint. You will cooperate with the investigation, and you will have an opportunity to provide your own account.””

Marcus went pale.

“Sir, are you suspending me?””

“I'm removing you from this particular matter while we establish what happened. Any further employment decision will depend on the findings.””

Marcus nodded stiffly.

“Yes, sir.””

Victoria stared at David.

“You cannot seriously be allowing your daughter to destroy someone's career over a personal disagreement.””

David looked at her for a long moment.

“Your career is not my daughter's responsibility, Ms. Hale. Your actions are your own.””

Victoria's face twisted with anger.

She looked at Danielle, and the hatred in her eyes was no longer hidden behind polite language.

“You must be very proud of yourself.””

Danielle adjusted Grace's blanket.

“No,” she replied quietly.

“I'm proud that I didn't become like you.””

Victoria went still.

For the first time, she seemed unable to find an immediate insult.

Then David's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed—not dramatically, but enough for Danielle to notice.

“What is it?”” she asked.

David turned the phone toward Thomas.

A message had arrived from the company's regional operations director.

*Urgent: We received a call from the Hale account this morning. Caller requested that all complaints involving Ms. Victoria Hale be handled directly through senior management. Please confirm whether this was authorized.*

David read it again.

Then he looked at Victoria.

“Ms. Hale, why did you contact our regional office this morning?””

Victoria's face drained of color.

For the first time, she wasn't simply worried about what she had done in the lobby.

She was worried about what the hotel already knew.

May you like

And when David asked the next question, Marcus slowly lifted his head.

“Who told you that you could control how this hotel handles complaints?””
