Chapter 3: The Name on the Contract

Vanessa stepped away from the glass door.
For several seconds, the restaurant seemed to tilt around her.
Daniel Cole was a commercial property consultant. He spent his days arranging leases, negotiating developments, and boasting about the wealthy clients who trusted him with their investments.
He had never mentioned working with Marcus Bennett.
He had never mentioned Bennett Hospitality Group.
And he had certainly never told her that a business deal involving his name could become the subject of an investor meeting.
Vanessa returned to the dining room, moving too quickly to notice the host greeting a new couple.
Tiffany stood when she saw her.
“What happened?””
Vanessa pulled out her chair but didn't sit.
“Daniel's name is in there.””
“What?””
“Marcus is discussing an acquisition. One of the investors mentioned Daniel.””
Tiffany's expression changed.
“Your Daniel?””
“How many Daniels do you think I know?””
“Why would your husband be involved with Marcus's company?””
“I don't know.””
For the first time that afternoon, Vanessa sounded genuinely frightened.
She opened her phone and called Daniel.
He answered on the fourth ring.
“Hey, babe. I'm in the middle of something.””
“Where are you?””
“At the office. Why?””
“Are you working with Bennett Hospitality Group?””
Silence.
It lasted barely two seconds, but Vanessa noticed.
“Why are you asking me that?”” Daniel said.
“Because I'm sitting in their restaurant, and Marcus Bennett is in a meeting discussing an acquisition connected to you.””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Vanessa, listen to me. Don't get involved in anything you don't understand.””
Her stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I'll explain when I get home.””
“No. Explain now.””
“I'm busy.””
“Daniel—”
He ended the call.
Vanessa stared at her screen.
Tiffany slowly sat back down.
“That didn't sound good.””
“No.””
“Maybe you should leave.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I need to know what's happening.””
Across the room, the glass office door opened.
Marcus emerged with Elena and the investors. He was no longer wearing his apron. His shirt was immaculate, his posture relaxed, and a dark jacket rested over his arm.
The older investor shook his hand.
“Good work today, Marcus. We'll have our legal team send the revised documents by Monday.””
“Thank you, Richard,” Marcus replied.
“Please make sure the revised terms include the employee-retention protections we discussed.””
“Already in the notes.””
The investors departed through the private entrance.
Elena remained beside Marcus.
“Would you like me to pull the original property agreement?”” she asked.
“Yes. And contact our counsel. I want every version of the proposal, including the correspondence with Daniel Cole.””
“I'll get it.””
Marcus nodded.
Then he noticed Vanessa standing near the dining area.
She approached him before she could lose her nerve.
“Marcus, we need to talk.””
He looked at her for a moment.
“About what?””
“Daniel.””
His expression remained neutral.
“Your husband?””
“Yes. I overheard the meeting.””
Marcus glanced briefly at Elena.
She understood and stepped away to give them privacy.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Why is my husband's name connected to your acquisition?””
“That's a business matter.””
“I'm his wife.””
“And I'm the owner of this company.””
The distinction was quiet but unmistakable.
Vanessa flinched.
“I know that.””
“Do you?””
She looked down.
The question hurt because it was deserved.
“I made a mistake earlier,” she said.
“I didn't know who you were.””
Marcus's gaze did not change.
“You didn't need to know who I was.””
“I didn't mean—”
“You thought I was a waiter. You decided that meant you could speak to me however you wanted.””
Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.
A couple walked past carrying shopping bags. Somewhere behind them, a coffee cup struck a saucer.
Marcus continued, his voice even.
“The people who serve food here are professionals. They work hard. They deserve respect whether they own a company, rent an apartment, or are still figuring out what they want to do with their lives.””
“I understand that now.””
“Do you?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Yes.””
He waited.
She forced herself to meet his eyes.
“I'm sorry for what I said.””
Marcus gave a slight nod.
“Thank you for saying that.””
Relief crossed her face, but it disappeared when he added, “That doesn't mean I can discuss confidential business information with you.””
“I'm not asking you to give me anything confidential. I just want to understand why Daniel's name came up.””
“Then you should ask Daniel.””
“I did. He hung up on me.””
For the first time, Marcus looked concerned.
Not for himself.
For her.
“Vanessa, I suggest you speak with him before you assume anything. I can't tell you what his involvement means without reviewing the documents.””
She nodded slowly.
“Will you at least tell me whether he's in trouble?””
“I don't know yet.””
The answer was honest, and that made it more frightening.
Vanessa glanced at the office.
“Is this about money?””
“It's about a proposed transaction. Our lawyers are reviewing the details.””
“Marcus, please. If Daniel has done something wrong, I need to know.””
“I understand.””
He paused.
“But I won't make accusations before I have facts.””
She looked at him as if searching for the cruel satisfaction she expected him to feel.
There was none.
No smirk. No triumphant speech. No attempt to remind her of the past.
That somehow made her feel smaller.
“Back in school,” she said quietly, “I used to think you were going to fail.””
Marcus looked toward the windows.
“I remember.””
“I thought you were unrealistic. You were always talking about opening businesses, helping people, building something. I thought you were wasting your time.””
“And now?””
Vanessa's fingers twisted around the strap of her handbag.
“Now I think I was wrong.””
Marcus looked back at her.
“Being wrong about someone's future isn't the worst mistake a person can make.””
She waited for him to finish.
“Treating them badly because you think you know their worth is worse.””
Vanessa's eyes lowered.
For once, she had no clever response.
Marcus adjusted his jacket.
“I have work to finish. I hope you and Tiffany enjoy the rest of your afternoon.””
He started toward the office.
“Marcus,” Vanessa called.
He turned.
“If Daniel has done something that could hurt your business, I want you to know I had nothing to do with it.””
Marcus studied her face.
“I'll keep that in mind.””
Then he walked away.
Vanessa returned to her table and sat down heavily.
Tiffany moved her untouched glass aside.
“Are you going to tell me what's happening?””
“I don't know yet.””
“Do you think Daniel has been hiding something?””
Vanessa looked at the phone in her hand.
“I think he knows more than he's telling me.””
She called him again.
This time, he answered immediately.
“What did I tell you?”” Daniel demanded.
“Stay out of it.””
Vanessa gripped the phone.
“You don't get to tell me to stay out of something when your name is appearing in meetings with people I've never heard you mention.””
“Lower your voice.””
“I'm in a restaurant.””
“Then leave.””
“Daniel, what is the acquisition?””
Another pause.
Then he said, “It's a property transaction. Nothing more.””
“Why is Marcus's legal team reviewing it?””
“Because he's the buyer.””
“Why did he look concerned when your name came up?””
Daniel exhaled sharply.
“Vanessa, you're making this bigger than it is.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
“I will when I get home.””
She almost believed him.
Then she heard a woman's voice in the background.
“Daniel, the original file is still in your email. Did you send it to the attorney?””
Vanessa went still.
Daniel said something too quietly for her to understand.
Then the woman spoke again.
“Because if Bennett sees the original signature page, the whole deal is finished.””
The call disconnected.
Vanessa stared at her phone, her pulse hammering in her ears.
Tiffany reached across the table.
“What is it?””
Vanessa slowly lifted her eyes.
“Someone just said that if Marcus sees the original signature page, the deal is finished.””
Tiffany's face drained of color.
“Vanessa, what deal?””
Before she could answer, a notification appeared on Vanessa's screen.
It was an email from Daniel.
The subject line contained only five words.
*Don't tell Marcus what you know.*
And attached to it was a scanned contract bearing her husband's signature.
Beneath his signature was another name.
May you like
One Vanessa recognized immediately.
Her own.
