Chapter 7: The Truth Written on the Back

Britney was standing beside the restaurant's host station when Daniel reached the main floor.

Her blue dress looked immaculate, her makeup remained perfect, and her handbag rested against her hip as though she had never stormed out of the restaurant earlier that afternoon.

But her fingers were shaking.

In her right hand, she held a single sheet of paper inside a transparent plastic sleeve.

“Mr. Carter,” she said, stepping toward him.

“I'm glad you agreed to see me.””

“I didn't agree to anything. You told my receptionist you had a document I needed to see.””

“It's important.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

Britney glanced toward Angela, who stood several feet away with a tablet in her hands.

“Can we speak privately?””

Daniel studied her face.

“Is there anything on that page that you're unwilling to show my attorney?””

Her eyes widened.

“Why would you bring an attorney into this?””

“Because you've returned with a document connected to an investment proposal that may contain an unauthorized signature.””

Britney's expression hardened.

“You've been talking to Richard.””

“I've been reviewing documents.””

“Then you already know he isn't telling you everything.””

Daniel gestured toward the private conference room.

“We can discuss the document there.””

Britney hesitated before following him.

Angela watched them enter the hallway. She had seen Daniel remain calm during difficult negotiations, angry customers, and tense conversations with employees. But she had never seen him look quite so focused.

Something about Britney's return suggested that the wine incident had been only the beginning.

Inside the conference room, Daniel took a seat at the table.

Britney remained standing.

“Before I show you this,” she said, “I need you to understand that I was trying to protect everyone involved.””

“From what?””

“From a situation that could damage several businesses.””

“Then the document should help clarify that situation.””

She placed the plastic sleeve on the table.

Daniel didn't reach for it.

“Where did you get it?””

Britney pressed her lips together.

“From someone who was involved in preparing the original investment paperwork.””

“Who?””

“I can't give you that name.””

“Then I can't verify the document's origin.””

“Mr. Carter, please. You need to see it first.””

Daniel slid the sleeve toward himself.

The page contained the same authorization clause he had examined in the earlier copies. Anthony Bell's signature appeared at the bottom, beneath a date that fell several months after his death.

At first glance, it looked identical to the signature on the other document.

Then Daniel remembered the anonymous message.

Don't take the page from her until you check the back.

He carefully removed the paper from the sleeve and turned it over.

The back contained a faint impression of handwritten notes, as though someone had written on another sheet while this one lay beneath it.

Daniel tilted the page toward the light.

Several words became visible.

*Hold the $48,000 until Carter confirms the funding.*

Below that, in a different handwriting, was another sentence.

*If Carter refuses, release the revised agreement to Hayes.*

Daniel looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Britney sat down abruptly.

“I didn't write that.””

“I didn't ask whether you wrote it. I asked what it means.””

“I don't know exactly.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

Britney rubbed her palms against the fabric of her dress.

“The person who gave me the page said it was part of an internal working file. I was told it contained notes about the proposed investment.””

“Who gave it to you?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Why not?””

“Because I promised I wouldn't.””

Daniel's voice remained quiet.

“Britney, someone has circulated a document bearing the signature of a deceased man. The document appears to be connected to a proposed investment involving my company. A note on the back refers to money and an agreement that could be released if I refuse funding.””

He paused.

“You're asking me to ignore all of that because you made a promise to someone whose identity you won't disclose?””

Britney looked down.

“No.””

“Then start at the beginning.””

She took a shaky breath.

“About four months ago, a man contacted me about investment opportunities. He said he worked with private capital groups and needed someone who could coordinate meetings.””

“What's his name?””

“Graham Whitmore.””

Daniel wrote it down.

“Did you verify his employment?””

“He showed me business cards and introduced me to people who claimed to know him.””

“That's not verification.””

“I know that now.””

“Did he tell you that he represented Carter Hospitality Group?””

“He said he had connections to your company.””

“Did he show you written authorization?””

“No.””

“Did he tell you he had approval for the Hayes investment?””

Britney nodded reluctantly.

“He said the funding was almost secured.””

“And the forty-eight thousand dollars?””

“He described it as a temporary administrative deposit.””

“Who was supposed to receive it?””

“A company he said handled transaction expenses.””

“Did you receive any money from that company?””

Britney's face changed.

Daniel waited.

“Some,” she admitted.

“How much?””

“Six thousand dollars.””

“For what?””

“Coordination work.””

“Did you know where the money came from?””

“No.””

“Did you ask?””

She didn't answer.

Daniel placed the paper on the table.

“Did Graham tell you that Anthony Bell had authorized the agreement?””

“He said the document was already approved.””

“By a man who had been dead for months?””

Britney's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know he was dead when I first saw the name.””

“When did you find out?””

“Two weeks ago.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What did you do then?””

“I called Graham. He said the signature had been copied from an older document and that the agreement was only a draft.””

“Did you believe him?””

“I wanted to.””

“That isn't an answer.””

Britney looked away.

“No,” she whispered.

“Not completely.””

For the first time, she appeared less concerned about protecting her image than about the consequences of what she had done.

Daniel did not mistake that for innocence.

“Why did you come back today?””

“Because Graham called me after I left this restaurant. He said you had discovered the documents.””

“How did he know?””

“I don't know.””

“What did he tell you to do?””

“He told me to retrieve the page before you could make a copy.””

Daniel glanced at the transparent sleeve.

“Did he tell you what would happen if you refused?””

Britney nodded.

“He said I would be blamed for everything.””

“Did he threaten you?””

“He said he had records of every conversation, every payment, every email I'd sent. He said nobody would believe me if I tried to explain.””

Daniel considered the answer.

“Did you bring this page because you wanted to help us, or because you were afraid Graham would expose you?””

Britney's eyes filled completely.

“Both.””

The admission hung between them.

Daniel called his legal counsel and explained that Britney had brought a document that might be relevant to the disputed investment. Counsel instructed him not to alter the page and arranged for a secure transfer to an independent document examiner.

Britney watched him make the call.

“You're going to report me, aren't you?””

“I'm going to preserve the evidence. What happens after that depends on what the evidence establishes.””

“But I didn't create the signature.””

“That may be important. So will be what you knew, what you did, and when you learned it.””

She covered her face briefly.

“I thought I was helping businesses find money.””

“And when you learned the documents might be false?””

“I was scared.””

“So you threatened my employee, blamed him for an accident, and tried to make me believe I owed you something because of your connections.””

Britney lowered her hands.

“I was embarrassed.””

“You were angry because you thought I had no power to help or hurt you.””

She had no answer.

Daniel stood and moved toward the window.

“I don't know whether you're responsible for the altered documents. But I do know that the way you treated people today had nothing to do with Graham Whitmore.””

Britney looked at him.

“I know.””

“Angela told you what happened. You chose to call her a liar because you didn't like her answer.””

“I know.””

“And when you believed I was a server, you threatened my livelihood. When you learned I owned the restaurant, your story changed.””

Britney's shoulders sagged.

“I'm sorry.””

Daniel turned back.

“Then the next step is to tell the truth, even when it makes you look bad.””

She nodded slowly.

Before the meeting ended, Daniel asked her to provide her correspondence with Graham and a complete record of the payments she had received. His attorney would coordinate the process and explain her options.

Britney agreed.

As she left the conference room, she paused beside the door.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“There's something Graham told me about Richard.””

Daniel waited.

“He said Richard would never sign the agreement willingly. He said Richard had a reason to keep the original documents hidden.””

“What reason?””

Britney looked toward the hallway.

“He said Richard was already in debt to someone connected to the deal.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“Did Graham give you any proof?””

“No. But he told me that if Richard refused to sign, the documents would make it look like he had approved everything from the beginning.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“That's a serious claim.””

“I know.””

“Do you have anything that supports it?””

Britney hesitated.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small memory card.

“Graham gave me this. He said it contained backup files in case anything went wrong.””

Daniel didn't take it.

“What's on it?””

“Emails. Drafts. Some recordings.””

“Have you listened to the recordings?””

“One.””

“What did you hear?””

Britney swallowed.

“Graham talking to someone about the investment.””

“Who was the other person?””

“I couldn't see him. But I recognized his voice.””

Daniel waited.

Britney's voice fell to a whisper.

“It was Richard Hayes.””

Daniel stared at her.

Richard had denied authorizing the transaction. He had claimed he wanted to discover who had used Anthony's signature.

Now Britney was suggesting that he had spoken with Graham about the investment.

It could be evidence of involvement.

It could also be an edited recording, a conversation taken out of context, or another attempt to manipulate Daniel into abandoning the deal.

“Did Graham tell you when the recording was made?””

“No.””

“Did he tell you what the conversation concerned?””

“He said it proved Richard knew about the money.””

Daniel reached for his phone.

“Then we won't make assumptions. We'll have the file examined and establish its origin.””

Britney slid the memory card into a small envelope and wrote her name across the flap.

Daniel called his attorney again.

But before he could explain the new evidence, his phone lit up with an incoming call from Richard.

He answered.

“Richard.””

Richard sounded almost frantic.

“Daniel, please tell me Britney hasn't come back to your restaurant.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“She has.””

“Did she give you anything?””

“Why are you asking?””

Richard's breathing became audible.

“Because she has something that doesn't belong to her.””

“What is it?””

A long silence followed.

Then Richard said five words that changed everything.

“The original recording of Anthony.””

Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.

“What recording?””

Richard's voice cracked.

“The one that proves Anthony was alive when the agreement was prepared.””

Daniel looked at Britney's empty chair.

Anthony Bell had been dead for eight months.

May you like

And if Richard was telling the truth, the recording might explain how a dead man's signature had appeared on a document dated six weeks ago.

But it might also reveal that somebody had been lying about the timing of the entire transaction.
