Chapter 3: The Name Behind the Woman in Pink

My father's expression became unreadable.

I knew that look.

When I was a little girl, it usually meant someone had made a very expensive mistake.

Marcus leaned closer.

“Her husband is Gregory Whitmore. Regional operations director.””

My father stared at the tablet.

“Gregory Whitmore.””

“Yes.””

“Interesting.””

Vanessa approached us, adjusting the strap of her designer handbag.

“Are we done here? I have a dinner reservation.””

My father closed the folder.

“Not quite.””

She laughed.

“You know, Mr. Bennett, I don't care how much money you have. You can't just walk into a hotel and intimidate people.””

My father looked at her.

“I'm not intimidating anyone.””

He paused.

“I'm asking questions.””

Vanessa turned toward Daniel.

“Tell him who my husband is.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Whitmore—”

“Tell him.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Your husband is the regional operations director for the coastal properties.””

Vanessa smiled triumphantly.

“There. Now perhaps we can stop this nonsense.””

My father nodded slowly.

“Marcus, call Gregory.””

Marcus took out his phone.

Vanessa's smile widened.

“Please do. He'll straighten this out.””

Marcus dialed.

The phone rang twice.

Then a man's voice answered.

“Marcus? What's going on?””

“Gregory, Robert Bennett is here at the Seabreeze Grand.””

There was a brief silence.

Then Gregory spoke.

“Mr. Bennett? Is everything all right?””

My father took the phone.

“No, Gregory. It isn't.””

Vanessa moved closer, clearly expecting a friendly reunion.

“Darling, it's me.””

My father continued.

“Your wife just struck my daughter in the face while she was holding my granddaughter. Your general manager then attempted to remove her from a room she had already paid for.””

The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.

Then Gregory said, “I'm sure there's some misunderstanding.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“That's what everyone seems to be saying.””

Gregory lowered his voice.

“Robert, perhaps we can discuss this privately.””

“Why privately?””

“Because these matters can be sensitive.””

“An assault in a hotel lobby is sensitive?””

Vanessa snatched the phone.

“Gregory, don't let him bully you. This woman walked into me, and now her father is making threats.””

I watched my father's jaw tighten.

“Give me the phone,” he said.

Vanessa ignored him.

“Darling, you know how these people behave. They always make everything about discrimination.””

My father reached out.

“Phone. Now.””

She reluctantly handed it over.

My father put the call on speaker.

“Gregory, I want the security footage preserved. I want a written incident report. And I want to know why your wife believes she can use her husband's position to intimidate guests.””

Gregory sighed.

“Robert, she's my wife. I would appreciate it if you didn't turn this into a public spectacle.””

My father glanced around the lobby.

At the guests who were still watching.

At my swollen cheek.

At Amara sleeping against my chest.

“Gregory, your wife made it public when she slapped my daughter in front of fifty people.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Gregory said something that made Marcus look up sharply.

“Look, Robert, you know Vanessa has been under pressure. She has a temper sometimes. I'll speak with her.””

My father shook his head.

“That's not an answer.””

“Let's not make decisions in anger.””

“I'm not angry, Gregory.””

My father ended the call.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You can't do that.””

“Apparently, I just did.””

She laughed nervously.

“You're going to regret embarrassing me.””

My father turned toward Marcus.

“Get the footage.””

Marcus nodded and headed toward the security office.

Daniel hurried after him.

“Marcus, please. I can handle this.””

Marcus didn't stop.

“No, Daniel. You already had your opportunity.””

I watched Daniel disappear down the hallway.

Vanessa turned toward me.

“This is all because you couldn't watch where you were going.””

I felt my fingers tighten around the edge of Amara's blanket.

“Don't speak to me.””

She stepped closer.

“Or what?””

My father moved between us.

“That's close enough.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“She's acting like I tried to kill her.””

My father stared at her.

“No. She's acting like someone who doesn't want to be hit twice.””

A guest near the reception desk began recording.

Vanessa noticed and immediately covered her face.

“Stop filming me!””

The guest lowered the phone.

My father looked at the woman.

“Please keep the recording. It may be important.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“You cannot use people's phones against me!””

“Then you should have thought about that before striking someone in public.””

A few minutes later, Marcus returned carrying a tablet.

“Robert, we have the footage.””

My father accepted it.

“Play it.””

The video showed the lobby from a camera mounted above the reception desk.

There I was, carrying Amara, walking carefully around a luggage cart.

Vanessa stepped sideways.

My diaper bag brushed her elbow.

Then she turned.

The slap was unmistakable.

The sound was even captured by the lobby microphone.

Vanessa's hand struck my face.

My head turned.

My arms tightened around my daughter.

The recording continued.

It showed me trying to explain.

It showed Vanessa pointing at me.

It showed Daniel arriving.

And it showed him directing me toward the exit without asking a single witness what had happened.

My father watched the entire recording without blinking.

When it ended, he handed the tablet back.

“Save three copies.””

Marcus nodded.

“Already done.””

Daniel returned from the hallway.

“Mr. Bennett, I would like to apologize for how this was handled.””

My father looked at him.

“Do you know what bothers me most?””

Daniel shook his head.

“You had a woman standing in front of you with a newborn baby. You saw her crying. You saw the mark on her face. And you decided the easiest solution was to make her disappear.””

Daniel's eyes dropped.

“I was trying to avoid a disturbance.””

“You avoided a disturbance for the person who caused it.””

Vanessa threw up her hands.

“Oh, this is unbelievable.””

My father turned toward Marcus.

“Has Gregory called back?””

“Three times.””

“Good.””

Marcus hesitated.

“There's something else.””

My father looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“The footage from the lobby isn't the only recording we found.””

He turned the tablet around.

A second video appeared.

It showed Vanessa entering the resort earlier that morning.

She approached the reception desk, leaned toward Emily, and pointed toward a list of arriving guests.

Then she said something.

The audio was faint, but clear enough.

“Make sure the woman named Claire Bennett doesn't get the oceanfront suite.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at my father.

“Dad?””

He didn't move.

Marcus continued.

“We checked the reservation history. Claire's booking was flagged for manual review at 8:14 this morning. The instruction came from an internal management account.””

My father stared at the screen.

“Whose account?””

Marcus enlarged the details.

A username appeared.

GWHITMORE.

Vanessa's face turned pale.

My father looked at her.

“You knew my daughter was coming.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then she whispered:

“Gregory told me who she was.””

My father stepped closer.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked toward the glass doors.

And for the first time that afternoon, she looked genuinely frightened.

Because whatever had brought her to my hotel room before I arrived had nothing to do with a damaged dress.

May you like

It had started long before the slap.

And my father was about to discover why Gregory Whitmore had been so desperate to keep me out of that resort.
