Chapter 9: The Daughter Margaret Never Mentioned

The police officers immediately raised their flashlights.

"Don't move!""

Gregory lifted both hands.

"Easy. I'm not carrying anything.""

Raymond stepped forward.

"You locked the door.""

"Only because I wanted privacy.""

"You brought us here with a recording.""

"I wanted you to hear something.""

Jada moved closer to her father.

"Why are you doing this?""

Gregory looked at her.

For a moment, his expression softened.

"You look remarkably like your mother.""

Jada's face tightened.

"Don't talk about her.""

Gregory smiled faintly.

"She was a remarkable woman.""

"Then why did you betray her?""

His smile disappeared.

"Because I made a mistake.""

Raymond laughed bitterly.

"Eight hundred thousand dollars is a large mistake.""

Gregory looked toward him.

"You still think this is about money.""

"Isn't it?""

"No.""

He stepped closer to the table.

"It's about a promise.""

One of the officers moved toward him.

"Stay where you are.""

Gregory nodded.

"Of course.""

He looked at Raymond again.

"Twenty-eight years ago, Margaret came to me with a request. She wanted me to help protect someone.""

"Who?""

Gregory glanced toward Jada.

"Not who you think.""

Raymond's jaw tightened.

"Stop speaking in riddles.""

Gregory reached into his jacket.

The officers immediately raised their weapons.

"Slowly!""

He removed a folded photograph.

Then placed it on the table.

It showed Margaret holding a newborn baby.

Raymond stared.

His wife had never shown him that photograph.

Jada stepped forward.

"Who's the baby?""

Gregory didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Raymond.

"Did Margaret ever tell you about the pregnancy she had before you met her?""

Raymond frowned.

"No.""

Gregory nodded.

"I didn't think so.""

He pushed the photograph toward them.

"Margaret had a daughter before she married you.""

Jada's face went pale.

"What?""

Raymond shook his head.

"No.""

Gregory continued.

"She was seventeen. The child's father disappeared before the baby was born. Margaret's parents arranged for the child to be raised by another family.""

Raymond stared at the photograph.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"Because she believed the child would have a better life if she stayed away.""

Jada's voice trembled.

"Does she have a name?""

Gregory looked at her.

"Her name was Lily.""

Raymond felt the room tilt.

Margaret had never mentioned a Lily.

Not once.

He had known his wife for more than twenty years.

He had believed he knew everything about her.

And now a stranger was telling him that she had another daughter.

"Where is she?"" Jada asked.

Gregory hesitated.

"Alive.""

"Where?""

"That's complicated.""

Jada stepped forward.

"She's my sister.""

Gregory looked at her.

"Yes.""

Raymond stared at him.

"How does the money connect to this?""

Gregory took a slow breath.

"Margaret's parents established a private account for Lily when she was born. They wanted to ensure she would never be financially dependent on the family that had adopted her.""

Raymond shook his head.

"I never knew about it.""

"Margaret didn't want you to know.""

"Why?""

"Because she was afraid you would feel responsible for a child you had never met.""

Raymond's eyes hardened.

"That's not something you get to decide for me.""

Gregory nodded.

"Perhaps.""

He reached into his briefcase and removed another document.

"This is the original account agreement.""

Jada picked it up.

The name appeared clearly.

*LILY MARIE BENNETT.*

Below it was a balance.

Eight hundred thousand dollars.

Raymond stared.

"That was the money Margaret transferred.""

Gregory nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why did you say it was stolen?""

"Because the account was supposed to be transferred into a protected trust. Instead, I moved it through the investment group.""

Jada looked at him.

"Why?""

Gregory's expression changed.

"Because the account was about to be seized.""

Raymond frowned.

"By whom?""

Gregory glanced toward the officers.

Then back at Raymond.

"By the people who wanted control of the university properties.""

Jada shook her head.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Gregory pointed toward the photograph.

"Margaret discovered that the investment group was using Lily's account as collateral without her permission. She demanded that I move the money somewhere safe.""

Raymond stared at the documents.

"Then you stole it.""

"I protected it.""

"You made yourself the owner.""

"Temporarily.""

"There's no such thing as temporarily stealing someone's money.""

Gregory looked down.

"I know.""

The warehouse fell silent.

Then Jada asked the question neither man had considered.

"Where is Lily now?""

Gregory hesitated.

"She's in this city.""

Jada's heart began pounding.

"She's here?""

"Yes.""

"How old is she?""

"Thirty-four.""

Jada covered her mouth.

An older sister.

Somewhere nearby.

A woman who had lived an entire life without knowing that Margaret Byrne had been her mother.

Raymond looked at Gregory.

"Does she know?""

Gregory shook his head.

"No.""

"Does she know Margaret was her mother?""

"No.""

"Then why have you been hiding this?""

Gregory lowered his eyes.

"Because the people who wanted the university properties were using her identity to gain access to the trust.""

Raymond stepped closer.

"Who?""

Gregory didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward Jada.

"Your mother left something for Lily. Something that would make her the legal beneficiary of the eight hundred thousand dollars and part of the trust's investment income.""

Jada frowned.

"But Mom's letter said I would become the controlling trustee.""

"You would.""

"Then what does Lily get?""

Gregory looked at her.

"Her inheritance.""

Raymond shook his head.

"Margaret would never have divided the trust without telling me.""

Gregory gave a sad smile.

"She didn't divide the trust. She created a separate provision for Lily.""

Jada looked at the account agreement.

"Then why does Lily's name appear in the original records?""

Gregory pointed to a paragraph.

"Because she was the original beneficiary of the family account.""

Raymond took the document.

He read the clause.

Then looked up.

"This is not an ownership transfer.""

"No.""

"It's a beneficiary designation.""

"Yes.""

Raymond's voice became colder.

"Then why did you let me believe the money was connected to a property loan?""

Gregory swallowed.

"Because I was trying to keep Lily's existence hidden.""

"From whom?""

"From the investment group.""

Jada shook her head.

"You could have told us.""

Gregory looked at her.

"I couldn't.""

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa was working with them.""

Raymond's expression changed.

"Vanessa knew about Lily?""

Gregory nodded.

"She found out four years ago. She was the one who discovered the old account records.""

Jada stared.

"Then she knew Mom had another daughter.""

"Yes.""

"Did she try to find her?""

"She did more than that.""

Gregory removed a final sheet from his briefcase.

It was a printed email.

The date was four years earlier.

The sender was Vanessa Cole.

The recipient was Gregory Shaw.

Raymond read the first line.

I found her. I know where Lily lives.

His hands tightened.

The message continued.

If you want this to stay quiet, you need to give me access to the trust accounts.

Jada looked up.

"She blackmailed you?""

Gregory nodded.

"She wanted money and control.""

"Why did you agree?""

"Because I believed I could manage her.""

Raymond laughed.

"You couldn't even manage yourself.""

Gregory accepted the insult without responding.

Jada looked at the email again.

"Does Lily know Vanessa?""

Gregory shook his head.

"Not personally.""

"Then why would Vanessa threaten her?""

"Because she knew that if Lily came forward, the original account records would become part of the trust investigation.""

Raymond looked at the officers.

"Is this enough to arrest him?""

One officer stepped forward.

"Mr. Shaw, we need you to accompany us while we verify these documents and the circumstances surrounding the financial transfers.""

Gregory nodded.

"Of course.""

But before the officers could take him, he looked at Raymond.

"There's something else.""

Raymond's expression hardened.

"What now?""

Gregory glanced at Jada.

"Your sister has been receiving anonymous payments for years.""

Jada frowned.

"From whom?""

"Vanessa.""

Raymond felt his stomach tighten.

"Why?""

"To keep her away from the family.""

Jada stepped forward.

"How much?""

Gregory shook his head.

"I don't know the exact total.""

"Where does she live?""

Gregory hesitated.

Then he gave them an address.

Jada immediately took out her phone.

"Let's go.""

Raymond caught her arm.

"Wait.""

"She's my sister, Dad.""

"I know.""

"Then we need to find her.""

Raymond looked at Gregory.

"Is there anything else you haven't told us?""

Gregory's eyes dropped.

Then he spoke.

"One thing.""

He looked toward the officers.

"Vanessa didn't discover Lily through the old account records. Someone gave her the information.""

"Who?""

Gregory's face became almost expressionless.

"Margaret's former doctor.""

Raymond froze.

"What?""

"The doctor who treated your wife during her final week.""

Jada shook her head.

"Why would he know about Lily?""

Gregory looked at her.

"Because he was the person who signed the original birth records.""

Raymond stared.

The officer touched Gregory's shoulder.

"Let's go.""

Gregory walked toward the exit.

But before disappearing into the darkness, he turned.

"Raymond, I know you hate me. You have every reason to.""

Raymond said nothing.

Gregory continued.

"But Margaret made me promise something.""

"What?""

"She wanted you to find Lily before Vanessa did.""

Then the officers escorted him away.

The next morning, Raymond and Jada drove to the address Gregory had provided.

It was a modest apartment building above a neighborhood bakery.

The smell of fresh bread filled the staircase.

Jada looked nervous.

"What if she doesn't believe us?""

Raymond glanced at the small photograph in his hand.

"Then we'll give her time.""

They climbed to the third floor.

Apartment 3B.

Raymond knocked.

Nothing.

He knocked again.

A woman's voice came from inside.

"Who is it?""

"My name is Raymond Byrne.""

Silence.

Then the sound of a lock turning.

The door opened a few inches.

A woman stood behind it.

She had dark brown hair, green eyes, and a small scar near her left eyebrow.

She looked at Raymond.

Then at Jada.

"Can I help you?""

Raymond swallowed.

"Are you Lily Bennett?""

The woman's face changed.

"Who wants to know?""

Jada stepped forward.

"My name is Jada. I think we may be related.""

Lily looked confused.

"Related how?""

Raymond slowly lifted the photograph.

It showed Margaret holding a newborn baby.

Lily stared.

Her hand moved to her mouth.

"Where did you get that?""

"It belonged to my wife.""

Lily shook her head.

"Your wife?""

Raymond's voice trembled.

"Margaret Byrne.""

The photograph slipped from Lily's fingers.

She stepped backward.

"No.""

Jada's eyes filled.

"Lily...""

"No. That's impossible.""

Raymond looked at her.

"She was my wife. And she was your mother.""

Lily stared at him.

Then she looked at Jada.

"You're saying...""

Jada nodded.

"I'm your younger sister.""

Lily covered her mouth.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then she began crying.

"I've been looking for her my entire life.""

Raymond felt his chest tighten.

"She wanted to find you.""

Lily shook her head.

"Then why didn't she?""

He had no answer.

Lily wiped her cheeks.

"Come inside.""

The apartment was small but tidy.

A stack of books rested on the coffee table. A photograph of an older couple stood beside a vase of flowers.

Lily pointed toward it.

"These are my adoptive parents.""

Raymond nodded respectfully.

"They raised you?""

"Yes. They told me I was adopted when I was twelve. They said my birth mother was young and couldn't take care of me.""

Jada sat beside her.

"Did they know her name?""

Lily nodded.

"They told me her name was Margaret Bennett.""

Raymond looked at her.

"Her maiden name.""

Lily opened a drawer.

She removed a small envelope.

"I've been keeping this since I was eighteen.""

Inside was a faded letter.

The handwriting was Margaret's.

Raymond recognized it immediately.

He read the first line.

My dearest Lily, I hope one day you'll understand that giving you another family was the hardest decision I ever made.

His eyes filled.

Lily looked at him.

"Did she ever try to contact me?""

Raymond nodded.

"She left letters.""

"How many?""

He swallowed.

"Enough to fill a box.""

Lily started crying again.

Jada took her hand.

"We'll find them.""

Lily looked between them.

Then she asked the question that changed everything.

"Why did someone keep sending me money?""

Raymond frowned.

"What money?""

"Every few months, a payment would appear in my account. My adoptive father told me it was part of a family settlement.""

Jada looked at Raymond.

"Vanessa.""

Lily nodded slowly.

"That name sounds familiar.""

She walked toward a cabinet.

Then returned holding a thick envelope.

"I received this yesterday.""

Raymond opened it.

Inside was a letter.

It was from Vanessa Cole.

Lily, I believe it's time we discuss your mother's estate. There are certain conditions attached to your inheritance that you need to understand before you speak to Raymond Byrne.

Jada read it twice.

Then looked at Lily.

"What conditions?""

Lily shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Raymond turned the page.

A second sheet was attached.

It contained a legal declaration.

And at the bottom was a signature.

Lily Marie Bennett.

Raymond looked at her.

"Did you sign this?""

Lily shook her head.

"No.""

Jada leaned closer.

The document claimed that Lily had voluntarily surrendered all rights to Margaret's estate.

Raymond's jaw tightened.

"Someone forged your signature.""

Lily began to tremble.

"Why would anyone do that?""

Raymond looked toward the window.

Because now he understood what Vanessa had been trying to accomplish.

She hadn't simply wanted control of the university properties.

She had wanted to eliminate every person who could challenge her access to Margaret's trust.

And Lily was the final piece.

Raymond folded the document.

"You're coming with us.""

Lily stared.

"Where?""

"To Eleanor's office. We're going to protect your rights.""

But before they could leave, Lily's phone rang.

An unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Hello, Lily. I see you've finally met your family.""

Lily went pale.

Jada grabbed her hand.

"Who is it?""

Lily whispered.

"Vanessa.""

The voice continued.

"There's something Raymond hasn't told you about your mother.""

Raymond reached for the phone.

"What do you want?""

Vanessa laughed softly.

"Ask him where he was the night Margaret died.""

Raymond froze.

Jada stared at her father.

Lily slowly lowered the phone.

And for the first time since meeting her sister, she looked afraid of him.

"Raymond," she whispered.

"Where were you that night?""

Raymond opened his mouth.

But the answer he had carried for twenty-six years suddenly seemed impossible to explain.

Because he had been standing beside Margaret's hospital bed when she took her final breath.

And according to the hospital records Eleanor had never shown him, someone had entered Margaret's room after Raymond left.

May you like

Someone who had signed the visitor log using his name.

*The signature was Raymond Byrne's.*
