Chapter 5: The Night the Truth Walked Onto the Stage

The Bellamy ballroom looked like something from a royal wedding.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling. Tall arrangements of white roses decorated the tables, and hundreds of candles flickered beneath the golden light.

Guests in designer suits and elegant gowns filled the room.

A string quartet played near the stage.

At the center stood a large illuminated sign:

*THE BELLAMY FOUNDATION — YOUNG DESIGNERS SHOWCASE*

Nia entered through the side doors.

Her blue ombré gown moved softly around her legs.

The gold flowers on the bodice shimmered every time she passed beneath a chandelier.

For the first time that evening, she wasn't trying to hide.

She walked with her shoulders straight.

Denise followed closely.

"You're going to be fine," she whispered.

Nia smiled nervously.

"I hope so.""

Across the ballroom, Vanessa stood beside Adrian.

She had changed her expression completely.

Her smile was back.

She was laughing with guests, shaking hands, and pretending nothing had happened.

But her eyes kept moving toward Nia.

"She's actually wearing it," Adrian murmured.

Vanessa took a sip of champagne.

"Obviously.""

"Your father is furious.""

"My father gets over things.""

"Not this.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Then perhaps you should remember whose side you're supposed to be on.""

Adrian looked away.

The host stepped onto the stage.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for joining us for this year's Bellamy Foundation Charity Gala.""

The audience applauded.

"Tonight, we celebrate creativity, courage, and the next generation of fashion talent.""

Nia's fingers tightened around the edge of her skirt.

The host introduced the first contestant.

A young woman in a silver evening gown walked onto the stage.

The audience applauded.

Then came a young man wearing a tailored emerald suit.

Another contestant presented a dramatic red dress.

One by one, the designers received their moment.

Nia stood backstage, waiting.

She could hear the host reading the next name.

"Please welcome our next young designer, Miss Nia Carter.""

The audience applauded politely.

Nia stepped onto the stage.

For one terrifying second, the bright lights made it difficult to see the crowd.

Then she heard a familiar voice.

"That's beautiful!""

It was Denise.

Nia smiled.

She walked to the center of the stage and turned slowly.

The gown opened around her like a wave.

The blue gradient moved from deep sapphire at the waist into soft sky blue near the hem. Gold floral embroidery climbed across the bodice, creating the appearance of a garden blooming across the fabric.

The room became quiet.

A fashion journalist near the front leaned toward her colleague.

"Who made that?""

The colleague checked the program.

"Nia Carter.""

"How old is she?""

"Twelve.""

The journalist looked up again.

"You're joking.""

Nia stopped at the center of the stage.

The host approached.

"Nia, tell us about your creation.""

Nia took a breath.

"This dress is called The Phoenix Gown.""

The host smiled.

"Beautiful name. What inspired it?""

Nia looked toward the audience.

"My mother.""

The ballroom quieted.

"She was a dressmaker. She taught me how to sew when I was little. She always said that something doesn't lose its beauty just because it gets damaged.""

A few guests nodded.

Nia continued.

"Today, someone ruined the original white gown I made for this competition.""

A murmur moved through the audience.

Vanessa stopped smiling.

Nia looked down at the blue fabric.

"I was devastated. I thought everything I had worked for was gone.""

She paused.

"Then I remembered something my mother taught me. She said that sometimes the most beautiful things begin as mistakes.""

The audience listened.

"So I decided not to hide the damage. I decided to make it part of the design.""

Applause began.

It grew louder.

Then a woman near the front stood up.

"That's incredible!""

More guests rose.

Nia smiled, her eyes beginning to water.

The host looked at the gown.

"Your mother sounds like an extraordinary woman.""

"She was.""

Nia glanced toward the audience.

And there, seated near the front, was Evelyn Carter.

Her grandmother had arrived.

She was wearing a simple navy-blue dress and holding a small handbag.

When their eyes met, Evelyn pressed a hand against her heart.

Nia almost cried.

The host returned to the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, let's give Nia Carter another round of applause!""

The ballroom erupted.

But the applause was interrupted by a voice.

"Wait!""

Vanessa stood up.

Every head turned.

She walked toward the stage.

"Before everyone gets carried away, I think we should clarify something.""

The host looked uncomfortable.

"Miss Bellamy, perhaps we should—"

"That design isn't original.""

Nia froze.

Vanessa turned toward the audience.

"The floral arrangement, the bodice structure, and the color pattern were all developed by the Bellamy fashion house.""

Several guests exchanged glances.

Vanessa continued.

"We have records proving that this design belongs to our company.""

Evelyn stood up.

"That's a lie.""

Vanessa looked toward her.

"Mrs. Carter. How lovely to see you.""

Evelyn walked into the aisle.

"Don't you dare use my daughter's work to protect your family's reputation.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Your daughter?""

"Camille.""

The name spread through the ballroom.

Richard, who had been standing near the back, closed his eyes.

Evelyn looked directly at him.

"Tell them, Richard.""

The host glanced between them.

"Could someone explain what's happening?""

Richard began walking toward the stage.

Vanessa quickly stepped in front of him.

"Dad, don't.""

He moved around her.

For the first time that evening, Richard looked genuinely ashamed.

"Twenty years ago," he began, "Camille Carter designed a collection for my company.""

A photographer raised his camera.

Richard continued.

"The collection was called The Phoenix Collection. It was supposed to be the beginning of a new chapter for our fashion house.""

Nia looked at her grandmother.

Evelyn nodded slightly.

"Camille designed every piece," Richard said.

"Every pattern, every sketch, every embroidery detail.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"That's not true.""

Richard turned toward her.

"Enough.""

The room fell silent.

Richard faced the audience again.

"Her work was presented under my company's name. I allowed that to happen.""

A shocked murmur filled the ballroom.

Nia stared at him.

Richard continued.

"I told myself that I had invested money, provided materials, and created the opportunity. I convinced myself that the work belonged to the company.""

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"But Camille had never signed away her ownership," Richard admitted.

A journalist stood.

"Are you saying your company took credit for another designer's collection?""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Dad, stop talking.""

He pulled away.

"She deserved recognition. Instead, I allowed her to walk away with nothing.""

Nia felt her throat tighten.

Her mother had spent years believing that nobody would ever acknowledge the truth.

Now the man responsible was admitting it in front of hundreds of people.

Richard looked at Nia.

"When I saw your gown, I recognized the original design. I realized your mother had kept the work.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"This is insane. You're destroying our family over a dress.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"No, Vanessa. I destroyed our reputation twenty years ago. Tonight, I'm finally telling the truth.""

The host stepped forward.

"Does this mean the Bellamy Foundation is withdrawing its claim over the design?""

Richard nodded.

"Yes. And I will personally ensure that Camille Carter receives the recognition she was denied.""

The audience began applauding again.

This time, the applause was different.

It wasn't just for the dress.

It was for the truth.

Nia stood still.

Her grandmother reached the stage and embraced her.

"Oh, baby.""

Nia buried her face against Evelyn's shoulder.

"I wish Mom could see this.""

Evelyn kissed her forehead.

"She sees you every time you create something beautiful.""

Across the room, Vanessa stood motionless.

Her face was pale.

Adrian leaned toward her.

"We need to leave.""

She shook her head.

"Not yet.""

A woman approached the stage carrying a microphone.

She was one of the competition judges, a celebrated fashion designer named Eleanor Hayes.

She looked at Nia's gown.

Then she looked at Richard.

"Mr. Bellamy, I have one question.""

Richard nodded.

"Of course.""

Eleanor turned toward Nia.

"Did you create this gown yourself?""

Nia nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did anyone help you?""

"No. I designed and stitched it myself.""

Eleanor examined the gold embroidery.

"Even the floral placement?""

"Yes.""

Eleanor smiled.

"Then I believe we have witnessed something extraordinary tonight.""

She turned toward the audience.

"I have judged young designers for fifteen years. I've seen expensive materials, professional tailoring, and beautiful presentations.""

She paused.

"But I have rarely seen a designer transform an act of cruelty into something this meaningful.""

The audience applauded.

Eleanor looked back at Nia.

"I would like to invite you to present this gown at our upcoming international youth fashion exhibition.""

Nia's mouth fell open.

"Really?""

"Really.""

Evelyn began crying.

The host returned to the microphone.

"Well, ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have just witnessed the beginning of a remarkable career.""

The ballroom erupted.

But as Nia accepted Eleanor's invitation, Vanessa quietly slipped away.

She reached the backstage corridor and pulled Adrian aside.

"Get the car.""

Adrian frowned.

"Where are you going?""

"To my father's office.""

"Vanessa, what are you doing?""

She leaned closer.

"Finding the original contract before anyone else does.""

Adrian's face tightened.

"I thought you said you destroyed it.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"I destroyed one copy.""

Adrian went silent.

She pulled out her phone and opened a photograph.

It showed a locked metal cabinet.

Inside was a thick brown folder.

May you like

Vanessa smiled.

"Unfortunately for Nia, the original is still there.""
